I'll try and answer as many questions as I can.

Are you out of college yet?

I was about to start a thread on "What jacket are you wearing" after my post (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=33130.msg1538593#msg1538593) in another thread. Curious to see what people will be wearing the next few months.

High heels..  Long hair..  and makeup

if those feminists really want to give women an advantage...    Abolish those 3 things.. and suddenly most women will have less medical bills.. an extra 3 hours in a day.. happy feet.. and the drive to work hard instead of prostituting herself..

< realize this comes off as misogynistic >

Apologies to all the women (all the 0 on GH) who may read this..

but..  Tp4 truly does not h8 women..  Tp4 solidly believes that those 3 things are significant catalysts that chain women to a patriarchal world.

This thread is intriguing to me.  I'll have to see if I have anything worth posting here.  :))

I don't buy in to "fashion" as a concept, but I like clothes that look nice and I like to look nice as well.

That said, I am unfortunate enough to be taller than nice-looking clothes allow, so I am really limited in my options.  :(

(also, what is OOTD?)

quality has in fact tanked, but only on the base models

they still make nice 1460s in england, they're just ~$80 more expensive

About a year ago, I reduced my non-work clothing to jeans (two pair blue, one grey, and one black) and colored t-shirts. I own some hoodies, too. This has really made me realize how silly clothing is. It's strictly utility for me at this point.

That and I have anxiety about picking things out to wear. Like this, it's super easy and I can't flub colors up at all.

I don't get fashion. Seems expensive and without too much practical benefit.

fashion sucks, nice clothes are great.

I need to fix a button for my KK Attachment jacket, but I have no idea how to do it nicely :( and I'm too lazy to button up all the buttons on my ann demeulemeester jacket to wear it every day. it has like 500 of them
and I need to get a new pair of shoes for winter but I've gotten hooked on minimalist shoes and there are so few nice options with thin flexible soles... vivobarefoot make some nice ones but there have to be more options?

Meh, I wasn't impressed with them when I checked them out. If you want quality boots, look into Red Wings.

Vibrams are an option....wait is that the same as the vivo you mentioned? And I think Adidas makes a similar shoe.

A fashion thread filled with geeks.... Hmmm not sure if this will work well. I guess cool cats with cool keyboards can have good style. Anyways, I saw some people talking about jeans and that is something I am also really into. I'm a huge fan of selvedge and raw denim... Especially on the heavier side of demin. I'm looking to get a pair of Edwin's unwashed rainbow selvedge: http://www.endclothing.com/brands/edwin/edwin-ed-80-slim-rainbow-selvedge-jean.html and maybe something heavier like on the 16 oz. and up. Not sure yet. Alsio, is there anyone here that is into streetwear? Not necessarily Supreme and all that, it can be anything streetwear related.

I know, I love Naked and Famous but I was planning on giving Edwin a try only because I have heard really nice things and I had a pair of N&F jeans that I loved. Like keyboards, I love trying out different jeans from different companies. Right now I have been working on a pair of J Brand raw's that are starting to come in nicely. I love the slim fit that they offer.. I think it's the Tyler? Not sure, but if you get a chance you should check them out. Definitely on the more expensive side... closer to $200 but very nice quality. Haven't noticed signs of crotch blow-out yet. Crossing my fingers.

It was kinda chilly here today. I've been wearing a hoodie under my parka, and I think I need to add in a thermal shirt in favor of a t-shirt now.

It's December and it's 80 degrees today in SoCal.  Going back to the old standard of khakis/chinos and a button up.  Lighting sucks but here's the list:

- J.A.C.H.S. button up
- Superdry pants
- Coach leather hi tops
- Kiel James Patrick Anchor bracelet
- Prada frames

Yay.. new shirts came in.. Christmas sale, only $18.75 each after coupon code..

Looks good..  I have no waist, so it's hard to find cloths that don't look like a dress on me..

T shirts are a no go, because they're stretched out by my wider shoulders as I put them on.. so even if they fit well in the beginning, I can only wear them about 5 times before they don't fit well anymore..

Shoulder circumference is 48" now, I've been working out.. (http://www.clubtuzki.com/emoticons/tuzki_007.gif)

So from this picture you should see the waist problem.. Yes, I know, mirror, clean, I'm on it

These are the XS  "fitted"  1mx shirts series from express, I know, I know, poor people cloths..  that's why I bought 9 different colors of them @ $18.75..

This should last me forever...

My waist is 25.3" under the ridge 26" across it..   the shoulder width size on the XS should accommodate up to 50"

It's a conspiracy that they make cheaper things uglier to create product differentiation..

It's the same in Clothing as it is in Cars..

Typically the difference between expensive mens shirts and cheaper ones is 2 little seams in the back to tighten the waist..

waist tightening can also be achieved during the cut of the material..

That's the wholeeee shtick..

Oh, and in cars..  expensive cars are always slightly lower to the ground and have Bigger wheels..

Take any car, lower it slightly, give it bigger wheels, it'll look like a much more expensive car..

Those arn't lower to the ground because they're suvs but the bigger wheels thing still apply, they look good because of the big wheels.

Hrrm??

I believe you misinterpreted my position..

The UGLY cheap cloths that don't fit ANYONE is the Anomaly..    There's no reason for their existence..

The only reason they're produced is to artificially create a sub-class of products to compare the mid and high to.. THerefore, someone unaware of the game could feel better about them selves spending more money.

The fact that cloths can be made to look better using better material and different cuts (ALL) at a higher price point, is directly the result of the Higher price point.  There's no devious plot here..

I'm talking about the conspiracy behind why the cheap Ugly exists when it costs nothing at all to make them virtually indistinguishable from expensive cloths.

I think sent's issue with Levi's is that they've had ****ty QC for the past few months. I personally don't wear Levi's (My main pair of raws had a blowout, so I've been relegated to my rag & bone pair)

I can never wear leather, according to my parents and family, I have that "hooligan" face..  and so the leather jacket just completes that narrative..

I love Carhartt jackets. And what bothers you about Levis Sent?

Always wanted a Carhartt jacket.  They look pretty solid.  How long have you had yours?

I think I'm getting a Carhartt jacket for Christmas. I saw a package from them on the table when I came home the other day. That shirt is neat, btw.

I think sent's issue with Levi's is that they've had ****ty QC for the past few months. I personally don't wear Levi's (My main pair of raws had a blowout, so I've been relegated to my rag & bone pair)

QC has been spotty like Tact mentioned and they just aren't comfortable to me.  No matter which fit I try on...just not a fan.  There's something about the way they're constructed that just doesn't sit well with me, I guess.

I can never wear leather, according to my parents and family, I have that "hooligan" face..  and so the leather jacket just completes that narrative..

Yeah, I have a baby face so I don't look like a criminal or anything when I rock leather. :))

I've had the one I'm wearing for two years now? My other Carhartt I've had for probably five years now. I love the look and I think it's a good price for what you get. Rocking a 1889 jacket from them.

I really want to start investing in certain articles of clothing more but whenever I start lifting, my sizes go crazy.  Derp.

Calling all denim enthusiasts! I'm in the market for another pair to start off this year and I'm almost dead set on a these:

http://www.blueowl.us/product/momotaro-deep-indigo-brown-weft-15oz-tight-straight-raw-selvedge-denim-model-0702br/

But I am still open to suggestions! Definitely want that Momotaro 0702 fit and the brown weft adds something new to the equation. I was looking at other colored wefts but some of them look really tacky in my opinion. I'm willing to spend up $300 on the new pair, just finalizing my decision now before I buy. I will upload fit pics when they arrive!

Man, I've lusted over pairs of those high end selvedge denim brands for so long, but know realistically I could never afford to actually buy a pair.  Doesn't Momotaro have a pair of $2000 jeans that are completely sewn by hand, or is that another brand I'm thinking of?  I have a pair of 501 Shrink to Fits, but after seeing how they've naturally faded and broken in, I've wanted to get another pair of raws.  I think 501 STF's are like the gateway drug into raw denim.  Maybe I'll give Gustin a try next, they seem to be a decent, and affordable option.

Yeah Momotaro is that brand that made the 2000 dollar pair of jeans. There are even more expensive pairs out there, and my first pair was $200. I have an expensive taste and that always works against me. I haven't heard much about Gustin, but if price in issue there are a lot of really good options like unbranded of course, and depending on where you shop, sales on more expensive brands. If you know your fit well enough, you can try the raw denim scout from rawrdenim.com. I usually shop on cultizm, okayamadenim, blueowl, and tateandyoko. I would definitely check out the scout, it helped me narrow down my options fast.

Momos are nice, but If you're not getting the ones with the stripe on the pocket, you're better off with something like a 3sixteen or PBJ

Hrrm... well.. usually people who eat a bit too much do it because it makes them feel good.. Food = Cheapest antidepressent, stress relief..  maybe if you switched to a "feel-good" routine that doesn't involve food..  That could keep desires off the cookies..

Exercise bike is great because no one has to see you use it.. (if you're selfconscious).. and it's RIGHT THERE...   vs going to the gym, driving, showering, put shoes on, etc..

Can't you move the exercise bike?  is the sister using it?  if you're 185cm and BIG,  couldn't u just easily man-handle your teenage sister?

Lay off the booze. That'll help you drop some pounds. Walk where you're going instead of driving (if it's not super far away). Eat three smaller meals a day instead of one so your metabolism isn't all wonky. Stay away from carbohydrates for the most part. Exercise in some other manner than an exercise bike, which is protected by your sister.

Those things will start you in a positive direction. Add to it as necessary.

Also, y'all still wearing fancy clothes? Good stuff.

I got a little bit of everything, I guess.  I'm comfortable in joggers and "hipster" scarves and in tailored suits.  Having a little bit of something for anything is convenient. :))

How tight is too tight and what's considered too baggy for jeans? Like carrot cut is flat-out ridiculous looking to me, and no one wears jnco's anymore (also ridiculous.) What are GH's opinions on tightness and looseness?

I've always preferred a "slim straight" cut with a slight taper going down the leg.  I have somewhat big thighs, but a small waist, so tight jeans always looked kinda of ridiculous on me.  I've always liked jeans with a little bit of breathing room, but still kind of contouring my body shape.  For reference, my favorite jean cut was always Levi's 514 "Slim Straight" cut, but they've been changing around lots of their style codes recently.

These are a little too baggy for me. I prefer my sperm count stay at a healthy well below average so there's no risk of me impregnating any of the chicks I might never bang

Gustin came out with a Thomas Mason Oxford. But it's pricey :(. So I tried to get a consolation prize: XLARGE x Mario crewneck.

The pink metallic camo with that elite plumber logo is so cute! But I can't find a site with it in stock...and it's going to cost so much to get it shipped over here from what I can tell. Sigh.

I bought 4 t-shirts, maybe I'll post pics later.

I've got a bunch of clothes coming in the mail in the next few weeks. Birthday presents from my mother and such.

This is an old remnant of an IRC chat from summer 2013.   ^-^

But 2 seconds after you put socks on,  you don't even feel the socks..

That's a rather large upfront commitment...  to replace all ur existing socks.

But it's ok, he's still going to be executive chairman and chief creative officer. So nothing is changing with Ralph. PHEW. Crisis averted. Hey, if the fit is on point there's nothing wrong with that and you can look more put together than someone who's wearing clothes that don't fit.

Speaking of...I've been on a huge Outlier kick.  Their stuff is great at pulling double duty.  I love it.

Well, I'm about 5'9.5"/170 (can't remember any of my other measurements lol) and a 34 straight still has a bit of tug around the crotch and around the sides of the upper thighs (and I had to get them hemmed a pretty solid amount). I'm sure they'll stretch out a tiny bit so they'll fit pretty snugly in a good way though.

Saw a pair or two of raw denim's in here, I'm pretty into them as well. Haven't really gotten as far as buying some of the super niche Japanese brands but at the moment I'm fixing a pair of Nudie - Tight Long John's, had another pair before these that lasted about 5 years before the knee blew out so hard I had to cut them into shorts, would recommend!

Pretty sure this is early wear from last year, maybe like 3 months, it's hard to see the highlights in this setting and with the crappy phone I had then.

S5 Camera ain't too bad outdoors though.

Had a job fair/ banquet.

Pants were a little short, but was short on time.  (34 L was way too long, 32L was a little too short.)

Nice looking jeans, Splooge.   Fan of darker jeans like the ones you posted.  I bought some Levi 501 Raw's when I was first getting into dressing better (read more than running shoes, tshirt, and short).  Unfortunately, couple the fact that I bought a pair that was slightly too big to begin with and then lost weight, they now just sit in my closest.  I now have a pair of Levi 508s, but still need to look into getting a pair of raws or at least selvedge.

Yeah man, get into wearing raws, it makes wearing jeans a lot more fun and like a project too, to see how good you can get your fades.

Anyone here have some suggestion for raw jeans that won't break the bank? (Went through a phase where I spent a lot of money on True religions, sevens, rock & republics) etc.

Levis 501 shrink to fits!

50 bucks on their website! I could do that!

How does their sizing work? I am looking for something more towards the SLIM/skinny scale (really dislike WIDE pant leg styles)

Edit: for example, the bottom of the pants look way too wide for my taste!

I can't speak to the fit of the 501s, but the 511s fit pretty close (even though I still usually pin them).

How often are you wash raw denim for first time? Or after that.

Yep, those are the ones. I have yet to wash either of my pairs of raw denim (never throw the Levi's in the washing machine either). One pair I've had for about a month, the other since Christmas. Though I have to wear a uniform everyday, so neither pair gets a ton of use. Really how often you wash them just kinda depends on how much you feel like. You could do it a few times a year, once a year, or every few years if you're hardcore. And even then just a soak in water. In between washes you can just hang them up outside for a bit if they start to smell a bit.

Is there a magic number on how often you are suppose to wash it? Are you also saying you never wash your regular Levi's too?

Awesome! Thanks for the info! It seems the general consensus for raw jeans is to just wash as few times as possible. I really want to get into raw denim and it seems like a pair of 511's water< would do!

Well, for actual starter raw denim, I'd check out Gustin. They have a lot of pairs on the cheaper end of the spectrum.

Well actually I have a pair of Naked and Famous Left Hand Twills (http://nakedandfamousdenim.com/collection/fw-2015/left-hand-twill-selvedge-2/) in a Weird Guy fit and those are basically the same fit as the 511s. For those you'll want to go a size down (so I got a 32 when I normally wear a 34).

Although for the cuffs, you might want to go with the Stacked Guys, as those are made to have slim leg openings

Didn't notice this thread before! Slightly excited to share the stuff I like.

I enjoy:

Left Field NYC Denim
Outlier Pants
Rick Owens jackets
Uniqlo shirts (some tees, some button downs)
H&M or COS basics
CK boxer-briefs (can't forget this one)
CK thin socks
Converse leather JPs in black

It's a bit difficult to describe what I like, but basically I care about good fits, decent materials, durable, willing to spend more on jackets and pants, but love well priced basics. I prefer buying good looking clothes that are simply great looking, timeless, and not so flashy/trendy.

No logos whatsoever, at least nothing gaudy.

I kinda wonder if anyone shares similar preferences, haha.

Can't stand logos either.  Some are okay, but others make me go "wtf?" such as this polo: http://www.eventteesnj.com/images/large/eventteesnj/-Dress-White-Lo-Ralph-Lauren-Big-Logo-Men486_LRG.jpg

Had a few H&M shirt as basics, but have also been using up my local Old Navy and Gap Factory too.
Wish there was a Uniqlo by me to try their stuff on.  Almost snagged some of their selvedge denim when it was on sale, but figured it wouldn't fit well (have large thighs).

Have Converse JPs too.  Although mine are white canvas.  Right now mainly wearing my Clark Desert Boots in beeswax.  Get a lot of compliments on them actually.

Still trying to branch out from just the basics.

Concerning the Levi's 501 STF discussion:

I wear 34x29 ish. So I ordered a pair of 35x30 and I shrunk them according to this guide (http://thighsbiggerthanyourhead.blogspot.com/2010/12/how-to-shrink-to-fit-stf-your-levis.html).

I wash mine about once every 2-3 months. But you can wash them more or less than you want. And you could machine wash them if you like (it says on the tag you can machine wash em) or just soak them. I go for a soak and air dry. You could also just buy them at your exact size (So I'd get a pair of 34x29) and wear them raw. jwaz linked me this when I asked about washing jeans.

Not a valid vimeo URL
I have two pairs of 501STFs. I got one tailored with a slight taper and it's my favorite pair of jeans now.

The Levis seem like the most affordable pair and a good gateway into raw denim!

Got a new T-shirt for Christmas.
I like the shirt.

Been having the hardest time finding a decent pair of pants. I have tried Old Navy; Slim, standard, taper. The Gap; slim, Straight, Standard Taper, and Levi's: 501,511,513,514 all to being disappointed in one way or another. I liked the Levi's 508, but it is becoming more difficult to find in stores as it has been discontinued.  Finally checked out Marshall's and saw a 522.  Heard they were nothing similar to the 508, but figured it wouldn't hurt.

Thing fit like a glove, and was only $25.  And now I'm frustrated as Levi's website had selvedge 522 for $60, and now that I know I like the 522 they remove it.  Just. My. Luck.

Did also buy my first real raw denim/selvedge and should be here Wed.  Pair of UB201 by Unbranded.  Prime shipping + free returns, figured it wouldn't hurt.

Also got this Merona sweatshirt from my brother for Christmas: http://www.target.com/p/men-s-crew-sweatshirt-pomegranate-mystery-merona/-/A-17346731#prodSlot=medium_2_34&term=men+merona  Like it a lot so far

Thanks, unfortunately they were just a tad too tight. Luckily Amazon prime will allow me to ship them back for free.

Tried on a size 33 while in Indy:

Was the only Unbranded jeans they had left. Sales rep said they had a sale earlier and sold every N&F jean they had. Too bad as I wanted to compare it with the Weird Guy.

Also managed to snag Levi's 522 selvedge in hutching for ~$40 shipped. http://www.levi.com/US/en_US/mens-jeans/p/168820010
Normally $120 on their website.  Might be a little too long, but nothing a hem or cuff couldn't fix.  Really like the 522 I'm wearing right now, but have wanted one in selvedge. Great timing.

never been big on drop crotch pants. bieber really started that trend and I always thought it looked a little silly especially since it was at a time wear clothes were trending toward becoming more and more fitted and guys were wearing pants right on their waist. I can appreciate wide leg pants but drop crotch ain't for me

Drop crotch pants were a thing for a very brief moment in time for a small minority of the fashion-conscious, but I think that you've missed the boat by several years if you're interested in getting in on the trend.  :thumb:

What do you usually wear:

- in your free time (in public)?

- at work?

Ill start.

In my free time:

I usually like to wear button-up collared shirts; fairly traditional, discreetly stripped or just no pattern. Im not wearing white if its not with a suit or blazer, usally I go for blue/beige/grey/brown. No red or pink/purple, just dont like it. Sometimes Ill wear a tie, usually not.

Ill pair it with khaki pants or suit pants; beige, black, grey, dark blue, brown, white (rarely). Rarely Ill pair them with a dark blue pair of jeans. I always wear my pants with a leather belt (brown/black).

Shoes are usually a little bit more formal; smooth leather, brown or black and laced (of cause). In my free time I most often go for ones with a glued rubber-sole, but sometimes Goodyear welted leather (suit shoes).

To work:

Pretty much the same. Sometimes a suit, or just a blazer with khaki pants. In that case Ill sometimes add a tie clip/bar and always a pocket square.
I work as a watchmaker (as well as sometimes retail in a jewelry/watch (repair) store, so a suit is considered overdressed by colleges (it just is), so I take the suit jacket off and hang it up when I arrive at work. I wear the full suit only on the way to work and the way back home.

Now its your turn!
What do you like to wear?

A well fitting shirt or pair of pants does not have to be uncomfortable. I dont wear body-fit shirts or skinny jeans myself, because I find them to restrict movement too much. However slightly wider cut ****s (modern/slim fit for example) and wider pants made of softer fabric are very comfortable, while still looking sharp and not baggy.

You just need to be familiar with your measurements and find something that is well tailored to that. Its pretty easy to find something once you know what to look for.

I thought about this a while back..

Assuming a man has perfect Shoulder to Waist ratio.. approximately 1.7:1 or 1.6:1

Now, anything that Fits well to that STANDING person, will NOT be comfortable when seated, because the stomach greatly expands when the torso rests.

Essentially, It's paradoxical..

You can not make baggy look good..

The only reason Some baggy clothing looks good in photographs, is because of the angle of the picture or posing the legs or arms wider to draw in the perceived width of the waist.

It simply can not look good from the front,  as the ratio is dependent on having the tightest possible waist against the backdrop.

THEORETICALLY,   if someone had 1.8:1 shoulder to waist ratio,  Some degree of bagginess can work..

But this is very seldom possible..

One thing that I like to to do with pants is to buy a size (or 2) too large and sew up a couple of triangular darts in inconspicuous places along the back waist band (eg in the spaces between the intermediate rear belt loops and the center rear belt loop). That way, they still hang on my hips but give me extra space to move around. Worn with a decently-wide belt, they are mostly hidden and merely send out "wrinkles" downward that dissipate soon enough.

During the summer, usually a tee shirt with jeans to work and athletic shorts outside of work. Winter is mostly the same, only with a heavy jacket in the snow or a fleece when it's warmer. I don't really have a sense of "style" unless I'm going to be out with friends, in which case I might wear khaki shorts and a nice shirt. Only wear dress clothes when there is a requirement for it (wedding, etc).

Now its your turn!
What do you like to wear?

In general, I've been trying to both minimize and simplify my wardrobes; but lately on non-slave days I wear blank t-shirts, sometimes a graphic tee (For the most part phasing them out.) and some kind of outdoors pants (laundry willing). I just like a lot of pockets and generally the hiking/camping pants are made of breathable material and support thicker thighs and/or stretch. Flannels and hoodies as well during the brief winter in AZ. have a couple pairs of chubbie's shorts too for when the sun high and feel a need to bear thighs. I generally stick with darker colors (blueish slate, grey, blacks, browns) but have been experimenting with colors that go with my skin tone, the latest of which was a light yellow until they were stolen.

At work; usually scrubs. I hate scrubs though. They are comfortable, but I feel like I'm walking around in pajamas in public which is not a feeling I enjoy. In the summer heat it's advantageous for sure. There are some Fridays that I like to wear the business casual stuff. Button up shirt, slacks usually of slimmer fit just to break the funk.

Definitely depends on the activity for shoes for me; I'm not going to wear running shoes on a hike usually and I'm not wearing hiking boots to work kind of thing. On rotation I have a pair of sperry mocassins things, some clarks desert boots, and a couple various sneakers? Tennis shoes? Hiking boots.

A shoulder injury can make button-up shirts look much more desirable.
