[CLOSED] SP-111 - Split Southpaw Keyboard
« on: Sun, 17 November 2019, 13:59:36 »
230319-0

I originally created this keyboard as a personal project earlier this year as a keyboard with a layout that would work best for me in CAD and was only planning on getting one made for myself and a friend but when others heard of the board either via me or my keyset renders for GMK Night Runner they would always ask about when they could get it. So here it is, after a bit of work getting the prototypes made and ironing the bugs out, I introduce my baby the SP-111!

What does the name mean?

It has a ton of meanings to the name that most don't even realize.
 - SP: Split, Southpaw, Special. 3 meanings tied to the 3 ones in the name.
 - 111: The numbers from my username. Original meaning for the numbers in my username is my b-day, November 1st, so I had to incorporate it somehow.
 - 111: Wait, there is more meaning? Yep! The 3 prototypes (once again representing the 3 ones in the name and the 3 people with them) have a layout that has exactly 111 switches (one of the layout options).

Why is this board laid out like it is?

 - Southpaw to allow you to use the numpad and mouse at the same time (helpful for CAD and other data entry)
 - Split to allow placement in a comfortable manner for long sessions of data entry or work in general.
 - Right side layout to maintain the functionality of a full size in a much more compact manner. Hence the 1800 style arrows and vertical nav.

What mounting style is it?

 - Sandwich mount, with the plate visible around the edges and locating tabs for alignment.

What are the specs?

 - Board has a typing angle of 7 degrees (yes it is like a normal board but split, no tenting available unless you plan on drilling and tapping the case...)
 - Left side weights 1.49 Kg (3.29 lb) and the right side weights 1.3 Kg (2.87 lb). This is without pcbs, switches or caps, and there are no weights, just case and plate.
 - Board interconnect is Type-C, I am not a heathen!
 - Board connects via Type-C as well.

Is the buy limited or unlimited?

 - Unlimited of course! I don't like to run buys with a max for the sake of making it exclusive.

Will I be able to buy an extra set of pcbs?

 - Yep! You can buy extra pcbs on the side if you wish.

Will I be able to buy extra plates?

 - Yes you can!

Will the plate files be posted so I can make my own plates?

 - That is the plan, not sure exactly when I will post them (probably around delivery time?). This means you can do mirrored numpad plates and different materials to your liking just know that for the usb ports to align properly 1.5mm plates need to be used unless you make a spacer below the plate.

When will I be able to get my SP-111?

 - It will most likely ship in Q2 to be safe as it entirely depends on the quantity ordered for the lead time.

My favorite feature?

 - The smooth slope on the bottom side, which is really nice to touch when either picking it up or just thinking.

230320-1

Layouts:

 - Before anyone asks, mirrored numpad is not supported on the plates due to the issues it brought to the table for that corner of the board (basically a super flex section that would feel horrible compared to the rest of the board). It IS supported on the PCB though if you want to get your own plates cut.

 - And as a side note, you can mix and match the bottom row options, they don't have to be both the same spacebar size, each side layout is independent of each other and the included plate supports 2.75u and 2.25u options on both halves. 3u will require a different plate just because it made the plate a bit too light on material to include. So if you feel like a 2.25u and 3u you can go for it (if you get a plate made).

230344-15

 - The following are PCB only to not have the plate be too weak and flex more than intended.

230346-16

Noteable Changes:

 - I added mirrored numpad to the pcb so you can use that if you wish to get a custom plate made
 - I added ISO support to the plate, just was on the fence for a while but decided why not?

Colors:

 - Black with sandblasted brass plate.
 - E-white with sandblasted brass plate.
 - Blue with a sandblasted brass plate.

In for one. Will definitely have to get a custom plate made for the numpad though

On a completely unrelated and slightly trivial note given the overall cost of the board: the interconnect cable.  How short is "short"?  What color will the cable be?

Undetermined atm, but likely 1ft or so and probably black? You can replace it with a custom cable like one of zaps if you wanted to (both ends type-c) as it only uses the 4 wires for USB2.0.

Just had a VE.A clone with connectivity issues: maybe I moved the thing around too much, I dunno, but it's got me overthinking. If my SP-111 interconnect gets disconnected, does that bother the connected half? Any benefit to using the sort of disconnect similar to apple's magsafe so I don't inadvertently put tension on the USB-C?

BA111, you're using this board, what do you think?

I am waiting on the second pcb revision to come in to check on this. I changed quite a bit around from the v1 so don't want to comment in case it is different for some reason. They should be here soon.

I signed up for a Geekhack account for this GB (long time lurker though).
Excited (as are others I’m sure) for this!

Some questions if you don’t mind -

- Is the finish different texture-wise in the three colors?
- would one of the three be less prone to scratches, or perhaps reveal less if scratched?
- what color would you pair the upcoming GMK Dracula with haha

Good luck with the run!

Welcome to GH!

1) Black and blue are both anodized so they will have a typical bead blasted and anodized texture. The E-white will feel different because it is a different process, it is an epoxy coating via electrophoresis and is somewhat similar to anodizing, but not at the same time.

2) E-white can be tougher from what I have heard, but I have no evidence to back up either way.

3) Black or E-white, both would look good but have a different look to them. So personal preference.

Is there any chance of posting the plate file a couple weeks before shipping the boards? That will give people time to design and get custom plates made before they get their boards.

Maybe, I haven't thought of an exact time, just a general timeframe of closer to delivery. But I have thought about doing it so people have time to get a plate cut for when the board arrives.

Just cleaned up the off topic discussion that took place here.  It really didn't get too heated, so don't worry about missing any of that spicy drama - it truthfully didn't belong and was distracting from the GB at hand.

On with the buy!

Thanks for cleaning up the thread. It did seem tangential to the point of this group buy.

When is this likely to go live on the key.company?

Your board looks fantastic! Having a hard time finding gmk sets with a r3  page up and down. So far it looks like Olivia++ hihihi keys will do. Could you possibly get a render of the SP111 in white with Olivia?

I added ISO support to the plate, just was on the fence for a while but decided why not?

ISO layout is listed on TheKeyCompany as "PCB Supported Only" though. Did the vendors receive this update?

Sorry for that, Hopefully they do it soon. The other proxies are up but I guess they haven't yet for some reason. :(

Update:

So far we are at 49 on just TKC, no proxies included which is really awesome! Just under a week and happy to see where this board has gone.

As for proxies, Daily Clack and zFrontier are both listed but Candykeys unfortunately hasn't yet.

Daily Clack: https://dailyclack.com/collections/group-buys/products/sp-111-split-keyboard-kit
zFrontier: https://www.zfrontier.com/m/5681
Candykeys: TBA

Hey mate,

I have 2 questions. Will this support Millmax sockets specifically 0305? Also I'm a tad new and was wondering what exactly layout wise you mean PCB supported only?

In regards to millmax 0305 I know they are slightly smaller than the holes in the pcb not sure if they will work as I don't have any on hand to test with so I don't want to say yes.

And PCB supported only means the pcb has the switch locations but the plate does not have a cutout to support it, meaning you need a custom plate for those. It was a way to give more support for those that wanted it without making the plate too light on material.

It should be soon, I can't control when they launch things so it would always be smarter to ask them as that is their end not mine. So if they still don't have it up today, ask them.

I wonder if it's possible or enough space on one side to place neodynium magnets so that the two halves could snap into place

I buy a white board, you buy a black board, we each switch one half to end up with a board like this. https://www.instagram.com/p/B6LaJrRA_nM/ If anyone is interested let me know.

I’m also interested in the millmax sockets. If you didn’t mind i’d be willing to buy (and have shipped to you) some sizes so you could let us know?

(I don’t know if sharing info like addresses via PM is discouraged. I could also PayPal you a few bucks and you could just order some yourself. For science!)

Hi,  I noticed that the EU provider (CandyKeys) doesn't offer the PCB on its own, is there an option for EU people to get that? (maybe i can just order it from TheKeyCompany)?

Huh, didn't notice that sorry :(. Well probably too late to add it but best bet would be to order that separately from TKC.

Got confirmation that 7305 will fit and since 0305 are only 0.001" larger in diameter I believe they will as well.

Final Day!!!

Final day to get in on this board, closes at 9PM EST so make sure to get your orders in before it is too late!

Over 130 ordered so far (I believe proxies aren't included in this total even) and very happy to see the love this board has received from everyone.

I still have one confusion over the plate vs. PCB layout support. The KLE picture that shows "PCB only" has the 2u numpad "0", "Enter" and "+" keys. Does this mean the plate doesn't support 2u numpad keys? The plate looks like it would support them just fine, and many renders have 2u keys (though there are different looking plates in some of the renders without keysets).

Blindassassin111 / Key Company-congrats on this group buy. I've loved this design since the render with GMK night runner came out.

The plates support "normal" numpad 2u's but mirrored numpad (2u's on the left) are only supported on the PCB.
