Couldn't tell you. We have black friday and some other mostly American in name-only 'traditions' the people who run the shopping businesses, I assume, brought to DK, but like I wrote, in name only, because you don't save anything. At best it's maybe 5-ish percent(don't quote me on that because I only check for the things that interest me or I need.), at worst you get outright conned.
It's gotten progressively worse over the years with them also trying to see if you've even checked the price history, so they basically JUST slap 'sale' on it, and try to sell it at basically the same price.

I can't for the life of me take it seriously, so I steer clear of all of that nonsense, if I must shop I do it online, and I find a place with a reasonable price and pay it.

Adding to the list, maybe Polk ES20 @ ~200 ish, even though we damn well know they're really only worth $150, historic low for previous S20 series was ~$150.

Another 10-14TB drive, whatever my son wants for christmas, and a Timing Belt/Waterpump service for my '02 4Runner.  I would love to update my GPU in my rig, but we'll see how the live benchmarks of AMD's offerings fare as I think they will trade punches with the over-priced 4080.

Signed up for another free Amazon Prime "trial" and the microSD cards look cheap - probably because I haven't looked to buy one for years!  How much should a decent (100mbps+) 256 or 512GB one cost?
Title: Re: Your Black Friday List 2022
Post by: tp4tissue on Fri, 18 November 2022, 20:22:11
samsung pro plus should be ~28 for 256, ~55 for 512,  price doesn't fluctuate that much.

Not close on the pro plus, there's an evo select (https://smile.amazon.co.uk/Samsung-microSDXC-SD-Adapter-MB-ME512KA-EU/dp/B09D3LP52K) in an attractive blue (not sure about the taped seams or hood - it's not a tent or a coat!) or a cheaper Sandisk (https://smile.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-microSDXC-Memory-Adapter-Performance/dp/B08GXXKY6P) that would get confused with a 128gb I already own.

Yeah everything costs more here, politicians with enough money to make gambling the country's reputation by threatening changes a good idea and 20% VAT don't help!  Any thoughts on the budget Samsung?  It's not going to have a hard life, will be used in a music player so way more reads than writes.

I might pick up a few Switch games or some supplements IF they are 40% or more off. I don't go for any sale unless it's 40% or more.
And don't try that inflate price prior to sale to make it look like a deal, cause I always check.

Samsung is very reliable even its budget version.

The main problem "of late" has been counterfeits.  On the more expensive cards, you test it with i/o and the fakes would never hit the target,  but on the counterfeit cheap ones it's a little harder to tell.

For an mp3 player though, you should be fine.

This has always been a problem with the expensive cards and USB sticks, you pay for 64GB and decent speed and land up with a really slow 8GB with a fake partition table if you're lucky.  Are you saying they now fake the budget versions too?  I test any new flash storage with h2testw (https://www.heise.de/download/product/h2testw-50539) so not going to get scammed, unless it's by an Amazon raise-the price then "sale".  Guess I should put in some effort to gauge UK prices...

have read forum posts saying i/o test is the only reliable test.  they're getting pretty crafty.

I mean, just buy it,  test it, if it's fast, it's genuine.

I normally stick with getting Samsung media, but I tend to pick up in person at a retailer so there is a lower chance of getting a non-genuine product.

For 25 years the MicroCenter in Marietta was where I bought all my computer gear except for keyboards (and even then, I got my Teensys there). It is the best store I have ever shopped for anything.

Even after I moved away, I still order pretty much everything online from MicroCenter.

Is this a good deal if Tp4 buys 2x of these for stereo use? 63$ each

it's 2x 4" driver, 1 tweet, for wide dispersion... and it's ported reaches 50hz , sub takes care of the rest,  and it's way cheaper than the $240 elac B62s.

HDD DEAL

NEWEGG,   18 tb  WD RED PRO 7200rpm drive for $254,,  285   -11% zip11 code, must use zip checkout,  it's 4 month billing, but you can go into their site and pay it off right away.   no hit to credit, it's a soft pull.

2 drive limit.

Don't think it'll get much cheaper than this,  this is $14.09 per TB,   General BF HDD deal is $200 for 14tb external, is 14.28 $ per TB.

Red PRO has 5 years warranty and internal. no shucking required.

There are a lot of them!  Considering getting my first M.2 though my motherboard can't use it to potential and I don't need the speed, plus SATA definitely wouldn't burn up and can be used to boot other systems without removing my mobo.

Yeah that is a great deal for a great drive! I almost bit on it, but went with the SK Hynix P41 platinum 2TB for $169.99 off Amazon. After some research these are basically the best NVME SSD available right now & they don't go on sale too often. My hope is that games start to use direct storage more in the next year, cause that is my main reason going with such a high performance drive, otherwise the deal you pointed out is a much better one.

I was going back & forth between M.2 & SATA myself. I ended up biting on a M.2 cause like I said before I'm hoping direct storage will finally start to get used by game devs in the next couple years. If your mobo will take M.2 NVME SSDs I seen a bunch of gen 3 ones for better pricing than their SATA counterparts. Although if you don't need the speed I agree with you that SATA drives are more versatile.

Mobo is a Z97, it has an M.2 on the back and that's as far as I looked when installing it with the SATA from my old rig (Linux - plug it in and it doesn't notice anything changed (https://cdn.geekhack.org/Smileys/solosmileys/laugh.gif))  I'll have to do some research, if it can handle the latest and greatest just slowly that would give me a future-proofed drive though I've not seen anyone drop the SATA ports yet.

^  Will I even notice while doing something most people do on a phone?  I think not, so I should be looking for a big SSD so I can play music at home without hearing my spinner spin up rather than a boot drive.

But if I retire my portable wav player and just keep the flac copy of my music library a 500GB drive is more than enough and I could put the savings towards a new player.  If only there was one with buttons that could play for a 12 hour shift plus traveling time but sadly it seems the only player that fits my requirements is the one I have that's dying and is over $3500 to replace; seems Black Friday doesn't exist for the crazy German designer.

z97 era, not all m.2 ports did the same thing. so make sure you double check if you go that route.

The very authoritative sounding manual has this to say:
Quote from: Asus
- 1 x M.2 Socket 3 with M Key, type 2260/2280 devices support (both SATA and PCIe mode)
- Supports Intel ® Smart Response Technology, Intel ® Rapid Start Technology, and Intel ® Smart Connect Technology*
* These functions will work depending on the CPU installed
and
Quote from: Asus
M.2 Support
This motherboard features the M.2 slot, which shares bandwidth with PCI Express x2 slot to speed up data transfer up to 10 Gb/s.
Which is great as it's an itx board so only has a single x16 slot...

As I understand it NVME is just a fancy way of saying "PCIe mode" so any drive should work.

I just ordered a full-size GMMK for $93cdn to take to work. I tried selling the wife on a 2nd GMMK but she hasn't bit yet. She wants a full-size Ducky One 3 Fuji with browns to take to work as her blues are too noisy in the office (pfff), but that's a special order and double the price of another GMMK.

Other than that, I'll pick up some filament and maybe an upgrade from my fav 3d print supplier. I was meaning to build an order anyway to hit their MOQ for free shipping.

Looks like my son now wants a Nintendo Switch for Xmass, I knew this day would come - still plan on upgrading his PC to a R5 3600 (currently on a i7 3770, which is older than him).  So since he wants a Switch I've been lurking on OLED Switch deals - so far best I can find is $250 on reddit marketplace and $314 new(ish).  I need to find out what games he wants -other than Sports like we have on his Wii.

it was also a good choice but two things. I'm not really used to playing on ultrawide, and it's too small for me nowadays. I feel like monitor size creep is a thing (I just made up that name). 5 years ago, it was pretty common to game on a 24" monitor. 27" was pretty big. Now that people have had a taste of using 27" monitors, the most common sizes are 27" and 32". If you downsize when getting a new screen, it feels like a downgrade. Since I've been using 27" for like 10 years now, and use a TV for my main productivity screen, it'd feel small and like a downgrade if I spent all this money just for a 34 ultrawide. So 42" felt like a good size for me. Maybe something in between 32 and 42 would be nice, but for now 42 will do. Plus the C2 is a great deal these days, $850 and the questionable 4 year burn in warranty.

are you going to disable that factory menu dimming thing which peopel say voids the warranty. Tp4 bought a CX a while back, but gave up/returned because the dimming made regular 'puter tasks untenable.   If it was just movies/ games, it worked fine.

Going to try it out first, if it bothers me a lot, yes I'm going to disable it. If I went through warranty claim, I most likely wouldn't be going through LG and it'd be through that extended burn in warranty. I doubt they'll check that I changed anything in the service menu. And I'm quick sure I can just put it back to stock before sending it in, and there likely wouldn't be any trace of me adjusting it in the first place.

As for the work use case, a lot of days of WFH I'm too lazy to even connect my computer to my monitor, and just work off my laptop, so I'm not super concerned about the WFH case. The C2 is an imperfect work monitor anyways. Without auto wake (bar the LGTV companion application) and USB-C charging, it's just not that great of an experience for that use. If I was serious about the whole work thing I'd probably just find a used LG ultrafine 5k, which I loved using the last time I used one.

After looking at the current state of affairs for large monitors, it seems that the solutions are all imperfect. The Asus PG42UQ came quite close with the heatsink and monitor functionality on top of just being a C2 panel, but lack of USB-C and still having auto dimming was still a problem. I believe the C2 is the best choice if you fear auto dimming since the service remote doesn't exist for the monitor versions of this panel (same for 48" oled monitors like the ultragear and FO48U, PG48UQ). The oled drawbacks still seem worth it to me over other choices and the price was right for the C2 so that's what I ended up with.

you can find really good deals on rugs and just decor in general on fb marketplace and craigslist. you need to keep an eye out for name brand stuff and make sure the condition is solid. cb2 stuff is always really nice and i've seen good condition rugs for as little as $50.

Area rug prices

I don't know how hard it is to find a place like this in Jersey, but I got a couple of good rugs at half the price (or less) that big boxes were selling them for. They may have been irregulars, but I never saw any real evidence of it.
