Title: GH Metal Thread
Post by: Waateva on Thu, 31 December 2015, 11:02:23
Partly in response to the GH Hip Hop Thread but also partly in honor of the great Lemmy Kilmister passing away, I wanted to start a metal thread.  Lets keep the pissing contests over what sub-genre(s) are the best to a minimum and just post anything you want related to the almighty metal genre!

Personally, I enjoy metal ranging from the more traditional bands like Black Sabbath, Metallica and Pantera to the less traditional bands like Belphegor, Kataklysm, Strapping Young Lad, and Pig Destroyer.

No love for the metals yourself?  I would think that the girlshark would be interested, especially since this year a research group accidentally discovered that sharks are attracted to vibrations of death metal music played underwater.

I used to be very into metal. My brain just isn't functioning enough to post a good reply yet.

After posting this I realized it had been too long since I had listened to any SYL, which then made me realize that 'City' is almost 20 years old!  Amazing album which seemed to be way ahead of its time.

Metal fan since high school here, listened to a lot of metal sub genres from thrash, death, black, metalcore, power, etc. Discovered Alestorm this year and have been enjoying them.

Looking forward to see Cannibal Corpse and Cryptopsy this March at Orlando, FL!

Alestorm is great, that's true. I like a lot of bands, and if it is metal or not I don't care that much. I like Kyuss, Graveyard, Color Haze, in general stoner rock. And psychedelic rock!

That will a good show!  I looked at going as they are coming to Detroit in February but its smack dab in the middle of tax season :(

I should post something in this thead as my favourite music is broadly classified as metal, but if I can't hear the words (not necessarily understand them if they're foreign) I'm not interested so I generally steer clear of the heaviest stuff.   Here's a varied selection of bands I listen to who've not been mentioned so far

Apocalyptica (old stuff)
Darkest Era
Diablo Swing Orchestra
Ensiferum
Isis
Neurosis
Shadow Gallery
Soil (older is better)
Swallow the Sun

Seeing iron maiden was my first concert. Filled my truck with friends at 16 and drove 8 hours for it. Even got served booze at several places, and we must have looked 12!

I listen to all kinds of metal. Grew up on it really. My dad is an old metal head. Even coming up on 60 it's cool to show him stuff now and even take him to some concerts.

Some favorites off the top of my head that I didn't see listed:

Ministry
Amon Amarth
Naibomb
Sepultura
Fear Factory
Mortician
Six Feet Under
Brujeria
Slayer

Did not know about Electric Wizard! Just looked some images and read the wiki page. Doom?

Their brand of doom combines sludge and stoner metal together, with a sound somewhat similar to Kyuss just slower and heavier.  You might also like Sleep as they are considered by many to be the seminal stoner metal band.  Also, shout-out to Kyuss because I love Queens of the Stone Age too :)

Nice thread :thumb:

  • Protest the Hero
  • Type O Negative
  • Between the Buried and Me
  • In Flames
  • Nightwish
  • Sonic Syndicate
  • As I Lay Dying
  • HIM
  • Sisters of Mercy
  • etc.

I used to listen to quite a few of those bands a lot back in the days of vanilla WoW.  Me and my roommate were amazed at how well In Flames, Nightwish, Children of Bodom and Nevermore seemed to go with seemingly endless hours of raiding.  I will admit to you and jerue that I haven't listened much to Between the Buried and Me for whatever reason, but it appears I should check them out.

I've slipped out of the 'know' a bit over the last few years. Right now I find myself only listening to bands I've know for quite a while... I should fix that.

Some of these cross over into other generes other the straight metal, but w/e:

Cult of Luna - favorite band of all time. Whole back catalog is great. 'The Beyond' changed my whole view on heavy music
Isis - RIP, amazing live band.
Wolves in the Throne Room - one of the best live performances I've seen in the last few years
Baroness - new album is killer
High on Fire - unstoppable chugging
Clutch - drinking and rocking go hand in hand
3 Inches of Blood - not sure of their newer stuff, but about 8-9 years ago they were shredding
Animals as Leaders - best tech shred in the game
Between the Buried and Me - new ablums are good, but a while back they opened for Dillinger Escape plan and played 5 songs off 'Colors' in a row, flawless
The Ocean -  these guys crashed at my place before  :D
Mastodon - Pretty much all great stuff
The Black Dahlia Murder - my fave from the melodic death metal style
Pig Destroyer - sick, their later stuff is a lot easier to listen to and have some awesome grooves

So for whoever has signed up for Protest the Hero's bandcamp thing, how have you been liking the new music? I've absolutely loved all three songs so far, I think Ragged Tooth is still my favorite (but Cold Water is a close second). I also really love that they're doing different art for each release (all of which has been great).

On another note, we're coming up on ten years since the last Tool album. At this point I feel like they're just going to keep trolling us til 2020...

Love me some Djent - tech/math/prog metal in general really. Periphery, Volumes, Monuments, Vildhjarta, Uneven Structure, Animals As Leaders, Dream Theatre, Dying Fetus, Necrophagist.

Still go back and listen to the stuff I listened to as a teen though; Lamb of God, Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet For My Valentine, Sylosis.

Best live band has to be Metallica though.

Mostly listen to BM, but quite a bit of death, doom, and trad too.

My avatar is from Avichi's The Devil's Fractal.

Rather than bore people with the incredibly niche BM stuff I listen to, here's some great traditional doom that came out in 2015:

No offense taken.  Most days it actually takes a lot to ruffle my feathers.  I think my favorite CD I have was probably my Master of Puppets on 24k gold CD.  That or the two cds from Disinter that my dad picked up for me when he was working with the bassist.  Both my dad and the bassist from that group were millwrights by trade.  I kept the cds but never really got to that level of metal/growling stuff.  Not hating on it, just never cared for it.  The only music I really hate on is rap.

Huh, first CD I ever bought was Dookie as well.  Then I let somebody borrow it and they never returned it, which sucked.

I also used to have a bunch of Metallica CDs but when I was in high school, at a Christian high school btw, these was a "revivial" during my Sophomore year where all the kids got rid of their secular music and when I didn't get rid of mine, so my friend took them out of my backpack and broke them all.  I was upset.

I don't have the case or the booklet, which had a typo that wasn't in the regular production CD booklet.  In the song lyrics of Master Of Puppets, there is a missing s in construction.  The booklet and case didn't survive the flood of 2008 that hit Iowa.  The cd survived though.  Not quite sure where it is now as I have moved since the last I saw it, but it is around somewhere.  I did manage to save my VHS version of the Live ****: Binge and Purge box set.  Not sure where my stencil when to though.  That has been missing for years.

To echo what people have already said.  Thread.  +1

My journey into "metal" started as a kids really, my dad introduced me to sabbath, purple, zepplin and it pretty much moved on form there.

As a child i would listen to bands like Maiden, Wasp, Saxon, Def Leppard, Guns n Roses in my early youth 12+.

It really took traction when i was a teenager and saw slipknot on TV (tgi friday for the brits), the energy on display made me curious and i purchased their self titled album. I'd discovered what was being branded as Nu-Metal - now older and wiser? I have a very wide range of muscial taste but my heart will always be with metal.

My go to bands

Slipknot
Mudvayne
Bullet for my Valentine
Metallica
Guns n Roses
IWRESTLEDABEARONCE
Maiden
Disturbed
Godsmack
Killswitch

Theres a lot more that rattle around in my head and on my spotify playlist.

I'll certainly be harvesting this thread for science and hopefully introduce myself to new sounds.

H

Edit -

Having gone through all the posts now one by one.

I cant believe how many bands I knew, not only knew but also listen to frequently.

Its like going nose deaf but with music.....

Arch Enemy, Lamb of God, Meshuggah, SOAD, A7X, Rage against the machine, snot, Anthrax, Bio-hazard, Coal Chamber.. a lot..

In Flames

They used to be my end-all-be-all band. I'd see them every time they were in NJ/NY/PA. I could play all their songs on guitar, I'd sit and play along to an album front to back... But after their latest releases, especially the newest and them going full "KoRn" style, I can't even listen to them anymore. It's depressing. :(

I'm not really a fan of "classic" metal. I'm more of metal soundtracks and metal covers fan. For example:

Although I also really enjoy Rammstein and some nu metal tracks :) .

I am a big fan of Clayman and The Jester Race but I haven't listened to any of their stuff past Come Clarity as my interest was waning as more albums came out, kinda like Children of Bodom.

I have long been a partaker of music of the djent/prog/metalcore variety. Instrumental or otherwise. Too many bands to list.

I'm seeing mentions of BOO on this thread. I must ask, anyone else catching the Sumerian Records 10 Year Tour? I'm too excited for that lineup. Born of Osiris, Veil of Maya, After the Burial, Erra, The Endeavor, and Bad Omens. I'm ready to get several posters signed and added to my wall.

Well many of my favorites have been mentioned (Maiden, The Black Dahlia Murder, Between the Buried and Me, Darkest Hour). But I don't see Allaegeon, Rivers of Nihil, Power Trip, Mindset, or No Warning :D. OH AND I FORGOT ABOUT REVOCATION.

I definitely consider myself a metalhead before anything else and I try to see as many concerts as I can get to. I only hit like 20 last year and I've passed up 4 already this year because of work :(.

Have car will travel for shows. I try not to drive more than 2 hours if I'm trying to get back to work the next day. But if work isn't an issue? I don't mind driving. But I see a lot of local bands and smaller bands. In Cincinnati, we get a decent amount of shows and it helps I know the promoters in town. But Columbus, Indy, and Louisville all provide great options as well. I really enjoy shows in Columbus.

That was me when Invidious dropped. I had that banjo section on repeat :)).

I'm loving it. The tunes are great and I love the subscription system. Their documentary about Volition is amazing too. I think I enjoyed that as much or more than the tunes.

I found the band sleep recently and I'm really enjoying them. Anyone here have any recommendations for stoner/doom metal bands. I know of Electric Wizards already but haven't had much time to check them out.

I used to have a friend in high school who listened to metal (Metallica and Slayer mostly). Hated his taste. I was into electronic music at the time, and firmly believed that guitars are obsolete and will die out within a decade.

Then, one night in 1996 or 1997, I was sitting alone in a dark room, gloomy and under the weather, to say the least. The TV was on, and a song started to play. It gave me the chills. The kind where you immerse yourself into the music like a lucid dream. The song was Hope from Anathema, and I've been a fan ever since.

This changed my taste in music a lot, and I opened up to pretty much all kinds of music: I listen to metal, classical music, electronic, and so on and so forth. But metal has a sweet spot in my heart. We even had some metal playing during the dinner at our wedding.

To name a few favourites: Anathema, My Dying Bride, Theatre of Tragedy, Therion, Thy Catafalque, Gire, Blind Guardian, Rotting Christ, Cradle of Filth - and I could continue for hours.

Thanks dude, I have found myself prefering slower music lately. Not metal but definetly an artist to check out is Steven Wilson, the album The raven that refused to sing (and other stories) is one of my favourite albums. The funny thing is that for a couple of year I went back to it and never understood why people liked this album, it was only recently that I came to enjoy his work. I currently own both The raven that refused to sing and Hand. Cannot. Erase on vinyl and will most likely get his other work in the future. I wish I had a better turntable *sigh*

Also here is an idea to give this thread some traction. What are your favourite metal music videos?

Mine is Tool's Schism

there is just something weird about it that makes me love it. But to be honest all their videos are like this. They are all unique and interesting.

*Edit* I just watched the Parabola video for the first time and wow I don't know why I hadn't watched it.

I also really like the Aenima video; Tool is definitely good at making weird ass videos.

I always liked the MV for Heretics and Killers about the monkeys from the Wizard of Oz trying to find work:

Tool videos are the best. The guitarist Adam Jones does all the artwork for their albums and videos, and I think he directs all the videos as well or at least comes up with the concept.

Hmm, not really sure how I feel about this one. Too classic-sounding for me I guess. Speaking of Kvelertak, I think this is my new favorite by them:

Oh man, I saw Psyopus with The Acacia Strain, Job For A Cowboy, Daath, and I think See You Next Tuesday back in 06/07 in NYC. I remember almost NOT making it into the show cause I didn't bring my ID with me like an idiot. I figured I wouldn't need it for a 16+ show. Two tough black dudes checking IDs; I ask them to let me in and they shut me down. I saw some lady standing off to the side with a headset and ended up sweet talking her into letting me and my friend in. What a show.

Tried really hard to like it. The music is great but the lyrics (at least on Woods 4 and 5) are comically bad, IMO  :(

Mariner - Cult of Luna

https://play.google.com/music/m/Bxjrvroqyrnqd22n2caj6jg4hpm?t=Mariner_-_Cult_of_Luna

One my favorite bands. Interesting release.

Quote
Mariner is a collaborative studio album between the Swedish band Cult of Luna and the American vocalist Julie Christmas, formerly of the bands Made Out of Babies and Battle of Mice. Serving as Cult of Luna's seventh studio album and the first time Christmas has appeared on the entirety of a full-length album since her 2010 solo debut The Bad Wife, Mariner will be released on April 8, 2016 through Indie Recordings. Contrasting the industrial city themes of Cult of Luna's last studio efforts, Vertikal and Vertikal II from 2013, Mariner focuses its concept on space exploration.

I love the artwork from Heavy Metal. I watched HM2000 but it wasn't the same for me tbh

When is the last time you thought about how lame you were in high school?  Remember that one thing that you are sure that everyone still remembers and talks about behind your back?  Wow, those are some painful memories.  You probably shouldn't think about those things.  No one remembers, because no one thinks about you anymore.  They have all moved on.  Why can't you?  Is there something wrong with you?  Look at how easily you slip back into the despair of who you once were.

Enjoy your suffering.  I love you all.

Oh definitely, I caught Nile, Ex-Deo, Psycroptic, Pathology, and some other bands at a small venue in Detroit and it was the best show I've ever been to.  Vibe was good, everyone was cool, the band members mingled with the crowed between and during sets, and they had good beer  :thumb:

Jamen halløjsovs,

They were pretty good live, although the show got sabotaged by some antifa-hippie sound-guy so it took a long time for them to get ready.

They pretty much left early out of annoyance of the revenue and because there was a gang of antifa members on their way to beat up the frontman of the band.

All in all it was a good show, a bit ****ed up, but good.

Hello fellow dane!
How are they live?
I've heard some stuff, and I enjoy it. But it feels like they would be better live.

People are ****ed man.

More new Revocation. So goooooood

And I just picked up Converge's Thousands of Miles Between Us. Because Converge is the ****.

Those Revocation songs are pretty good, although I'll have to check out the new Converge album.  Converge put on one of the best live shows I've ever seen, hands down.

They shouldn't never given me two threads to post music into. I didn't realize Guns Up! played Rainfest. I can't wait for the No Warning set to drop.

Oh I'm feeling this for sure. Never heard of Revocation for some reason (I honestly have been lookin' for stuff just never come across them).

Currently listening to the newest The Burning album myself, heard that they were working on a new album several months back, but then silence. :(

I've been jamming the Periphery and Despised Icon albums.
It's been a long time since I've listened to Revocation. I'll have to give the new stuff a listen.

That Expire album is pretty good.  I've given it a few spins.  Haven't got a chance to listen to all of the new ETID, but from what I've heard, I dug it.

Been on quite the Ghost kick lately.  Their new EP came out last week.  I've been listening to them on and off for a few years but after finally being able to see them live last weekend, I have a new appreciation for them.  So good!

Ah, metal. I like metal. Been listening to Death quite a bit recently for some reason. I like stoner, doom and drone and stuff. And a lot of heavy rock that probably doesn't count. I'm really picky though.

I left my band at the beginning of this year because I got bored of it. We were a sludge, stoner, heavy rock kind of thing. Did ok with it. Got to tour Canada last October. I basically have since filled my time with keyboard stuff (so rock n roll). Now I'm itching to start a new band again.

Here's a vid from my band if you're interested, the song is based on true life prostitution that goes on in my garden:

Ha! Cheers. I always have trouble with knowing what's known... Our Canadian tour was with Black Mastiff which is Clay from Clutch's band. We also played with Circle, Ten Benson, Gallon Drunk, Oozing Wound, The Skull... a couple of years ago we replaced Goblin at a festival in Portugal which is probably the coolest thing we did. Definitely the biggest stage/crowd. That was pretty good fun.

This was our swansong, more metal than the Prostitutes one:
