Important –

sry bb but this board has taken a pretty wild backseat while I pursue other projects like Austin, Nord, and Cygnus. I'll drop a huge update when I come back to it in a few months, tho. I definitely intend to run Hawking48, just not right now :)

/) hi geekhack

I think it's time the ortho crowd gets some attention. What say y'all to a gasket-mounted 40%?

     Features

  •  6061-T6 aluminum case & plate; brass PVD or maybe sandblast weight & plate
  •  Planck-style 48-key layout (at 19.00mm spacing, as per OLKB specs), with support for 2u MIT spacebar
  •  Double gasket mount (dampening & isolation); 1/16" thick Sorbothane
  •  Flex-slotted PCB (MX only) with ESD, USB-C, and STM32 running QMK & VIA (or possibly a brand spanking new custom firmware)
  •  5.5° typing angle

     IC Form: https://forms.gle/Bs3YXFJvg9d5Ykiw8

     Cool Renders

So far, I'm thinking I'll offer the case in Onyx Black, Space Gray, & Nightingale Blue. If you want to see any other colors, say so on the IC form!

As you can see, there'll be either a PVD or sandblasted brass plate. It's not final, though—I'm thinking I'll offer aluminum, as well.

The weight features a symbol reminiscent of a black hole.

It's attached with two M2 screws.

The construction itself is a double-gasket mount using 1.5mm-thick Sorbothane (a shock-absorbent polymer) gaskets. You, the end-user, will be able to adjust the pressure applied to the gaskets at your leisure by adjusting the four assembly screws.

I do want it to. The only issue is the thick bezel, which makes the USB-C port difficult to reach. I'll keep working on it and see what I can do, though.

I really like your design.

When it comes to ortholinear keyboards, I prefer the Preonic/5x12 layout.

What are you thoughts regarding this layout? Any consideration towards a possible "Hawking60"?

Also, what will the switch spacing be? Standard or what the Planck/Preonic use?

Any consideration towards a possible "Hawking60"?

Very possible! It really comes down to whether or not a) this design works practically; & b) Preonic is popular enough to meet MOQ. I would love to run a Preonic-sized Hawking, but it's a niche (gasket) inside a niche (high end) inside a niche (Preonic) inside a niche (ortho) so prospects aren't great :(

I'd love to see some rotary encoder support (preferably in bottom left corner), but either way sign me up!

One thing I like about the Niu Mini is that the port is sunk deep enough that it's protected. With the right sized connector side loads are are transferred to the case rather than the port and prevent damage to the PCB.

The Planck PCB can also use a daughterboard if needed.

What does gasket mount get you in terms of user benefits?

Since there is sorbothane between the plate and the case, much of the vibrations (and sound from vibrations) are dampened

I'm personally all about the 4x12 ortho layout and like what you're proposing here. Adding sorbothane to a mechmini 2's mounting points has had nice enough effects that I'm a believer in these sort of systems on small boards.

On the other hand, I'd assume that the cost of the construction/materials involved here would put this in the $250-300 high end 40% price bracket. There hasn't really been a product that's proven the market for an ortholinear-only option at that position is large enough to make such a group buy viable, and I'm not fully convinced that's the case (though hopefully you can show that it is).

I do think the design could be refined aesthetically - the overall shape is a bit too tall and boxy for a keyboard this size IMO. The top piece's proportions are obviously set by the need to fit over the plate and bottom, but I feel it should be possible to take a more elegant looking approach to the bezelled look, somehow.

Oh, and a sandwiched 4x12 aluminium plate surely doesn't have enough flex for those PCB slots to make any difference at all. You'd  probably need some sort of half plate, which on a 40% means you'd have the top alpha row really inconsistent with the other two.

Looks like it uses 19.00mm spacing, same as the Planck/preonic.

I am fully aware of the niche-inception ;D, but given this is an IC, would you be willing to explore a larger sized design to accommodate 5 rows?

Either way, the design is really strong and awesome!  :thumb:

Dunno. I'm hoping before November. The timetable is wack rn because Sorbo is legit ignoring my emails >:L and I'm attempting to make it Planck PCB compatible without having ever touched a Planck PCB. I'll have an update sometime within the next few days tho, so keep your eyes peeled.

I'd love to see a purple or pink case offered.

+1 for Planck pcb.  +10 if you can ship the Planck pcb with it.

Very interested in a premium ortho 40. Maybe consider adding 2x2u space bar support, but it looks great.

If it will help, I'll donate my Planck Rev6 PCB to the cause.

There's a lot to like about this design.

Sorbothane seems like a cool nice-to-have but I'd settle for "burger mount" just to have an angled 4*12 ortho case.
