Dirty OC
« on: Tue, 23 November 2021, 14:04:24 »
Just upgraded the media pc to 4790k from the ol' g3258

Using a $15 cooler (1700rpm max), $60 motherboard (z97)

No Delid

4.8ghz, 1.32v,  42ring

30 minutes prime stable (avx disabled). 87C prime load,  Idles 33C

956cb multicore Cinebench r15.
192cb single

Rig is ghetto, but Tp4 is like 95% confident this will hold.   Not even gonna sweat it.  Running fixed 48x, no c-state

Thoughts? Y'all ever LAZY one of these ?

I've never disabled power saving stuff and I only have one PC so stability is key, if I were making a media PC then maybe I'd skip stability testing but still wouldn't want it putting out heat for no good reason.

Also found it amusing that "one of these" is faster than my PC :P

The power use difference is minimal at idle.

But the primary reason is that this is a very cheap motherboard, it does not handle v-droop very rapidly, so the offsets aren't as stable if it's allowed to cycle up and down, I'd need to use more peak voltage to handle the droop for the highest clock.  So, I might as well just run 4.8 flat.  Save effort, and lower peak.

One concern I had with overclocking is the fact that the power consumption is a lot higher. I'm wondering what the best setup is for an overclock that also doesn't eat up tons of power, which I feel like ends up costing more than people realize at the end of the day.

Back in the day OC used alot more power.

Nowadays, the 4790k for example is from 88watt (LOAD) to ~110watt.

The majority of the time, it's not consuming anywhere near that. 12-20watt idle.  The overclock does not impact idle.

IN Tp4's case it does because of fixed ratio (though not much), but people who do it properly, it does not.

Woke up @ 3am this morning.

Internal Dialogue:

Trauma:   So.. Tp4 , here we are.

Tp4:
We be

Trauma:  You know the 4790k was the KING of 2014, such a great year

Tp4: It was ok, but 2017 was best year of Tp4's life

Trauma:
It's such a shame that a Champion of that calibre should languish in a non-optimized thermal environment.

Tp4: Go away, what's the point, it's plenty cool, even under impossible stress loads.

Trauma: But you know for a fact that cooler running Cpus are more consistent and produce less micro-stutter.

Tp4: I don't even play games seriously these days.

Trauma:  After you die, the Infinity Ghz will judge you at Computer heaven's door, you need all the help you can get.

Tp4: That's ridiculous, Tp4 is going to Hell where there are only abacuses and be forced to take abacus classes forever.

Trauma:
Go delid the cpu right now or I'll kill myself.

Tp4:   fffffffffffffffffffff..

3:05am,    Tp4 disassembles the computer,  takes the cpu downstairs, Vice + Hammer, Tappy tap tap.    ___ Spray rubber sealer over capacitors, 2 coats.  Liquid metal (conductonaut), wait 5 hours for sealer to cure, Reassembly.

Tp4 Assured everyone that it was unnecessary and that he wouldn't do this,  but his severe mental illness is all consuming.

Pre-delid, Prime (non-avx) 87C load,  Post,  70C load,  -17Celcius Boost

Stock (allegedly intel's improved NGPTIM, Next-Generation Polymer Thermal Interface Material, it's dried+powdery, as expected)

It's.
A.
Media PC.

Did it really even need an I7 or an overclock?
I'd have gone the other way, do what you can to make it as low power and quiet as possible.

As for 4790k, it's a bit long in the tooth (due to core count) but a great budget option for people on even older hardware. Just keep in mind Win11 is going to drive down pre 8th gen Intel/pre 3rd gen AMD between now and Christmas as people upgrade due to Black Friday deals. If you can wait for those blowouts from people upgrading, do so. But don't hold your breath for GPU deals.

Kekekekeke...

The problem was the g3258 wasn't fast enough for some networking stuff. It'd lock up. 2 core 2 thread no HT.

4790k is a drop-in, so the value is there.

Been using it all day,  very smooth,   Really pushes the old GPU to 100% in nearly every game.

It's fast enough to decode h265 hdr 4K video, (not that you'd spend the 60watt to do it, but it CAN)

Is 4790k still a good cpu in 2021,  Tuned correctly, it'll do just about everything.  But of course 5600x is still value king.

Anyone running z87 or z97 i5 cpus, it's definitely worth looking into.

For 2600k /3770k /4770k users, 5600x is the right step.

Overclocked 4790k is almost as fast as a stock 8700k in games that don't scale with more cores..

Anyone else doing holiday delids ?

I don't disagree that it was a worthy upgrade I just question the need or point in overclocking it.

What the heck were you doing that was causing issues, that G-series cpu shouldn't have any problem pushing 80-100MB on gigabit from spinning rust or ssd.

If it had to deal with compression / archival, even lightly, it'd stutter, and roll around and be like, "no this is too much".

As for overclocking,  well overclocking = Time travel,  so it's going from a 2014 cpu to a 2017-ish cpu, for the same $100 on the 4790k.

Clamp is holding the heat-spreader

+wood, you put the wood against the pcb edge and hit it.. It's very light, barely anything and it comes off after 3-4 taps.

Ah, I chickened out and bought a plastic thing with screws for my 5775c which had rubbery stuff that put up more of a fight than a couple of taps would overcome.  Wood is not so scary on the edge of a PCB but it's still not something I'd be doing in the middle of the night.

Have some liquor, work up dat courage.  the 4790k has the same rubber stuff, it just sheers right off,

The delid kit works fine, but Tp4 is p00r.

The trick is to make sure the wood is making full contact, and slightly preload it with your other hand so its flush/tight.

Sadly the 5775c is cracked and burnt - literally.  It worked fine for months delidded then the iGPU died then it stopped booting completely, only then did I do a physical inspection :(

My current 4980HQ was supposedly assembled with liquid metal (it's supposed to be a laptop CPU but some Chinese people got bored and made an adaptor...) and I'm not going to touch it, still hoping to skip to DDR5 for my next upgrade.

It's crazy how because of intel's bad TIM, people spent money on NHD15s and got worse temps than Tp4's $15 cooler.

At the time essentially increased the PC cost by $100, ending with really mediocre performance.

Technically this is still going on with alot of rigs today.

Final calibrated voltage required for 4.8jiga.    1.328v.   Not bad.. started with 1.32, nearly 1 shot this.

Could envision this running 1.304 on an expensive mobo, buhhhh.... $$

Hrrrrrmm.... Upon further tweaking the uncore(cache) it seems to behave differently than the g3258,  Seems like it requires a bit higher cache voltage. 1.228v,  and this stabalizes the vcore @ 1.304, so that's -0.024v off vcore, which is pretty good, ~2 Celcius difference.

So right now:

4.8ghz core speed __1.304v
4.4ghz cache speed __1.228v

Small addendum from my now extensive Haswell experience,  high continuous network usage is a good way to tease out cpu-cache (ring ratio / ring voltage) instability.  Just generate a checksum read over the network and watch it fast crash.

I believe this is probably because the driver generates alot of interrupts.
