[IC] Isotope-NE - Single ISO Enter Key Macropad
« on: Sun, 07 April 2019, 18:23:53 »
Hello everyone,

Upas here again, with yet another project you might be interested in. This is a real product we will make, not some sort of joke, but it is definitely a full meme.
Based on how the IC goes, I'll either cancel the project, or buy a handful of units to sell as an in-stock product.

I'd like to introduce the ISOtope-NE. (As in "NE ISO Avail?")

The Isotope-NE has RGB underglow and white POM bottom, so that the RGB underglow will diffuse nicely and show up through the case.
The body of the case is made out of a single block of aluminum, and features an integrated plate.
It uses USB-C, and the ISO key itself can also have RGB lighting (you'll need to self-solder an SKMini RGB LED, if you want it).

It's powered by an ARM STM32F072 processor, and it runs QMK so you can setup a macro and configure your RGB modes as you see fit.

If there is enough interest, I will stock this on cannonkeys.com. Currently, I plan to offer the Isotope-NE in Black, Navy Blue, and Rose Gold, but this could change based on the IC.

If you're interested, please fill out this form here: https://forms.gle/RxknBp3BuxDtLezB6

Why no ANSI?

This board is specifically for ISO only, nothing else will be supported. Just ISO Enter.

NE ne ISO avail avail?

If there is enough demand, I would consider talking to SP to get "NE ISO AVAIL" DCS ISO enter keys made.

In all seriousness though, this is a meme design, but I will actually stock this and run it if there is enough actual interest in buying something like this.

Most certainly would be in for one. According the recent trends, ISO will die out more and more, so with this, I still can get some ISO love no matter what! ;)

Sometimes it’s nice that we can take items, inwhat can be a frivolous hobby, to see new successes; even if they do start out as a joke/meme/pun.

^^^ ISO is a minority, please add ANSI support. Thanks.
Minority? Really?

Maybe among those who buy custom keyboards and custom keyboard sets... But maybe those people has actually adapted to what has been available: often English only, for which the availability of ISO's additional key between left Shift and 'Z' means less.
When English has not been the only option, other languages have incurred an additional cost.

In the big world, however, outside our little cliques of enthusiasts who buy expensive keycap sets. I think things could be different.

Let's count:
• ANSI: USA and Korea (Hangul) use ANSI. Let's count Canada as ANSI-users, except for Quebec.
That's still only ~ 5.3% of the world population.
• ISO: Europe except the Netherlands, Latin America (Spanish or Portuguese), Quebec, Turkey = 18.65% of the world population.
• Use either ISO or ANSI, whatever is available or they don't care:  Indian languages, Arabic, Dutch, Hebrew, Russian, South African English, Australian English and Canadian English-speaking
• Use either vertical or horizontal Enter key: mostly Chinese, but also the ones listed as "ISO or ANSI".
• Use mainly vertical Enter key but not ISO: Japanese (JIS layout): 1.64%
I have omitted many smaller countries and regions for which it would be a chore to find out what they use.

So, if we count ISO + JIS countries: 20.3%
ANSI countries: 5.3%

Oh. I think it is ANSI who is in minority in the world, thank you very much.

In the scope of this hobby, ANSI is dominant for the majority that aren't at the beginner level. Go look at build logs for custom keyboards or even photos, 90%+ of them are usually in ANSI. Many people dont even use the ISO key that comes in their keysets. Jamon UK ISO didnt even make it to half MOQ when there are 846 base kits sold. Comparing the world to this hobby when most people don't mechkeys exist is a bit daft.

Show me a custom keyset where ISO kit reached MOQ without the vendor buying out. I'll wait.
yikes dude

i know you always seem to pick this battle, but this is a strange place to do it

I'm tentatively in. $60s a bit tough to stomach though.

Your power button is also a momentary switch, just wire in and buy some motherboard pin headers and plug them in. Cant imagine a switch would mind 5v (or is it 3.3, I'm old and forget)

I used to work on computers more and just shorted the two pins with a knife tip when testing stuff

There's another interest check for the ansi 9 for exactly this purpose.

Also, if people got to display their sweet iso keycaps, maybe they'd be more willing to have them in the base sets?
