I'm sure there are women who share a passion for keyboards and other computing peripherals as much as the men here do.

There was a poll not long ago. The results were a bit of a sausagefest, from memory.

I believe most would be lurkers because once she has be exposed, a miliion and one guys will add her as friend instantly.
Just saying.

I've once met nice lady who like mechanical keyboards in Singapore but lurks the forums and only PMs instead of posting anything.

Girls in men's forums will tend to feel inferior as they have small number to get MO and etc done.

Imagine themed MO:

And back on topic, I think it's sad and desperate when someone in a forum states that she's a lady, and 90% of the forum starts hitting on them and/or set them as forum friends, instead of just treating her like any other member of the forum.

I wouldn't make my avatar some rando, and what difference does it make whether I say if I'm a girl or a boy? I'm not going to lie and say I'm a guy just so yall would treat me the same as the others. It's sort of just expected that you should anyways. Not that it matters.

Off the top of my head, I can think of at least 12 women who are or were members at GH.  I can also say that, easily, about 8-10 of them knew more about keyboards and had better input than about 99.9% of the swinging ****s that hang around here.

I don't see the issue. This is why we have different subforums. If you want to talk about keyboards, go to the keyboards subforum. If you're interested in being social, go to the other ones. So far as I can see, your gender doesn't effect your appreciation of keyboards, so lets not make it an issue?

Speaking of which, I only just noticed that this thread was in the keyboard subforum. Mods should probably move it?

this is a keyboard/tech forum.  if someone is here, it's because they're primarily interested in the tech, not the social aspects of the forum.  there are far better social outlets if they're interested in being harassed and oggled at by creepy guys.  for most, Facebook fills that need quite nicely.

on a social forum, that's a totally different situation.

I just don't see the fuss. Oh look, a girl that likes keyboards...........! How could she be as nerdy as I am...?

C'mon fellows, I don't think nobody cares one has somebody hanging or not. Truth said, why would you make such a question in the first place? For me it makes no differece whatsoever to talk to a male or a female. So, the question sounds to me as "is there any asian around here? Any native american?". Its just some stupidity, as what matters is what people has to say...not their gender/religion/race/whatever.

PS: yes, such stupid and irrelevant questions irk me...

Forums are inherently social.  I'm not afraid of "coming out" as female on a forum like this because it helps dispel stereotypes (e.g., that women only care about babies).  I'm female and I hate babies, weddings, and holding doors open for people.

IRC still exists.  And omegle.com.  They have a feature where you can type in a question and watch strangers discuss it.  I just typed one in:

Question to discuss:
Do you like pancakes?
Stranger 1: No.

:whoo:

I remember logging into AOL via DOS using Geoworks, and being able to list all available chat rooms, like 20 of them, and thinking it was amazing.  Prior to this I had only logged into local BBS's that only had capability to chat live with the Sysop.  My dad told me to tell everyone I was a boy - so 11/f me told everyone I was 14/m.  Unfortunately, this didn't protect me as planned, as I started receiving files via Fidonet, some pre-internet email network, with attachments having names like 21horse.jpg.  I will leave the content of 21horse.jpg to your imagination.

It's a keyboard forum - it can't be THAT bad.. right?  But, then again, I'm an engineer and I've learned that working with 90% men is not bad as long as I work very hard and never ask questions.

In gaming, though, I definitely do not immediately disclose my gender, and I play as a male character on an MMO.  With the headsets, it takes harassment to another level.  Even with all men, people hiding behind a computer are generally terrible towards each other..

You tell me.  What I've observed is that any time the question of women on geekhack comes up, ripster immediately posts five or ten pictures of borderline porn, and one or two others make kitchen jokes.

Not really sure why they would be offended, they could make an opposite thread mentioning men and then post racy pictures of modest guys.

Besides, people were disappointed in the thread. A little conflict makes for a good read!

I'm a female.. been steadily lurking here for about a year. I'm pretty much obsessed with mech keyboards.. got my first board last January. I used to weird out my coworkers when I would scamper into the office exclaiming, "Guys, guys, this one has white ALPS and.. OMG it has doubleshot keycaps!". I use my Leo 10keyless with browns at work (doubleshot keycaps from an ML-3000, and black Moogle kit from the group buy), and my Ducky 1087 (MX black) at home for gaming. I actually put the Leo caps on it because they were lighter. Linear switches FTW!

It is really refreshing to have some female insight here.

Please, girls, speak up if you ever have something to say.

Although I am a big strong guy who pounds the keyboard mercilessly when I am in a bad mood, I respect the opinions of people who are willing to describe their experiences interacting with the one object that their fingers are in contact with more than any other.

I prefer buckling springs because they can take the widest spectrum of my emotions (including abuse) in stride, without ever showing any sign of theirs, or even reacting differently to me in any way.

Now I just wish my wife was a forgiving as my keyboard ......

Oh, sorry, I was only speaking of abuse in terms of mechanical objects, which I will take to the workbench and dismantle with relish.

I am quite egalitarian and respectful of female human beings, I have a wife and daughter.

My comment was based on my desire to hear a wide spectrum of opinions. If this was a forum about bear hunting, I would expect it to be all-male.

Keyboards, well, everybody uses them!

Forums are inherently social.  I'm not afraid of "coming out" as female on a forum like this because it helps dispel stereotypes (e.g., that women only care about babies).  I'm female and I hate babies, weddings, and holding doors open for people.

Depends on how you define social, I suppose. I don't come here for the company, I come here to learn and hopefully to help as well. That said, there are a few forum members who I'd enjoy drinking a beer with, and others who I'd rather not see at all and would probably rather not see me.

Oh, and I'm a guy but I love babies. I absolutely melt around newborns. And I really don't care that it makes me look like a wimp in front of other guys.

Cute rat in your user pic!  Is that a pet?  I had a few pet rats when I was younger.  I wish they lived longer, since they are such great little animals.  :frown:  Now I have a ferret.

I think there are varying degrees of social, both online and offline.  For example, offline, I prefer activity-based social interactions, like sports, over something like a book club situation.  Basically, I would rather throw a baseball at a stranger standing 60' away from me than sit close to a stranger and share my thoughts with them.  Plus, in the baseball situation, at least when we're done playing baseball, we can discuss baseball.  This forum is similar, in that despite gender / personality / whatever differences, eventually we are all still discussing keyboards.  So yeah, gender / race / sexuality doesn't matter on a forum like this, but in my experience, as a female, its nice to see a few other females sharing my interests, since I guess I'm kind of an insecure person who likes keyboards, and also throwing things at people.  :caked:

Ferrets are great rodents too, if you can handle the smell. That rat in my avatar is Gush, my pet, but she has been gone for a few years now. One nice thing about rats not living too long is that we get over them quickly, and we know to enjoy them while they are still here. Another Geekhack member just lost a pet, and I understand that it was not easy.

That is nothing, it is only popular media that make a big deal out of it. I was present at both my daughters births, in fact there was no doctor present and the midwife let me do most of the work. It was a bit painful for my wife but completely bearable with no painkillers either time. Seriously, don't let overreacting attention-grabbers and popular media ruin the great experience of pregnancy and childbirth for you. Do your daughters play any sports?  I played softball growing up which I never really thought was too tom boy-ish.  I guess the women's baseball is tomboyish, but way more low key than women's football, or women's hockey, in my opinion.  Or roller derby.  There's not nearly as much spitting and crotch-grabbing in women's baseball as there is in men's baseball.

I have to argue this one, my wife is a complete wimp.  Went into the first birth well prepared and with no drugs and no complaints.  2nd birth the damned ObGyn told her the baby was big @8.7lbs, totally psyched my wife out.  She went in scared ****less but not wanting the drugs... that didn't work at all even though the birth was less complicated than the first and took less time and caused less peripheral damage.

Your mind is in control of your body.  Women have been popping babies out without painkillers for far longer than you can imagine.

I guess it comes down to whether men expect women to share their technical interests or not. I get the impression that this is both highly impractical [1] and typically unnecessary.

[1] I prefer "male orientated" to "male dominated", as the latter suggests "No Women Allowed" while the former takes us back to the old nature vs nurture argument. I mean, there's nothing stopping girls from teaching themselves to program and posting freeware/shareware/FOSS software on the Internet just like boys do (and even men don't necessarily post software under their real name, but I prefer it when they do, as it's part of the process of forming a trustworthy image that tells me that the program isn't designed to own my PC), but it rarely happens.

It's all too depressing ... Spock had it right.

I don't want to come off as preachy here, so I'll leave this:
You might want to look into the concepts of patriarchy, male privilege and the difference between sex and gender, before you claim that nothing is stopping girls and women from doing what men do. It's an extremely nuanced issue especially when compared with mainstream portrayals of gender equality, equal rights, and feminism.

You're on the right track though buddy :thumb:

There is no physical thing/person stopping them. But yes society's portrayal of certain things are indeed very biased on many things. Tho at the same time I feel that there is a great deal associated with personal preferences.

Right, OK, girl haz computar. Girl haz Net connection. Girl want computar to do something it doesn't do. Assuming a modicum of intellect, it should be possible to figure out some steps here, especially with Macs (AppleScript's entry path is far easier than the crawling horror that is WHS). Even my sister was staggered at how it was beyond the comprehension of some people that computers can be made to do the things they're not doing now, e.g. turning on the taskbar clock when it's been switched off by someone.

The problem I have isn't understanding the female mind, it's understanding the ease of this process for younger generations, simply due to the fact that a brand new Dell notebook doesn't come with an inch thick spiral bound manual that covers everything from connecting your new 8-bit machine to a cassette player and television, through to the ISA and the circuit diagrams of all the ports on the machine (serial, parallel, floppy, daisy chain fast expansion, analogue, digital, TV, composite, RGB, etc). That ineffable level of awesome will never be seen on this planet again.

The barrier of entry on a Windows PC for getting to grips with computing is a rather bad, for people of any gender or sexual persuasion. I guess I had it easy, because my floppy controller kit detailed how floppy disc storage worked, back when state of the art systems were still simple enough for noobs to pick up with ease; I no longer have that manual, so I can't say off-hand whether that one included the catalogue sector breakdown as well ... not sure it did.

If you do want an inspiring tech woman, bring up Jeri Ellsworth's Stanford talk. She is exactly what I would wish would occur in the minds of more boys and girls.

Yeah... so... that is all totally valid but none of that has anything to do with why more females, as a population, do not 'get into' computers.

I didn't say it was a reason, I'm saying that it seems odd that it doesn't happen. I only got into computers through exposure to other people who had one (Amigas basically, which rock), and for the most part figured everything out myself, hardware, programming, the lot. The problem is that I can't tie my experiences with younger generations -- where the odds of a girl having a computer is far greater -- because all I wanted was video games, but instead I got a real computer with a manual, and from there learning about hardware, software, operating systems etc was entirely unplanned.

It's hard for me to see what the entry point is now for anyone with a modern computer system. Exposure to technology is pretty much unrelated to gender now -- computers and smartphones are everywhere -- but something must make you want to choose, entirely voluntarily, to want to explore more than Facebook and YouTube, because no-one now is going to hand you the Guide to Everything in one inch of spiral bound goodness.

Keyboards, I can't say -- I didn't know diddly about them until a couple of years ago, only that they all sucked and I had no idea why :)

On the internet I'd say that it's more the rule that there are no girls on teh internet and all that claim to be are actually guys that stops actual girls from saying they are such. i.e. the difference in reported statistics vs. the actual truth.

As to the for choosing how far the rabbit hole goes, for me it was as simple as my dad played pc games (wolfenstien, etc) and built his own computers as soon as it was possible as I was a kid and, well, now I do too. He thought it was important, as now I do as well - to the point where he asks me to verify any hardware choices for upgrading or any new builds before actually going ahead and doing it.

Women are the way they are because for hundreds and thousands of generations, society held back on educating them. Thus, they've always been target of abuse.

Then, this abuse became the role that women played.

Numerous workplace studies show that, discrimination is seldom due to gender, "at least not by men", rather it's due to intellect.

Let's not argue over what constitutes intellect, but there does exist some sort of high and low.

That's the magazine// college theory..

MY theory, is that women are pissed off and angry,, because they have to maintain ridiculous appearances that hinder basic functioning as a human being..

Example: Long hair,,,,  Underarm hair,,,, pubic hair,,,, leg hair

All the hours washing, combing, conditioning, cutting,

Guys might not realize this, but it consumes significant resources for women, both financial and temporal.

Makeup,,  Most women probably won't admit it,, but I think all the husbands here know JUST what it takes to "GET That evening look"

Now, imagine you had to do it,, just kill urself,,,

All this concern over looks is pretty bizarre online.

Why are you so obsessed with women's appearance on a medium where nobody sees anybody?

It would be more important to hear their opinions about keyboards.

So, OK, I am a middle-aged white guy with a wife and kids living in suburbia, so trolling for a new girlfriend is not why I am here at all. Maybe you young guys think that I am a burned-out has-been, and maybe I am, but one thing you do learn is that the best way to attract women is to respect them.

My guess is that most of the good and bad genetic traits of the human race are distributed, not necessarily evenly, but at least dispersed, across all the lines of race, gender, etc. I accept that the genetic imperative of males is the need to mate with females, and the genetic imperative of females is to bear and nurture their offspring, and that, in general, those intrinsic forces cannot be reasoned or conditioned away.

Social pressures are what really mold us beyond that. I believe that the differences between cultures and societies are huge, and that intolerance makes perpetual conflict inevitable.

Beyond that, I don't see any of these guys posting photos of themselves. What happened to "I'll show you mine, if you show me yours."

My guess is that the guys on this forum are not any "better-looking" than the girls.

It's fake and it's a complete waste of time. Fortunately not all girls are successfully indoctrinated in this absurdity. The successfully indoctrinated are probably sheep anyway – same goes for men, nothing more ridiculous than every young man with the same identical hairstyle that's in fashion. I have no interest in clones and sheep. We can build robots to fulfil that role. Hell, the robots would be more engaging.

What a douche move. I wonder why is it whenever a woman is outed on a predominantly male (and usually nerdy) forum, there's a cluster of basement dwellers that think it's appropriate to rate their physical appearance (same argument applies the other way for white knighters as well).

I'm just a bundle of fears and insecurities. I am anticipating reaching the grave without personally verifiying the “cloud of boobs” perspective on keyswitches. Not sure whether the Internet does more harm, or more good.

(Oddly, this is the most comfortable I've been with this Acer 6312-TW keyboard in a while, having reconnected it as my blue FILCO is boxed up for repair.)

As lovely as Ripster's most recent picture was, I can't help but wonder what the rest of her keyboard collection looks like, and if she's a witty, sparkling conversationalist.  Oh well, not ever going to find anything else out anyway.

Unless I messed up the browsing order, the pic before this comment was me. >.>

My mechanical keyboard collection is quite small, in fact it's only one - X-Armor U9BL. Scissor switches I have: Apple Wireless Keyboard(A1255) and Logitech Illuminated Keyboard. I have roughly 10ish rubber dome keyboards, off the top of my head: Logitech G15(1st edition, more macro keys/blue back lighting), Razer Arctosa, Microsoft Media Keyboard 3000, Logitech G11, and others. I REALLY want a CM Storm Quickfire, I love the U9BL but the requirement of left-shift to use the media keys causes hell in some IDEs and linux(usually Ubuntu, rarely arch) and I want a tenkeyless so bad.

Mice on the other hand, I've had so many... the ones I've owned in no particular order(most recent first, then randomly listed): CM Storm Spawn, Razer Naga Hex, Mionix Naos 3200, SteelSeries Xai, Razer Imperator, Razer DeathAdder, (now random order) Razer Lachesis, Razer Copperhead(x3, don't ask), Microsoft WMO, Microsoft IME 3.0, Razer Orochi, Logitech MX518, Logitech G9, Logitech G500, Logitech G400, Logitech MX-1000. I -think- that's all the mice I used for more than a month, not including those I returned faster than that. I've sold about half of these, and in the drawer beside me have the Xai/DeathAdder/G9/Naos in case I want something different but so far I'm thoroughly enjoying the Spawn and see no change in that in the foreseeable future.

One thing I've learned, don't buy Razer - their products will consistently let you down and the rare gems(Razer Carcharias, headphones) won't make up for all the let downs. I love the packaging though :(.

I think I'm witty and according to hotornot I'm definitely hot(shameless bragging <3.)

BTW Ripster, stop using bad pics. If I knew you would repost them so often I would've spent more time selecting better pics to upload, remind me to send you some since you so shamelessly repost them. <3 Lol

Someone should make one labelled in the LCARS font (something like Zurich Light Extra Condensed) – Eurostyle[1] in is a bit too old fashioned for me. (My Acer has something close though.)

[1] Google quickly confirms that the Starfleet Technical Manual used Microgramma, not Eurostyle/Metrostyle, though they all look the same, give or take the quality of the hinting, which in free fonts is typically awful.

I wish. My father bought me a 1981 BBC Micro (2 MHz 6502, 32 kB), in ~1991, being sold off cheap, as that was all he could afford. A local software store had their very last Beeb game (and thus my first), in a sale basket for something like 50p. I didn't get the floppy drive set up for a while. I wasn't disadvantaged socially though, in that my schoolfriends had nothing better – a CPC464 and a C64 (never saw the latter), and the kid with the CPC464 never even had a floppy drive at all.

That said, I consider that I was privileged to own such a remarkable machine in an era when instructional systems were obsolete. I was as educated by its brilliance, simplicity and openness, as I was set back by its obsolescence. A "better" machine would have served me nowhere near as well, and I may have never seen it for more than an entertainment device. (It helped that having no software with it, I had to start by writing my own anyway.)

I think the difference was that I really was quite happy to sit alone in my bedroom with the machine for hours, obsessing over hardware and software details. From what I understand, girls aren't as predisposed towards this process, being one with a machine at the cost of socialising and friendship. But then, I never did figure out what friendship was anyway … machines are my friends.

As a female, I have to disagree with your statement that "girls aren't as predisposed towards this process" - but I think I know what you mean.  I did not have many female friends growing up who shared my interest in computers.  Additionally, most of them weren't given as much access or exposure to computers as I was, which might be why they didn't have much interest.

I have no idea what is going on in some of the tangents to this thread!

But just wanted to note that being female and in the minority is not exclusive to the GH community, unless the forum itself is a female centric theme. It seems to be that way just about everywhere online and generally has been that way since I can remember. I was, at least compared to mainstream, one of the earlier participants in the whole "forum community" thing in general, since I was big into the music sharing since the days of napster and audiogalaxy. (I remember when aol got big and most of the intelligent conversation disappeared.)

Still though, since I could give a **** about most of the female centric themes other than health issues (and I concur about the not doing the baby birthing thing.  I was temporarily pregnant for only a couple weeks and didn't care for the extremely unpleasant sensation one bit - I cannot imagine feeling anything like THAT for nine months - like something literally draining the life out of me-  let alone actual birth.  I don't think mothering is in my future unless I adopt), but most forums that I participate in are mostly male contributors and generally I am assumed to be male wherever I post, at least until something pops up that corrects that notion (like being connected to my facebook page). But when it pops up it can be something as simple as a pronoun, though. I am not often referred to in third-person in online communities (or if I am, I suppose just not where I am likely to "overhear"), but I will usually correct the assumption that I am a "he/him" if I happen to be replying. (Unless there is a specific reason for incognito, I suppose. But I don't think, though, that I have ever had such a reason other than curiousity or to see if someone would end up eating their own foot if I didn't volunteer the information immediately. Even so, I don't ever "pose" as male except when playing guitar hero online with a male avatar.)

But this brings up the idea "what is a 'female centric theme'?" That is generally prescribed by our cultural norms and societal values, which however slowly, do evolve, but for now seem to hold mostly to the stereotypically traditional gender roles. For example Home Depot offers workshops on the weekends which are marketed at women, but I have found them disappointing; rather than being geared towards home improvement or actual DIY handy-work, they tend to be more "craft" and "decor" type froufrou stuff designed to sell Martha Stewart products like sparkly paint and stencils. I would prefer something that teaches me how to use a table saw without injury, or which of the myriad steel files would be the proper ones to use to sharpen my lawn mower blades. I could use some tips on different irrigation systems for my garden as well as which annuals to plant in it, you know? But at least they have noticed that women do shop there. (I guess that's something, but I could really use one of those stupid rewards/loyalty cards for that store instead of CVS or Vons! I actually do more shopping there than at the supermarket!)

But I am still an unusual woman. As was my mother, who decided that we would paint the house ourselves and install our automatic garage door opener ourselves when I was just a pre-teen and it was just her and me. And I went to an all-girls school that made for my own education not being biased towards the boys in math and sciences. (But even there, programming was not a popular subject, although it was still the mid-eighties when I attended.)

There has been some brain research which indicates that men are predominately left-brained, and women predominantly right-brained in terms of the number of neural pathways laid out in each hemisphere. This was discovered in a research project that was intended to determine if the size of the brain had any correlation to intelligence which also found that generally men had larger brains, but that it was actually the number of pathways that mattered. Einstein's brain was actually smaller than the average male's, but had twice the average number of pathways, and also, unlike most, an equal number of pathways on both sides. Now since pathways are established as we develop, it can also be aruged that nurture has as much to do with the gender bias of brain hemisphere as nature, but either way, if women are more often right-brain oriented, it could explain the lack of females in the engineering and programming fields. (But there is a really fascinating talk given here (http://www.ted.com/talks/jill_bolte_taylor_s_powerful_stroke_of_insight.htm  l) concerning the two halves which may key into the nurturing nature of women too...

And as to what you "do not want"... I am skeptical that any male would turn away any woman willing to sleep with him if she wasn't ugly enough to trigger a gag reflex without a bag over her head.  So that's just stupid.  No matter what you want, its always the women making the choice if she actually wants YOU.  But you're only 23 now so there is hope.  By the time you're 30 perhaps you will have outlived your stupidity.  Usually it takes about that long even with the smart ones.

well I do have the original print from the shoot, but even if I post it in high def, there is no way to determine if its shopped or not, so it's kind of a moot point. All's I know is I got a very favorable reaction to my re-donning the money outfit of my dancer days for the x-factor auditions last year, and the producer at The Voice auditions last month had more to say about my legs than anything else. There is going to have to be some element of faith that the pic is a fair representation.

;) There might be some stills from our ameteur porn "couple of the day" win on cam4.com but those might be a little too naked and graphic for posting here. We go by the username modelpair but its been a while since we did the exhibitionist thing, so I don't know if the stills are still there.

True that.  I have worked with female EE's and CE's, but sometimes I encounter one that really doesn't have that engineering mind set.  I hope this isn't offensive, but many female engineers that I have worked with are from cultures where they don't have a whole lot of say in their career path.  Sometimes I get the impression that they just don't have the right mindset for it.  They are usually educated and intelligent, but clearly are not doing something that comes naturally to them.  Sometimes they quit, but other times they don't.  It can be a bit frustrating and sad at the same time.

However, there are plenty of women that do it well and the vast majority are from Asia (not just "Asian").  I think that speaks to our culture in that women who may be well-suited for the task and would enjoy it, shy away from it because it is outside of our cultural "norm".

Edit: I should add that I have worked with men that shouldn't be engineers, either.  ;)

well said.

I think that much of the interest thing might be in large part due to societal cultural norms and what women are encouraged to do, though.  Same is true of men also in terms of traditionally female dominated jobs- there are still not nearly as many men in the nursing or caregiver professions as there are women, and I have only met one (gay) guy who works as a personal assistant.  Again though, this is a kind of chicken/egg question determining whether it was a predisposition hardwired into the gender or whether it is something predominant in the gender because of what we expect as a society that ends up a self-fullfilling prophecy.

And I have to agree with this

I like the grandfathered in Offtopic threads the best.

Sex. Politics. Religion. The spice of life.

I really enjoyed that Religion mega thread... I've joined a facebook wall called "annette's debates" which looks like it might be promising for some interesting discussion, but I think that thread was one of the more thorough discussions being had on the topic and in some nice detail.

And I can't help but point out that the thread seems to have taken itself to a higher level of discussion since my post.  =)
