DodoHand Thumb Trackpoint Request for Comment
« on: Sun, 15 September 2013, 17:35:51 »
Would like to get some feedback from the RSI sufferers here on
Turbinia's idea for Trackpoint or joystick placement on the DodoHand.

Seems like an interesting concept to me, and I found using the trackpoint
on my laptop with the tip of my thumb like this to be no more annoying
than using it normally with my finger.  What do you guys think?

The only compromise that it requires is a spreading of the thumb well by
perhaps 4mm at its tip... of course the tips of the thumb "keycaps" would get
trimmed down to make room, but this doesn't seem like a compromise to me,
just that there will need to be a slightly increased movement of the thumb...

Here's is Turbinia's rendering:

Would love to get your feedback.

Personally, I'd rather have one of these: https://www.sparkfun.com/products/10835

Placed under the tip of the right index finger (or left if others prefer that). Should be able to move it to its limits without actuating the other keys and it has a button built in which can be used as the normal index finger button. I prefer to point with my index finger, I don't like using thumbs for this.

The hall effect sensor should be very accurate and just as tough as a touchpoint, while requiring less force and is available as a component or on a breakout board.

The middle and ring fingers don't do sideways movements easily, which is my biggest complaint about the datahand design, but I guess it's better than a standard QWERTY ;)
Buying more keycaps,
it really hacks my wallet,
but I must have them.
