The real tragedy is that this set abandons the best thing about the original set: it was made of lovely sphericals.

I like what you're trying to accomplish and I know you've been working this for awhile, but I really think the original set is just must more attractive.. something about the wacky color scheme just works, and that charm is lost when translated to the standard color layout of every other custom set.

Yeah, I said the same thing when it was originally proposed, tameone. But it is difficult to do tribute sets with GMK given their design restrictions. Another reason why GMK is the wrong choice, IMO.

Actually, you guys have a point.

https://strawpoll.com/157a6ecw

Depending on what the results of this poll show, I'll change the set back to SA (maxkeys ofc) or GMK.

Uniform grey F-row and arrow keys to match the source.  Also, "Back Space" on HHKB layout seems a little odd, why not just use "Delete"?

Edit: just noticed source has "Back Space" also.

SA maxkeys if you can offer the same compatibility Calm Depths had. All those extra molds are being made now so they should be available for everyone to use I presume

Feel free to take your time with this GB  :D there's too much on atm

And shouldn't the alpha colours be more like the A key in the source image, rather than the colour after they've yellowed?

Edit:  lol just realised you ran calm depths

I think calm depths absorbed some of the cost for new molds, as did Lime, but I suspect we've seen the end of $80 maxkeys sets

I'd have to ask them if I could use the old molds for this set as well.

If this is possible, you can estimate a price point of 90 USD due to the extra keys.

If not, I'm going to cheap out a little and try to go with an 80 dollar price point. :/

Probably going to stick with GMK. The poll appears to be relatively split.

Also, I think I'm going to keep the faded yellow alphas. I find them to be rather attractive.

The non-yellowed alphas on the board make it look like cream cheese and cyan.

Should I keep the all caps EXECUTE and HELP?

(also, gonna run through zfrontier. soon^tm)

I'll have to ask zFrontier to ask.

Maxkey said they didn't want to use a glossy finish on dark caps, and these caps are mostly not dark, so probably?

There's still a decent chance that we may have to stick with matte. :/

Op's previous maxkey group buy added a lot of new moulds for HHKB layout, 75%, etc. 60% should be fine

In the base kit, the colors of the RETURN and BACKSPACE keys need to be swapped. Also, it would be nice to add yellow SHIFT keys.

I'm not suggesting that the yellow Shift keys should be an additional option. They should simply be the color for the Shift keys period.

If you look at the photo of the Fortune keyboard, the Return key is blue and the Backspace key is gray. In your set you have them the other way around.

I saw the kit render in the OP and if the final kit will have all of those keys, I'm fine. But are you shure Maxkey can really produce all those keys?
Anyway, if possible I'd like to add R4 1.25 units and 1.00 units with CODE legend to use instead of windows keys (but this is not essential) and I'd like a lot to have esc and enter "accent" keys in orange or light yellow (but this is my personal taste and I understand that this would take us out from the original theme....)
Thumbs up for glossy.

Yeap, sure. Your request is actually in the kit already! :) Check the last kit render. The GMK render is only left up to give a better idea of the colors.

Got some quotes.

We'd be looking at 144 for the base kit at 100 units, and 100 at 200 units.

I have two options: make MOQ (artificially 200) or roll with a 144 dollar base kit, but MOQ 100. That being said, the base kit is pretty dang comprehensive.

Which one would you guys like?

I think you should remove the 40s support, and some 'redundant' keys like multiple homing keys, multiple 1u r4 keys (go with standard, or code/hack), etc.  you could remove like 15 keys and sell a lot more sets at a reasonable price.

Don't worry about those! The kit is going to be loosely based off of calm depths, and I'm working with zFrontier to use the molds made there in this set as well. So, you'll get those.

So the profile is like 1 2 3 4 3, right?

That means left/right/down are all row 3, and then you have up on R4. A lot of SA sets offer an addition up arrow in the same profile as the others. I think this is more common with SA than SMK because the difference between those row profiles in SA is more drastic.

If you look at the base mod set for Oblivion SA, there is the additional R3 up arrow

This looks really awesome!
So disappointed that you are so close to supporting HHKB layout, but please if you are going to go to the effort of providing the alternative backspace and control, then please provide 1.5u meta keys like an original HHKB.
Also I have a question; why change win to code yet leave “menu”? You know other OS’s don’t use menu?

HHKB layout is fully covered, though. I understand that it may not have entirely correct legends, but the current 1.5u keys I have (Ctrl and Alt) service a far greater amount of people than having meta there.

As to why I'm using menu: it's expensive to change molds.

I hope I cleared up the reasons behind some of the decisions I made.

Thanks for answering my questions, and sorry if I came across overly negative! Just disappointing when you find a set which has the perfect colours, to then find that it doesn't fit either keyboard correctly that you would place it upon! (proper HHKB layout and TADA68).
Most sets give only 1.5u Ctrl and Alt like you say, which is a shame, as it only caters for windows users. Thankfully more and more designers are providing 1.5u Meta (Like the extremely popular GMK9009, looking forward to that arriving).
If this GB did run, I admit I would still be tempted, just for the alphas; lovely colour.

What is it you think this set is missing for the Tada68?  I'm pretty sure he's got the default layout of the Tada68 covered.  It has the R3 PgUp, R4 PgDn, 1U Ctrl, Alt, and Fn, as well as a 1.75U shift.

I think euphxenos summed it up. It covers the TADA default layout perfectly, there should be no reason why you shouldn't be able to fit the set on the KB.

Also, I'm going to be putting this on a HHKB myself, as I have one coming in. :D

I am interested in this.

If price is low and compatibility is high, I'll for sure buy it. From the layout in OP, it looks to be fully compatible with the boards I have.

Also please use Maxkey since my wallet and time can't handle SP right now.
Also, are the Back Space and SHIF T going to be an issue with this one?

Maybe make render with a bigger board that shows the gray keys and then strawpole to see if people are willing to pay the extra for them? I think they are neat but not sure how much more I'd want to spend on them.

It looks good as it is.  If you want it to look more like the inspiration, a uniform grey function row and some more grey mods would accomplish that, and that would also look good.  Would either one look better than the other?  *shrug*  Flip a coin.  I'm glad you're doing this through Zfrontier, because they're recent experience with Maxkeys over SA Nuclear is going to make them really careful about the color matching (and getting samples), which is going to be particularly important for this set turning out right.  That's going to have more of an impact than how much grey is in it.

No love for the uniform gray f-row?

I like what you're trying to accomplish and I know you've been working this for awhile, but I really think the original set is just must more attractive.. something about the wacky color scheme just works, and that charm is lost when translated to the standard color layout of every other custom set.

Instead of reiterating what has been said before I'll just quote these like-minded folks.

Slightly off-topic, but do you think they'll make some 'permanent' molds for the keys used between this and Calm Depths sets? Or just keep creating ones that are only good for 500 sets

With the recent Nuclear trouble from Maxkey I would honestly prefer this to start after Calm Depths has shipped

Actually, you're reiterating what they said haha. But point made! I'll ask zFrontier to check the prices for grey mods and uniform F-row kits.

The kits are probably going to be unified, though, not separate. So the blue uniform F row keys will be in there.

Great question! Unfortunately, not sure. Never asked. :/

If you can remind me again when I post the new mold proofing pictures, I'll definitely ask them to add it to their "base kit". :D

Not correct. MaxKeys’ profile is R1-R2-R3-R4-R3 so that R4 fn will not fit on TADA68.

I was going to say that it was probably just an error in the render (which doesn't have the rows numbered), since this is based on ye_cole's Maxkeys SA Calm Depths kit, but I just double-checked the final render for Maxkeys SA Calm Depths, and it too has the 1U Fn key in R3, not R4.

Oops.

Yes, you are absolutely correct.  This set in its current form does not cover the default layout for Tada68.  It's missing the R4 1U Fn key.  Even worse, it appears that same mistake was made in the Maxkeys SA Calm Depths group buy.

I misspoke: it's the R3 1U Fn (for the bottom row) that's missing to properly cover the Tada68 layout.  It has R4 but not the R3 1U Fn.

Anyway, if this is done with PBT material, I cannot expect to see a glossy texture....too sad.

Unfortunately, no, as there usually isn't demand for int'l kits- they end up sitting. Sorry about that.

I'm sure the kit is already finalized, but all grey function and arrow keys would be awesome. Still keeping my eye out on this one though! Really looking forward to it.

I think there's a mistake in the new kit, probably because ePBT's row numbering (443211) is reversed from GMK's (112344).  Where the old GMK kit had an R3 PgUp and R4 PgDn to support 65% layouts like the Tada68, the new ePBT kit would need an R2 PgUp and R1 PgDn to achieve the same goal, but the new ePBT kit has an R3 PgUp and R4 PgDn, which doesn't make any sense.  It looks like they were just moved over to the new kit without factoring in the reversed row numbering.  You probably want to drop the R3 PgUp/R4 PgDn and replace them with R2 PgUp/R1 PgDn.

Thank you for pointing this out!

This was an oversight on my behalf and I've fixed it. :)

It's pretty much finalized, sorry about that! I'm glad you're looking forward to it though. :)

The real tragedy is that this set abandons the best thing about the original set: it was made of lovely sphericals.

Agreed, this set should def be SA/MT3

No love for the uniform gray f-row?

Agreed, should keep the gray f row, its part of the charm of the original set

I like what you're trying to accomplish and I know you've been working this for awhile, but I really think the original set is just must more attractive.. something about the wacky color scheme just works, and that charm is lost when translated to the standard color layout of every other custom set.

Agreed, color scheme should duplicate the original board rather than normalizing it to be like every other set, the way eric clapton makes every blues song sound the same

Yep, no SA or grey F row, no buy from me.  Loses the appeal of the original.

Damn bro your photos are truly ass. You should maybe mount them on a board, throw away your potato camera and take some pics that are anywhere remotely acceptable.

Thanks

Well, they aren't his photos.  so....

These colors might just be right.  That second one you shared seems more promising.  Excited to see this one come to life.  Very unique set.

Actually, no, it isn't. I'll speak to KBDFans and see if we can do that.

No ETA at the moment. If I see the samples and like them, then we're ready to proceed.

At first I was not excited about going full "yellowed abs" but that yellow (even with the potato quality) looks pretty good; still much too yellow IMO, but I can deal with it. I'm all for more epbt sets too. As long as the blue-green is more...muted(?) like the original I'm in. Would look spicy on a blue-gray board.

You can choose- both are going to be in the base kit.

It's 5 and still haven't gotten the samples yet, so I assume they're coming on Monday, but I'll make sure that the colors actually turn out nicely- don't worry! Also, I think you may be right about the "saturation" of the teal. Won't know for sure until monday/tuesday, though.

In the last picture, all three colours look a bit saturated. Maybe it’s the picture but I would prefer a bit lighter and more muted for all three colours.

I've recieved the samples. They do look a bit too saturated. I'm going to go to a pantone dealer and look at the colors in person to fine tune them a bit better, and I'll ask KBDFans to send new samples.

Thanks, man.  Yeah those look like they’ve been around cigarette smoke for a few decades.  Not the subtle yellow from normal aging.

Glad you’re going to revise the color.  Still love the idea of this one

I have some old GMK renders: (to show what epbt would perhaps look like)

Show Image

Show Image

I really like the GMK render. The colors: the off-white, the vibrant mods, the blue-gray enter.

The alphas - can you go with the standard ePBT beige? For example, the colors of the mods in this: https://www.1upkeyboards.com/shop/keycaps/enjoypbt-keycap-set-english-red/

The only reason I bring this up is because I look at the other renders, the samples, and then I look at the pic in the signature... and I keep thinking "damn, the signature looks sexy".

I like the special color. In my opinion the standard beige is a bit boring for this set.

Super glad there are more sets from enjoypbt. Really like the less intense shade of yellowing on the alpha's in the 2nd GMK render, but I do like the color of the mods you settled on.
