GMK Olivia | Launching 3/28!

Mailing list here: http://eepurl.com/dnfo0X

Hi everyone!! I'd like to officially announce the interest check for a set I've been working on for a little while. Originally born from my love of all things rose gold, it is the perfect companion for any board you throw at it. I hope you like it as much as I do!

Kits

Currently offered are a base kit & extras kit. The extras kit offers alternate colors, and compatibility with all your favorite 40% boards.

Artisans

I'm super excited to be working with RAMA Works to offer a special edition of aluminum XO artisan keys alongside with GMK Olivia.

Vendors

The main vendor for the group buy will be NovelKeys with CandyKeys, Monokei & Zfrontier as the proxy vendors for EU, SEA, and Asia respectively.

Pricing

Currently the quoted prices are $140 for the base kit and $45 for the extras at NovelKeys.  Pricing for the proxy vendors is incoming.

Special Thanks

This interest check couldn't have been made a reality without the support of a lot of people in the keyboard community. Special thanks to Rama, Kate, Oblotzky, Mike, Discord friends and many others <2

I've been waiting to hear more about this and it looks fantastic.
A question about the alphas color:  In the Rama renders it looks considerably more beige than the whiter shade on the other renders.  Which will it be?
I personally think if the alphas were a softer white/beige and the mods a gentle dark grey (ie a bit less contrast between the two) it might complement the softness of the rose color well.

not to be critical - it looks amazing, just my two cents

Lovely hue of pink. In my opinion, I think a change in the base color of the alphas from CP to closer to the gold color, or the alpha legend color from the grey tone to something closer to gold, would be interesting.

I personally think if the alphas were a softer white/beige and the mods a gentle dark grey (ie a bit less contrast between the two) it might complement the softness of the rose color well.

What this user said resonates with me.

Thanks for the feedback!!! :) I'm using CP as the alphas bg so it will be somewhat in between the rama & oblotzky renders looking at this:

Looking at CP in front of me, I think it's too white for the overall feel. Maybe choose the more cream one (L9?) like in the render with Rama's X?

I agree with this. I think the mods could be a shade or two lighter so that it brings out the color of the rose color. But you do you!

Very pleasant set to look at - I've said this before when this was brought up, I personally would've wanted this to be a Terminal/Skidata type set where the alphas and mods are the same colour with just the rose gold accents. I'm sure you're set on your vision and that's completely fine, I'll still be purchasing a set more than likely, just figured I'd bring it up regardless for what it's worth!

Additionally, regarding the kits, I feel like having (as I understand it) UK-ISO in the extras kit might be a little awkward for some people - I don't personally have an issue with it because I only have 2 ISO boards out of like 8. That said, again, I'd assume you have already done the math on it and come to the conclusion that overall this is the better way to go about it economically speaking.

Great job, best of luck!

Looks great Olivia!! I love the colours. My only reservation is the basic ISO keys not being in the base set - worries me that I’d join and end up with a set that is unusable if the addon pack doesn’t make MOQ

Please include the 6u center-stemmed spacebar in both the base kit and add-ons for compatibility with the incredibly popular Realforce 87U and HHKB (and the less popular Infinity 60%). This is a must have in modern GMK sets.

$45 extra for ISO?

You can do ISO with just R3 1u, R4 1u, ISO enter, Shift. But instead we have 4 keys for the same spot and the <2 key which doesn't really have any functionality. My suggestion would be to move 4 ISO keys to basekit, and move any combination of the keys below:

In ISO, the extra 2,3 and left to "1" and 2 different R3 is not needed.

Looking at CP in front of me, I think it's too white for the overall feel. Maybe choose the more cream one (L9?) like in the render with Rama's X?

I've been looking at pictures of Stormtrooper (CP) online, and it seems to look more creamy depending on different lights.

Once I get the color samples from GMK I'll be able to compare a little better, currently I only have Pristine (L9) which I find a little too yellow. If you have a CP set, do you mind letting me know which picture is more representative?

Please include the 6u center-stemmed spacebar in both the base kit and add-ons for compatibility with the incredibly popular Realforce 87U and HHKB (and the less popular Infinity 60%). This is a must have in modern GMK sets.

I see what I can do :) I have both of those boards, it would be nice to support them too.

I love that this has ortho compatibility. Is there any chance of having the blank rose gold keys in the extras kit be convex?

I had no clue that GMK offered 1u convex keys  I'll see how much it bumps the price :D

Thank you so much for your suggestion, I'm a bit unfamiliar with ISO layouts so your feedback helps a lot! My aim is to concentrate interest in the ISO + 40% + alt colors for the extras because of the high MOQ. Unfortunately it does mean that the kit will cost more than just a solo ISO kit :(

No. It's $140 for a kit that supports the most popular layouts and pleases the most people (inc. some novelty 1U keys for the WKL/HHKB users), and $45 to accommodate less common layouts.

The designer has carefully thought about this division in kits, and bundled ISO, ortholinear and "boring spacebars and arrow keys" into it's own kit, and perhaps leaned slightly towards giving HHKB, 60% and 65% users what they crave without needing to get the extras kit. That makes more sense than putting the bare minimum ISO keys into the base kit at the expense of HHKB/60%/novelty keys.

IMHO it's a refreshing change from having to subsidize ISO users in every GMK base kit I buy :p

No. It's $140 for a kit that supports the most popular layouts and pleases the most people (inc. some novelty 1U keys for the WKL/HHKB users), and $45 to accommodate less common layouts.

That makes more sense than putting the bare minimum ISO keys into the base kit at the expense of HHKB/60%/novelty keys.

IMHO it's a refreshing change from having to subsidize ISO users in every GMK base kit I buy :p

I kinda have to disagree for a few reasons, and that's not because I dont understand what you are saying. I get that you feel you have to subsidies others (whether you put an emoji in there or not), and that keys that get 'little' usage in your opinion shouldn't be included.

Firstly, this secondary kit, at 250 MOQ, is never going to reach its target unless somewhere like Assdrop steps in. 250 is a crazy number of sets for it to achieve. The base kit will have a good chance sure - its a great colourway, and I love it. But I can't buy if it doesn't have even basic ISO support.

Secondly, this hobby is about freedom to choose what layouts you want, across boards and switches - in essence to customise what you have. Here in the UK any PC you buy with a ****ty keyboard, or laptop all has ISO - I've tried ANSI, and I dislike not having quick access to certain keys, or having to retrain my brain when I switch devices.

ISO is part of the ingrained European standard and its difficult for a lot of people to move away from that. Its been used here historically. ANSI users dont subsidise ISO in this - everyone pays for keys that they dont use in any set - thats the beauty of the hobby - we can pick and choose what we want to use. I'm not certain that the Geekhack community is always representative of the whole community - so I expect little traction if anything here - and likely the usual ISO/non-standard bullying.

Finally - if you look at modern usage other staples of the keyset standard base set aren't being made. How many people really use a numpad? what about stepped caps? Multiple coloured enters for one layout are ok, but supporting another layout isn't?  The majority of the boards on here are 60% or thereabouts and probably dont need that (I might be shooting myself in the foot here as a TX1800 user and a 65% user with my Noxary 268 amongst 25 or so other top end boards).

My suggestion would be to either include the bare minimum in the base set (like Muted, 9009, oblivion, red samurai, solarised dark etc.etc.).

If that's not palatable I almost question why you would run an extras kit that is almost certain to not make MOQ without Massdrop support, and do as the Chinese GBs do (like Iris, Rainbow, and KA2017/18) and support a single layout only.

Would it be possible to add staggered 40s support? A few of my 40s user friends are asking about it. It would also help the extras kit hit MOQ if you were planning on running such a kit.

Prefer CP as well, for what it's worth. I think RAMA's renders look lovely, but in real life I don't think it will look quite like that and I'd prefer the brighter shade than something that ends up looking yellowish IRL. Kind of tired of the whole yellowed alphas look across the board. (PUN INTENDED!!!!!!!!)

I feel like chiming in on the ISO "issue".

Basic ISO support is included in the base kit of almost every GMK set ever because it's just about the easiest major layout to support physically. 4 keys and you support a significantly different layout. By not including this small expense in the base kit, you're alienating an entire continent of primarily ISO users, as well as many other countries that use ISO such as China, Korea, Japan, etc. In my opinion this is going to severely hurt the viability of the set. Massdrop can carry sets because of their huge preexisting customer base. Small vendors have to rely on the sheer popularity of the set in both their own countries and through the proxies across other countries. If you don't include basic ISO support in the base kit, you might as well not even have and EU proxy and support from other countries will be impaired, something I don't think you can really stand to have happen with a set that needs 250 moq.

Personally, I would take the time to seriously consider the benefits of having ISO support in the base kit vs the potential costs of it not being in there, for the sake of the existence of the set.

Hi! I'm chiming in for 40% support, especially the minivan. I also wanted to point out that a recent GMK group buy ran at $155 per base kit and was able to cover a wide range of users: ANSI, ISO, and 40% as well.
Here is a photo of all the keys that were available in the kit.

Not that you were talking about it specifically, but since 3C is shown on that photograph I thought I'd mention the following.  3C is quite a bit darker and more orange than the pink in the renders in the OP.  It's more of dirty peachy-apricot darker shade in person.  Not like the softer muted color on the renders.  On some photographs and on renders of kits such as GMK Muted it usually looks less dark and dirty orange-tinted than it really is.  I have keycaps made in 3C on my old WEY HK2000, though at the time I didn't realize it was basically 3C. I got GMK Muted color addons, and was disappointed once I actually received the caps.

Hi! I'm chiming in for 40% support, especially the minivan. I also wanted to point out that a recent GMK group buy ran at $155 per base kit and was able to cover a wide range of users: ANSI, ISO, and 40% as well.
Here is a photo of all the keys that were available in the kit.

Ooh this is very close to what I included in my base, just adding ISO & 40%

I dig it. Especially since I came up with a similar set on my own ;)

Regarding alpha colors: I'm cool with either. L9 is a little more beige, which would def complement the pink I think - if a beige/warm tone set is a goal, consider going towards BV from N9 as well.

It is! That is why I wanted to mention it because $155 was a very fair price and having such universal compatibility allowed the MOQ to be reached.

Since the point of the kit is to have rose gold theme, it makes sense that the more plain non-rose gold option is an addon.

GMK Oblivion Hagoromo alphas uses CP

it's basically the RGB equivialent of 235/235/235 or so, a slight off-white.

What board is that in the top image?

It looks (to me) like CP falls more in line with the RAMA renders - which is great, as those are what initially got me excited about the set!

3K or L9 also seem like great options, but either way I'm 100% in.

Hi Olivia.

This set looks absolutely amazing!
My girlfriend instantly fell in love with this set when she saw it and sent me a text with a picture saying that she had to have it! She loves everything rose gold too. So much that we are getting her first mech board cerakoted in a custom rose gold color.

The problem we are having is that she's not as big of a nerd as i am so she doesn't touchtype and has to look at the keys to find some characters.
And we live in Sweden so iwanted to hear if there is any possibility of a nordic (SE NO DK) kit or for that to be included in the iso kit?

Does anyone know any stats on nordic kits reaching moq?

if it's not massdrop i am skeptical about a NORDE kit making MOQ, since the only ones that have ever done it organically are GMK nautilus (nope got 82 lol) and GMK laser

That's a shame. One possibility would be mixing olivia mods with alphas from some other set whith white alphas and dark tex. Or even getting custom dyesubbed alphas. I think i saw someone posting a custom dyesubbed set he had made for his wife.

Nautilus reached 105 NORDE kits. And it was the first time that an international kit, and colemak & dvorak have reached the MOQ without the aid of Massdrop.

You could get 9009 with the international kit. Both still available at mykeyboard.eu. Or just some OG Cherry set. The alphas would be more beige than the Olivia alphas, but some people in this thread seem to like that even more.

Shiny ABS is my goal with keycaps.  They feel amazing that way.  OG Cherry shiny ABS doubleshots are the best (for me).  After two years of daily use, I've finally gotten my GMK Cyan shiny and worn in enough where it almost compares to my vintage Cherry doubleshots.   Almost but not quite.

 I so agree!!

So, I've come up with a final draft layout that shouldn't change the price very much  We get basic ISO in the base, center stemmed 6u, convex keys and lots of extra 40% staggered compatibility in the extras!! The more uncommon ISO compatibility that wasn't included in the base was removed from the extras. We're waiting on GMK renders but I've attached a KLE to show the changes. I'm super excited to launching real soon  ;D

This is such an excellent project with so many quality people involved. It gives me warm feels just to read the thread. Also, the design is pretty.  :)

Incidentally, the below image of is of PerniciousPony's GMK Stormtrooper set on a Norbaforce case, and I have to say, having seen it in person, I don't think it's a very creamy (i.e., warm) white. I could be wrong, but I remember it being closer to a pure white. FWIW.

Thank you for getting those 40% keys into the extras kit, I'm so excited for this set! I noticed you have a 1u R2 "Delete" in the extras kit, but that isn't necessary since the base already contains a 1u R2 "Delete"  ;)

Those were all because of jchan though, which is probably why Rama is doing everything. Same story with Exent actually.

How were problems with the pcb because of jchan?  There were similar problems with the software for a couple of his pads.

Hang on, I'm out of the loop. What ongoing problem does the M65 have? I thought everyone is happy with that board? Software or hardware?

Yes, ESD protection is not very good, apparently.  And problem with components and assembly.  The thread has a few issues like that, and on a premium board, I'd not expect the problems with the PCB and such.  Like I said, cool design, and I wanted one.  But like many things I've missed, I'm glad I didn't get in.

Hopefully the second run for restock on KeyClack will have better luck.  Won't buy 'til onhand though at best.  I feel for jchan and his personal issues, but that doesn't mean I'm going to throw money and hope for the best...

The thing is that the M60 and the M65 aren't going through the same people. M60 is run by Rama himself and not through Keyclack. I've never had any issues with Rama run buys.

Could be and we'll see.  I've never seen him run a full buy of this magnitude before.  And logistics are a ***** on something like this.

I assume it's way too late for this, but any chance of an R2 1.5u backspace for split backspace/HHKB style boards? That R2 backspace in the extras kit looks like a 2u, I guess for some 40% boards?

The 3-D renders seem to target a higher intensity pink shade than the more neutral warmer beige Pantone 55-9 C seen on the layout schematic.  Having looked up 55-9 C, I do wonder now how much warmer/more orangey-beige it will end up vs "rose gold" anodized keyboards, which tend to be more on the pink side, and not quite like true rose gold (for instance, Apple's Rose Gold is definitely too pink compared to real rose gold).  It's one of my favorite materials, but I did concede a while ago that "rose gold" anodized things look more pink rather than rose gold.  I am paying extra close attention to shade variations in this set to understand what it will be like, since I have a "rose gold" anodized M65-a and a TKL with a "rose gold" aluminum plate and accents.

Yeah but as someone who likes to put Del in the top right of a split backspace layout, having an actual Backspace legend on that 1.5u R2 cap is nice. Delete right on top of Delete doesn't really look right :)

It's not going to change at this point. You could always put a different R1 key there, for example the - from the numpad might work well for delete.

Looking over the renders I'm seeing a handful with a R2 1.5U Backspaces but the kits themselves don't seem to have them?

I did see a R2 1.5U Delete key which honestly wouldn't bother me too much, but I was just curious if this set would/would not include the said Backspace.

Right! I knew I wasn't going crazy, I'd seen it in one of the renders :) Would have brought it up earlier if I hadn't seen it there.

It's interesting to me that the 1.5u backspace isn't standard across all the GMK sets trying to achieve max compatibility with common layouts. It only shows up in about half of recent sets, I feel like.

I think this is just because "Backspace" is too long to fit in one line on an 1.5u key and with the line break it does not look that good. So going for "Delete" is the best option if you do not want to use this ugly cross in a box icon or the arrow, which just looks like a left arrow key.

If it is not too late to change it, you should consider adding a 2.75 U spacebar to the extras kit. That way you could cover splitspacebar layouts, since you already have a 2.25U in the kit

I agree the icons aren't great (my preference is the left arrow looking icon), but "Backspace" does fit w/o a line break. GMK Serika has it, and I can't recall which older sets have it but I'm pretty sure Serika isn't the first.

I personally prefer the left arrow icon as well; in a way similar to GMK 9009 or GMK Taro

It is a bit late unfortunately :( There is a 2.75u right shift that could be used for split spacebar though, sorry!

Regarding the 1.5u Backspace key, I didn't want to do an icon only, or a version of backspace with without the icon or line break so Delete was the only remaining choice :D
