[GB] MW Voynich | Shipping to vendors and customers!
« on: Mon, 21 March 2022, 10:24:21 »
MW Voynich

Vendors
United States: Cannon Keys
Canada: KanataKeys
EU: MyKeyboard.eu
UK: Prototypist
SEA: Hex Keyboards
Oceania: Daily Clack
China: Milky Way
India: Rectangles.store

Group Buy Dates: March 21 - April 22, 2022
Estimated Fulfillment Date: Q3 2022

An elegant set based on the mysterious Voynich Manuscript

I have always found the Voynich Manuscript to be a fascinating document. Regardless of its questioned authenticity, this document dates back to the 15th century and has long been a topic of discussion for its art, unknown origins, and cryptographic puzzle. If you're interested in learning more, I highly recommend The Histocrat's The Voynich Manuscript video

This set utilizes the Voynich 101 (V101) font developed by Glenn Claston, allowed under Public Domain usage. Given that the Voynich Manuscript has never been deciphered or translated (if it can be), further liberties were taken on certain characters (not necessarily mapped 1:1 to its ASCII Latin counterpart) for either aesthetic or functional reasons (such as overlapping on homing bumps).

is there a particular reason why the brass artisan is in r2?

I thought it'd be cool to have some variety instead of just two R1s. Figured it'd look good on TKL delete key, 40s escape key, or 660 cluster alongside the Hibi! I'm sure there are other ideas people will come up with.

Mono cause I want to use the novelties and the set would look too crowded when paired with sublegend Alphas.

You mean people prefer to have latin alpha in order to use the caps? That's how majority works. Also, there are buyers who joined 2 alpha sets. So irl, the number of people who only join mono is significantly low

Yeah, it's quite odd since sublegends ruin the aesthetic of the set, but there are apparently a lot of people who never learned "touch typing".

According to CannonKeys update back from 2 weeks, the manufacturing has been finished and set is being shipped to them, ETA 1-2 months.
So, I expect shipping to begin in mid-February.

Thanks, apologies for not updating this thread.

Yes, latest status is that sets have been shipped from the manufacturer. Depending on number of orders and shipping speed, some vendors are already shipping to customers while others are awaiting shipment still. All group buy orders should be out in the next couple of months.

Am I the only one disappointed by the color matching of these? In all the renderings & photos the color looked beige with a hint of yellow, but the actual product in hand is pretty much light mustard yellow with no hint of beige. Not sure I would be able to trust another set by MW or the same designer again if this is their level of QC.

I think its perfect and exactly as I expected.so I don’t agree at all. I am very impressed with mw, definitely better than ePBT. The color matching done here is just about perfect to eyes. Definitely not too dark or too yellow; but just right

Yes, to my eyes the base color definitely turned out too yellow/dark, and I think that also caused the dyesub novelty colors to be more muted than expected.  Of course many others will disagree.  Ultimately it's the designer's decision to OK the samples according to their design vision and preference, and that's what we get.  We're commissioning an artwork, and the artist does what they think is right.  Most group buy sets I've received have been significantly different than the proposed colors, and at this point I'm far more concerned about this pattern of shifting colorways than about any production delays that most people talk about.

I haven't gotten my set yet, but how are you guys deciding what is the color that you see on the computer screen? It's been discussed many times before, but what you see on your screen may or may not be close to the actual color. Even when you check the same photo/render on your pc vs your phone, likely you are going to see different colors. And obviously having color calibrated monitors are not enough either since it obviously depends on how the photo is taken as well. Without comparing the keycap to the picked pantone, I don't think it is possible to claim they are different. And if the pantone matches the keycap, then it means that the designer did their job, but you don't like the end result. Which is fine but doesn't make the designer in fault.
I don't mean that there isn't issue here, since there may be. Hopefully the designer can share side by side photos with the pantone picked and keycap to clear things up.

Images on the computer screen are the only thing we have to go by.  "Pantones" don't mean anything on the buyer's end.

BTW, this set seems to look really good on a keyboard with a shiny red/garnet aluminum top.  Saw photos someone posted of that combo and kicked myself for not buying a bright red case for my KBD75 that was on sale over the holidays.

I agree and that is the inherent risk of buying keycaps unfortunately. Maybe one day the hobby gets big enough and there are GMK keycaps on Walmart shelves that we can see and pick :D Until then unless designer announces pantone colors picked and you have those pantones chips at hand to look at, it is really hard to know the exact color.

I definitely agree that the actual set looks different to what I would have expected if I went off the renders + sample photos alone.

The base colour is definitely slightly yellower than what I would have expected. I think I would have preferred something a little more tan / cream. The set I have in front of me currently doesn't quite evoke the feeling of aged paper / manuscript.

The legends are definitely less vibrant than in the renders. There's nowhere near the level of contrast between the different colours and the physical keys don't have the same impact that the renders do.

That said - I want to be clear, I am super happy with this set. I think that the key is expectations. Milky Way doesn't have a reputation for fantastic colour matching / dye-sub. I didn't buy this expecting it to come out like the renders - I was always happy to accept a pretty wide variation in physical appearance.

For me, this set was an easy buy because a) the design is unique and fantastic - you can tell that a lot of work has gone into it and there's nothing else in the hobby like it, b) it was very well priced, and c) Dede's got a good reputation for running solid GBs and I trusted him not to ship utter garbage.

This is a great keyset. It's not something I'll put on a super high end board, but I've got it on a wooden minivan currently and I reckon the colours go fantastically with the wood - the browns of the alpha legends match the wood nearly perfectly. The unique legends are awesome and in-and-of-themselves are just super nice to look at. It's a great set.

I loved the design as well as the idea behind it, but I am greatly disappointed with the colour matching. I think the light pee yellow was a bit too much. It kind of killed the vibe of the set with those gorgeously designed novelties. I hope that if this gets a second run, we could see some revisions!

Well, we've got what we've got...  The best backdrop for the set that I've seen so far is a rich red/burgundy anodized aluminum keyboard case.  Unfortunately KBD75 was killed before I could get a red shell for mine, and pickings are slim for deep red aluminum cases.  I'm wondering if anyone else has any examples of case colors that seem to harmonize well with the set?
