Advice: First Chinese Mech KB: Team Wolf Zhuque vs Z-88
« on: Wed, 08 November 2017, 16:52:35 »
Mechanical keyboard noob here. Need some advice. Which one of these is a better value?

These are all the keyboards that I found that have swappable switches (no soldering). Excluding "Glorious PC Gaming Race" / "GMMK".

I'm choosing from these 3:

Team Wolf "ZHUQUE*"

No reviews, but here for completeness.

Cheers

I own the first z88 you listed there. I swapped out the switches for kailh coppers.

I broke half the stock switches pulling them out. Thy have a gap for led shine through, and that’s where they cracked. They’re REALLY stuck in those slots hard.

Idk if I’ll have the same problem pulling out the coppers or not.

Overall it’s a decent board with the main benefit being it uses very standard sized keys for everything, so you can swap caps at will. Perfect for me as it’s kind of my switch and cap testing board.  The stock caps are junk, of course.

Pretty much just what you’d expect for the price—not bad, but not great either. I don’t regret my purchase at all as it’s pretty much what I expected.

I have a Zhuque and I really like it. It works well.

SMD compatible switches sit a little more secure in the plate but I have used non SMD switches plenty of times without issues, there doesn't seem to be any extra wobble added or anything.

Well, one way to define “swappable”.

I have the Zhuque model you are considering (X05) and a different Kananic (TK-1, 104-key).

The Zhuque build quality is great. On the Kananic is acceptable but it's clear it's been designed with cost-cutting in mind.

The Zhuque comes with Outemu switches, which are very good, particularly if you choose the blue ones.

My Kananic uses Content switches, which are OK (I chose the black ones for this keyboard) but they have surfaced only recently and it's difficult to speak of their longevity. Generally they're a budget choice.

The keycap and switch removal tool (2-in-1) you get with the Zhuque is also much nicer (something you'll presumably be using a lot).

Not sure about the value as I don't know the prices you are being offered but if the cost is similar, I'd go for the Zhuque.

You can check out a review of the Kananic L/S 82 here (in Chinese, but there are some pictures at least): https://bbs.wstx.com/thread-693839-1-1.html

On one of the photos in the Kananic review you can see that there isn't even a JST connector for the USB link and it's all hardwired and glued to the PCB instead. This is the extent of cost saving they go through. Zhuque on the other hand feels like a really nice piece of engineering, especially compared to this. While some of these details you won't see unless you disassemble the keyboard, I'd expect the Zhuque to last much longer: the PCB is nearly twice as thick and nearly does not flex. The switch sockets are much more sophisticated too.

Note that the cheapest all-black, no-backlight version of Kananic L82 does not have hot-swappable switches.

I tried the mechanical eagle Z88 and ended up returning it.  Although it has cherry-style switches, it uses a switch with thinner, rounded pin design, and not the flat style that most other cherry switches use.  I tried swapping with cherry, gateron, and Otemu switches, and all of them had issues going into the Z88 pin slots, and I bent/broke pins on most of them.

I then got one of the zhuque boards, and I was able to swap out switches just fine. build quality is ok, about what you'd expect for a keyboard in this price range.  but it does give you the flexibility to easily try out different key switches, which is what I got it for.  It's really hard to get a "feel" for how a switch really feels by pressing only on one switch.  I'd put in about 15 switches (one full side of alphas) to figure out what I liked, and then use those switches in another more expensive keyboard I was building.

it's really nice to be able to try different spring/stem combinations without having to deal with soldering a whole bunch of switches, and commit to building a board with something you aren't 100% sure you like.

Also, Glorious now sells a naked TKL version of their modular switch keyboard without keycaps and switches for $60.  The quality is better than the zhuque, and it has full LED lighting if that is important to you.

I've just looked at the GMMK. It's apparently based on another Chinese keyboard that I also have, modified for hot-swapping. The switch sockets seem to be of the better kind, like on the Zhuque, but the Zhuque case quality seems much higher to me (all-metal vs ABS plastic with metal on the top plate only, with an edge that will get scratched easily).

The GMMK does have RGB backlight though, which the Zhuque does not, as it's a 2015 design. The Kananic L/S 82 has an RGB version as well. The Zhuque's biggest weakness is the garish backlight (different unrelated color for each row). It improves the looks tremendously when you change all the LEDs to white/warm white.

There's the underlying question of the layout as well. I'd recommend going for the standard 87-key TKL over the 82, which isn't really that much smaller but much less comfortable to use (a matter of preference though). You'll also have much more choice of replacement keycaps. On the other hand, the keycaps on the Kananic L/S 82 are one of the nicest things about it, as they're PBT and the typeface is more neutral. The Zhuque keycaps, although not PBT, have a somewhat better feel to them than the standard ABS but you'll likely want to replace them anyway due to the ugly "gamer" typeface (which for some reason appears on most Chinese keyboards).

In any case, I'd advise against using O-rings, as they don't really make things much more silent but ruin the feeling of bottoming-out (again, a matter of preference though). If you decide to go for the O-rings anyway, be aware that with the cheaper key sets you'll likely have to stack multiple rings per keycap (3-4 perhaps, depending on the row).
