LED Displays: Old vs New

What is the difference and why do the old ones look so much better?
Brighter, sharper, more colourful... Old LED displays on calculators, clocks, watches etc. just look so much better..

..in general anyway. Im sure there are exceptions...

Is it just down to less efficient devices and therefore higher powered LED's resulting in higher brightness?

EXAMPLE: OLD LED display:

And new NEW LED displays:

Maybe running at 3.3V instead of 5V (or higher)?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Could it have something to do with the old covers being thicker and not crystal clear so adding a bit of fuzziness?  The modern ones all have gaps in the corners which just looks bad.

Modern ones are LED backlit LCDs.. The big numbers are big LCDs with tiny LED backlit.   This works fine for smaller displays because the led is the size of the lcd. but big ones look lackluster.

No one is using VFDs anymore.
