DIY Detachable USB Mod
« on: Fri, 28 December 2012, 13:49:03 »
Alessandro posted how to do this a while a ago and thanks to him I tried it today. Here's my journey, hope it helps someone out!  :D

P.S I know my soldering skills aren't the greatest. I also acknowledge that  I used pliers and scissors to "cut" the hole for the mini b usb cable to fit flush with the case -- I don't own many tools. I'd recommend doing this with a dremel, a better soldering iron and heat shrink.

Thanks again Alessandro!

I dont think it is required to solder the shielding wire together ?
Can anyone verify this.

I'm pretty sure you can skip it, I  was just trying to keep everything together.

Thanks for documenting this! I saw Alessandro's thread as well and I'm glad someone else tried it as well. I was thinking about trying this with my Filco but I haven't decided 100% on it yet.

It's definitely worth it if you switch keyboards a lot your take your board with you places. Very handy, I wish more boards came with a removable cable.

Very simple straightforward steps.  Although I would have used heat shrink tubing rather than electrical tape.

Well done :)
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Heh, yes I know. If I had the right tools it'd probably turn out a lot nicer.
