Disclaimer: we do not officially support this color combo because PC and aluminium version are manufactured by 2 different factories and we cannot guarantee the compatibility will be perfect. (although in this case it is)

Thank you for coming in.

BOCC is an embodiment of utility and aesthetics. This unique layout not only serves properly on a daily use basis, but also is a great layout to display the beauty of our beloved keysets in a unique form.

The design philosophy of this board is inspired by the first carrier of this unique layout - Kmac Mini. The robust utility it offers and the aesthetic of the whole board is pure joy to look at. We hope not only to bring back this layout to our beloved community, but also we would like to try something new this time - a non-traditional mounting system.

Traditional top mounting system requires the screws to lock in the plate from the bottom case to the top case, while having the PCB suspended in between when it is fully assembled. We hope to alleviate, if not eradicate the reverbs that the suspension of the PCB would cause, thus, the mounting system we proposed will be having the PCB screwed and locked in to the bottom case, while the plate will be screwed in and locked in place on the top case.Another thought we put into this design is that we hope that whoever appreciate hot-swappable PCB could easily change the plate by unscrewing it off the top case and swap it to another material to experience different typing feel. Last but not the least, user can enjoy the plateless set up on this mounting system as well.

Specification of the board:

*Please note that although render colors are not representing the final product, most of the renders above reflect their color faithfully; however, Baby Blue is not perfectly accurate to the sample that we are looking to get, the final product should be more light. The color of Cyan/Tiffany Blue in the render should be very close to the actual color now.

Here's the BOCC PC prototype pictures!

Before having a glimpse of what the actual board looks like, or asking some questions that you may already have when you saw the pictures, please read the followings,

This is a prototype that was meant for us to inspect the CNC finishes and see if there is any nitty-gritty the factory may have overlooked - which is why it is a NOT the actual retail version of BOCC; but you can have a rough picture of how it will look like. There are some known issues and had been sent back to the factory for further calibrations.

Known issues are as follows,

These issues had all been reported back to the factory long before this has come to my possession. Since we are implementing triple QC, I am the last gatekeeper to make sure things won't go wrong, I can confirm that the aforementioned issues were the only problems found, which is identical to the second gatekeeper's testimony.

These are BOCC PC is plugged to power, the glowing effect stands out pretty nicely.
[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]
[attachimg=3]

[attachimg=4]
[attachimg=5]

As you can see from the picture, the PCB is mounted on the bottom case, it will be sturdier than the traditional top mounting system because the latter one, if not all, has their PCB alleviated in between plate and bottom case. We hope to eliminate the reverbs caused by typing and provide a more singular bottom out experience with this mounting system.

Since the tray mounting points are not the traditional one - distributed across the board with mounting point pillars, instead, its on the edge just as shown in the picture. What we hope to do with this is that it could in turn give more flex and a more unified stress distribution across the alphas.
[attachimg=6]

The CNC work here is precise and on point. As you can see the weight is soundly and firmly sitting in between the cutouts, the tolerance in between the case and weight is so small that it seems like its perfect fit.
[attachimg=7]
[attachimg=8]

There are overwhelming backlit RGB led at the back of the PCB; 4 on both sides, 12 sits across the alphas - making it altogether a whopping 16 backlit RGB led.
[attachimg=9]

From this picture, you can see how the mounting system works, the PCB is locked in place to the bottom case; while the plate is screwed to the top case from the bottom case.
[attachimg=10]

We will not be using this as our typing demo and tear down video for obvious reasons.

For spec geek -
PC prototype (without keycaps and switches | PC Plate) - 1115g.

Aluminium early bird will be done soon, the ETA for the video would be Mid-Sep.
We know there is a need for prototype tester, we will see if there is extra left for accepting public tester. If there is, we will make relative announcement.

Looks really sweet. Think you're going to blow through those run amounts pretty quickly.

This double mounting system... is it the same for both the Alu and PC? Will be interesting to see how well it works out in the prototype.

Before I even get remotely hyped for a poly version of the kmini, would you;
- have some expanded views of how the mounting is supposed to work
- more information about the sale type? as in; raffle or fcfs.

Thank you for your interest!

We will be adding the exploded view of the construction of Kmini.
As for the sales type, we are still uncertain which will suit best with the sales as we still need to garner interests so we could have more solid data to work on. We are going to dish out the IC form soon. Stay tuned!

So are other plate options available for the aluminum version or is this also exclusive for the polycarbonate version. Hopefully the quantity for those get expanded since the mounting is really interesting.

Would you consider having having a blocked 1u at the top right corner, similar to some 65% board? I think it would help aesthetically, and avoid being too similar to the KMAC Mini.

Firstly, design is beautiful and the prices are really nice and competitive. Lovely to see.

I may be missing something but regarding the colours, are all of them going to be done by electrophoresis or just the white? Sort of hard to tell from the phrasing, I assume it's just the white since that's the only one that's prefixed but with the little note below regarding how the process works, I'm sorta hoping they're all e-coated.

PS: will there be options for plate material in addition to the standard stainless steel for the aluminium version?

For now, aluminium will come with a non-hotswappable / bluetooth PCB
We are planning to open the options for extras, such as plate or PCB, but the decision is not finalized until the IC phase is over.

No, since we would have to modify the PCB to fit the bottom case screw hole for PC version, it wouldn't be compatible with the aforementioned PCB.

I concur.  ISO support and what about doing it right and adding the keypad to the right to balance the function keys on the left.  That would be my ultimate design.

Don't ruin elegant design with a janky "universal" plate for ISO. If people actually BUY ISO, they should use a different plate.

So what you're suggesting, but I'm gonna put it in much more friendly words, is that there should be 2 plates options; one ansi and one iso.
Very good suggestion sir.

Hey guys, a small update here as I’m out of town now and don’t have my laptop to modify the thread.

PVD stainless steel sidebar is possibly gonna get scrapped off the table due to high manufacturing cost. Instead, we are leaning to offer sandblast brass sidebar weight for alu version.

Sorry guys for bombarding all the new updates that frequently, but we hope to maintain a transparent communication window for both parties.

Quote
the mounting system we proposed will be having the PCB screwed and locked in to the bottom case, while the plate will be screwed in and locked in place on the top case.Another thought we put into this design is that we hope that whoever appreciate hot-swappable PCB could easily change the plate by unscrewing it off the top case and swap it to another material to experience different typing feel. Last but not the least, user can enjoy the plateless set up on this mounting system as well.

- So if my understanding is correct… it’s top-mounting the plate and tray-mounting the PCB. But it requires the right amount of space between the plate and the PCB such that the switches can sit properly. The tolerance seems hard to achieve
- If someone solders the switches, does she need to screw the PCB to the bottom? I guess no?
- If someone uses a hot-swappable PCB and wants to change the plate material, she would still need to pop out all the switches, unless she has the same 70 switches on the other plate already. Doesn’t seem like an improvement either way.
- so I think it really only enables a plateless setup — a tray mounted plateless setup — which might not sound great imo.

I’m not against your design but if these details could be filled in that’d be helpful.  :thumb:

Basically at date X and time Y, either a website or google form will open allowing you to enter the groupbuy. This can be first come first serve or a raffle for example. From there on the runner collects payments via Paypal invoices and production starts. For keyboards I'd say that somewhere between four and 8 months is the "usual" timeframe. Some are faster, some are a bit longer. Expect delays for sure, it rarely happens that a GB finished on time.

This forum subsection is "Interest checks" / [IC] where people may proposal certain projects with details to see the reaction.
A "Group buy" / [GB] nowadays are mostly just funded projects, instead of meeting a certain MOQ to lower the purchase price of some already available merchandise. It runs very similar to Kickstarter but people are joining just for the product but not essentially funding the production. In some cases, the products turned out not as expected or there are some errors, and buyers are protected just by the "willingness of Group-buy and project runners to protect their own reputation". Quite some people who join Group-buyers lost money and time in some of the bad Group-buys, AKA "getting burnt".

The Doro67 GB is a perfect example of people getting burned. Runner went MIA, no communication, and a poor quality product somehow got delivered unexpectedly out of nowhere.

Okay, a quick update for you all.

We would like to release a barrage of updates now, but the most important element - renders are still in the making, which we think it is one of the most anticipated updates. In light of that, we are holding off the updates which are well ready for release until the renders are done.

ETA would be these 2 days.

The updates will be about -

Updated renders
2nd IC
Lots of updates on details
Finalization on all things

A small teaser would be - we have already ordered prototype ;D. Stay tuned!

Hey guys, the project looks amazing and I love the layout. On an images, I see escape positioned to the right and tilde is on the usual position. This is a great idea! I don't know why I haven't though about re-mapping my esc on 65% I have, will certainly do it today :)

Having functional cluster with 10 buttons on the left is absolutely sweet too! When debugging with 60%-65% I didn't really like the experience of pressing one more button to access f8 or f6. Your design addresses this issue.

One question I wanted to ask is if you have ever considered to put the plate just a millilitre or mil and a half lower? I am looking at my Kira 99 (from Input Club). And one thing that improves the look of it is that the keys are sitting just a little bit lower in the case. What this does is it gives a nice profile of the keyboard with an rgb underglow. The light does not leak from the gap between the bottom of the cap and the top of the case.

I do not know, honestly, why this is not done on every mechanical keyboard. Even low-profile'ish keycaps like dsa look great on it.

This is an example of a light bleed I was referring to in a Bocc example which, of course, is a common thing and uncommon is to see this addressed:

[attachimg=1]

And this is how it was addressed in Kira 99 (and it's not the angle, I can provide a few more pictures. Plus I remember Kira designers mentioned they gonna make keys sit lower in the case):

That's because a large part of the mature keyboard community do not use backlight or RGB. It's tacky to be blunt. Yes there are usefulness to it, but the community reflects the opposite.

Also, having keycaps sit above the case is not the goal of high-profile cases which is to hide the switch to keycap gap entirely.

Don't disagree nor agree as I don't have the stats. Bocc PCB is RGB enabled though. Bocc limited edition translucent case is even more about the light (acoustics has nothing to do with translucency).

Also, having keycaps sit above the case is not the goal of high-profile cases which is to hide the switch to keycap gap entirely.
Is there a misunderstanding there between my comment and the response I get? :) I am aligned with you on high-profile cases. They should hide the gap. My point is that most high-profile cases, including Bocc which is designed as a high-profile, don't do that job very well. And I pointed to the case that does it reasonably well (Kira 99)

This is incredible, my Think hasn't even come in yet and I'm already looking at this to be my second custom. Amazing price and amazing design man.

I was just wondering is the E-Yellow color matched to Serika? Imagining a half white half yellow with MT3 and it's got me excited af.

We cannot say for sure, since it heavily depends on the production time of prototype. Not to mention if there's anything go wrong with the prototype, we would have to amend it and wait longer. BUT, if everything goes as planned, we might be looking at Mid-Sep, might.

We cannot promise you if the color of yellow is the same as Serika. BUT, we have ordered prototypes for it, we would take a few pictures of the actual yellow when the production is done so you can have a better sense at the color.

Post by: senryo on Wed, 14 August 2019, 00:32:51

(Attachment Link)

And this is how it was addressed in Kira 99 (and it's not the angle, I can provide a few more pictures. Plus I remember Kira designers mentioned they gonna make keys sit lower in the case):

(Attachment Link)
Hey thank you for the elaborated explanation, it helps us better understand your needs.
For the question you asked, don't worry, we've kept that in mind when we designed the case, the render doesn't reflect the actual state of the final product, but we have accounted this factor into our design philosophy, the light leak issue shouldn't be a problem.

It's a good layout.It would be better if there were a Bluetooth version.

Agree! I understand there might be an interference but PC version might be a viable option for a bluetooth. It was stated though in the first update that the bluetooth has been removed unfortunately and there were a few who explicitly stated they would like to have a non-hotswap, non-bluetooth version.
I'd happily payed more for a blutooth version but I also understand that testing it and making it work just right would take considerable amount of time for the designers of the Bocc. It may not be worth the time and effort if community in general is happy with the board regardless of the blutooth available or not.

Again though, I'm with you on having a blutooth as an option :)

Can we get a more concrete answer on this? Is Bluetooth available at all? In the original post, it was available. Then an update said it was removed on the Polycarbonate version. But what about the aluminum version? Is it still available?

I'd love to have this as BT keyboard! Yes!

We are looking to see if we can offer one more kind of hot-swap PCB that is bluetooth compatible. The case itself has a notch for inserting battery in it, meaning that as long as there is a bluetooth compatible PCB, its all good. The problem is that shipping product with battery is extremely expensive due to the strict international shipping protocol regarding battery item. In light of that, if we do at last decide to offer hot-swap bluetooth compatible PCB in extras, you still have to get a battery somewhere else.

As long as the battery can be purchased from somewhere it's absolutely not a concern for me.
I mean regular li-ion batteries like these [attachimg=1] can be purchased at any corner.
Any DIY online shop would have them.

In summary: without the battery you still have your usb keyboard. With the battery you have your usb keyboard and you can (if you want to) use bluetooth instead.
I'm absolutely up for such an option! I think that would be an absolute badass of a keyboard.

I wouldn't let "not being able to supply a battery" with the keyboard stop you from making Bluetooth PCB. In fact, batteries are so easily attainable these days from sites such as Aliexpress that I think that it shouldn't be a hinder at all.

I'm all for BlueTooth. Bring it on! BT4.0

This is our first run. But, because of that - not saying others wouldn't, we are very devoting to our first run because it sets the cornerstone of our reputation. Although there isn't anything more we could say to make you feel more secured, all we can do is to strive our best to maintain an open and translucent platform where everyone would be able to know our progress, our challenges and a reciprocative communication channel that ensures both parties are on the same ground. This is also why we have a relatively elaborated and detail "Change log" and "Update Summary" section in hopes of letting all of you to know what's going on, and the bigger picture.

I think there is nothing more important than communication with your targeted customers at this phase of a group buy. Listen to the audience, tailor the product to them and create an excellent keyboard.

Just don''t go MIA on us like the DORO67 project. That's was a huge disappointment.

the mounting system we proposed will be having the PCB screwed and locked in to the bottom case, while the plate will be screwed in and locked in place on the top case.Another thought we put into this design is that we hope that whoever appreciate hot-swappable PCB could easily change the plate by unscrewing it off the top case and swap it to another material to experience different typing feel.

:thumb:

Will there be an option for a non-shiny finish for the brass parts? or even an aluminum option would be great. I'd much prefer a finish that won't scratch so easily :)

I’ve been learning that there have been quality issues when it came to electrophoresis coloring for other GBs of the past. Just wanted to know if steps will be taken to ensure BOCC won’t share the same fate, I really like that e-white option.

We noticed electrophoresis coating's flaws, which is why we will make sure the final product is coated with an extra protective scratch resistant coating on top of the original color coating. Although this serves as a defense layer, it does not guarantee nor prevent scratch marks from appearing on the case when it is struck with different degree of forces; and we cannot also ensure that the case will be protected from damages that may be caused during the shipment / handling of the courier service. That said, we will carefully examine all the cases and make sure it is in perfect state before we ship it out and make sure there is enough protection within the packaging; that's the best we could offer and hope that make you feel confident on it.

In this picture, there is a silver weight on the right side (almost cut off). I've also noticed that it is larger than the brass weights on the left. Is this a special weight? I'd love to have a larger weight that is longer on the bottom- Also I think it'll be more porportionate. Is this possible?

Prototype looking good!

Will there be an option for a non-shiny finish for the brass parts? or even an aluminum option would be great. I'd much prefer a finish that won't scratch so easily :)
You can get a sand-blast brass plate on extra.

Quote
the mounting system we proposed will be having the PCB screwed and locked in to the bottom case, while the plate will be screwed in and locked in place on the top case.Another thought we put into this design is that we hope that whoever appreciate hot-swappable PCB could easily change the plate by unscrewing it off the top case and swap it to another material to experience different typing feel.

:thumb:

Still super interested in this keyboard but need some more info on the mounting methods please
- Your understanding is correct. We will carefully monitor the tolerance in between to make sure its a feasible work for all setup.
- You could choose not to, but that defeats the sole purpose of this mounting system in the first place.
- Correct. But comparing to solder PCB, you wouldn't have to desolder all the switches to achieve plate swap.
- I will quote my explanation on Discord here - "Most of the mounting system, if not all, has their PCB alleviated in between cases. There is only 1 thing that consolidates the PCB's position, the plate, obviously, because most people will have their set up with a plate. Which is why sometimes there are many space in between PCB and bottom case, causing hollowness in typing sound or some people might find it not rigid enough and some would add a foam in between the PCB and bottom case in hopes of achieving a more singular bottom out typing sound. One of the reasons we implement this mounting system was that we hope to eliminate these flaws. Also, since the tray mounting points are on the edge, if you are looking to have a plate-less setup, the flex in the alpha would be more significant."

It should be just the camera angle problem, we didn't develop a special weight for BOCC. As for the request, since design is final now, we wouldn't change the weight size unfortunately - and that making it larger means more materials for weight, it entices increase in cost - which we believe many are avoiding it to get more expensive at this point. But thank you for your input.

Yes, this is merely a prototype that was developed before we received feedback and made amendments;
The final product will support both of the mentioned layout.

Joining to 'updates appreciation club'. Thank you for keeping this community in the loop.
New renders clearly show caps sitting deeper in the case to prevent light bleed and mask possible cap distortions at the bottom. I remember you mentioned you took it into account and it is nice to see in the renders too. Thank you for this design decision!

Can you post more renders from the sides (profile of the keyboard) and from behind where the port is or are angles for the render are fixed and you can't control them?

Hmm, we will consider doing so because it inevitably will increase our cost.
But on the other hand, since I am going to get the prototype on hand soon, wouldn't it be better if I showcase the actual product?
There will be tear down and typing demo, rest assured!

Logistically speaking, this is also one less nightmare for me. (I know I'm being selfish)
But the thought of making an error and send out wrong components (considering there are really a lot of customizations going on here), it would take even longer for an one man army to operate the logistic side of work.

I, however understand your point dearly. But sometimes we have to make some compromises and it's always difficult to please everyone on that note. We apologize here if it makes you feel bad about it.

This is the best ever layout I dream of which is kind of an alternative to the 75% layout:

- the left hand function keys

I wish I have enough money for the group buy.

Good luck!

They seem to be taking their time approving it.

Do anyone want different finish top/bottom case? We should get together and organize a swap so we can have the combination we want. Maybe the GB runner will swap the parts for us before shipping.

I like this idea. I want a cyan/white combo. I probably won't order unless I can set up a top/bottom swap with someone beforehand.

Want to buy, but not quite keen on how the GB site and forms are organized.

Order sent! Can't wait to solder some lubed linears (possibly healios or zilents or gat yellows) into this board.
When is the estimated ship date  :)

I mean he asks you fill out a form after submitting your order. That doesn't seem like too big of a burden... the link is even conveniently on the page for the keyboard.

And the link to the form is attached to the Order Confirmation email.

We are sorry for causing the troubles. But given that there are a decent amount of customizations, we want to make sure things are in good shape rather than the orders scrambled altogether and cause confusions from one order to another.

They seem to be taking their time approving it.

Nearly one week later and still no approval? Super weird. >_<

What is up with this prototype? Is the plate just on backwards?

Lol, makes sense. I thought you were offering an option to have the F-keys on the right side at first, then I saw the blocker at the top left.

That’s for truly left-handed users. Flipped layout.

I personally think the current layout is left hand friendly. I use left hand for the mouse during work and gaming so having the function keys easily accessible for my thumb when doing things is really nice.

I see that now from the post above! It was never originally posted here until I brought it up again, so I went on assuming it wasn't approved. That's my bad!  :thumb:

BOCC GB extended
Added ecoat finished early birds pictures

Reasons as follow:
We have decided to extend the GB to 3rd Oct, 2019 GMT+8 00:00. The reason for the extension is because we have not released the typing demo and the tear down video yet and we believe it would leave bad taste in our beloved community's mouth if we proceed to conclude the GB without fulfilling one of the most anticipated requests.
I dearly hope that I will be receiving the early birds by this weekend, so I could have time to assemble it, videotape it and upload to you guys. This is the best we can do for the moment. We cannot postpone any longer due to the fact that in the first place, we have already planned to conclude this GB before the Chinese national day - 1st Oct - which will be a 10 days holiday in China, resulting in paralyzing the production of BOCC inevitably. Regardless if I'm receiving the early birds on time, this will be the set date for the end of BOCC GB.

Awesome! Curious to know the effect of the new mounting system. Please keep us updated on the progress once the production begins.
