30 WPM. Been at that for years ever since learning to type in high school. Now my mom on the other hand was 100+ WPM.

My WPM on TypeRacer is usually in the low to mid 90's but on 10fastfingers I can usually get around 110 WPM.

Depends on the language that I'm typing. I was getting results like 90-95 when I was trying on TypeRacer but english is not my first language.

I can hit 80 wpm on typeracer. I'm not sure which is more real-world accurate. I'm also trying to type quietly cuz its like 2am.
This is SLOW for this neck of the woods, but functional.

I learned to type in high school—on QWERTY, like everyone else. And yes, this was entirely pre-PC, so we're talking typewriters. (Dad gum, where'd I leave my walker...?)

My QWERTY speed never went much beyond 60–65 (which I remember reading back then was in the range "expected of a good secretary"). This, despite typing for hours each day on Bulletin Board Systems, the hobbyist-based precursor of the Internet.

Then I found out about the Dvorak keyboard layout. It make so much sense, I decided to try it. I added the Dvorak layout driver to my DOS AUTOEXEC.BAT startup file (fun chatting with dinosaurs, ain't it?) so my PC (an XT-compatible 286, I think—ha!) was a I didn't move my keys around or relabel them; I just kept a small printout of the Dvorak layout next to my PC, and consulted it only when necessary. (I still chuckle when I see "dedicated" boards with Dvorak and other alternative layouts... The idea is not to look at your fingers!)

It took me two weeks to reach my QWERTY speed—and from the very start, Dvorak felt much more comfortable and natural.

It took me only a month or so to reach 100 WPM. I eventually leveled off at 110–115, where I am today.

It's so simple now to switch to Dvorak on virtually any computer. However, on the rare occasions where I must type something in QWERTY, I have no trouble doing it. It's just not nearly as fast or comfortable (surprise!).

I'm sure the other QWERTY alternatives are just as good, or even better. But if you type a lot, and speed and comfort are important to you, I heartily recommend you shed the ankle-weights that are QWERTY and switch to something easier. :?)

I am teaching myself Dvorak for the challenge. I've only been at it for 30 to 60 min a day for several days. ATM I can type at about 5 wpm. I can type 60 to 80 using QWERTY. I'm wondering if it's worth it for the effort to meet or surpass this. It would take months I would think.

Long time ago me too, mid 170's. I think that could be close to the human limit? Then I got old and had Parkinson's disease. Now reduced to hunt and peck. I picked up the name Typo before they knew it was not a laughing matter. I still code but I have had to drastically reduce my cost due to lack of speed ability. Amazingly I am still a good coder in multiple platforms it did not fry my brain yet. The issue of like 10WPM really sucks bad. Just kind of glad to be alive that's all. I do not need an income anymore but is just what I like to do. Due to my crazy low cost people are busting down my door lol. I am going to completely retire pretty soon though. I mean just using the internet is enough entertainment at this point. Okay sorry, too much information lol.

Thanks for sharing Typo. This is a debilitating disease and I think it's great that you can at least for the moment do what you like to do. It's one of the many diseases that our knowledge is limited, but the treatments have improved. With I think it's pretty amazing that you can still code with the physical and mental symptoms.

mostly around 97-100 word a minute and if i am on a spree 104 x). Just practice sometimes and you will improve i got from 70 wpm tot almost 100.

about 80 wpm. it was about 80 wpm in qwerty, and now it's about 80 wpm in colemak. to my surprise, the layout isn't my limiting factor. it's just the speed i feel comfortable moving my fingers up and down, which would be the same in any layout. but i continue to use colemak because i don't like my hands jumping around so much in qwerty. it's also the same speed whether i type on staggered or columnar keyboards

Wow, I've added about 10-15 wpm to my typing speed by simply dropping the legs supporting the board. I don't know why I always liked them raised, but I notice considerably less wrist strain and less mistakes with the board level.

I'd like to drop the height of the board at least another 6 inches, but with the current setup that is not possible.

Yup, it's definitely more ergonomic to type with a flatter board and It will reduce the strain on your fingers ... some extensive users even have negative tilt

positive tilt on a keyboard is bad unless you're in a situation where the desk is high and you can't do anything about it. writing desks, for example, are higher up

I can type 45wpm... which isn't bad, considering I have nerve damage in my left hand from breaking it (twitch in little and ring finger) and I can't basically feel the top half of my right ring finger due to a bad cut (artery and more nerve damage) ..

blah blah blah... all things considered I don't find 45~ bad at all.

My average goes between 120 and 150 on typeracer, I've had quite a bit of practise. Typeracer seems more useful for practise than 10fastfingers because you're practicing on actual quotes with punctuation.

i don't believe this unless they're using some kind of shorthand like typing with a stenotype. the fastest typists in the world type around 200 wpm

Yeah, it'd be difficult to break ~220 without stenography. Typeracer has some users that have broken that without stenography, but only on short texts.

This is OK. My average is 60-70. 100 and more is only for the gifted.

my wpm is around 95-100 on my whitefox with hako violets, just built an iris though and with that my wpm took a huge hit, down to like 60 on average if I'm lucky.

Getting used to a new keeb is fun though.

Training every day helps too. If you spend only around 15 or 20 minutes just typing in Typeracer or whatever program you use, you can increase your speed. I gain around 10 wpm a week now. Believe it or not, 3 weeks ago, I couldn't even hit 100 wpm.

WPM in 10FF just means is your ability to do the test - top 200 to 1000 most frequently used words in the english dictionary, alpha keys only, no numeric, no punctuation, no modifiers/toggles.

Improving at 10FF involves memorization, sight reading ability and muscle memory. Improvement in 10FF does not help me type faster in my job (paralegal). You will do better at 10FF by developing highly idiosyncratic technique for alpha keys only and you can see this on youtube by watching people do 200+ WPM. I saw a guy do 215 WPM using only index + middle finger + thumb on the left hand and index + middle finger on the right hand. I didn't think it was possible but it turns out it is. I saw another guy do 200 something WPM on a chiclet laptop keyboard and his technique was very unusual. It resembled chording, which I haven't seen anyone do on anything that isn't a steno.

On 10FF my peak WPM is 104 (average 95) over 228 tests (1 minute, top 200 words). In reality my typing speed is much slower than that and more variable depending on how unusual and/or unfamiliar the words and phrases are but its in the region of 50 to 75 WPM. I don't know anyone who can type at conversation speed (200ish WPM) who doesn't shorthand.
