The incompetence at Gainesville Regional Airport is staggering.

I spent a lot of time at Gainesville Regional Airport today.
came to congratulate vesper for becoming 'MURICA?
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

dear vespersaint,
i have no clue why you want to be a 'MURICA,
but it seems you value it,
so there is a cute picture about why 'MURICA is #1,
to congratulate you.

LOL!!! That's a funny comic. It's warranted, but it's not about the ranking! It's about being bro's, bro. Murica bro's. It's also fun to pretend to have benefits.

Today I made my first two custom cables.  I finally got the last few components in the mail to make the cables, so I had to give it a go.

I wanted really small cables to keep my desks uncluttered, so here is my first attempt.  I learned a lot in the process...

I am really enjoying it.  I got serial number 07 (one of my lucky numbers).  :)

I need to build a base for it because it moves around too much right now.  I am just going to find a piece of steel and bolt it to it.

Today I built a base for my Panavise.  It is basically a piece of steel that is 1/4" x 6" x 7" and I put rubber bumpers on the bottom to keep it nice and sticky to my desk.  It is looking like it is going to work beautifully.  :)

Oh and of course I had to GHify it a bit more.  :P

I wouldn't call it 'flimsy', but I would definitely recommend a base.  Basically, if you do not have a base, you have to use two hands to use it.  One hand to hold the vice from moving around, and the other to tighten it.  It is not heavy enough on its own to not walk all over the place when you are trying to tighten it with one hand.

I also noticed that when I was soldering (without a base), if I pressed too hard the vice would slip and move on my desk.  I was doing precision work, so I wanted it to be very solid which is why I built the base tonight.

I was considering just bolting it to a small board and then clamping the board to my desk.  I think that probably would have worked fine as well.

I am really happy with how this turned out.  Definitely worth the $15 on materials and the 30 minutes to build...

PS - I bought the plate in Home Depot in the rebar, cement and foundation section.  I checked all over the place in Home Depot (cause its close to me) and that was the best option I could come up with...

1:00pm - wake up, shower
2:00pm - begin drive to WI
7:05pm - arrive at destination, begin touring home
7:25pm - conclude tour, begin paperwork
8:00pm - conclude paperwork, begin drive back to MN
1:30pm - arrive at taco bell, order food, return home
1:37pm - arrive home

I basically spent 10 hours on the road to look at a house and fill out paperwork.  I do believe that it will have helped my chances of getting the place significantly, but I can't help but think that it might have been a tiny bit inefficient.

I used to run a 10km race every Thursday when I was still in high school. Wish I was still in that good shape.

Today I drove to Cleveland after work to play on halversons pinball machine.

GODDD next time im in the midwest (lol) invite meeba and lets have a pin party.

There's a place that just opened up in Cincinnati that is an arcade that *only* has pinball machines. I'll take you there and to the other arcade near me that's great.

Oh man...I gotta make one of those. It's just a steel plate with some holes and bolts yeah?

Pretty much.  Just use countersunk bolts/screws.  You don't want the sides on the hex head digging into that cheap aluminum casting.  I am going to make one from a leftover piece of stainless when I get my keyboard built.

Repaired an old Yomega Wing Force with a new ball bearing and separators and metal epoxy. Still sucks compared to modern yoyo's.

Pulled my old espresso machine out of the cupboard where it has been since August last year when we moved.

I thought it best to run a few cups of plain water through it.

The first three and a half were gray in colour, with a thick soapy scum floating on the surface.

Then the water reservoir (freshly filled, before anyone asks) ran dry.

So I refilled it and continued.

After another two cups, the soapy scum no longer appeared, and the water appeared mostly clear.

It also stopped smelling like, well, I don't really know what it smelled like, but it didn't smell like water, because water is not supposed to smell of anything, right?

I might run another couple of cups through it just to be sure.

In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

The next cup of water was clear, did not smell, and had absolutely no visible scum floating on top.

Wait, no VISIBLE scum?  What if there was invisible scum?

Let's be positive ...

So I put some coffee in (after washing the coffee container and opening a new bag of ground coffee - another story - my coffee grinder died a long time ago so I just use pre-ground beans) and started it up.

All went well, and I was rewarded with a cup of coffee, with nice crema on top.

It tasted as I recall - somewhat bitter with a few grains of coffee floating around.

Quite nice actually :)

Went to a nature reserve in the archipelago. Looked at flowers. Walked in the woods. Went home.

Went to a PTA meeting before work.  My first PTA meeting.  Kind of surreal, as I kept trying to reconcile the experience with everything I'd seen on TV shows.   ;D
Were you bored out of your mind?

It was interesting.  Kind of like a peek behind the curtain; we get the emails from the PTA throughout the year, this was a chance to see how programs/activities get scheduled and how the budget gets allocated.  It's close to the end of the year, so not a lot on the agenda apart from summer school and some proposed camps.

If you have kids in school, I'd recommend attending a meeting or two.  If nothing else, it helps to remind the PTA that there are a lot of parents they represent.
