I want it!

It'd be great if the centre split has diffused light on each halves, and how about Fn key on the left half?

Also, I would love to see the diffuser go all the way around each part, when split, the middle portion needs RGB imo

Most sets nowadays have a second 2.25 Shift. And I'm sure this layout will allow 1.25 + 1.0 like the Clueboard anyway.

I think most people would pick A (?) since it has more common spaces U i.e. 2.25 and 2.75.
Any chance for non hot swappable PCB?

Looks like a button battery might be used according to the spec list at the top. Is it rechargeable via usb or do you have to just swap out the battery once it is dead like most other wireless keebs?

button battery is not. It is relatively cheap (10 bucks for a set of 10 pcs) and last about 5-6 months of normal use. Sirius has considered a rechargeable li-ion battery but he is concerned about the shipping via air (may not be able to get through air transportation to most countries)

If you guys have suggestions, please share your thoughts!

For option A, is it possible to swap the split space bar around? 2.25 on the left and 2.75 on the right. Much more comfortable on the right thumb.

I really love Option C for the uniformity, but Option A provides the best feasibility with keysets right now.

For me, at least, it allows me to shift backspace down a row.  It’s a small first step in moving your most used keys closer to the home row. It’s also a very easy change to get used to :)

Post by: cyriously on Sun, 13 January 2019, 23:40:32
Split backspace is not having backspace in two separate keys.
In split backspace, backspace key becomes 2 1U keys (which I usually bind to \ and `) and \ becomes replaced with backspace.
Thus we have additional 1 more key and backspace is easier to reach (I hit with my pinky).

Awesome design and feature set, this is definitely grail tier. A few questions:

-Price estimate? Hopefully less than the VEA
-Any chance for a blocker on the left side of the arrow cluster (.25u I think)? I'd be in 100% for that.
-will the diffuser be visible with an aluminum bottom, and is it visible around the entire perimeter of the board?

Thanks!

I definitely want split backspace too.

For me, HHKB layout has made me appreciate backspace being where |\ is located, as it's a more natural and easy reach, at least for me. Then |\ being on the left split of the backspace, and Delete being on right split of it. Besides that, I think it just looks better. More consistent with the left side of the board.

I'm one of those people. For me it's not so much about having 2 keys on the backspace spot, although on my YAS (60%) it's usefull to have a dedicated delete key. What I mostly like about it though is backspace on the \ position. On boards that don't have split backspace I swap them around as well and just ignore what's on the caps.

I honestly wouldn't get this if that's the layout that prevails. I've invested so much in my GMK sets that I wouldn't get a kit that wouldn't let me use them.

I think SA and PBT users would have better luck getting those 3u spacebars.

I too will cry about Option B layout.

Option A’s spacebar size and it’s command key placement was such a winning combo.

Who out there voted for B? There are a lot of you who voted for it (Either that or it was one person voting multiple times?). Convince us why it is the preferred size. And would you accept Option A as a decent compromise? Because by the looks of it, some people aren’t willing to accept Option B at all.

Hopefully it was a mistake I strongly disagree with option B and would not buy.
The only set I know that would fit is the recent ePBT Grayscale which has 2u lshift and 3u spacebar (unless you want to mix n match different keysets which super ugly).
To those picked B, could you please name keysets that has 2u and 3u spacebar keycaps? (or to some extent, non spacebar keys, because putting non spacebar keycaps in spacebar keys is a blaspehmy)

Perhaps they voted B without realizing how difficult would be to find 3u blank keys?
MT3 tty set has 3u blanks, but I didn't order them, of course.

I haven't seen any GMK set that has 3u blank keys.    Option B is absolute fail LOL

Sorry if someone get confused over this, was thinking the space keys were 2u and 3u.
My point still stands, though.
Not enough compatibility.

as the designer of this, i will say the 3U option is the most beautiful layout IMO, but the 3U space bar make me abandon it.

I'm actually going for option A. Not sure I'm ready for 4x 1.25 keys on the left side.

Option D is better, but not exactly my liking.
Probably make one of the left modifier to be 1u so that the left space is 2.25u? (for GMK compatibility because 2u GMK key is not often)

Agree. Needs to be both 2.25 and 2.75 for the bigger bottom row keys.

Four mods and a 2u/2.75u spacebar? Will this really be nice to type on? I’m asking to be convinced.

Option A is still great in my eyes. Best spacebar compatibility. And the mods are great for Mac users.

That's what I would do was well. 3x 1.25, the 2.25 space and a 1u on the outer edge.

1u on the outer edge is definitely the best. 4 modifiers in a row on the left is weird and will move the spacebar too far to the right.

I really hope a layout with no gmk support doesn't win out here. Might I suggest you restart that poll with option D included, but with a lockdown of one vote per ip/google login? I suspect one person with a lot of love for 3u spacebar may be behind the stacking/trolling many votes for option B. I think that because 15 minutes of my free time and curiosity resulted in this shift:[attachimg=1]

I'm aware that the keyboard supports wireless connection, but can I use cable connection nonetheless? I'm kinda worried about the wireless latency coz I play games quite often.

Also may I ask what price point are we looking at?

Based on the UniGo66 experience, there is no latency basically. We will find out soon what solution Sirius (linyaofred in GH) is going to use for this, most likely a better one I would assume if he is going to switch to another solution.

May I ask once more for some space before the arrows? I guess I can solve it myself by omitting the control_right. I’d prefer to feel a distinct left edge with my index finger.

Yeah at first it is weird. I think it will make for a better typing experience though.

Maybe it’s fine for a 60% kb or smaller, but for such a lovely layout like this one, it needs these small details.

It is roughly the same gap as the far left (between the control_left and the F-keys). And it’s a similar gap to my tenkeyless (which would make a comfortable transition for other buyers too).

I like the modifier placement which we’ve settled on, but this is almost a deal breaker. Please prototype it for yourself and see.

/me puts on his `Hat of Understanding`

I’m pleading my case because it’s my own strong preference. But there are other buyers who might think otherwise. Is there anyone else that feels strongly about having the arrows flush against the right_control?

The other thing to consider is that you wanted to use the same case for both PCBs… which means I need to convince *everyone* that the gap is a must have (which it totally is ). That would leave you with the R1 of:

Left:  |1.25|1.25|1.25| 2.25 | 1 |
Right: | 2.5  |1.25|1.25|1.25| |arrows
Right: | 2.75 |1.25|1.25| 1 | |arrows
Right: | 2.75 |1.25| 1 |1.25| |arrows

First option might be too difficult to get spacebars for?

But what does everyone think?

Post by: Koatl on Wed, 30 January 2019, 11:27:59
But what does everyone think?

I understand the appeal, both aesthetically and for more efficient typing, but I've never needed that space nor found it beneficial.

The spacing makes right side 1.25 (x3) look much better, which I like a lot, but it limits options. If I understand this correctly, we'd be stuck with 2.25 | 1.25 (x3) on the right side as anything else would look awkward or simply wouldn't fit. In the image linyaofred posted, there is a 2.25 and (3) 1.25, for a total of 6u available space. So the latter two options you posted for the right side won't actually fit.

If we want left side to be consistent with right side we'd stuck with 1.25 (x3) | 2.25 | 1u, which means two 2.25 keys as spacebars. That might be a problem. To accommodate the 2.75 bar we'd have to use 1.5 | 1.25 | 1.5. Who knows, that may work for some people. But it would feel imbalanced to me. Even though I do feel it looks pretty good.

Personally I liked linyaofred's prior layout best. 1.5 | 1.25 | 1.5 | 2.75 on left, 2.25 | 1.5 | 1.25 | 1.5 on right. With separate holes in PCB for option of 1.25 (x3) | 2.25 | 1u on left and 2.75 | 1.25 (x3) on right. I think this creates the best versatility and functionality to accommodate the biggest range of preferences.

I just realized that the right shift is also 2.25. This would mean no base kit I'm aware of would have enough shifts. Any chance of having a split right shift option as well? I think a 1.25u and 1u there would get us down to 2 2.25u and 1 2.75 in a best case and would allow base kits to fully cover the layout.

+1 for the spaced off arrow cluster. As someone who has tried most of the layouts out there long-term, I must say this is a godsend for anyone who uses the arrow keys often, especially for coding. Even in the case that you don't, it is pretty helpful to have a physical barrier to the arrow keys to help with homing, especially when using a split board. I personally like the aesthetic, but that's just an opinion.

Couple of questions: it says pre-soldered in the notes for the board, as well as hot swap sockets, does this mean this kit will come partially assembled and all we need to do is pop in some switches and caps and screw together the case? Sorry if I'm misunderstanding that.

Also will it use QMK?

Well, the symmetric spacebar in layout B and C looks better to me due to aesthetic issues. Layout B uses almost all ansi mod keys like 1.25u ctrl alt cmd, making it easier to find keycaps. All in for B!

Also, the 4 mm integrated plate seems to be popular these days. Would you please consider that?

use a mitosis layout for testing.
now the rgb in receiver of the keyboard works

and we have succeed in making it compatible with VIA Configurator (a testing version) to make the layout programming easier for beginner.

things TBD before the keyboard ready:
1. Multimedia keys on receiver.
2. RGB underglow on the left and right side of the keyboard.

Option D is better, but not exactly my liking.
Probably make one of the left modifier to be 1u so that the left space is 2.25u? (for GMK compatibility because 2u GMK key is not often)

like this?

but the option A looks better.
Most of custom split keyboard I see (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, because splits is kinda a niche layout) have another key in between the spacebar.
I have three splits, both of them has 1U in between the space keys and one of them not (this is one is mass manufactured, if I have the chance to have a key in between the spacebar, I would).

In my opinion, the reasons for this are:
  • The lower right of the left side of the split keyboard is where the natural thumb rests. If we have two keys easily reachable, it's more ergonomic. If all the modifiers on the left split are all on the left of the spacebar, your left thumb will travel more
  • Since both of my splits are using Bootmapper, double action (FN/SPACE in one key) is not available or reliable enough. Thus having individual keys for FN and Spacebar is preferred.  This related to number 1 since it's more ergonomic to have two keys near.
  • Since not all people use the same hand for hitting the space (I personally use my right thumb when typing, and left thumb while gaming, obviously) I personally don't expect all of the people binds their space keys with space and FN. For me I bind both space keys with space. Thus having an extra key for FN is preferred

And again, this purely my opinion and does not represents major users of split keyboards.
Another thing to keep in mind since it will use QMK, I heard good things with the double action (FN/space) feature. Can someone chime in?
So option D would not be a dealbreaker for me.

In my opinion for the layouts,
This post > Option A (because standard 2.25u and 2.75 space keys) > Option D.
Other options, I would not buy, sorry.

So it would look like this (sorry for the lazy layout...) for the left side bottom row.

I used a 2.75 (space/backspace), 1.25 (FN), 2.25 (space/delete) split spacebar 60's for a long time and also used 2.25,1.25,2.75 for a while.  Now I use a non-split spacebar (space/FN).

I used the 1.25 a lot (+ IJKL for arrows) and for long use the 2.75,1.25,2.25 is a lot more comfortable to me...but the tradeoff was the 2.25 was a little cramped (I space with my right hand and have to curl my thumb a little).  With 2.25,1.25,2.75 the 1.25 was a little stretch...annoying to me because I used it constantly.

Lately I've been using a normal spacebar (space/FN)...for aesthetics on my M65A :)  There's a slight delay when using space/FN that can be a downside for gamers.  I also really miss not being able to backspace/delete on the split spacebar.

IMO a 2-way split spacebar is the best compromise.  Since I space with my right hand, I'd prefer the 2.75 on the right side so it doesn't feel cramped.  No space/FN on the left space so it doesn't impact gaming...right space can be used for space/FN...so I can still use my thumb for FN.  It's the best of both worlds to me.

Some side notes:
- I still use FN + IJKL for arrows even on 65%.  The dedicated arrows are inconvenient to me.
- Just my opinion of course but I like split spacebar backspace way way better than the HHKB backspace spot.  I can live without delete on the split.
The reasoning for both is my fingers rarely need to stretch from the home row.

Almost forgot!  I'm excited for this board...I've got a Unigo66 on the way and if it works well I'll probably (GMK carbon burned my wallet whole) get in on this drop.

I don’t know.

I remember reading about this a few years ago when the app icons changed. And they did the same curve for the Mac Mini and Apple TV.

You're tempting me a lot with this and the Think65 :)  Based on Unigo66 (great btw), I think some battery related improvements would be nice.

To change batteries on the Unigo66, you have to remove the back of the case by unscrewing 5 small hex screws on each side.  I'm concerned they'll get stripped eventually (I already partially stripped one).  I'd like to see more robust screws, or better yet, a simpler way to change the batteries.

I don't like dealing with button batteries.  The button battery enclosure isn't very sturdy and getting the batteries in and out of it is kind of a hassle.  I'd prefer standard AA or AAA batteries instead of button batteries especially if they'd last longer.  I wouldn't mind at all if this meant a heavier or bulkier case.

This is not surprised at all, actually we call this a G2 continuity , there are G3 and G4 continuity in car body design, which means the change rate (even the change rate of rate of change) of curvature are continuously

So was a layout option decided upon?

New pic only reveals to me that my PCB interpretive skills are weak.

It would be really nice to have split backspace option. I love the design, however it would be even better if diffuser was flush with the rest of the case instead of having this "crack"

it can not work with unigo66 now. but we will soon make a updated pcb for unigo66 which can work with the micro pad receiver and even the via-config. it will be on sale after we fully tested it.

Does the PCB proto mean that the blocker before the arrow keys has been ruled out? It would be awesome to at least have it as an option, as it's only a .25u blocker

+1 for the .25u spacer before the arrows!!

Many great keyboards have it and for good reason. I’m tempted put a low-profile XDA on that right control to make the arrows somewhat distinguished.

Interested.

+1 spacer between arrows ;
+1 keep the bottom row with 2.75/2.25 spacebars to be compatible with most keycap sets (gmk,epbt,Sa stuff, mt3,etc.);
+1 for hotswap
+1 layout A

Extra:
- beige/white color option pls
- keep it under 300$ shipped

Whoa. The VE.A 2nd IC had its first update in ages… might steal some of the thunder from this.

I don’t see what their fuss is about.

I’m in the market for a split keyboard. I was pissed that I missed your UniGo66. And if there was nothing else I might be interested in the VE.A… but this Uni660 is too beautiful to pass up. Less useless keys and less crammed. Nicer mod placement (after some community input). Solid aluminium. Gasket mount. Wireless (with neat looking receiver). Underglow.

I’m so excited with every update. Keys and switches are sitting at home waiting for this. Keep it up.

Yes,it is on prototype, but no problem with gmk caps, and will redesign PCB layout for switch as normal in group buy set.

Yes, basiclly like you said. But there will be a receiver dock pcb to hold 2 usb receiver and support keymap changing. You can search Unigo thread(same design by Sirius).

I think the receiver is basically a usb2usb with integrated USB hub for two USB input devices(i.e. unify dongles). This one is not much difference apart from it's integrated two unify dongles into a signal PCB.

Don't get me wrong about dissing about this GB. I'm just surprised that there's could be an IP infringement and no one mentioned it.

Designer made wireless solution by himself, the receiver is just same as a small memory stick. I already used the new board 3 days with long time csgo game, all working well, I got a full wireless game set finally. The layout modification can easily using VIA which created by Olivia:)(hihihi). I like this clear and silver combo very much,I call it "Frozen". And there will have frosted and golden PVD version later. We will see that beauty in a not long future.

I love my Unigo66 and can't wait for the Uni660  :thumb:

Will it be easier to deal with battery changes in the Uni660 though?  My only complaint with the Unigo66 is that I worry about stripping the tiny hex screws esp bc I have to change the CR2032's every month or so.

You need to open case to change batt, but the batt can be used 1 year at least by design purpose, so I think its not a problem of changing batt.

Excellent!!! It was hard to tell scrolling through this thread whether it was going to be supported.

Can somebody elaborate on what exactly "button battery' means here? Is that just the battery to drive wireless mode?

some of the description are outdated, irrc the board uses 2 triples A batteries each on both hands.

Sirius said batteries last for 2000 hours of continued use. That would amount to a little bit more than 83 days of straight up typing.

2 months is more than enough for my needs..

Just got pointed to this from this post on the VEA (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=98324.msg2904269#msg2904269) and I think this keyboard is super cool! Really love the Option D layout especially — I'd be thrilled to have four modifier keys to the left of the spacebar, though I guess this is a pretty unpopular opinion based on the layout poll haha.

oldcat, I think it'd be worth updating the dates in the OP to include the year somewhere for people like me who find it late. When I first looked this IC thread up I wasn't sure it was the right one because the post date was February 2019 and it just says "June". Love the board though. :)

Will update more details as the official vendors are worked out by Sirius, and I will ask him to personally update more often. Last I heard GB will be late May/early June.

Again, this is another IC/GB I merely help out by doing the translations. I will not be involved in any capacity with the Group Buy process, which will be handled by vendors Sirius work with.

Sirius has confirmed that for the first batch of ready-to-ship stocks, the only vendor will be ilumkb.com! Feel free to reach out to Louis if you have questions regarding the GB format. I heard only 50 sets available.

There will be future GB-type runs at other vendors, which are not confirmed yet.
