I am passionate in providing support to relevant issues that are happening in the world. Therefore, all designer profits from the first month of sales will be donated to the Black Lives Matter Support Fund through blacklivesmatter.com. Social injustice in America has recently become a larger issue than ever before, and I believe that contributions from the sale of this set will help the campaign immensely.

Hold up, so let me get this straight. So you clearly state that you would like to support Black Lives Matters, via a set that has Katakana (MiTo's Katakana because you were told months ago that you can't use Masterpiece Katakana molds), an Asian language? And yet the only thing of value that would relate to BLACK culture, is the color of the damn keycaps?
You seriously need to re-evaluate what you are trying to accomplish with this. I'm all for supporting the movement of BLM but this is a sad take of 100% cultural appropriation.
Edit: Way to go, you made it even worse to choose only ONE month of sales instead of a continual portion of the proceeds to be donated.
HARD PASS
drop bad, no eu proxy
anyone complaining about someone donating money needs to shut the hell up
Hold up, there is an exclusivity on the Katakana molds that were created for Masterpiece? :(

So you feel that it is ok to milk Asian/weeb culture because it sells very well in this community, disassociate it, and tack on donations to a charity/movement unrelated to the theme to get brownie points?
This community blows my mind constantly for all the stupidity that it brings up.
Hold up, there is an exclusivity on the Katakana molds that were created for Masterpiece? :(
Didn’t a few businesses/entities/designers or whatever put some money in up front for the cost of the molds, so the mold cost wasn’t transmitted to the cost of the kits in group buy? And that’s how masterpiece was 130$ base with enough new molds I thought it woulda been 160? I presume then the molds would be theirs to run back with different colorways.
Hold up, there is an exclusivity on the Katakana molds that were created for Masterpiece? :(

Yes. Because the maker of GMK Masterpiece paid for those molds by himself. Thus he owns these molds and not GMK.
Astute observation that nobody was questioning.Hold up, there is an exclusivity on the Katakana molds that were created for Masterpiece? :(

He owns the molds that he paid to be made, he does not own katakana
I found this funny too. Isn't Japan known to be lowkey racist towards African Americans/foreigners in general? No ill will towards the set, looks very cool and any support is good. Fist rama wouldn't be a bad idea to help drive home the BLM support.Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/gfo2ABV.jpg)

Same. I appreciate the cause as a black person.. but the set has nothing to do with it. That bothers me for some reason. Nothing about this set says anything about black history, black lives matter etc. Its a great looking set, but for me .. i don't see the connection

Jesus Christ, Guys. This is not that difficult.
This guy has a cool keycap idea he wants to sell. So he teams up with drop to bring the idea to life.
Such said dude also would like to donate some money to BLM in light of things that are happening in the country.
Period. That's it.
There is not supposed to be a connection. This dude is just randomly trying to be a good person and donate some money and you have people complaining that putting white lettering on a black keycap doesn't do anything for BLM.
You seriously need to re-evaluate what you are trying to accomplish with this. I'm all for supporting the movement of BLM but this is a sad take of 100% cultural appropriation.
2) share cost with GMK which in turn makes it public (and allows anyone to use the molds, IE: the Zhuyin molds)

Yeah this is what I thought happened, but people seem to have ignored what I wrote in my follow up to iovercallhistiocytes.
For people saying Energies doesn't own Katakana itself, well no **** I was aware of at that, I didn't register on GH in 2020 lmao.
Pachriksu - you and Drop are going to make some good money off a continuously rolling WOB set, I'd strongly suggest reworking the molds and delay rushing this out.

Let me tell you why I don't like Drop.
GMK is made in Germany, which is inside the EU.
Then all the kits that are made in Germany go to America.
The kits that have been made in the EU start shipping from America to EU customers.
Which leaves EU customers like my sad because we have to pay extra VAT and Handling fees which makes keysets extra expensive and not worth buying.
It also makes unnecessary trips around the world which is not good for the environment.
Would be very nice if Drop made friends with an EU company so they can ship EU stuff from EU to EU.
Same reason I dont support MiTo sets, he does drop only.
Which leaves EU customers like my sad because we have to pay extra VAT and Handling fees which makes keysets extra expensive and not worth buying.Huh, you pay VAT twice or something? Why, when and to who?
Yes! You hit it right on the nail, I do like the support and all support for the cause is appreciated, but personally I don't think the set gives a message nor does it explain the reasoning behind the BLM. Money is nice and all, but it doesn't tell the stories of those wrongfully killed or imprisoned just because the color of their skin. I am also kind of against this because not just you but every ad I see seems to be "supporting" BLM, even though years in the past they kept quiet. Personally to me I would like to see something like this not just be about the money and where it goes but the story that it tell, not just a set with Japanese legends. If you feel you aren't capable to tell the story there is google and a whole tons of site to start learning black history so the truth isn't hidden you just have to find it. https://www.tulsahistory.org/exhibit/1921-tulsa-race-massacre/ here is a start.Show Image(https://i.imgur.com/gfo2ABV.jpg)

This might go against the popular opinion, but I don't even mind Drop as a vendor for EU.
Sure, shipping this set from EU to the US and back might not be environmentally friendly but at least cost-wise it's not that bad:
Assuming a price of theoretical price of $110 and shipping costs of $5:
$115 ≈ 95€
+ 18€ (19% VAT)
+ 6€ Fee
equals to a total of 119€.
Assuming this set ships after 01.07.2021 (new EU VAT rules) I also won't have to pay the 6€ fee, reducing the theoretical price to 113€.
Assuming I use my Drop Rewards Points this further reduces the price to ~107€.
[...]The fees are 33 euros in my country, instead of 6.
My sincere apologies to keep this derailing debacle going, but I'm a bit confused. Is this a keyset interest check or some kind of social justice karma check?I think its easier for you to feel this way if you're not being directly impacted. I love the support, but money doesn't do anything it helps continue, but education go much farther, and this could be used as a way to spread an actual message be honest would you ever actively look up this stuff if someone doesn't throw it in your face. With the White-washing of history and systematic oppression of many minorities if I am being honest no from my black perspective the money isn't enough, if you really wanna help teach a lesson open more people eyes to the truth. Cause the bigger issue is people don't have to notice it, so its easy to ignore the issue and say you're not the problem. Second He could've easy asked people for a black perspective I feel like if he did most would've given him a similar response. Also I am not gatekeeping I didn't say don't do this and I would still support the set I just want it to go further. If you feel you aren't capable to tell the story there is google and a whole tons of site to start learning black history so the truth isn't hidden you just have to find it. https://www.tulsahistory.org/exhibit/1921-tulsa-race-massacre/ here is a start.Exactly, so why does Pachriksu have to retread ground, when numerous others have done it so well? What do you guys want? To bin the racist moon runes, make it black on yellow, rename it GMK BLM, slap on some BLM themed novelties, RAMA cap, deskmat, and give a heartfelt essay on how OP and his family has been deeply hurt by institutional racism; would you let it pass then, gatekeepers?
Hey we even got the good 'ol "should've donated more" with how Pachriksu should donate all profits forever. It's a damn shame that the only solution here is for Pachriksu to not donate to BLM, but I know he won't because he actually cares.

Please don't make the numpad part of the base kit. There's a big reason modern kits separate the numpad. Hardly anyone uses them.

No worries! The community molds have been in development for over 6 months now by MiTo, and details of this set have been planned months in advance to this IC. The molds are also used on GMK Mecha-01, which already went through GB. I'm confident that they'll be perfect :)

I think its easier for you to feel this way if you're not being directly impacted.Naturally I would feel differently, but that doesn't mean I'd act on it. As a cynic I don't let my thought and feelings dictate how I act; but this isn't about me.
Wow -
There's a whole bunch of different opinions and comments, and I did not expect this to happen. Let me clear things up a bit. If you still think this is bad and hate the idea of me donating funds to a cause I want to support, then feel free to keep that opinion and not support the set, but please refrain from commenting on this thread any more. I believe the point has been made by others.
First, I did not "base" this set on the BLM movement. I'm sorry if I didn't make that clear; I thought people might have guessed that BLM was not a basis for inspiration to this Japanese-themed set, but I was wrong. I never had the intention of offending anyone because of the apparent theme of the set. I approached MiTo shortly after the incident of the first IC on the proprietary molds, and he offered to help me get the set back on track with his new community molds (and ideas, renders, etc). We agreed on the idea of having all the designer profits donated to the BLM cause (a few months ago, when the movement exploded in America because of George Floyd, etc. but I don't want to get political right now), and back then I thought it was a great idea. Make a nice-looking set, and help out the community around me at a time when they needed it most.
Back then, the group buy was only scheduled to last a month. Then (a few days ago) came Drop with their (new) great system of ongoing preorders. I realized then that I had a lot more options of not only donating to just one relevant cause that I love and support and stop after the GB ended; I could donate to many other causes that I love and support if I ever wanted to. I don't plan on just running a charity for one month and then keeping every cent of profit for myself after that. That seems like a really cheap move.
Hopefully this clears some things up. Let's keep this thread a place for discussing keycaps, not a place to flame me on a charity choice.
I only want to say that this set being wob could have correct Japanese Katakana locations and the 20 other legends it would take to make a correct JIS set. Easily.

What irks me is the discrimination (in the sense that we treat something differently based on what it is) between different charities. The difference between this set and Ivory is that Ivory has novelties, artisan and a cable. That's it. There's nothing about educating the world about the impeding extincion of elephants, but there was no uproar to be found there. Why? Because we tolerate injustice that doesn't directly affect us. Ironic.

Removing the squared Esc icon in favor of a white accent ⎋ is a welcome change.
Nevertheless, please consider some of the follow suggestions:
- Re-add the second R4 1u ⎇ — These are needed to populate a true HHKB/Tsangan bottom row.
- Re-center the R3 ⌃ — IMHO this looks very odd raised.
- Re-add the R4 1u ≡ and remove the ♦ — ≡ is usually used as an icon for Fn/Menu, this would make it coherent with the other 1.25 ≡ you used.
- Consider using R4 1.5u ♢⌘ instead of ♢ — IMHO this makes the 1.5u keys look less "empty"; molds for these were made for GMK Burgundy (https://i.imgur.com/68S2NxZ.png).

I’ve been a bit busy recently so I haven’t been following this properly, and I still haven’t had a chance to sit down and analyse this set fully, so apologies if I’m missing something obvious. But as far as I can tell, this set contains the R1 ー、R3 ム、and R4 ロ required for correct Japanese Katakana locations. Are there any I’ve missed?
Apart from katakana key placement, what are the 20 other legends needed to make a correct JIS set? Obviously the JIS-only “modifier” keys like 半角/全角、無変換、変換、ひらがな/カタカナ、 and the Mac-specific 英数/かな keys would all be nice, as well as a 4.5U space bar. Are these the keys you meant? That’s only 6 legends, and I happen to know of a certain other set (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=108328.0;topicseen) that will be supplying these in a white-on-black colourway (not that I wouldn’t be thrilled to see them included here as well, of course!)
I feel like I must be missing something, because I can’t see anything wrong with this set from a JIS point of view, other than the missing mods. It is late and I’m sleepy, though, so maybe I’ve overlooked something obvious.

The updated base kit looks really good, so GJ Pachriksu for listening to feedback.
I agree with suggestions #1–3 from the quoted post (and highly disagree with #4). However, as far as #3 goes, I would keep both ≡ and ♦ in the kit since having a generic R4 1u key is useful for a variety layouts (60%, 65%, 40% ortho — which, by the way, is currently supported). If there is one key that I would consider removing, it's the 1u ⇧, since it's only really useful for 60% w/ arrows (GK64) and 40% ortho. But it's okay if that stays as well, although I wouldn't prioritize it (e.g. the second ⎇ is a lot more important than 1u ⇧).
As far as the ♦ goes, one thing I would consider doing is replacing it with a >_ icon (examples: 1 (https://i.imgur.com/5ZVAEFn.png) 2 (https://i.imgur.com/1GrBIyD.jpg) 3 (https://i.imgur.com/vKmSdAo.png)). I think this icon would fit in better with the remaining icons, seeing as all of them are outlined and ♦ is the only one that's filled.
If you want, you can use ÷, × instead of /, * on the numpad; some people prefer those legends for aesthetics. I think that they would work well with this numpad because they're a bit more visually balanced than /, *.
One final thing to consider is including the following keys for minimal staggered 40% support:This would allow the base kit to cover the majority of popular 40s boards out there (standard 12u, standard 13u, Van derivatives etc.), which is why the 40% community has recently started recommending including these 3 keys in base as a good alternative for sets that don't want to run a dedicated 40% kit.
- R2 1.75u ⭠
- R3 1.25u ⭾
- R3 1.5u ⮠
Together with the already existing ortho support, adding these keys would indeed mean that the set would have physical support for all of the most popular 40% boards overall.
Edit: correction
Jesus the level of drama on this forum lately is just ridiculous.A small minority of people on Geekhack feed off of starting and fueling drama. It's a sad state of this forum these days.
The man decides to do something nice and put profits to charity for a month, and he gets crucified for the set not having to do anything with the cause? and it not being enough..?
It's money being given to charity out of something that came from his work/effort. No one is required to do that, but he decided to. It's quite admirable, I know very few people that would do that, and it's just plain sad to see someone get **** for it.
You guys seriously need to chill.

Outside of that, I love that this is being made. Simple, clean, and hella elegant. It kind of helps fill the gap in which GMK Masterpiece and Modern/Simple JA reside. Will certainly cop a set when it drops!
Why not a spacebar kit? Could move the minibars there + some of the other usual suspects and a 6u; oh and a couple of 3u's which seem to be on the rise. Maybe a bit late for that now, but I think it could be neat for anyone looking for black spacebars.Having only 1 kit will make things much easier when having an ongoing pre-order. I might consider splitting kits in the future, if that ever allows.
