As you know, the geekhack-maintained list of currently running Group Buys has been out of date for quite some time.  Thankfully, other community members have stepped up to create alternate resources for tracking Group Buys, some of which are linked below in no particular orderPlease note that these sites are not affiliated with geekhack in anyway - they are linked here solely for the benefit of the community.  That said, THANK YOU to the creators and all that help maintain the resources.  :thumb:

--> MechGroupBuys <--
--> KeycapLendar <--by eskimojo
--> KeyCapSets <--by noudadrichem and Quadeppo/Ryan
--> SLeeKeyboards <--(no updates after 2020)

And as always, we must remind users that all purchases made in the Group Buy format come with a hefty dose of risk, inherent to the process.  Remember...
CAVEAT EMPTOR

Please feel free to continue using this thread to discuss GBs, offer feedback, and to chime in if anything happens to the site linked above (I will not be checking in regularly to verify it's still up).  :)

If you notice that a group buy that is still open for orders is missing from this list, please add it in your reply to this thread.  It will be reviewed and added to the list.  After your recommendation is added to the list, your post will be removed to keep this a brief one-page summary.

'sounds good to me. We'll post a bump when the list is updated. :thumb:

Note to others editing this list: please delete the old bump before posting the new bump to keep things orderly.

Yet another hidden gem on intelli78's blog Keychatter, he's got this really cool GB tracker. Might be a nice complement to this thread :)

There are GB that are not taking orders anymore; because, they are in the fulfilling phase already. These links are not too useful for those looking for opportunities to get new things, that make most of the visitors to this thread; therefore, it would be good to remove them from the list, or place them into a category that informs that the GBs are not taking orders anymore. Having them along with the GB that are actively taking orders reduce the usefulness of this thread; people interested have to navigate to the reference just to find that the GB orders have been closed.

I don't think it's an issue. It's not a long list, and new stuff is shown by the tag. Maybe more tags for 'taking orders' or 'invoicing' or 'shipping'? I don't think it's an issue for them to still be in the list.

Exactly: is not an issue; but, it could be an useful future to have the GBs classified, or with the tag added, that sounds great as well.

Thanks for pointing that out. :thumb: I've pruned the list of GBs that aren't taking orders.  Not sure if we'll add tags for invoicing and shipping since we want to keep this just for the GBs that are taking orders.  Should we add the ordering end dates though?

Keep it as simple as possible. You do more than enough by keeping this thread updated, already. Thank you very much.

End dates could be added at the time the link is registered in the list, and it will be required only once. But, of course, it is up to you. Again, we appreciate the hard work you are already doing in the benefit of the community.

Hi there infiniti and photoelectric and anyone else who updates this.

I use this program to update my Interest Check Tracker.

CPTBadAss suggested that you might find it useful. If you can't understand my hastily written documentation, just shoot me a PM.

This thread is useless.  Delete it.  I've missed two group buys by wasting my time checking this.

You might want to consider setting the Group Buy subforum to "Notify", in order to be made aware of any and all group buy threads that are created.

Or perhaps take all the time you've wasted reading this single thread and scan the subforum for new group buys instead.

Pardon the delay but UPDATED!

Anyway, we're experimenting with a new section: OTHER OFF-SITE GROUP BUYS AND PRE-ORDERS.  This is for group buys and pre-orders that do not have a dedicated thread on GeekHack and do not come from a Vendor.  It's meant just to make the list more exhaustive to avoid the risk of missing out. :p

Let me know what you think. :cool:

Updated with all non-vendor & vendor buys + pictures :)

I have my own spreadsheet I'm going to be keeping updated with all buys ran through GH (that have been active since today onwards). I'll keep posting new ones here too? ;D

Wow, thanks!  :thumb:

If you're keeping a spreadsheet on your own anyway, maybe I could add a link to it in the OP assuming it's Google Sheets?  That way all your updates will be visible right away.

Not going to go through every page and collect info, so it'll just be any that get bumped ;D

P.S. The Lets Split case is repeated in the OP.

I suggest to delete the content in the OP and let the spreadsheet be the single source for reference. The huge work it takes is well appreciated and there is no need to invest any additional effort editing the text of the post here.

Or is the new 'rule' just post new gb's here?

Yeah I honestly don't understand why this is here if it isn't going to be updated. Don't get me wrong, this would be pretty awesome to have as a reference for group-buys in the works though!

It takes a lot of work, and people were variously volunteering to do it in the past.  No one is currently, although if someone is going to volunteer their time, that's great.  Otherwise, it will stay for posterity's sake, and drift down the history.  As it was until someone posted to it again.

Why not using a standard formating for GB and make a hook to parse all the posts in this section? It would be usefull for everyone. I can do a POC for this if needed.

Issue would be updating the status.  Not sure how often folks are updating their post titles to say 'open' 'closed', etc.

Sure but by making this we may have to force a format for posts to be properly parsed.

It would be in a [GB] thread starter's best interest to do whatever it takes to add their [GB] to this list.  Or if access is an issue, maybe it could be part of the moderator's approval process...

My tip: I do an advanced search on all posts by the mod user "Signature" with the word "approved". It's not foolproof though. E.g. he didn't actually approve the Metropolis GB

If he did consistently "approved" all GBs, then perhaps there'd be a way of pinning the search. Bit hacky, admittedly

It might just be easier to make a Reddit dedicated to group buys and interest checks and just use their flair system for easy filtering, even if the only purpose of a post there is to link to a group buy page I think it would be significantly easier for people to navigate. This would also be way easier for gb hosts to manage than a forced format

if this would be a serious format why don't you just have any GB added to that repo via json?

pull request on groupbuys.json and have a historical snapshot of all group buys that can be used in any sort of system:

Code: [Select]
[
{
"name": "My Group By",
"author": "somename",
"start": "20190506", // or actual ts but this might be easier
"end": "20190606",

"contact": {
"discord": "https://discord.gg/123",
"reddit": "redditusername",
"geekhack": "geekhackusername",
"email": "support@email.com"
}
}
]

just add another object to the array and do a pull request. done. free database of all current and past group buys ;)

any time format is going to be preferential unless you just go with ISO UTC standard, i. e. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ISO_8601

And to that, it would be good to have the time also.  I do like the fact of talking about it from a data-centric standpoint where the data is stored in a specified format at a specified location, however.

I agree with you. About the format i'm french and i've adopted the US format because most of the format and ressources on keebs community are US. But yes using ISO is good too.

Using PR on a github repo is a problem because not all of us are developers or even git afficionados that's why i haven't purpose this. It would be definitely easier! About your model homerowco i agree with it, but we have to make a tool to generate this unless people wont use it.

Separate the tools from the data.  Just concentrate on the data format, and having it in the same place.  That's the problem that we have now- the data is tied into the tools (various online platforms).  Having them in one place that's easy to access and consistent should be the MVP of any project like this, or else you're just creating an N+1th standard (relevant https://xkcd.com/927/)

mmmm right. About what homerowco purposed i'm a bit concerned with the data format. For the rest it's LGTM for me.

Storing it as a JSON file in GitHub and give people the snippet to parse it as JSON using curl or whatever is a good start so. Maybe i can write a cli to write this file easily for the beginning.

Why concerned?  It's just data.  And just store it as JSON.  The part about the pull request is just to add a piece of data, right?  Not getting where that's any difference?  Just arriving at a standard accepted format, which is just details.

Used to have some issues with international apps manipulating dates. But if we use ISO it's not a problem so.

PR part is to add data. I'll update the git so.

@zekth I had an idea - perhaps add a JavaScript file that reads the latest JSON data and converts it to RSS format. Then a build script could generate the rss file. Or maybe use a git wiki page to render the json

About your model homerowco i agree with it, but we have to make a tool to generate this unless people wont use it.

git has a in place editor... just need an account and a 3 step instruction or a simple video.

sign up > edit file > commit & create pull request

done :)

Just arriving at a standard accepted format, which is just details.

youre doing pull requests, you can always just change whats submitted.

give an example url where to pull data like https://www.unixtimestamp.com

dont worry too much, just get it running ;)

register a company github.com/mechmarketdata/groupbuys and add me: homerowco and we get it going... 99% of getting something built is doing the first step :D
Used to have some issues with international apps manipulating dates. But if we use ISO it's not a problem so.

PR part is to add data. I'll update the git so.

Updated the repository and the format. https://github.com/keebdata/groupbuys
Will do a bunch of examples for parsing it in different languages

Great idea.  The git model maps to this really well.

As for tooling to consume the data, my 2 cents would be to keep that in a separate repo.  Then it serves the purpose of a reference implementation separate from the data and management thereof.   Anyone who wants to display the data on their own site can refer to the same tooling.

Salty much?  If you're going to develop something for the community to be used universally by the community, you have to learn that it's not all going to be rah rah.  I like the idea of the unix timestamp, but seeing that it has a finite end date is a definite con that should be brought up.  Just sorry that I wasn't the one that brought it up- probably for that reason.  People ask for input, but when it's to point out a flaw many don't take it well.

No salty at all, not rah rah.

The problem with unix TS is it can't be validated by a Json Schema. Adding a piece of custom code is not really in the mind of the project IMO. That's why the datetime ISO string has stayed in the model.
https://json-schema.org/understanding-json-schema/reference/string.html#format

I agree that with unix TS we would not have to handle the timezone problem. If a UI to generate the json file will be available i think we can switch to unix TS. Some people asked me in PM about it, that's why i provided the Usage section

Instead of a Unix timestamp that looks and feels like magic string (requiring a ui), why not just go with an ISO-8601 datetime format? Any merge could be blocked on the format not properly translating.

I second the ISO-8601 format.  I vote for this version:
       20190519T013758Z
       yyyymmddThhmmssZ (Z = Zulu = UTC)

I guess, more to the point, I don't see where unix timestamps give that much of an advantage over ISO that you'd build technical debt into the spec.

+1 for "YYYY-MM-DD HH:mm:ss" :p

If nothing else, this should be at least somewhat accessible to non-programmer GB runners. Has any thought been given to what a hypothetical UX/UI would be like?

Problem for those formats is the validation of the Json Schema. Sorry for late update i was kinda busy those times and didn't checked this out.

About the UX, i think just a form generating the proper formated json is good enought IMO. Like a single page app hosted on GH page.

NOTE: starting a POC project for this.

I think that the point of it is that the UX can be anything that you want it to be.  Separate the data from the presentation and let people cook up what they will with a solid foundation.

Here is just a POC: https://keebdata.github.io/form/
ATM there is a lack of validations on the form, need to be updated. Also i've found some issues in the json-schema. I'll fix that soon.

the repo: https://github.com/keebdata/form
Any PR is welcome as i'm not a UX designer / developer. I prefer boring backend stuff.

Anyway seems like it will not be possible atm. I'd suggest to just add the status of the GB in the name of the topic like some does but not everyone like:
  • [GB] [ON] Awesome ISO 60%
  • [GB] [OFF] Awesome ISO 60%
  • [GB] [PROD] Awesome ISO 60%
  • [GB] [SHIP] Awesome ISO 60%
  • [GB] [END] Awesome ISO 60%

Then it will be easier to find the status instead of parsing all the posts. Your thougths?

I think a *good* solution might be to do as you've said (specify the format so it's easy to interpret at first glance), and standardize an "Information Header" at the top of each post to list status, dates, etc.

Then it would be great to also parse the data (that part is not too complicated, right?  I am not experienced at this, but my understanding is that it is not a crazy hurdle to overcome) and simply update this thread daily or every other day with the information.

Am I correct in understanding that one of main troubles you've come across is setting up the website side of things?  If the data is easy to parse and gather, I'd be more than happy to update the post in this thread with the relevant data.  The main issue in the past is that the process was entirely manual and an incredible burden for whoever was going to update it.

Regardless, I support the efforts to standardize and make this easier to understand!  There are far too many GBs now to expect users to keep up to date with all of them.  :thumb:  Let me know how the mod team can support these efforts.  :)

Not at all, the main problem is the agreement of people using the standard and make communities contribute to it. Like i said people seems not really into this because you need to update another data source.

TBH: Once the standard is up, it's like 2 days of work to make the platform up for me. It's not a complicated project, but it needs contribution to work. It's like being a book printer without having books to print, you got the tools but not the pdf files to print.

That's why i came up with the status of the GB in the title. Why only the status? Because it doesn't require so much effort and it will be easier for everyone (me the first) to see which GB is running at the moment. It's a moderation addition but a good user feature IMO.

Care to link?  Wouldn't hurt to throw some other GB tracking sites up there too.

I recently launched KeycapLendar, based on the spreadsheet of the same name.  :D

There's also keycapsets.com, created by noudadrichem and Quadeppo/Ryan.  ;)

I'm not sure how maintained it is, but SLeeKeyboards was also around for a while.

If you are asking about the four website links in the OP, those are not stores.  They are tracking keycap group buys to help people see everything currently running, coming in the future, and sometimes those that have already finished.  Some also track interest checks, some track keyboard GBs in addition to keycap GBs.  When they have links to vendors, it's typically all the vendors participating in that group buy.

As indicated in the OP, the Geekhack list is out of date and essentially decommissioned. It instead links to alternate resources. If you want your GB to be added to one of the sites listed, then you'll have more luck contacting the creator of the site directly. (Though I wouldn't bother with SLeeKeyboards, as it doesn't seem to have been updated since around June)

(In the cases of both of your GBs, keyboard GBs would not be tracked on KeycapLendar or keycapsets, for example.

Here is info about making group buy threads - https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=88717.0

There are no prerequisites for making an IC thread.  But before starting a GB thread, a "minimum forum membership duration of 2 months + post count of 25" are required.

I'd like to unofficially point out that it seems https://sleekeyboards.com/ is no longer being updated as of last year. There are no 2021 Group Buys listed on the site.

Their links to social media also seem to be broken.

mechgroupbuys is not actively updated anymore. The updates there are few and between.

fortunately keycaplendar is still actively being maintained
