Is this the latest version of this (http://imgur.com/a/2T58B) case, or an entirely different one? I was really looking forward to purchasing the exact one I linked.
I'm pretty sure this GB is for the final form of the case you linked. If you check the IC for this case, it shows one of the pictures from your link under the 'V1' header.
I don't know the background, but in the IC thread Yuktsi shows interest in the V1 prototype, and LeandreN says "Trust me, you dont want the first prototype :)". I don't know if that's a quality issue (it being a prototype, maybe it was rough), or a design issue, but it doesn't look like V1 is going to be available.
I also really liked V1, but V2 sure is nice, too.
Sorry to disappoint. (And a huge apology if I've gotten any of this wrong.)

Is this compatible with custom 60% Alps PCBs?
Yeah, it is. The majority of Alps PCBs have standard mounting based on the poker design. The only ones that don't that I know of are the Duck Mini v2 and Duck Eagle/Viper v1 PCB.That said, even with the exceptions listed, they still share enough mounting points to be compatible.
Odds are you won't just have an Eagle or Mini v2 PCB around to use with a case, but that's the 411 for ya.

When you say "really blue" are we talking "M65-A Hydro Blue" or something darker?We are talking real blue, not cyan. So a dark blue that might be similar to hydro.

Yeah maybe it should go back to it's essential roots and appeal only to the fanatics, since they are the ones to encourage new developments and quality keyboards.
The 50 that are picked by the OP will be in a league of their own, they will no longer reside at the bottom of the Geekhack food-chain but hover way above all of us mortals who dream about owning something unique as this.

This case is what 60% Perfection is all about. Going for anything else is like going for second best, so why deny yourself this opportunity to own something that will catapult a plain 60 percent keyboard into super stardom, when it's sheaved into this casing?

The T60 will be fantastic. It's simple and clean.
However, this is a completely different product though, the design is very different.
This case also has a lot, included an amount of shipping cost embedded into the price.
T60 is an alternative, not a replacement, so if you like it better, feel free to buy it. It's probably going to be a great quality product.

I notice, with my Orion v2, now using carbon fiber for the plate material, but with stainless steel as well, that you can feel the energy of the bottoming out being transferred through the plate. Like I can feel vibrations in my left hand through the keys when I'm using my right for typing and vise versa.
With the tray-mounted version, the case pretty much deadens all that, especially if you use something like a shelf liner mat or sorbothane.
I haven't dampened my Orion though, mainly because Alps SKCM Blue would become pretty muted. I'm sure if there was pressure beneath the PCB, it would deaden those vibrations.
It's actually something I've seen a lot of vintage top-mounted Alps boards do. There's usually some kind of dampening device in between the PCB and case supporting it. Usually some kind of rubber pad.
It does kind of feel nice though. :P
With tray-mounted, it feels like you're typing on a brick, haha. Which can be good for certain things, like linears. Very solid feel there.

Being that I want to use SKCM Browns with this case, I'm not sure. Tray-mounted, imo, is obviously the more solid option because of the PCB being screwed into the bottom like that. You could argue that the plate itself isn't mounted at all... Hmmm. Still, the PCB has tons of support and contact points.
I just don't want the tactility to be too harsh, but I think it'll be fine. I like the springiness on the Orion v2 though.
I think the seamlessness of a one-piece style is more attractive, but I'll keep a look out for the two piece top mounted design too

Not done yet, I am thinking I'll be done in a week or two. I hope you get a chance. I am looking at a few factories, and I am going to order from the one that will give me the highest quality. The samples I have got has a few quirks I am not so happy with, but I think I am on the right track

I'm trying I'm trying, I jumped on a set of PuLSE off of MM and snagged a set of Hyperfuse SA. So I'm hoping the blue would go nicely with the PuLSE. If not I will have to play around with the hyperfuse, which I'm not even going to be sad about. HahaOh my god. Those FJELLs look beautiful. If the purple and orange is already making me question my choice. I'm anticipating the day the blue shows it's head.

Oh I see now that that's a giant slab of a palm rest, so it's taller than I thought, but you really can't get past that without affecting angle. It'll be nice either way. :3

As said before, working with a couple different factories, in the picture you can see a 7075 aluminium sample. I am not entirely pleased yet, so I will keep going after CNY with some other places that I know of. I will update you here.
So are the cases going to be milled out of 7075? I remember early on that you said you'd use 6061.
I am just testing both, we are still in the prototyping stage. I haven't invoiced anyone yet, and won't do it before I have a clear plan for every material, and the factory we will use.

We are still in the prototyping stage. I am testing 7075 and 6061 alloy aluminium, we will probably stick to 6061.
I am also looking at some different machining places, as I wasn't 100% happy with the last samples.
I will take my time before you are invoiced to assure that it will be a good end product. Nothing is yet confirmed.

Doesn't matter really, since you can always buy that particular screwdriver off Flebay or visit your local Bricks and Mortar outfit.

I think there's two trains of though on bright colorful cases. The one from Bunny accents the Hyperfuse really nicely and isn't supposed to take the spotlight. But if you put a more "plain" keyset on it, the case will take the attention. Just depends which one you're trying to accent.

It's weird, really. I think if a keyset is too bland on something that has striking color, then the overall aesthetic becomes too unbalanced. On the other hand, I think that a keyset that blends too much with the case can also not be dynamic enough.
For some reason, these colors worked so well on my Hammer Alps build:

I never would've thought blues would work like that against red, but they did and then the LEDs brought it all together. I guess sharing the colorway with the Realforce 10AE set is a plus.

Elrick pls, you were first and though I too lost out hard core on getting in on this awesome as heck board, it would ONLY be right for those that spoke up first (and the rest of us that lost) that should be given their FAIR chance.
When it comes to this FJELL casing all human rights and morals disappear out the window because certain individuals here would do anything for this 8) .
In a just and decent world people like this would get what they want but alas we live in this perverted, insane reality called Geekhack, which all whom dwell here hope to grab something of significance before slipping down into the bowels of the earth for one last time.
Those who want this keyboard need to be locked in a dark room with knives and only one can walk out alive, with an FJELL casing to their name :thumb: .

What are the differences between one sample and the previous?
Minor improvments, like USB hole, screw holes and other stuff that needs to work 100% perfect with all PCBs.

I never enter raffles to begin with, but I've never won any giveaways and the one time I entered a brocaps raffle when I was new and actually cared, I didn't make it.
So yeah. Lack of data for that question.
I don't think there will be any super noticeable machining marks.

A raffle would certainly be more fair. If it's first come first serve for extras, then that gives a bit of an unfair advantage compared to how the slots were initially sorted out.

Wished I was there for the raffle. Those that never reply probably people that make multiple accounts just to have higher chance to win the raffle. I was looking back at various $200+ keyboard housing group buys, doubt that it ever reaches 500+ users on a single group buy on FCFS.

Were those of us that lost the R1 raffle supposed to be on a mailing list of some sort? I never got an email and I fear I might not have made it on this list and missed out. I'm still really interested in an FJELL but not gonna lie hearing R2 is gonna be a raffle too possibly is pretty disheartening, especially after this has been hyped so much over the last few months and interest from the R1 raffle seems to really have increased.
Good question. I lost the R1 raffle and was interested in picking up extras (and of course R2), but I didn't see an email when the emails went out, so I assumed they just went to waitlist folks who were picked for the extras. Dunno, though.

I went vintage blacks in mine good sir, never been a fan on the gaterons personally but some people swear buy them so I'm sure it'll make a fantastic board for you, this case feels so grounded you would be hard pressed to throw a linear switch in it that wouldn't feel great

I plan on using tactile creams in my board with the Eagle PCB I had previously installed in my FMJ case. Going to get a brass Alps plate made for it. I was going to either use tactile (NeXT) creams or linear creams, but definitely cream. :P

I'll keep watch on that HHKB version! Definitely something I could use for the project I currently have THIS version of the FJELL in mind for. The HHKB version might suit it even better because of the blockers to really go for that look.

Hey! I was actually going to get my plate cut at a local shop. Brass plate of the correct thickness is rather cheap from hobby shops so it's actually not bad at all. I'm not sure if LeandreN was including custom Alps plates, but I had assumed that there would be no possibility for custom orders. D:

Lasergist is generally on the more expensive side of things (at least that I've found). They are very convenient for small runs (single plates or perhaps a couple plates), and they have a lot of available surface finishing options. If cost is of utmost importance, try and find local sheet metal fabs to you, I did a small runs of different sized plates last year at a local company, and the costs came down to about 15 quid per 60% sized plate and a bit more for TKL sized (shipping not withstanding), so that's like 20 dollars per or thereabouts.

Stoked for either sir, at the end of the day it's a plate so will be near impossible to polish once built, whatever finish you choose it'll tarnish and patina beautifully right away and be all the better for it

It will probably be limited too, but we will allow a larger number of people in. I want everyone to get one, but making sure we are capable to deliver in a timely manner is just as important.
If I had opened for 200+ orders in the first round, maybe we couldn't deliver before December because it's the first round. The first round needs a lot of attention to details etc.

All I can say that we are close to getting the shipment here. I hope everything went well on the long freight-time, and I can't wait to share some pictures.
I am working on automating customs forms, however, there are still parts that will need to be filled out manually.
I will invoice the rest of the case once I have checked the cases, and done my own QC.

I am waiting for some ink cartridges for my printers which both emptied themselves at the same time of course.
It will take a couple more days and I will start to send out a few packages a day and then escalating.
I don't think any of you have filled the custom labels from here before, but if you do, you know it's a pain. I was able to automate about 50% by filling the customs labels, but there are still a lot of manual handwriting-required parts of the forms. I hope you can understand that this is going to be a pain until my company is up and running so I will have DHL or another express service with a decent API so I don't have to write my own macros in Word to be able to do 50% of the labour automatically.

Alps is a scary world to jump into if you know how vast it is. Most people assume there aren't many options, but that's the opposite of the truth.
Alps' spherical sets are some of the hardest to get a hold of, but there are a few out there, usually coming from very obscure keyboards. The most common set you can find is the one off of the Canon AP and SC series typewriters.

The colorway is rather ugly though, but there are some sets with a more grey tone that look pretty good.

Is what I plan to put on the FJELL. It comes from two IBM Multistation key cap sets, one Chinese market, one Japanese.

Now, once everyone has their orders in the next week/ two weeks, I will start working on replacing/refunding and supporting the product until we have settled.
When that is done, I will start working on Round 2 FJELL, and also start working on a simple case buy. I have not decided whether I want to keep them together or splitting.

There are behind the scenes work that has been done to assure the best cases for everyone. Even though I'm not in this R1 buy, would still like to see a writeup/portmortem if you feel like writing one, should be an interesting read.
As far as future buys go, I think you should run one after the other, not at the same time, to minimise the assault on people's wallets (no doubt some would appreciate being able to get in on both GBs and having them runs at the same time means some sort of picking and choosing has to be done :p )

From the Mountain, to the FJELL, to a future projects thread and fulfilling all your orders here, I do remember when this started as just a concept. It'd be nice to see what you have to say about it, especially since I think it was your first time getting into designing and producing a keyboard case. It all went very smoothly, but I bet all your experience from running several GBs in the past helped that greatly.

Thanks for all your patience, the splitting of the order shipments over a period of time has a reason. Actually, I want to do a write-up of my group buy experience since I realized there is obviously a lot of stuff you don't know. There are behind the scenes work that has been done to assure the best cases for everyone. Like, no one's spot was never pushed over in round 2 adding a lot more waiting times, even though some people like to think so...
If you are interested in such a write-up, let me know :) In the end, you will get your product/have got your product within a reasonable amount of time, in my opinion.
Still, there will be some that will recieve faulty cases, I have clearly stated that you should simply fill this (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSflknk_H_VRPjB-N78QG7mQqn-NXUoTM9NoHpveUc_lG_HQUQ/viewform?usp=sf_link)form, and I will take a look at it within a reasonable amount of time. I have made multiple plans to make sure everyone is happy with their products. Like deals with the manufacturer, pre-shipped replacements, aftershipped replacements++
Now, once everyone has their orders in the next week/ two weeks, I will start working on replacing/refunding and supporting the product until we have settled.
When that is done, I will start working on Round 2 FJELL, and also start working on a simple case buy. I have not decided whether I want to keep them together or splitting.

Totally interested in a write up, LeandreN. FWIW, that could also double as a bible for future GB runners. Having tried multiple high quality 60% cases, I have to say... This honestly does take the cake, and it actually sounds fantastic without ANY dampening. Even the venerable Hammer needed some dampening to kill the some metallic case acoustics.

Thanks man! I really love the FJELL. Together with my Mira, it's in my top two. As far as research into acoustics, I remember telling Leandren how I was very disappointed with the case acoustics of the FMJ design #1 case I had, and he did say that he'd try to make sure this one didn't have much metallic ping.
I think it might have to do with the overall weight, but I have no idea really! It's certainly the heaviest 60% I have. With less vibration in the case, I guess it would probably lessen noticeable ping.

I had a couple questions. I'm new to gh and don't know my way around too well and probably found the wrong thread. But with r2 being discussed I wanted to know what the correct case is angled sides but still standard layout and not the hhkb layout that I see renders for. And what is the price set to be for it for round 2?

Knowing Yuktsi it is potentially a plastic (polycarb or acrylic) plate, which would be awesome. I'm not sure why so few people in North America or Europe like soft, flexible plates but I sure do.

True, I do plan to get a R2, but there is something special (to me) about R1 which I'd be willing to pay extra for, even with blemishes and imperfections. Honestly I don't think I'd be so obsessed if I hadn't been promised a gorgeous R1 and had the seller back out at the very last second. Felt like a knife through my heart. >:D
