[IC] En Dash – Old Meets New

En Dash – Old Meets New

Hey Geeks, I feel like I should introduce myself as this is my first project. I am Would, Australia based graphic designer specialising in type design. I make fonts, and love frying my eyes from staring at a computer screen for too long. Let's get into the business end of this project:

This board is a revival of one of the much loved kustoms - the OTD 360C. Similar aesthetic, build and mounting style but i believe i have changed enough to take it well out of clone territory. While it does draw heavily from the original source I believe that the changes i have made are enough to make it my own. Shifting proportions and updating internals while offering more flexibility in layout. The plate has different mounting points but has all of the Korean flex/consistency cutouts as after all, people do crave the typing experience of a Kustom for a reason. More or less its designed to look and feel like a Kustom that has been given a breath of fresh air. The En Dash is built to fit Hiney's H88 PCB but will not be released with a plate that has as flexible layout choices.

Details

I do already have a prototype in hand. Sadly the quality of the manufacturing left a lot to be desired and I am not comfortable leaving the full run in their hands. I am waiting to hear back on a couple more quotes before i continue with another factory.

Layout: TKL with F13 – Please note this will be available as WKL ONLY to keep things a bit simpler for my sake as a first timer.
Made from Aluminium 6061/6063 (tbd based on final factory) and brass.
Brass will be sandblasted matte and left uncoated to patina – this is my preference when it comes to brass.
H88 Hiney PCB
Prototype has a fixed plate, GB version will have a plate that supports stepped caps, split r-shift and split backspace.
8 degree typing angle
Built weight: 2.5 – 2.8kg
Colours: TBD
Price: TBD
GB DATE: TBD

I feel the need to add this comment from later in the thread here.

Hello my friends. This thread has taken a bit of a different direction to what i had hoped. Thank you to those of you that have discussed the topic of whether or not this is clone with cooler heads, whether you are agree or not.

I would like to take a moment to lay out the differences because i think this project is being looked at in the wrong way. I also don't want to become "the clone guy". Perhaps it's my fault for explaining the origins of the project and made the connection too easy to make for those that can only put one thing in the context of another. Im not saying this design is pushing the boundaries of keyboard design: its a two piece, top mount TKL after all.

Mounting

Its a top mount TKL right? I urge you to take a look at any top mounted board you own. This is one of the more "set in stone" things in design in my opinion especially in a top mount. The way my design differs from the 360C is:
  • extra mounting point to be a bit more consistent across the whole board
  • Different screw placement that prioritises support around alphas and corners

What has this achieved? The prototype feels very good to type on. Flex is consistent and enjoyable. Is it different enough from the 360C? No less than any other top mount TKL in my opinion.

Plate Design
Do keep in ming this is the prototype plate, you'll just have to imagine the layout support. How is this different from the 360C?
  • I'll start with an obvious one: its a different layout. F13 means modified flex cutouts around that top portion
  • The flex cutouts look the same. Yes because they're flex cut outs at every opportunity

Side profile
How many times has this side profile been iterated on?

Does that make every two piece board with a flat back and a straight cut out a clone of the first one? Here is a comparison of 360C to En Dash. I would say the 360C is significantly more angular while the curve of the En Dash is more soft and sweeping.

Weight
Yep, it's a rectangle. Heres how my brick of brass is different:
  • the inside is significantly bigger - Why? more surface area of brass inside to improve acoustics as well as provide a little more heft
  • Mounts from the inside for a hidden assembly

I hope this is enough for you sticklers out there. I only ask that rather than getting stuck on the similarities, you look at the differences. A thin bezelled two piece design will look a certain way especially if it's a revival of an old design. If you think it is still too close you are welcome to not support the project.

29/08/2019
Added some additional specs to the description.

27/08/2019
First prototype is in hand – so why arent we in GB already?
WELL I have had some pretty significant issues with manufacturing quality across every piece of my prototype. I want to make sure i only put out something that lives up to this board's inspiration and my standards of what a high end TKL should be. I will not sacrifice the quality of this product and I am currently getting quotes from a few other factories.

Ask me any questions you may have about the project. I love chatting about design but I would prefer to keep all discussion about this design archived here for everyone to see — I am contactable here or on Discord at would#3131

Would be interested to see pictures of the plate, I'm curious what changes you've made to the mounting points.

What other changes (aside from the F13) did you make to update the internals? Bezels look a little relaxed on the sides, a chamfer instead of fillet?

Found some: https://www.flickr.com/photos/183512946@N03/48549127507/in/dateposted/

Even more curious about the "modernization" of the internals now -- it doesn't seem to have more modern conveniences like alignment tabs for the top/bottom, and has a large gap between the case screws.

The mounting points look like they would stiffen the typing feel rather than modernizing it. They are less evenly spaced than the original (https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2948/15473988795_e3bbacad8b_h.jpg) and there are more of them (8 vs the original 7).

Ahh yes this is the photo i was in the process of linking you.
This is about as much as I'm willing to share for the moment. Mounting points are a little more stable in corners and prioritise the alphas a little more, weight is significantly bigger internally to provide more density, screw sizes are larger for a stronger build. This first prototype is missing a couple of features (such as tabs)

When it comes to breaking down what truly differentiates TKLs i believe my changes throughout the entire design process are enough for the En Dash to stand on it's own. My intentions here are not to make a clone by any means. If you really want to be reductive about the design changes by listing them one by one thats fine, but even the prototype i have in hand feels quite nice to use.

Not trying to be reductive, just looking to know why you made the design decisions you did. Your post talks a big game, and I'm quite interested in the minutae of plate, case, and mounting design  ;)

Also surely you must realize that claiming to base your board on such a high-profile design might incite some skepticism? You're basically aiming as high as you possibly could, with, afaik, not much of an established reputation. My critique and questions are pretty par for the course for someone out of the blue claiming they've improved the Corsa.

Good luck 👍

I mean, the inclusion of the F13 key is already tits, only the Matrix 8XV1.X, DK Saver, & Jane V2 CE (I think those are the only 3 boards) have that in common, and those are big boi boards.

Is that a bad thing when they all look clean af? I'm down for an OTD clone that is actually obtainable lol
If you‘re OK with supporting a lazy GB by someone who doesn’t want to create his own designs and would rather copying someone else’s homework, sure.
I know OP claimed to change the internals. I’m saying that’s not enough “changes”.

Until that someone else's work gets readily and easily accessible to me (or I guess anyone), then yeah, I'm cool supporting someone else 'copying homework'. If the OG designer really wants to stick it me, this designer copying, or anyone else, they should release the product in an equally or more accessible way.

Cool. Oh please wait as I go and make an IC thread for GMK Olivia R2 without checking with the OG designer then. The market demand is HUGE I tell you. HUGE!

You're joking, but you'd be kidding yourself to think that people wouldn't buy the hell out of that if everything was the same as R1 besides the OG designer. We can go back and forth talking about pseudo ethics, but people with the means to do things like copy limit works should do it and shut one of us up with the results. Until then, everything is just banter... but I guess we can find out with the end result from the En-Dash

good strawman, useless addition but ok lol

yea a lot of the TKLs look the same, because they are all pretty much the same given layout and function. there are only so many ways to design a rectangle with the same switch layout, especially when the custom TKL aesthetic has been refined as much as it has been. so many kustom-inspired TKLs looking the same is literally the point of them. as many makers are moving towards lower-quantity runs, having lots of low-quantity TKLs that are relatively similar is better than not having any at all. if you'd prefer to have TKLs that do not look similar, feel free to design them yourself and do your own buys :)

i endorse this, i like seeing new designers making stuff. especially when said stuff uses my PCBs ;)

As mentioned in the main post I'm currently waiting on some quotes from a few more manufacturers. I can't give dates quite yet but will certainly update here when its decided. It's safe to assume there'll be silver and another colour.

I recognize that there is a holy-morality-war and maybe some gatekeeping going on in this thread.... BUT I do agree with the sentiment that, should this board his a lower price point (lower to mid 300s), this board will give many in the community the opportunity to simply consider buying their grail board (or at least a high quality clone).

Keep it simple. Keep it honest. It's a clone, but I think that's actually a good thing. Demand is high, so why not supply?

Nice work OP, I'll be waiting for more info once you hear back from manufacturing.

As long as we call em' like we see em', and are honest about what we, as a community, consider "iteration" and "innovation".

If anything, these similar TKLs will put pressure on designers to chase after the new, next-big-thing or high clout item.

That said, I do recognize the harm in blatant rip-offs. Thankfully, this board (in my opinion) isn't one.

OP, I'm all done feeding into this conversation; had to get my 2c out there -- on with the IC!

If you think it is still too close you are welcome to not support the project.

not to **** on your parade but the side looks exactly the same to me

it's not a clone, it just feels like an uninspired design that isn't super unique

like, the plate mounting is basically the same as a corsa, but with an extra mounting point on each side

that doesn't make it bad, just easy to say "hey, this is basically a clone"

I'm in also, if the price is reasonable.

Don't know what Puddsy is rambling on about...

basically nothing, i'm mostly just annoyed that OP made a long post that doesn't answer any questions that i've seen kicking around various discords and slacks

but there's more effort in this IC than i've seen in a lot of other ones lately, i just don't think the board is particularly interesting

I can't respond to any questions I haven't seen my friend. What is it that people are asking in these discords and slacks?

fair point

i'll see if any of them are actually worth addressing and make another post if they are

Well hopefully my version will be enough to take a not-so-great board to something people enjoy even more. More than happy to address anything that comes up.

aight so i asked around to see if anyone had anything of value to add, the consensus seems to be "it's a corsa with an f13"

so, good, but not the most inspired design we've seen in a while

but classic tkls will always be run so there's no need for me to really keep going on about it

if anyone wants to call it lazy, why haven't you done it yourself?

Other boards have been dismissed by the community for being much less of a blatant copy.

Good luck with your clone.

>modernizing kustoms

>just a jane clone

your marketing is cheesy but the board seems nice

Are you ever satisfied with anything?

he ain't wrong, these kustoms all look the same
Is that a bad thing when they all look clean af? I'm down for an OTD clone that is actually obtainable lol
If you‘re OK with supporting a lazy GB by someone who doesn’t want to create his own designs and would rather copying someone else’s homework, sure.
I know OP claimed to change the internals. I’m saying that’s not enough “changes”.
It’s a clone. Except it’s not sold on Taobao, so it’s A-OK /s
Until that someone else's work gets readily and easily accessible to me (or I guess anyone), then yeah, I'm cool supporting someone else 'copying homework'. If the OG designer really wants to stick it me, this designer copying, or anyone else, they should release the product in an equally or more accessible way.

Thank you for this. Nailed it.

so this is the closest thing you'll get to a corsa

So long as by Old Meets New that the OP can hopefully find a supplier that can attain the quality control to value this board a worthy competitor.  To be continued, lets give OP the benefit of proving (to himself and those of us interested in this IC) that a manu comes in with the quality on point.

I say we take this discussion on the morality of clones/similar boards to another thread.

OP is trying to run an actual IC for his board that he clearly put thought and effort into. Let's not clog up the works here with our opinions on what's right, wrong, or otherwise morally ambiuous.

I'm definitely interested in this and would die to own one. I think its definitely fine to draw inspiration on a product that is so successful. In this case, the design of the OTD 360C is already so perfect, so the fact that you could implement new changes to the board is something that people are understating. I love it, good luck with the group buy!

There are some differences, there are some similarities. You can take them into account and individually decide whether this infringes on your personal moral compass concerning keyboard innovation. To me, it looks nice and it's great to see new creatives offering a well-done kit that isn't easily accessible.

GLWB Would, congrats on what looks like a great first production. I'm also a designer that wants to eventually take a stab at producing a kustom-level custom, so I hope this works out for you!

Will there be a custom PCB that’s just similar to Hiney’s H88 or are you just going to order from Hiney himself?

Also, how many units are planned to be made? Will it be FCFS or raffle?

As stated in the first post, i will be using the hiney's H88

Were would updates on this project be? Also cannot find you on discord :(

Updates will all be here. And here is the latest:

This is all a very new process for me and as such I wanted to test the process in a safer environment. I have funded a private run to "prototype the process" and learn the ins and outs of manufacturing, shipping and all the logistics that go into having more than a proto made. Currently my waitlist is full, but if i reach the end of it and there are still extras left over i will make them available via a public raffle.

I hope to run this again, publicly, but i can't give a date as theres other designs i want to have made too. Until then heres an album of the new proto (im very happy with it) — https://flic.kr/s/aHsmJLJuQh

Looks great, and respectable decision to not rush into a buy, even if it means we'll have to wait a bit more for when a public buy goes live. Silver lining is that when (if?) you do run a public buy, you'd hopefully be more experienced and able to run a bigger run than if you went in blind.

I have some other designs id like to run before a second round of the En Dash so it might not even be 2020 – but that is entirely dependant on the success and timeframe of other goodies

I'm new to the customs scene, but I think it's a handsome board! I'm definitely interested and looking forward to seeing what colours options there will be.

Edit: Ah. Just reread that it was a private GB. This link was sitting in a Discord DM for a while for me. But I'd still be down if this ever goes into a public GB.

I got a few PMs.

The condition is immaculate, the colour is best friend green.

I wasn't selling though, just letting you know I have one.

If I'm not mistaken it's only been a private GB with a supposed public one in the future? At least one can hope haha.

I think so, I've decided to move on to other projects and leave this one as the single private GB
