The materials look very nice. I also like the rune detail. How far recessed are the bottoms of the keycaps when mounted? There are no renders of a side view so it’s hard to tell. From the first image, they look almost even with the top edge. I think most of us prefer the caps to sit slightly lower

Okay, I’m not versed enough in the specifics to judge. It looks like, from this diagram (which appears accurate since I’ve found the same in other diagrams), that the switch sticks up 6.6mm above the plate and the. Another 3.6mm to the top of the stem.
(Attachment Link)
What I cannot seem to find is the height of a GMK keycap (depth of stem inserts and skirt height), to finish the equation. Is there a standard that designers use?
Yeah it seemed that 7mm was standard when designing. Then it’ll be a little bit above cause of gasket compression but no more than .25mm or so.
It wouldn’t be hard from a design perspective but a huge design goal was to have as low as possible front bezel.
Is that rose gold plate and weight going to be in the gb?
This looks amazing. Hopefully, the price won't be too high ($300) or less. A guy can dream.

Why 02 in the top right corner of the back?

copper base and steel top pretty much ensures it's gonna be pretty expensive sadly.

That was just an example of numbering for serializing the units. So it’ll start at 01 and go up. We felt doing a 01 / XXX was too busy
"limited quantity" again...
Thanks for the feedback, all. I own the 268.1 and it is indeed almost exactly flush from case top edge to bottom of GMK caps. Don’t suppose we convince you to adjust the design closer to 7.5mm? Especially since the inner edge has a fillet
Is that rose gold plate and weight going to be in the gb?
Any idea about prices?
WIll there be color options for the logo?
very luxurious!! any estimates on when the GB would run, hoping it'll be a while so my wallet has time to recover from all the recent keycap GBs :)
Is there a clear coat or PVD on that copper ? It will get green-ish then black after a while if not protected...
This seems to fit the bill perfectly for what I've been looking for. Do the renders only depict the founder's edition, or will the standard edition look the same just with different materials?
WIll there be color options for the logo?
We are still exploring color options for the standard edition release, but the Founder's Edition will likely only have mirror-polished copper be an option for the rune badge.
Reserved
This is so cool, hope it will be around 50bux

This is one of those boards that's so nice it makes me regret being a split ergo/ortho user
Hey everyone,
Just want to touch on a few questions that keep coming up related to availability and price. I know everyone hates waiting. We are still working out the final details, comparing multiple manufacturers, and calculating what type of quantity run we feel comfortable executing.
Our main goal is to deliver a high quality, premium keyboard in a timely fashion with as few hiccups as possible (easier said than done). What this means is that the first run will likely remain small, and because of this and our choices to work with manufacturers who are known for their high-quality work, the prices will reflect that. We aren't building to meet a price point, but rather building what we feel will be an amazing keyboard and then pricing accordingly.
Once everything behind the scenes is worked out, prototypes are ordered and contracts are signed, I'll be posting the details well in advance. Expect at least a 4-6 week notice before the GB officially begins.
why do people feel the need to make a post saying reserved...makes me laugh honestly. This board is real nice though, hopefully I can cop one.To have an original IC post, and another one concerning the updates, to things seperated, that way people who come here once in a while to see the advancement of the project can easily take a glance at it instead of searching through a mountain of renders in the OP
I'm in! This keeb looks super-clean. Any chance there will also be a case foam included in addition to the plate one—or at least available from MKUltra as an extra?
Cheers,
Hotswap PCB?

There really isn’t any room for foam inside the case.

It says in the IC that there will be some provided by MKUltraCorp...
@sever you didn't read the IC but OP you're contradicting yourself?

@sever means a foam between the case bottom and the PCB
@voxkey confirmed there isn't any room for it.
the IC suggests there is foam between the plate and the PCB
Is there any possibility of ISO layout for this board?
...
Whoa! Where’s the ISO support?
We will support ISO if enough interest is shown, but all of our plate files will be made open-source (including ISO) regardless. So even if you’re an avid ISO user and we don’t have an ISO plate, you’ll be able to get one made. We will also be optimizing our ISO plate for consistency, just like our other plates.
The PCB will support ISO out-of-the-box.
Eski: We will have ISO support for others, but not for you.I can live with this as long as I get my name engraved into the plate as promised ;)
Will the Founder's Edition be reserved for a select few or will it be limited FCFS?I'm pretty sure vox hates fcfs so it shouldn't be fcfs. Hoping for a raffle.
no e-white for the SE?
damn. so then please make enough FE Versions available then. white is pretty popular.no e-white for the SE?
Unfortunately, no. We won’t be overlapping colors between versions. So there won’t be white or black available for the SE.
I have a mech e degree. I’ve worked at Emerson Process Management for 8ish year; then an explosive welding company for almost a year and now with Anton Paar. I have not “released” any products under my own name before. Thanks for clarification! still want an FE!
Love the design and the whole idea.
Although, would it be possible to have a layout without the logo?
I don't think its a bad logo, i'm just a more simple type

I plan on making the badge drawing open source so in the future you could mill or 3d print your own design to go in the space.

Any chance for a WKL version? o.o
Unless I missed it how many units will be available? Not the FE. I already know this about to be sold out before I blink

I asked on discord when they first launched the IC and they said they were thinking 15-25 FE and 2-3x as many for the SE. May have changed from then though.
whats the difference between the fe and se?

So true. May the best price win my money. Sub $300 for high-end custom boards has started becoming a thing! Yes!
given the rise of affordable options, I don't think I would spend $300 or more on a 60/65 keyboard, unless it's from key cult or Rama and has impeccable anodeWhat are the affordable options? I didnt see any 65% keyboard sub 300€ recently

Didnt we just have issues with kbdfan ran switch opener quality designed by ai03? Kbdfan manufacturing is not top tier, it is budget. Pricing reflects as such.

Well, technically kbfans dont manu anything. They are just a shop that work as a proxy and shipping, so the designer dont run all the GB process itself. The problem with the switch openers as ai03 said was that the manu ****ed his measures, they didnt follow the designs exactly. He was really upset
I think it's great that we all have so many options in basically every layout and at every price. There are quite a few projects I'm following closely and planning on joining, or have already joined, at both low price points and higher price points as well.My piggy bank is ready to be shattered to buy the iron, can't wait.
Specifically for this board, our main focus was on the design and engineering of the board and its feature set. Furthermore, we chose to go with suppliers who are more expensive, but offer consistency and high, repeatable quality.
What this means, unfortunately, is that the price will reflect this. While we will not release final pricing until everything is confirmed, I will say that the Iron165 SE will be priced around other high-end, premium offerings.
For reference, Dixie Mech just released Bauer pricing (Aluminum kit = $460, Brass Kit = $560). I'm guessing IRON165 will be priced similarly.

well, the NR65, Polaris60. anyways, I don't think this GB is going to be for me.
Edit: doesn't the mk community really praise kbdfans for their tofu case? Anyways, I've heard horror stories of Korean Kustoms and good QC with Chinese keeb.

When will raffles signups begin? And when will it be drawn?
When will raffles signups begin? And when will it be drawn?
When the group buy launches we will do the raffle for the FE most likely the day before the SE goes on sale. So for those that miss the FE they can still have option to try for the SE. This will most likely happen in September.

Exactly. The FE has a representing price for the materials chosen alongside the scarcity, not so much with the SE.

11% before taxes is nothing to scoff at.
Here it is even like 20%
~400e * 0.2 = ~80e so yes it does pay up a bit. also that the shipping costs will be higher from the us.
25% of full price (shipping included) + 27$ fee here. Seems to vary a ton across europeSame here. I believe it's all of EU countries (same customs, same import taxes).
Extremely exciting project, beautifully designed and hopefully all that excitement and desire remains once the estimated price is announced (unlike a couple other similar designs).

lbaron got in touch with me on discord unprompted and broke down the price with me and cleared up the beef i normally have with insane boards like this
he was very straightforward with me about why the FE costs as much as it does, and that which price points they're trying to hit
unlike some other GBs from new designers at this price point, nobody is trying to hide any info, or treating anything like a trade secret
it was a very straightforward, honest conversation, and it was super refreshing
he also mentioned that there is a good chunk of money saved up and set aside in case things go wrong
these guys are genuinely passionate about this project and even i'm excited about it

Even if the price is justified doesn't mean you need to buy into it. You have to accept that you can't own every new keyboard. As the community is getting used to higher prices, even if it results in a more refined, durable and luxurious case, it doesn't mean everyone has to be able to afford that case.
You have to let go of the mindset that you have to own every case.

It’s not the FE but the “more affordable” SE that annoyed me.
Even leaving the pink elephant that is Polaris (also a gasket kit BTW) aside, comparing this to the other spec-equivalent kits, I still don’t see why it warrants the $450 price point.

If these guys wants to get compensation for their R&D & design, fine whatever, but at least be brave and transparent enough to post what they have privately sent to other (https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/cm5mn0/iron165_pricing_and_vendor_announcement/ew0eqk3/) people (https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/cm5mn0/iron165_pricing_and_vendor_announcement/ew19u61/) so everyone can understand their justifications.
Remember, they're a new vendor. They don't get to have the benefit of the doubt. As designers, surely they understand the import of telling a clear product story to an audience? Is it my fault that they failed to show me why their keyboard is worth its cost? Look at what Keycult did (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kSJLZ5QFRTg) to avoid complaints like mine.
Prototypes are still being produced. So they'll do a video when it comes out. The GB won't begin until that happens. Do the people complaining about the price think this board won't sellout quickly?
Had a great conversation through slack DMs with the makers. They sent nudes. I offered constructive criticism. We're all good now.
Now I really want to hear what they've been saying in private, even though I don't have interest in buying this board nor do I think they can't put whatever price they want on it.
Good story helps to sell expensive product though, that's for damn sure.

+1
Also had a great conversation with them when I met them at a grocery store in Los Angeles yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.
Short version is that I asked what the point of all the exotic materials is, and lbaron told me basically "idk it's cool" instead of making up some bull**** about "the density properties of copper and stainless production" which wouldn't be dissimilar to what I've heard from others.exotic materials? that is alu and brass?

As the community is getting used to higher prices, even if it results in a more refined, durable and luxurious case, it doesn't mean everyone has to be able to afford that case.
You have to let go of the mindset that you have to own every case.

It's a bit narcissistic to believe that these guys are trying to prove anything to you, no?

Standard Edition
We're very proud to announce we've partnered up with CannonKeys in the US, MyKeyboard in the EU, and ILUMKB in the AP/China market to handle all sales of the Iron165 SE.
What this hopefully means, and why we're so excited to work with these amazing stores, is that we should be able to offer not only a smoother buying experience, but also a higher quantity of boards than we initially thought possible.
USA - CannonKeys - Up to 100 boards
EU - MyKeyboard - Up to 50 boards
AP - ILUMKB - Up to 50 boards
And what about the FE edition?

Thanks. Will you provide the date of the gb for the FE? On discord or here? And what about the FE edition?
Sent from my MIX using Tapatalk
We will be personally handling the sales of FE so they will all be shipped out of the US.

when is the gb going to start for this board? and i how much is the se version?
The Iron165 FE will be limited to 25 total serialized units, never to be made again. We will be handling the group buy for these directly. There will be a public raffle for 10 total group buy spots.
So I'm not sure if I missed the information anywhere else, but is this implying that 15 FE spots are a private group buy? Where are the additional 15 going?

The other 15 are going to those who pledged support to the iron165 very early on.

Yeah that's the thing, I'm either gonna buy ten boards getting to the one thing I really want. Or could just cut out the middle and get the one nice one.You think you're only going to get one nice one. I'm waiting on 3 boards from gb's and yet I still want an FE and an SE iron if I can manage to get both. FE looks amazing but I don't want to miss the possible plum SE.
ikr I want the founders edition too but my wallet is already crying ;-;
edit: does anyone know what keycaps were being used for the navy standard edition render?

Does anyone know if the remaining 10 FE spots are going to be on a shopify-based website?
I guess cannon keys is also the vendor for Canada?
Navy, 100%. You usually don't see it in a lot of keyboards out now and it will be quite unique. Not to mention how good it will look. Not sure what you mean, Navy is incredibly common - it's essentially a standard offering for boards now. Not that it won't look good, but it's hardly unique.

*praying for navy* btw any news on pricing? The post seems to show that the FE pricing is finalized but it implies the SE is not. Will it stay at 445 or are there hopes for a lower price/ price bracket?
That must be really rough, wish you guys luck on that. Btw, two questions about the pcb: Does it support antighosting? Are there any widely available pcbs that fit the keyboard? I'm always worried with high end custom keyboards that I'll spill water on it and the keyboard just becomes a paperweight.
What parts will be user-replaceable?
Our hope is that everything, except the case itself will be user-replaceable in some form or fashion. One of our main goals when designing this board was to make absolutely sure that no IRON165 will ever become a glorified paperweight.

I'm always worried with high end custom keyboards that I'll spill water on it and the keyboard just becomes a paperweight. The user replaceable aspect probably means that they'll offer the ability to purchase multiple pcbs and plates in the event that you brick a pcb, not that you'll be able to use commonly available ones. It's also possible that they'll use an interchangeable pcb design between the iron165 and 265 and so on later down the line such as how the Rama m6 has maintained the same pcb dimensions throughout its various renditions
edit: Ty phylux for pointing that out. However, as there was nothing like a list of pcbs that would fit this board, I was just wondering how the designers would fullfill this goal.

So it has some about of x-key rollover built in? Sorry for nub questions I don't know much about pcb design.
Damn. The renders weren't lying! I'm guessing the finish on the copper is not the finish you will be going for in the final models? If you ever want to sell the FE prototype for a reasonable price let me know.
edit: +1 request for typing test too please!
I know these are protos, so I understand they won't be perfect, but I wanted to at least ask what your thoughts are on the small defects on the FE. I noticed the gaps around the copper base plate aren't very uniform, and the front edge seems to sit lower than the top case. Are these things that are likely to be fixed before the final product? I'll probably try for an FE regardless (it looks sexy AF and I'm a huge sucker for copper), but wanted to ask. Image shows the areas in question.
(Attachment Link)
While we are asking questions about the FE prototype, I have a few more. The white on the FE is supposed to be e-white, but in a lot of the pictures they look grey. Is that just because of the inconsistent lighting? Also if you have the prototype pcb finished, can I have a measurement on the size of the switch pin holes? If you could measure 10 and average them, I can do some guess work to see if holtites/millmax/chineseknockoffmillmaxes will work.

Good eye there. The top and bottom aren’t actually screwed together and gaskets aren’t installed. We just wanted to get pics up as fast as possible.
We’ll be going over everything very, very closely and make adjustments where necessary. In fact, we’ve already made two adjustments/tweaks. We want these to be perfect.

The finish on the prototypes is what we are going with. We initially wanted polished copper, but it was far too expensive and risky to pull off.
Typing tests to come after the holiday!!! :)

It gonna lie, that flat proto color of iron isn't very appealing. It's almost like a lipstick Maybelline.
But I'll wait to see what the finished product looks like. Best wishes!

Meh I understand where you are coming from, and I mostly agree that the polished finish in the renders look better. However, it shouldn't be that hard to polish it yourself. Just an hour with some polishing cream, and even faster with a polishing belt and it should look pretty good. Just remember to clear coat it after or it will oxidize again. Even if I don't win the raffle, who am I kidding I won't win the raffle, I think I'll do that with the brass weight anyway.
Whatever the case, I think there is something more mature about the more muted appearance of this copper finish. I think people are just dissapointed that the prototype doesn't match the amazing renders exactly.
edit: btw do you know when the estimated delivery date is? I need to know when so I know what vendor to buy from.

Was actually considering doing exactly that, assuming I can get in on the raffle.

Can you tell me why they suck? I personally don't really see the downside to adding them. Also soldering is a pain, why bother when you don't have to? Especially for a board this expensive I want to be able to experience more than one kind of switch on it in the long run, as well as relube switches in the coming years. Unsoldering is super tedious if you don't have a pump.
I used millmax for one build and it was the biggest pain in the ass even though it worked as expected. Millmax sockets are an unbelievabe a waste of money and time. That day I found out that if I ever truly wanted to replace switches, I'd rather just go over an 1800 keyboard with a $5 plastic desoldering pump 10 times over than install a free set of millmax sockets on a single 40%While we are asking questions about the FE prototype, I have a few more. soldering is piss easy, mill max sockets are a pain if you install them incorrectly, and they have a ridiculously short wear life so you can't change them out ad infinitum, whereas with soldering it's just a skill activity
i have a tremor and i've soldered plenty of boards and they've all turned out fine
if you're really worried about it just pay someone else to do it

I was under the impression that you just take them and push them into the pin holes.Mill max sockets still require soldering, and you have to be careful not to get solder inside the socket itself. It's a time consuming business and fairly intricate.

This is phenomenal. Sad that I won't be able to buy this because my group buy is in October and I probably won't have funds till later. Depending on the lighting, it almost appears to change hue a bit. Sometimes it looks like a deep purple, other times it appears like a deep, red wine. We're very, very happy with how it came out.
Still praying for plum/navy. I will very much cry if navy doesn't happen lol.

Discord is a bad combination of an RSS reader, a chatroom and SteamDiscord is miserable. It saddens me that everyone around this hobby has moved over to it and throws other methods of comms to the wind. I wish GH's irc would make a return, or Matrix to become more adopted. The FE is more of a proof of concept, a thank you to our very first supporters, and generally just something very cool (or at least we think so).
But we don't plan to stop making boards after this. We've got a few more boards in the works that we plan to run in the future, and if demand is high enough, we're likely to run the 165 SE again as well.

Excellent. E-Stripper Pink badges incoming.
Had the chance to play around with the Iron165 FE and talk with Luke for a bit. I am extremely particular with my keyboards, and am not afraid to throw a product under the bus. That being said, I can easily say this is one of the best keyboards I've laid my hands on. The weight felt amazing, but at the same time not gimmicky at all. Typing feel and sound was great. Finish was extremely consistent, machining was perfect. On top of that, Luke is an amazingly down to earth guy who is in the hobby for all the right reasons.
For anyone who is having second thoughts about this keyboard, go for it and don't look back. Best 65% of the year hands down.
Good luck to you both, and I can't wait to see the hype grow!
will there be a limit to the number of boards each person can buy? in for a FE and a SE :)There will be ~10 spots raffled to purchase an FE. You are not allowed to enter more than once for the FE. The SE will be FCFS with 100 boards for NA, 50 for EU, and 50 for Asia/Oceania. The vendors will make it so you can only add one iron to cart at a time. So you can buy more than one but you'll have to do 2 transactions.
Regarding the FE Raffle:
If we enter in the morning round will we know if we won before the night round?
If yes, can we enter again in the night round assuming we didn't win one in the morning round?
Regarding the FE Raffle:It will be similar to keycult raffles, 2 entry times into the same raffle. You can only enter once, and you will know if you won after both entry times have occurred.

not to be blast you or anything but I think it's pretty unfair to vox and lbaron to ask for the link to another group buy on their page. they worked really hard on this project and it's rude to come along and say that you like some other product better in their thread. you are entitled to your own opinion, but take that elsewhere.
tldr: be considerate of GB runners before you post something

Decent. Sadly only the FE is an option for me as the white version is the only one i like. SE with that colorings is no option to me. So either FE or none.Same, I'm trying to get down on that hyper limited 1337 stock
The "never to be made again" in the FE edition is so sad because I want it so so bad but there is no way I'm gonna be that lucky :( T_TThat's all part of what makes it special, homie :)
Either way I'm super excited, have been following and waiting for the project since "public day 1" :)
Congrats for the amazing project guys!

Hey everyone!HYPE

Here are the rules:
- Only one entry per person. This means only entering once, not once during both windows.
- Form must filled out in its entirety. Invoices will be sent to the email provided so please make sure to double check all information provided.
- Filling out this form does not guarantee you a spot.
- Spots won are not transferable.
- Spots can be rescinded without notice and for any reason deemed appropriate by Smith + Rune and partners.
- Any attempt to circumvent these rules in order to increase your odds of winning will result in disqualification.
If you have any questions, please contact us AFTER filling out the form. Submissions outside of their respective 3-minute windows will not count.
Hoping the address thing isn't disqualifying. I woke up far to early to catch the first entry period.

sorry if i missed it but are there more renders / pictures with the graphite case?If you wait a bit, they just got the protos yesterday for navy and graphite so you should see some more pics soon.
Question for @Upas on how the GB will go down. I missed FE and want to make sure I have my bases covered for this.
Will there be a google form -> Invoicing, or will there be a product page -> check out?
And for extras can we add before/after - so that when it's live we just have to worry about checking out?
I'm familiar with your store layout, just want to make sure I'm not scrambling around on Saturday and miss out because I misunderstood something.
Hi Upas
One thing I'd like to clarify, if you don't mind.
You say that, if you haven't submitted your options by the end of the GB, then your spot will be released. What's considered the end of the GB? Is it when a designated amount of time has passed, or is it when the KB has sold out?
If the GB is over when it's sold out, and if it sells out in a couple of minutes, then this raises the question as to whether your spot would be released if you don't get the information entered in those couple of minutes.
If you have a set amount of time to enter in the information, of course, that won't be a problem... but, since you suggested getting the information filled in ASAP, if made it sound more urgent than this.
This is a good point - I'll set a deadline and include it in the email. I think 3 days after purchase is a reasonable deadline.
