These are all so beautiful. What's the best way to get a 40% keyboard without paying 250 dollars these days?
Buy a used JD40, wait for the JD45, buy a Planck, or build your own. The cheapest way would probably be to get a case cut and hand wire it.

uhm, as i get it the JD45 won't exactly be cheap
Probably not $250 though and the prototypes may be cheaper but I'm not sure how many were made.

Shameless plug for the blue Alps + carbon fiber case JD45 I'll be selling shortly.

I don't think any iterations of the JD40 have cost $250, have they?  @.@
None that I know of.
People in the 1980s, in general, were clearly just better than we are now in every measurable way.

i was told $300-350 range with the milled alu casing, though that's quite a while ago.

Ohhh, milled aluminum.  In a tray-type casing?  The common JD40 cases are the plate style cases that are either laser or waterjet cut, and are not terribly expensive (~$100 or less).

One handed 40% coupled with a trackball would make a lovely "zero" movement combination.

Hi all - I actually registered for the site because of this thread, I'm in love with these little keyboards... Is there any way to get a JD40 nowadays? It's sold out at ctrlalt and I can't afford the Smallfry model.

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Another logical Unifying 40% keyboard.
It is totally hand wired. I use a usb to usb keyboard converter for TMK firmware support.
This one is just a experimental try. Later I will build a new wireless one with improved layout for myself and a smaller converter.
It works perfect and the keyboard itself only weights 270g with keycaps.

Here is my 40% keyboard. Even smaller than the JD40.

And this is the layout. I use the Neo 2 Layout and can touch type the full german layout with all 30 letters at full speed (which is 40WPM in my case).

All movement keys and keys like Esc and Enter are on the left hand on layer 4, numbers are on the right hand. It is just odd to type the 0.I will replace the ¿ in the future. Layer 3 is pretty handy for programming

The keyboard is build on the pcb of a larger version with bigger thumb keys

You can find a few more pictures on my blog

Well, this is my first one but probably not the last. And it's not completely finished, still waiting on some WS2812b LED strips. Oh, and a white braided cable. And need to find some screws so I can make the middle layer(s) an get rid of those spacers. It's nice but when I received all parts I couldn't wait.

I'm in love with that case. So the PCB is between the acrylic layers? And switches are PCB-mounted, right?

Yes, the PCB is between the acrylic layers but the switches are plate mounted.

Any switch that goes through a metal plate is plate mounted, no plate = PCB mounted.
