Designed by funderburker & quaddepos, PCB design by Upas!

Quaddepos (the co-designer behind GMK Minimal and Perestroika, to name a couple) reached out to me about a layout he had wanted to see so we put our heads together and came up with Onyx! Something new yet classical and designed without any compromises!

I'll add my own Discord server aka "funderburker's house" later today so you can follow real-time updates and discussion there! Also please join Vendor servers for more GB specific info for their region!

Features
  • Gasket mounted plate
  • Seamless, internally screwed case design
  • 7 degree typing angle
  • VIA-compatible PCB with USB-C daugtherboard, designed by Upas
  • ANSI & ISO layout support, WK & WKL
  • Internally screwed minimal weight design

Is there encoder support on the pcb at all?

No, there's no encoder support. If it would, we would definitely highlight such a feature. :D

We'll sum up the replies of IC form and update everyone over the weekend on the results... :-X

Very nice design! Wondering about layout. You mention ANSI and ISO, but more specifics would be helpful. Will ANSI allow split backspace and Tsangan bottom row (if opt for WK version)? Or, alternatively, any chance of split space bar?

EDIT: I see split backspace in one of the renders. I see Tsangan bottom row. Questions answered. I don't see split space bar (looks like plate will not accommodate). Can you please confirm it will be possible to split R Shift (looks like the plate will accommodate)?

So I'm absolutely getting one unit (at least).

I'm leaning towards the silver one. Two things that bother me are the red bottom and then even moreso, it being paired with the circles. Is there any chance to get a flat back with no brass peeking through?

This may be a stupid question, but is the PCB hot swap for solder only? I'm super new to this community, but this board seems amazing.

I’m guessing it’s for people who use F keys. Typically F1-4 are the same (base) color, 5-8 are another (accent) color, and 9-12 go back to the first color. Having only 4 would keep the look consistent. But just a guess.

any reason on 4 vs 5 for the macro column?

Update about Onyx FRL TKL GB

Sorry for the long wait but here's some more concrete info on the group buy.

Join Quaddepo's OC Lab Discord server to follow Onyx updates and discussion.

IC Form results
  • First off, we'll be adding Navy Blue as a case colour option on top of the rest! So 5 case colour options - Silver/Red, Black, Green, E-White, Navy Blue.
  • We'll be sticking with aluminium full plates as the default option for anodized boards and brass full plate for e-coated boards.
  • We're adding Polycarbonate half-plate as an extra plate option.
  • By the results it seems that ISO extra plate options would be beneficial for Asia, Europe and UK. Please check with appropriate region's vendor.

Question results (piecharts)
More

Pricing and availability
(will be updated)

Onyx will be available through 6 vendors. Here's a list of base pricing for Onyx FRL TKL, their availability per region and GB date & time. The table will be updated with specific times once everyone's awake. :D

Bonus stuff
  • There's going to be 3 build streams in the near future with Onyx prototypes by Apiary, Minterly and LightningXI.
  • Plate files for all variants will be shared sometime after GB ends.
  • Thank you for all the support, friends!

There's actually some build streams by Apiary and Minterly that went low-key and there's even a sound test by Minterly!

For people still deciding on if they're getting an Onyx, please give build streams a look and remember - GB is happening this weekend!
Check OP for the launch times at your region and pricing for Onyx base kit and extras.

What do you think about the sound, do you like it?

One last update on the GB launch times and then I think I'll update after the weekend. (This content is visible 3x on this one page  )

Please follow vendor channels and visit their website for more information about how it's going to happen (raffle, FCFS, hybrid raffle, etc.). If there's no content on Onyx, they're probably already prepping everything so just wait a bit.

Good luck and thank you for the interest and support!

Ordered e-white, though minterly's video made me 2nd guess that decision.  I'm surprised CannonKeys hasn't sold out yet.  I thought for sure the allocations would be gone within the first hour.

You should get navy and silver also.

Odd layouts often sell slower (unless by Yuktsi or some other demi-god). Then in a couple years you start seeing regret posts. I had a Black Bird which had a similar style to this keyboard, same deal. I don't need 30 TKL keyboards in my life.

Ah man I was going to get in on this but at $600+ for everything, that's outside my budget :(

But GLWGB I know this is going to do well.
