DESKEYS Topre Silencing Rings
by DeanS and kevinplus(He's unable to post here cause Geekhack doesn't send out email confirmations anymore, someone help please)

Discord for faster update notifications

Hello all, this is DeanS, you may know me from the FC980C plate IC.

I’ve been working with kevinplus on custom Topre products, and we are happy to announce the launch our new store, Deskeys.io(coming soon). This store is mainly dedicated to efforts into Topre products and accessories. You may know kevinplus from the polaris 60%.

After trying different materials and factories, we are happy to present you our first product, DES rings. These silencer rings provide a quieter typing experience unrivalled by any other silencing ring on the market, and can compete head-to-head with genuine Topre silencing rings. They are soft with very good compression rate.

218737-1
#2, #3, #4, #5, purple slider ring

Options
DES ring #2 : 0.2mm thickness, ultra thin edition. Very minimal key travel reduction. Suits stock Topre stock domes.
DES ring #3:  0.3mm thickness, thin edition. Better silencing performance than the #2, while also keeping travel reduction minimal.  Also suits stock Topre stock domes.
DES ring #4:  0.4mm thickness, medium edition. Feels softer than the original rings from purple sliders. Suited for domes with harsher tactility (Sony BKE domes and BKE Redux).
DES ring #5  0.5mm thickness, the Original. 99% identical to authentic Topre silencing rings. Suits those who wants the rings from purple sliders. Suits for domes with harsher tactility (Sony BKE domes and BKE Redux).

218739-2
All of the rings will have a thin PET film coating for durability.

We have tested other silencing rings:
Kbdfans’ silence-x rings: Thin enough but doesn’t compress. Hard to install.
Hypersphere rings: Good compression performance but thicker than others at 0.6mm; the loss of key travel is noticeable.

218741-3
218743-4
Also silencing ring from purple slider(left) vs DES ring #4(right)

These rings will be for sale soon; we hope to bring everyone the best silencing rings this community has ever seen.

Price
TBD

I'm interested. Great timing, I've had a FC660C for a few years now and have only just started looking at mod options, particularly in terms of silencing. This seems like just what I'm after. Interested to hear what else you have planned!

Very interested, about time someone actually dedicates the time necessary to proper topre mods - the current silencing as well as slider (especially) options are all lacklustre and have been for years, I'm glad to see someone with the intent to actually work on that.

I have a stock 55g 87u waiting to be modded. Excited if you can produce some (affordable) MX sliders!

We've been working on the sliders for months now: Longer stem to compensate silencing rings plus MX compatibility. We went through multiple rounds of prototyping, and I'd say they are 90% ready(keycaps don't fly lol), but we won't release them before reaching the final 10%. Please join our server for faster notification on the DES sliders :)

About time we make topre great again

Wow this gives me hope, this whole thread gives me hope for topre. I thought that I would sell my fc660c after building my first custom but now I feel like my fc660c can reach a different level. Thanks

Cool! hopefully this turns out well, I'm sure a lot of people will be happy to have an "improved" silencing ring option.

Great timing! I was pretty close to buying some of the KBDFans silencing rings, but I'm thinking now that I might just hold off for these!

Also, really excited for the MX sliders that you're working on!

Which one of these would be comparable to the rings that come with a HHKB Type S? I lost a few and would love to be a set and another set for bke redux domes.

How do these compare with Keyclack's V2 silencing rings? I find them a tiny bit too thin, but the fact that they have an adhesive side and a larger surface area (to prevent them from being dislodged if they aren't set on the slider just so) I think still edges them out compared to these, but it's nice that you are offering several thickness options.

Good luck with the new store!

I'm not sure how they feel, but they look pretty hard to install, and once they are installed, you can't swap them for a different thickness later, right?

Also the chance of being dislodged is slim, unlike the kbdfans' rings, they are horizontally firm.

Have someone measured how thick the Silence-X rings are?
And is there any standard to measure compressibility?

Good research done by the developers here.
