What's the average price one needs to drop for such a knife?

Very nice Sebenza's!! I also collect folders. Most of my blades are in storage except my Benchmade 940 [can't live without a 'reverse tanto'] and my Spyderco Manix 2 [my EDC so I could try CTS-BD1]. When I find the box that has my Spyderpack I'll take some pics. You really do have some nice folders. Keep it up!

PS: did you wrap your own paracord handle?

Wow. Nice collection. Can't believe you even got some Reeves in there. He makes great looking knives out of some amazing steel. I like the bigger knives he makes like the pacific.

Here's a nice site with most of what's currently available.  Of course some of the most desirable ones are no longer available through retail outlets, but only through private sellers.  I was lucky enough to pick up a couple from 2010 and 2011 when the blades were still S30V steel.  The newer ones are S35VN which is still a very good steel, but just not quite a tough or a good edge holder as S30V by most accounts.

I'll post pictures of the new Small 21 with Lignum Vitae inlays and Mnandi with Tamboti inlays when they come in next week.  That will be my first Mnandi.  I'm very excited to get it.  It will probably be featured in any future pictures of any keyboards I post.  ;-)

I didn't wrap the handle of the Snody, but I tied the green and black lanyards on the Large Sebenza and the Acies2.

The Snody "Boss" came with that lanyard coated with some sort of resin so it's perminent.

I'm certain that it's an OC disorder.  Before knives and keyboards it was neodymium magnets and before that it was WWII battle rifles, by far my most expensive collecting habit.

Have you ever thought of getting checked out to see if it's a disorder?

Not trying to be funny or anything.

Knives are bad for me too. Most expensive are my electric guitars tho! By far. 10 realforces = 1 G&L.

You know how you know when you are coming down with a really bad cold, the flu or a soar throat?  Well, I'm pretty certian it's a clinical disorder.  It's not something that's harmful to anything but my wallet, though.  ;-)  I'm sure that if I explained my habits to my doctor she would say, "Yep, you've got an OCD." And she would suggest that I cancel my Paypal account.  Nothin' doin'.  I'll just live with it.  ;-)  After all, I don't end up with scars or a limp, I end up with nice keyboards and knives.  ;-)  I remember that my dad collected things, too.  Still does.  He just has different tastes than I do.

I also "collected" a Black, a Red and a Brown Miniature Pinschers.  They match my Filco key switches.  ;-)

Hoarding is when you don't give a crap what it is and just keep it all.  Still OCD tho.

That's an excellent collection, megnin!

My sharp things are a lot cheaper: I have one Byrd cara cara (ss handle) and a cara crara2 in G10. My pride is my Benchmade 470. I think I'd rather a non-assisted knife, though.

I'll post a picture once I get back home.

I eventually want to get some decent kitchen cutlery, but I really don't have the space/time (to prepare food right) or money (after keyboards, there isn't much!)

Yours is so clean. My stones are ALL green, black, brown etc. I really need to put some Comet to 'em.

And I still just prefer traditional stones but my wife is the happiest both camping and in the kitchen since I bought that Spyderco kit.

At that price you have a lot of choice. You can't go wrong with a Buck, Gerber or Boker in this range.

It's hard to recommend a specific piece. We all have our tastes.

How do you like this one? Buck Dorado (0270BKS-B)
http://www.buckknives.com/index.cfm?event=products.search&SearchTerms=folder&x=0&y=0 (http://www.buckknives.com/index.cfm?event=products.search&SearchTerms=folder&x=0&y=0)

This one retails at $76 but I've seen eStore this morning selling it around ~$50. It comes with 420HC steel (which is OK)
Distinctive design, simple, clean, solid, can be opened with one hand. Also seams to be able to take it apart for cleaning.

Some little more expensive Dorado's comes with a leather sheath and better quality steels. You can buy the sheath separatly from Buck for $13.

ie
0271RWS-B got 12C27Mod Sandvik satin finish blade
0271CMS-B got  154CM

I would recommend this one to you i3oiler, I flip mine open with the flick of my wrist, and the blade can come out just with a thumb movement. Not exactly a "high quality", but I love mine. Stores 3 blades in the black rubber portion on the back and one in the knife itself. It's the best for all sorts of applications, plus I don't worry about worrying the blade since it is replaceable.

I think I had my Sog Spec Elite I.  That's generaly what I carry.  It's not assisted open, but it is very smooth.  If I go to southside, or when I was at Lejeune I carry a LL-80 or my Smith&Wesson Powerglide II.

There are a lot of Spydercos and Kershaws that would serve you well there.  Great knives that won't break the bank.  Do you have any preference as to size, blade shape, etc?

After a week of carrying the Benchmade, I have to say I'm a huge fan.  It looks, feels, and works so much better than the cheap POS knife that I had before!

They are pricey, but for an EDC worth it in my mind :)

Omg. How many Sebenzas do you have? LOL.

For EDC, I would always recommend the Spyderco Tenacious. Nice little knife for $30-40 bucks. Like the G19 of knives.

I agree., you can't go wrong with a Tenacious. It's my main EDC knife.

Oh, it was just a local sporting goods store. They were bought out by a different chain and had to get rid of anything that the new chain didn't stock, so I was able to snag that Benchmade for $125. I'd always wanted one, just was never willing to cough up the $200+ that Benchmade usually wants for their balisongs.

Here in Montana we can have anything except switchblades (hurr they open fast they're so scary) and can carry anything with a blade 4" or less.

My father uses a Flash II for EDC occasionally, I'm quite fond of it. Generally I stick to G10 handles but the Flash feels nice and grippy to me. Might have to get one for myself.

Wow, Megnin... One of the coolest cats on GH for sure.

Some beautiful blades in this thread. Truly great craftsmanship.

I tend to stick to box cutters for daily use because of their ability to change blades quickly and easily (I have a really nice Sheffield one - got it from Craigen auto parts lol)

I do keep a 15 dollar stainless steel 5 inch "easy open" all purpose survival knife in my car. Never ever used it - I wanna keep it sharp just in case I need to you know, "survive" one day

Benchmade makes such pretty knives. I know Spydercos are supposed to be the epitome of practical, but I just can't get used to that oversized back with the big-ass hole in the steel. And let's admit it, anyone who has more than one or two knives buys them, among other things, for looks.

I've got a pretty Scandi-heavy selection: Enzo Trapper (flat ground, D2) which is a total beast. EKA Swede 8 folder (12c27) and two Opinels in carbon steel, a #6 and #8. A Gränsfors Bruks hatchet and a Tramontina machete that's still in the process of being customized. That's one Finn, two Swedes, two Frenchies and a Brazilian.

So yeah, I fall more into the 'buy a good thing once' category. I don't tend to collect a bunch of tools all serving the same function. Except the Opinels, but they're dirt cheap, especially in Europe.

Here are a couple of mine.  I don't want to take pictures of all of mine because it will take me too long.

I have a whole set of Shun kitchen knives.  This one is the carving knife.  The pro image was not taken by me, but is some of the other knives in that set.  I also have a couple additional chefs knives that are not in that image.
[attach=1] (http://s3.amazonaws.com/wootsaleimages/Kai_Shun_9_Piece_Knife_Block_Setvw2Detail.jpg)

Here is my custom 4.5 inch hunting knife.  The guy behind www.beebeknives.com (http://www.beebeknives.com/) is a family friend, so I had him make me a custom hunting knife.  I use this thing for everything...
[attach=2]

What you don't know about me is that I grew up in the backwoods of Canada without any electricity or running water.  Our family homesteaded a farm in the total wilderness and we lived 100% off the land.  I didn't get electricity till 1994.  Oh how times have changed.  haha...

I'm not a collector but I appreciate a decent knife.

I carry one of these if I'm hiking solo in case need to cut my arm off or something. Cold Steel knives aren't very pretty or refined, and the marketing is ludicrous but they are solid and dependable. Sort of the AK47 of knives. Full tang, thick blade, and good sticky grip are things I want in that kind of knife.

This (or similar) are what I use for diving. Looks cheap because it is; you don't want to spend too much on something you're probably going to break or drop into the abyss the first time you use it. Nice and big and serrated for hacking through nets or kelp, or again cutting your arm off if you're trapped somewhere.

This is what I use in the kitchen. I prefer traditional European blades rather than Santokus, which seem to be more popular. It's also only 16cm/6 inches. Most proper chefs would use a longer knife, but I don't do enough kitchenwork to make a big knife particularly useful, or to develop enough habitual skill with it to work with one as easily as a smaller knife.

I don't have a bit collection, less than a dozen nice EDC style knives. Once this one comes in I'll take a photo. My Spiderco Police model serrated is my favorite, my Kershaw Speedsafe is my favorite EDC (because I wont be devastated if I lose it).

Lax on guns, yes. Lax on Knives, not as far as I can tell. First Axis is supposedly legal and balisongs are illegal, then vice versa, and I just can't get a straight answer. However, I'd rather not get a class 2 misdemeanor, so I'm just not going to try. Basically, I believe Balisongs are considered gravity knives, and Axis is considered Gravity or assited opening, both of which are illegal and therefore considered class 2 misdemeanors down here.

On the Nimravus, It's suprisingly comfortable for an all-metal knife. It fits in my hand well, and feels very natural. Would recommend to anyone.

Perfectly understand, you need a set of good quality knives to separate the meat from the bone of any animal that comes across your kitchen table.  Although I have a slaughter booth down in the back shed were I dispatch personally the delicious meat off the bone.  Use to work in a slaughter yard when I was young, for about 4 years.

I can't abide spending valuable cash, buying so-called meat from Coles and Woolworths when they sell only old rubbish masquerading as something that's edible.  When you have a nice setup in the bush you can easily eat quality food compared to what most will touch in their life time.

Still do, in the bush you can take your pick of which Kangaroo, Wild Pig and/or Horse to shoot.  My favorite now is the wild horse, lots of meat but you need at least an hour to strip off the tasty bits.

The down side is then finishing the carcass off before the flies, goannas and wild dogs move in, since in the summer everything seems to come out for a free feed.

I've seen more than a couple Griptillians around here. I guess it's a pretty good value for a Benchmade.

Quality isn't that impressive after the recent price fixing. As of now, Spyderco offer better value-for-money per quality.

I agree, I still love the Axis lock though. After playing with my dad's Mini Griptilian I want one.

My only Benchmade is a BM32 that I got on liquidation at Sportsman's Warehouse. Still payed way more than I should have for a "toy", but I couldn't pass up the deal on a nice Benchmade bali  :))

This is beautiful! I should get mine today!

Mods, shouldn't this be media? Its mostly photos.  :thumb:

Yeah here in MN the only knife law is no automatics. I believe.. Some have said under 4" is legal but thats only in MPLS I believe.

It's apparently considered a switchblade, though AFAIK it isn't (except for the Axis auto). IT may also be considered a Gravity knife, though.

I should also specify it's illegal to carry a switchblade/gravity knife. You can technically own one, but it must stay on your property as a collection item. I wanted something with purpose, and you can carry anything here under 5 inches as long as it isn't a switchblade/gravity knife, so I went with a Nimravus, which is a fixed blade and 4.8 inches long

You can equally damage anyone with a ball point pen especially when aimed at the eyes or the carotid artery.  Thank god the idiot pigs have never resorted to banning, carrying writing implements just yet  ::) .

Again you're living in the last place called FREEDOM, here where I live, pigs can stop and search you for anything that you're carrying and if they find any knife at all you're charged and taken down to the local pig-shop for further fines and questioning.

If they do find you carrying any sort of knife it automatically gives them right to search your place of residence to locate any more so-called illegal items (all what's deemed illegal at the time - it always has more and more items on that list so that it guarantees them more easy charges).  They don't need to work hard in getting convictions off the stupid and unintelligent.

Trust me, better to not carry anything except a sharp metal ballpoint pen when you live here in Convict Town  :thumb: .

For emergencies like you're sitting across the table looking into the eyes of someone you want to exact extreme vengeance with (like Dexter did in his last episode), then a basic BIC ballpoint pen will suffice.

Better though to have a full metal casing pen just in case you need to re-adjust your aim in a tight headlock to help penetrate the eyes without the pen body breaking off.  It won't kill them but with their surprise and shock it gives you time to up the ante for the final hit.  Not condoning killing anyone here just saying what can be done with only a simple pen.

Have you ever looked at Protech knives? http://www.bladehq.com/cat--Protech-Auto--68 (http://www.bladehq.com/cat--Protech-Auto--68)      They are built like a tank.

The only issue I have with them is they do not put safeties on most of their knives except for some of the Emerson models.

Don't get me wrong. Benchmade is my #1 favorite, but check out some of Protech's stuff if you ever get a chance.

Well I have a couple of reasons for choosing the Triage. It's Benchmade, so it's going to be of amazing quality, It's an extremely versatile knife, and it seems like a good size for EDC. While those look great, and I don't doubt they're of great quality for the price, I think the Triage suits my needs a little better than Protech would. However, I think I might look into Protech for any gifts  as they would probably suit that role very, very well.

I'd like a Benchmade for my EDC, but I think I'll get my Dad a Protech sometime if he doesn't get himself a Benchmade.

Perhaps it's for the best that carrying knives is illegal where you live then.

So I have a knife, will hopefully get a picture up later, however i'm offering a prize to anyone who can help me find what it's worth.. or decent information on it :D. The knife is a Bowie knife and it has a picture of a picture of John Wayne across the actual blade itself. Haven't been able to find it anywhere. Apparently it was a limited edition/official bowie knife.

Really hoping someone can help me with this ^

Really :P? no one? I was going to throw a GasMask if someone could help find anything about this knife haha. Trying to upload a pictures a pain in the ass though. But as said. It has a picture of john wayne and then some other stuff on the blade itself.

Ironically, in modern-day Texas, the state Jim Bowie died defending, the carrying of a Bowie knife "on or about one's person" is specifically prohibited under state law.

My only Benchmade is a BM32 that I got on liquidation at Sportsman's Warehouse. Still payed way more than I should have for a "toy", but I couldn't pass up the deal on a nice Benchmade bali  :))

i had this benchmade (well, the one that was also partly serrated). It was awesome, and after some use the open/close mechanism was butter smooth. But, the black coating came off REALLY fast. I ended up returning it and buying a thule roof rack system.

You do know you could've sent it off to Benchmade and had it replaced for a low cost, right? I believe you could have even asked them to swap it out for a satin blade, instead, which would not have had the black coating to wear off.

Meh. Wasting my time and money. Next time I'll go with one without the coating. Plus I've gotten more use out of the rack I got.

To all the knife collectors...

Do you have lots of things to cut everyday?

besides bread

...Ourselves? Nah, we don't really have any more uses for them than ordinary folk, as much as we try to replace a pair of scissors with our tactical knife, a box cutter with our tactical knife and a hammer with the butt-end of our tactical knife. It ends up looking silly after a while if you have company, especially if you're quick on the draw and your hands shake / eyebrow twitches.

Picked it up online at bass pro for free, got a gift card from my dad. Sweet.

Nice! Was looking at the S&W S&R...
It's like a KBar, but cheaper (half the price around here) and the hand-guard is actually placed in the correct direction (for combat knife) on the S&W.

I've got the Classic:

Lots of good knives here, but is that all anybody has? Where are the swords? Polearms?

No pictures yet, but I figured I'd stop in and let you guys know what I have (and have had).

My first good blade was a Strider Knife, fixed blade. It was a deployment gift from my dad (at my request) and served me very, very well. Sturdy blade, that.
I'm sure I can find an old pic.

My second (after selling the Strider, since I didn't need it) was a William Henry mammoth scale Spearpoint folder with an opal set in the thumb stud.
I loved that little knife with all of my heart. It was my everyday carry for about a year and a half, with a little leather sheath I wore inside my pocket, with the leather thong from the knife, with mammoth ivory beads hanging out of my pocket. My God. One day, after getting out of my car, I checked my pocket, and the leather sheath was in place, sans knife. I cried big blubbery baby tears, and searched for days. It wasn't in my car. In any spot I'd parked in that entire week, wasn't in the house. Nowhere to be found. I've since moved, so unless it's packed away in my household goods (which are in storage) than there's not a chance in hell I'll ever see it again.

Now, swords is an area I'm a bit of an enthusiast. I've always been interested in swords, and have collected military military blades for years (not an extensive collection) but I work at the Minnesota Renaissance festival (or, did before I joined the Army, back when I was too young to actually buy a sword, legally) and I'm now putting together a family costume for my wife, myself and my daughter. The idea is that we're Irish dignitaries from the early 1400s, a brief time of peace (not even lasting a generation) between England and Ireland. So our family were chosen to be dignitaries for our cunning, and our combat prowess (our sigil is the Fox) so we are dressed as nobles, in all the finest heavy wools, and armed to the goddamn teeth. The plan is for our 5 year old to be carrying a fake (though very very real looking) shortsword even.

That being said, I'm currently getting a pair of custom arming swords made up. The blades are from the Albion shop. They'll be shipped off to Ernie at Yeshua's Sword for a hilt and pommel, then shipped off to Sarge at Odinblade to be fitted for scabbard cores.
Then both swords (minus grip) and scabbards (minus leatherwork) will come to me for grip and scabbard leatherwork.

I'm currently finishing a scabbard for an Albion Knightly blade (Which I will be selling as a pair in the coming weeks), and it was a rousing success (my first scabbard!) so I actually plan on offering at-cost scabbard making once I get back to MN.
So if you have a sword you want to dress up with a nice (relatively) scabbard, hit me up. When I start doing this, it'll be at cost of materials, which should be relatively low.

Is that legal in Austria? I know that in Canada, if you chop off a colleague's hands, it's sort of ... illegal.

Nothing is illegal as long as the police don't find out!

I like this man's thinking.  Totally correct, what the pigs don't know won't hurt them  :thumb: .  Maybe if you live in a highly built up area you may get noticed by the local law for some reason and maybe get caught but out in non-built up areas, everything's safe and easy.

I could never live with everyone else around me poking their noses over the fence to purve on what I'm doing, better to have the nearest neighbour about 4 kms away so that nobody knows what you're up to.  After all your home is your palace and you should never allow curious mutts anywhere near you.

Oh love iri's axe, just make sure it's razor sharp because you never know when you might need to use it.  Perfect for meat stripping and cadaver separation  ;) .

Wow, neither the next supermarket nor my work is more than 2km away from where I live...

The glory of living in such a desolate, large place about the same size as the United States but only having around 23 million convicts trapped within it's borders  ;D .

Although here in Perth land prices have sky rocketed to absurd levels, because when I bought my block of land (7.5 acres) back in 1996 it had cost me $29,000AUD.  Now that same block size sells for over $2.200 000AUD.  Stupid crazy prices, that only wealthy, corrupt politicians and business people could afford now.

Yeah my superannuation is nearly half that so I'll retire with some moolah when old age hits me.  I just don't see the need for that much money, really how much more would you need to enjoy life here in this place?

Always have land because without it you have nothing in this world.

on topic: my axe is sharp enough to do what's it intended for: cutting wood when i'm on a forest trip.
in case someone breaks into my apartment (0.00001% probability), i have a razor sharp 60cm machete there.
in case something bad happens with me on the street, i have a disposable folder.

Just a personal preference. If any other reason is given, it would simply start yet another massive "shape vs ulility" debate  :-\

I personally like drop-point and sheepsfoot blades.

I can safely say that now, after trying out my dad's Mini-Grip, I want one.

It really is a nice knife. Handle is much grippier than I thought, and the action is like no other.

Finally found the the time to take some pics of my knives

Ka-Bar

[attachimg=1]
[attachimg=2]

The well known "standard" combat knife...
Light, well balanced, good grip, I really like it!

Eickhorn KM2000

[attachimg=3]

German army combat knife..
I prefer the Ka-Bar as it feels lighter/swifter to me, also dat plastic handle.

Tops Knives Condor Alert

[attachimg=4]

Awesome outdoor/survival knife, check the reviews.

Gerber Mark II

[attachimg=5]

The well known dagger...
Looks nice, but it's only good for stabbing,
also it features a "slippery when wet" handle, doh!

Smith and Wesson M&P Gen. 2 "M.A.G.I.C." Folder

[attachimg=6]

One of the best EDC and concealed-carry self defense knifes imo.
It's cheap and the "M.A.G.I.C." open assist works very well,
you can even open it in reverse grip.

Fox Knives FX 479 Karambit

[attachimg=7]

Good quality folding karambit with Emerson wave hook.
Actually only good for concealed-carry self defense needs,
but with the right technique this thing can do very ugly things.

Smith and Wesson Black Ops "M.A.G.I.C." Folder

[attachimg=8]

Grippy handle scales...
Overall not as good as the M&P variant imo.

Benchmade Barrage

[attachimg=9]

Nice open assist folder...
Higher quality than the S&W, but more expensive.
Also thumb opening only (That's why I prefer the S&W for EDC/SD)

Benchmade Osborne (943)

[attachimg=10]

Nice quality folding knife, but it's a bit pricy imo.

The ones I see recommended the most are the "Lansky DeLuxe", the "Spyderco Sharpmaker" and the "Wicked Edge Precision"
I prefer to use handheld rods instead of stations, at the moment I use two Lansky diamond rods (coarse and fine)

Title: Re: Sharp Things - Knives, Swords, Bayonets and Axes - Pictures and discussion
Post by: Lanx on Fri, 25 April 2014, 08:04:09
the lansky system is like a hotdog on a stick, instead it's a wetstone on a stick. there are a few like this, a clamp that sticks to the back of the knife with guides and then the stone on a guide, to give the 22 or 30degree angle.

i got the smiths 3 in 1 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000N35D2E/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000N35D2E&linkCode=as2&tag=420usa-20) instead of the spyderco

mainly cuz it was 1/3 the price and to see if i could do the spyderco way. apparently a few ppl have difficulty using it, i don't see how, just keep the knife straight and slide it down. the smith has shorter cermanic sticks than the spyderco and i can see why the spyderco sharpmaker is more preferred cuz of this (more travel).

however what i liked more was the diamond slab in the smiths, it really "bit" into the knife, so that's where i'm coming from, and for that i want a slab instead of the stone on a stick, cuz that's too annoying to attaching something to the back of the knife and then try to sharpen.

Decided to take some more pictures...
This time, to make iri happy, with different gloves/stuff:

Smith and Wesson M&P 1S Folder

Similar to the SWMP5 folder I posted, but less good!
- Good open-assist feature
- Thumb-stud not useable
- Flipper not ergonomic
- Too small for me

Smith and Wesson M&P 2 Folder

More or less like the SWMP1 above...
- Good open-assist feature
- Thumb-stud not useable
- Flipper not ergonomic
- Too small for me

Smith and Wesson M&P 3B Folder

Again, kinda like the SWMP1/2
- Good open-assist feature
- Downward angled blade
- Thumb-stud unusable
- Flipper not ergonomic
- Too small for me

Smith and Wesson M&P 5LS Folder

My favorite version of these knifes...
- Same good open-assist feature
- Thumb-stud is easily to use
- Flipper is easily to use
- Sturdier construction
- Good size

Smith and Wesson M&P 6S Folder

Imo a step back from the SWMP5!
- Same good open-assist feature
- Less sturdy construction
- Grippy but tacky scales
- No glass-breaker
- Smaller size

Smith and Wesson M&P 1/2/3 comparison

They more or less the same except for blade-shape and small details.

Smith and Wesson M&P 1/2/3/5/6

Shows the size difference between SWMP 1/2/3 and SWMP 5/6.

MTech USMC Folder

Cheap but ok folder...
- Relatively big
- Coated blade
- G10 scales

Böker Magnum Ring-O

Looks interesting/nice,
but that's it...

MTech 670 Karambit

Nice cheap small karambit,
good bang for the buck,
the sheath sucks tho.

so for the sharpening, i got a worksharp, which is basically a band grinder. it re-profiles knives great and gives a nice razer edge. i can cut paper and make squiggly lines easly and shave my arm hair.

so now i'm deciding between other hand sharpening systems (cuz why not)

i'm gonna get a edge pro clone

i'm gonna use some inventiveness i thought of overnight, i always wanted to get the magnetized strip and hang my knives that way, but since i'm renting, i'm not gonna drill into tile for obvious reasons, to hang that.

but i'm gonna use the same idea and hot glue the super strong magnets to the underside of the edge pro clone.

i decided against these types of systems
(http://www.egullet.com/imgs/egci/sharpen/sharpen7.jpg)

either lansky/gatco or dmt, mainly b/c i think i'll just annoyed screwing in the knife to the clamp, and then holding it in some obtuse claw like way.

Also thumb opening only (That's why I prefer the S&W for EDC/SD)

Benchmade Osborne (943)

(Attachment Link)

Nice quality folding knife, but it's a bit pricy imo.

Man you've got some ****ing awesome knives dude! Great collection.

Speaking of sharp things.....I'd better fix and sharpen the blades on my mower in time for spring.

Finally found the the time to take some pics of my knives

Ka-Bar

(Attachment Link)
(Attachment Link)

The well known "standard" combat knife...
Light, well balanced, good grip, I really like it!

Eickhorn KM2000

(Attachment Link)

German army combat knife..
I prefer the Ka-Bar as it feels lighter/swifter to me, also dat plastic handle.

Tops Knives Condor Alert

(Attachment Link)

Awesome outdoor/survival knife, check the reviews.

Gerber Mark II

(Attachment Link)

The well known dagger...
Looks nice, but it's only good for stabbing,
also it features a "slippery when wet" handle, doh!

Smith and Wesson M&P Gen. 2 "M.A.G.I.C." Folder

(Attachment Link)

One of the best EDC and concealed-carry self defense knifes imo.
It's cheap and the "M.A.G.I.C." open assist works very well,
you can even open it in reverse grip.

Fox Knives FX 479 Karambit

(Attachment Link)

Good quality folding karambit with Emerson wave hook.
Actually only good for concealed-carry self defense needs,
but with the right technique this thing can do very ugly things.

Smith and Wesson Black Ops "M.A.G.I.C." Folder

(Attachment Link)

Grippy handle scales...
Overall not as good as the M&P variant imo.

Benchmade Barrage

(Attachment Link)

Nice open assist folder...
Higher quality than the S&W, but more expensive.
Also thumb opening only (That's why I prefer the S&W for EDC/SD)

Benchmade Osborne (943)

(Attachment Link)

Nice quality folding knife, but it's a bit pricy imo.

Man you've got some ****ing awesome knives dude! Great collection.

Thanks!
I Will post more if I find the time to take pictures :)

so i got the edge pro clone, and immediately went to hot glue the rare earth magnets to the bottom, i noticed that i loose alot of magnetic sticky because of the plastic in between so i then proceeded to drill out enough plastic so that the magnets actually touch the knife (theres a lay of tape, i took pics)

took a few mins, one thing i had an issue with since i'm hot gluing a big hunk of metal, the hot glue dried almost instantly since it's like a big ass heat sink, so i had to try to put glue on plastic first, just not a lot of room to work with.

after that was done, it was strong enough to hold up (vertically, like you hang knives on the magnetic strip on a wall) a 8" chefs knife and even a meat cleaver, so yea this ain't moving no where.

the stones that come with it, i guess are alright, even the very fine 1500 grit took off ALOT of metal, it was dandruff.

anyway the edge is even finer, i can slice through paper easily and it's easier to shave my arm.

next i'm gonna gerry rig a way to put DMT stones on the edge pro, already order the extra extra fine dmt stone. oh the rods wouldn't move in nicely, i'm guessing cuz it's a cheap chinese clone, but dab of seseme oil (it has to be asian oil, smells better) and now it glides on air.

From forums thats how they say its sharp, if it cuts paper from heel to tip and can shave man arms.

heres the final mod, as you see it is holding up a pairing knife, with earth magnets, and i've modified it so that it accepts 4in dmt aligner diamond stones (i only have the extra extra fine for now)

these are the 6 earth magnets
(http://i.imgur.com/cId3q8c.jpg)

heres the hole drill out, just a few drill presses and swoosh around to clear out plastic
(http://i.imgur.com/BVN3xnm.jpg)

here it is holding up a meat cleaver, it's really strong, magnetized

just got the dmt deluxe set, so now i have diamond 4in stones in course/fine/extra fine/extra extra fine.

they take off tons of metal too. i also bought this kick ass 10$ pearing knife off amazon, in japanese style.

japanese fruit knife (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00200L8VS/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00200L8VS&linkCode=as2&tag=420usa-20&linkId=KV4CXXQKUIC24JQL)

i like that it has a sheath, i'mma gonna buy 5 more and use them as steak knives. currently i have the steak knives that are super huge, you find in steak houses, but they're serrated and i wanna get away from serrated knives. (it makes the steak look horrible once you cut it up)

Again some more pictures...
This time, as iri didn't respond, with the gloves of the 1st series:

Smith and Wesson M&P 4 Folder

Similar to the SWMP5 folder I posted, but I like it less...
- Good open-assist feature
- Thumb-stud useable
- Flipper is ergonomic
- Safety lock and general shape imo less good than on the v5

Schrade SCHA4B Folder

Made by the same OEM as the SWMP series...
- Good "MAGIC" open-assist feature
- Thumb-stud kinda useable
- Flipper kinda ergonomic
- Nice shape and look

GANZO G712 Folder

Chinese folding knife with Axis-Lock...
- Interesting look and shape (stolen from Benchmade)
- Pretty good quality, very good bang for the buck
- Opening via Axis-Lock is less smooth than on Benchmade's
- No open-assist

Navy K-620 Folder

Chinese folding knife with Back-Lock...
- Interesting look and shape
- Good bang for the buck
- No open-assist

Kershaw Cryo Tanto Blackwash (1555TBW) Folder

Small open-assist folder with Frame-Lock...
- Nice finish
- Good build quality
- Safe use (Frame-Lock and flipper prevents closing)

Kershaw Cryo II (1556TI)

Big open-assist folder with Frame-Lock...
- Good build quality
- Safe use (Frame-Lock and flipper prevents closing)

Katz Knives 6 1/2" Alley Kat (KZAK6006)

Smaller version of the Alley Kat, very nice combat knife...
- Light and balanced
- Grippy handle
- Pricey

Ontario Knifes EOD Ranger Karambit

Good quality and sturdy karambit...
- Perhaps a bit heavy
- Weird edge
- Pricey

FOX Knives Folding Karambit FX-599

Smaller and improved brother of the FX-479 I posted earlier...
- Good build quality
- Improved Emerson wave/hook

FX-479 -VS- FX-599

As you can see the FX-599 has a much sharper/pointier hook,
this results in a much better draw -> open success rate...

No name / Handmade Karambits

Not bad, but quality and finish could be better!
- Cheap but useable
- Sluggish craftmanship

Colt Mini Karambit (CT646)

POS mini Karambit, I hate it!
- So small that you have to use your middle finger instead of your index finger for the hole
- Finger-hole too small for most fingers (I'm 180cm/75kg with glove size 9 and it won't work)
- Supposed to be a neck knife but can't be drawn in that way (ball-chain necklace breaks, knife get's stuck in the sheath)

Ontario Knifes EOD Ranger Karambit

Show Image
(http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/EOD_Ranger.jpg)

Good quality and sturdy karambit...
- Perhaps a bit heavy
- Pricey

Should have mentioned that the factory edge is weird...
It has a very steep angle, needs re-profiling to work as a karambit (sweep cuts / slashing).
The good thing, while doing this you could also profile the false edge on the back, something I might do soon :)

this spring i was cycling on a narrow street when a parked car driver opened her door into me. i flew over the handlebars in a spectacular manner and hurt a knuckle. it took it 1.5 months to recover. since then i decided to not cycle on the roads any more and also to buy gloves with knuckle protection. had visited quite a few motorcycle gear shops and then bought those in a tourist shop for ~18 euros.

After using a larger Benchmade as an EDC for some time I switched the Kershaw Chive and fell in love with the size.  It is small but fits so well in that small pocket in jeans, and is more than sufficient for what I use it for.  Then, I caught the collectors bug.

[attachimg=1]

It is surpising how different these 3 feel.  The rainbow one is definitely the heaviest most sold build with the snappiest assist.

I've always found the Rainbow Ken Onion Kershaws to be pretty cute. That said, I love my Benchmade too much, and handle size matters to me. I could not carry around a 1.75" knife, because I don't really do 3-fingered grip knives (except when I'm in places where that's all I can carry). A 3-inch knife is really about the smallest I can carry comfortably.

i recently bought an old hickory paring knife, i wanted to see how i'd like 1095 steel (high carbon, good edge retention, horrible rust)

Amazon.com : Ontario Knife Co. 5-Piece Old Hickory Knife Set 705 : Hunting Knives : Sports  Outdoors (http://"http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000M2R6C6/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B000M2R6C6&linkCode=as2&tag=420usa-20&linkId=RWLJ43NY7SX2Z2HK")

when i got it, it was pretty dull, i mean if i forced it at the right angle i could cut paper, but i mean come on. i spent half an hour re-profiling it, with just a x-coarse diamond stone it was sharper, but i did change the angle, i went all the way to the 10k stone, and now it cuts newspaper easily, it actually feels nice.

i needed a new paring knife since i'm dehydrating lots of peaches now, i hope it won't leave a "metallic" taste.

I really like it a lot. Before I got it I thought I might switch out the Micarta handles for G10 but they are sooo comfortable. Hard to describe. Smooth and soft but still grippy. The G10 handles on my Benchmade Osborne feel harsh and sharp by comparison.

Got a few goodies today from Knife Center. The pouch for my Esee 4 (it's designed for the 5/6, but fits fine) was my main reason for the order. But they had this Alfa Benetti and Schrade Water Rat for dirt cheap. Each under $15. Both made in China, but quality seems reasonable.

Very nice  :thumb:

I have been trying to find a Paramilitary2 with black handle, and satin blade.  It seems like they are always out of stock everywhere.

I got to use a "Fällkniven F1" a few days ago, it was really cool. kind of want one now just cause how nice it feels in the hand and how well-made it felt. but I don't really know anything about non-kitchen knives and no idea why I would use one...
they're made fairly locally from where I'm born in Sweden too, which is nice.

Fallkniven are great knives. Two downsides: Their short blades are massively thick (http://i.imgur.com/2PYx6uL.jpg) (disregard the handle), and they're quite expensive. I have an EnZo Trapper which is very similar geometry-wise with a thinner blade, you might wanna look at those as well. (https://www.brisa.fi/portal/index.php?option=com_oscommerce&osMod=index&cPath=119) You can get a kit with N690 steel for 80€!

I really wanna get one of these... no real reason except that they're cool.

LionSteel TiDust (https://www.lionsteel.it/n/en/product/1704/progetto_tidust)

a bit expensive, but really unique... Made in Italy, of course.

So, after a long break I finally continue...

Cold Steel Code 4

(http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/Cold Steel - Code4-02.jpg)
(http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/Cold Steel - Code4-03.jpg)

My favorite non auto/assisted folder, I love it!
- Great build quality
- Feels very solid
- Opens very easily
- Very strong locking mechanism
- Lock not as "dirtproof" as frame or liner locks

Cold Steel Recon 1 (Rev.2) -vs- Code 4

(http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/Cold Steel -Code4-Recon1_02.jpg)
(http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/Cold Steel -Code4-Recon1_04.jpg)

The ancestor of the Code 4...
- Grippy G10 scales instead of smooth aluminum
- Coating on the blade will wear fast
- Otherwise similar to the Code 4

Fox Knives - Kuku Hanuman Karambit

(http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/Fox Kuku Hanuman 01.jpg)
(http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/Fox Kuku Hanuman 02.jpg)

- Good fit/shape
- Somewhat expensive

Boker AK-74 Automatic Folder

(http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/Boker AK-74 Automatic Knife 01.jpg)
(http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/Boker AK-74 Automatic Knife 02.jpg)
(http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/Boker AK-74 Automatic Knife 03.jpg)
(http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/Boker AK-74 Automatic Knife 04.jpg)
(http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/Boker AK-74 Automatic Knife 05.jpg)
(http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/Boker AK-74 Automatic Knife 06.jpg)

- Decent build quality
- Affordable
- Many variations
- Opening could be snappier

EDC Gear - Harpoon

Nice addition to any survival/bugout bag...
- Can be used as knife as well as harpoon/spear tip
- Small, light and affordable

Boker Plus Rampage

(http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/Boker Plus Rampage 01.jpg)
(http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/Boker Plus Rampage 02.jpg)

- Interesting blade-shape
- Not so good size/weight ratio
- I don't like the handle scales, might change em

Boker Mini Slik Neck Knife

(http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/Boker Mini Slik Knife 01.jpg)
(http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/Boker Mini Slik Knife 02.jpg)

Don't like it, probably gonna sell it soon...
- Interesting small neck knife
- Titanium handle scales

And more...

Browning Black Label - Strike Force

(http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/Browning-Black Label Strike Force-01.jpg)
(http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/Browning-Black Label Strike Force-02.jpg)

Nice fusion of a karambit and a trench-knife...
- Nice sheath
- Good ergonomics
- In difference to conventional karambits it's bladeshape allows stabbing
- In difference to a trench-knife your hand is not trapped in brass-knuckles
- If it would be made of better steel it would be my favorite "combat" knives

BlackField RAPTOR Karambit

(http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/BlackField RAPTOR Karambit 01.jpg)
(http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/BlackField RAPTOR Karambit 02.jpg)

Don't like it, gonna sell it soon...
- Bad ergonomics
- Bad balance

Schrade SCHF11 Re-Curve Tanto

(http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/Schrade SCHF11 Re-Curve Tanto 02.jpg)

- Solid and simple outdoor knife
- There are better and/or cheaper options out there

Spyderco Mini Folders - Grasshopper / Honeybee / Bug

(http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/Spyderco-Grasshopper-Honeybee-Bug 01.jpg)
(http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/Spyderco-Grasshopper-Honeybee-Bug 02.jpg)
(http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/Spyderco-Grasshopper-Honeybee-Bug 03.jpg)

- Will fit in your wallet
- More of a gimmick/collectors item, but still nice as a backup EDC

Kershaw Cryo I -vs- Cryo II

(http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/Kershaw CryoComp01.jpg)
(http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/Kershaw CryoComp03.jpg)
(http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/Kershaw CryoComp02.jpg)

My favorite assisted EDC knives...
- Great price / quality ratio
- Safe use (Frame-Lock and flipper prevents closing)

Kershaw Shallot - Stainless / Tungsten DLC Black

(http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/Kershaw Shallot Silver .jpg)
(http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/Kershaw Black Shallot Knife with Tungsten DLC Black coating.jpg)

- Interesting blade-shape
- Good price / quality ratio
- Not happy with it's ergonomics
- Not as nice as the Cryo I or Cryo II

Kershaw Leek - Blackwash

(http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/Kershaw LEEK Blackwash.jpg)

- Good price / quality ratio
- Not happy with it's size/shape/ergonomics

Kershaw Zing

(http://soulhunters-crappy-website.com/misc/Kershaw Zing.jpg)

- Not sure on the build quality
- Prefer it's shape/ergonomics over the Leek

Baking sheet...do you mean like foil or the thicker metal that you put cookies on (that's not very shiney)?

The metal thing, mine is made of uncoated steel, more or less matte silver...
A piece of white or grey cardboard will do the same, it's just that I took the pictures on my kitchen table and it was the closest thing that worked ^^;

I always liked Hinderers, but like with ZT's  most of them are to heavy/bulky for my personal liking.

All these knives are too clean.

Anyone use some for line-handling or construction instead of paperweights?

:P

Snagged another 3in XM-18

Spanto grind with Translucent Green G10 scale.  It looks white in the pictures, but it does have a slight greenish tint to it in person.

Got my wife's mini grip with s30v from Benchmade's custom order service last week.

Nice XM-18 collection.
Have any more pics of that 3in?

I got four 3inchers. Two slicers, one wharny,  and one spanto,  but I don't have all the decked out hardware like you.
Just trying to find a 3in spearpoint now.

Title: The Knife Thread!
Post by: Blaise170 on Fri, 08 June 2018, 12:47:59
For the last few years I have been slowly building a collection of knives. Most of them are pretty generic but I also have a few which I use a lot and that I really like having. I actually started my collection with a bayonet and a dagger, but both of these are now permanently lost (I have a $50 bounty on them for anyone who can retrieve these, more details below).

To start, I have numerous folding knives, but most of them are pretty generic. I do have several that I love though, including a black Spyderco Delica, a yellow Spyderco Dragonfly H1 Serrated, and a Twin Suns Planetary knife. The Twin Suns knife isn't very functional but I thought it looked sick and so I mostly just have it as a display. I also recently joined the buy on Massdrop for the Spyderco Native Blue Box, so hopefully I get something nice there.

For fixed blades, I primarily use a CRKT Acquisition although I have a couple of others too. I used to have a Romanian AK bayonet and a German Korium Solingen Claw dagger that I sent into the Sharpening Shack to get refinished since the years had taken their toll on them. The Sharpening Shack has been emailing me for the last year that they will send them back to me "soon" and they keep magically never showing up. I'll give anyone who lives near Chula Vista, CA a bounty of $50 if you can go to their location and retrieve them for me.

Well played actually useful knives, sir. Gyuto, kensaki/kiritsuke yanagi, deba, and looks like a double bevel kodeba or ajikiri. Pretty much all you need for any prep.
I've been into Japanese handmade kitchen knives since 2007, and used to have a lot more.

Sushi chef ?

Not too often sushi (only one of those is a dedicated sashimi knife), but just being overprepared for any kind of kitchen prep. Breaking down whole fish or birds etc. Making extra clean slices of whatever.

It's like keyboards. You only really need 1, and a membrane keyboard would work just fine for getting text onto the screen. But that isn't how we roll. Once you know, it's like the difference between a custom board you made with lubed everything vs a brand name GamerBoi membrane board with teh RGBs.

Whoa I just found this. Seems like a nice time to do one of those "state of the collection things". The collection had an s90v Shirogorov Hati and a Flytanium paramilitary 2 but I trimmed it down at the end of last year to fund some proto work and the poly 910 so I just had the 0630 and the 0450 since those were the only ones I had used, but I was offered an ambassador position with ZT at the beginning of this year so the collection has been kinda growing again in the last few months.

Would love it if ZT would upgrade the 0450 steel to CMP 20cv or M390.
The 0450 is still one of my favorite knives.
