Keycap Boxs
« on: Sat, 12 January 2013, 11:21:57 »
Hi all :),

Any idea where you can get boxs for your keycaps? I've been seeing a few of them posted in the classifieds section with keycaps in all dem little boxs.  I need to tidy my collection!

Thanks,
Grey

The Container Store

Are you talking about one of their plastic shoeboxes? Is that what you use?

I got a fish tackle box from Wal-Mart for like $7, it holds and separates all my keycaps just fine.

Another alternative to storing a keycap set are those plastic containers that you get dice in. I found some today at the Container Store. They're called Amac Boxes and they're pretty cheap.

The large ones can hold the 87 key set and the small ones are just large enough for the 17 keys in the number pad. They're probably really nice for extra modifier sets or a tsangan kit as well.

For those who are curious, the caps in the containers are the stock ninja caps from my Filco.

I grabbed it from Vortex's Facepile page. It's a White PBT Lasered set.

What ever box you think you need, get one twice as big. I thought I would only need one medium sized box. However I bought another one the next week because it just wasn't big enough.

Wish I knew.  The only place I've ever seen them is wrapped around new Topre sets and new Ducky sets.

I went to the dollar store and bought a stack of plastic containers.  All the storage you could ever need.

I don't have a 7x Spacebar. I can measure the inside of the box or, if you want to be patient, I can take a picture when I'm at the Chicago meet. I do have 6.25x Spacebars if that would help you.

That'll be fine. It'll give some point of reference. When you put the caps in, did you have to arrange them to make them fit or can you just dump them in willy nilly?

I arranged them with the legends down. The top adds more volume. Without it, you get to balance caps if you just dump them in. Luckily the arranging doesn't need to be anything special. I'll snap a pic of what I mean later.

Yeah, I like the idea, but I don't know that I want to have to arrange them every time I want to put them in a box. Though it wouldn't be too bad, I suppose. What was the cost per box?

It's not horrible to organize it, and it makes arranging them nice. I'll snap a pic of what we talked about above and then how I have my caps organized later. And the price? I think its like $1.50? Definitely less than $2.

Oh, and with those containers, if you buy more than 1, you can stack them on top of each other if you want one huge container with like 21 layers or something rofl.

I get very particular with cases. For some reason, I can't bring myself to think that a case like the one cobraj posted, which has a good amount of depth when I only intend for it to hold a cap, is a good idea. :|

CPTBadAss turned me on to the clear Amac Boxes from The Container Store and they work really well. You have to sort them when you switch keys but it's a really compact solution that works well. Below are two images to help illustrate and more details can be found in the description on Flickr.

Hope that helps!

Haha. Idk. I bought it more for keycap sets, as I always buy blanks.. So don't want to sit there spending all my time organise using into rows.

I have a smaller container as well (linked before a lot earlier) but I have space in the bigger one.. So just using that now :)

Can you buy those empty from anywhere?

Aren't those the lasered cardboard boxes one of the korean  forums did once?

Either that, or it's the (most likely) lasered cardboard material topre uses for their fullsets.

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned signatue pastics' keycap display system: http://www.keycapsdirect.com/marketplace.php

I have all my keycaps currently in a USPS mailing box I had. They are sorted into baggies. Fullsets are generally in used bubble mailers I think I'll need to get something from thecontainerstore soon.

I just bought the 45 key one. While this would work perfect, it's far too expensive for full sets.

Agreed. I bought the small set just to try them out for a display project I had in mind, but they are way too expensive for a full set, not to mention not very flexible beyond 1x key caps.

The smaller one (#60380) is for 10-keys and the taller one (60420) fits a full set of alphas and modifers.

^^That orange gas mask!!! Glimpse into the future perhaps?

EDIT: or is it orange?

In the near future we will produce transparent gas mask .

the one you saw in the photo was only a prototype not finish yet.

Seems like it's supposed to be red...

I'm hoping for a nice blue or pink gas mask, hint hint martinyeah ;)

These are some nice cases, I'm ashamed that my keycaps don't live in such luxury

i will consider your suggestion.  :p

I stumbled upon this looking for something else this morning. I'm sure there might be something similar at a local store perhaps but thought it was a good example and gives an idea of whats available.

I have two of these:
http://www.amazon.com/Plano-23600-01-Stowaway-Adjustable-Dividers/dp/B000E39T50/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1373206049&sr=8-1&keywords=plano+3600

I can get them for about $3 locally

One is for loose caps and the other for parts/tools. Cap sets are kept in snack bags sorted by row and then thrown into sandwich bags

I guess plastic boxes or cardboard are ok if you can't run to a Brazilian mahogany cabinet :)

Where did you get those boxes?

From Cheap as Chips (a $2 shop in Australia).  You should be able to get something similar local from an office supplies store in the states.  Or look online for things like 'document storage case' etc.

Thanks Strafe,
I found some Plano boxes that look pretty close but the thinnest is 1 3/4 inches yours look thinner then that. I do like your idea of bending cardboard for the insert. I will use that.

I'll have to keep an eye out for those Strafe, pretty sure I've seen them around before!

Here's what I'm using, $6 from Bunnings (Home Depot in the US I guess) and they're great for full sets and switches. Other smaller parts go into some clear component boxes.

It's a good width!  If it's half-width it's too narrow, and full-width is too wide.

I just use plastic shopping bags to separate the sets, and keep them in a box.  That is a nice container though.

Good boxes, I found something similar in the UK, although for more than a$2. Tiger Brand Tuff Box, the slim version is 20mm deep which seems about right, they do other depths. A few sellers on eBay for them as well.

Another alternative to storing a keycap set are those plastic containers that you get dice in. I found some today at the Container Store. They're called Amac Boxes and they're pretty cheap.

Show Image

The large ones can hold the 87 key set and the small ones are just large enough for the 17 keys in the number pad. They're probably really nice for extra modifier sets or a tsangan kit as well.

For those who are curious, the caps in the containers are the stock ninja caps from my Filco.

These cost about $4.00 a piece though and you can't put a whole set in one.

It was more than that if you bought them at the container store we talked about. I looked! :(

Here's a link to a full set of 104 in the two boxes. These are the black on black PBT that TechKeys did as part of a pre-sale.

http://l.mashby.com/DfSJ

Hope that helps!

How much did you have to give for them? When I looked a think the smaller one was $2.97 and they were out of the bigger one.

The price tag on the bottom of my box says $1.79. Part number is 60420. Check this link for the sizing of the box.

Edit: Not sure what's going on with the search on their website so here is the product description from the table:
