From what I've heard there are only 2 of those so I'm guessing they were random drops from the sale

That was how I got mine. Traded it to someone so that they could complete a collection of every single key from that sale.

To me, the clack skull is the most iconic sculpt in the hobby. The design is simple and elegant, and I can't get enough of it. Also wanted to try and capture a color accurate photo for this guy ;)

They never really did it for me, but I do agree they are iconic and instantly grab your attention, especially depending on the color(s). What I do really appreciate about them is that the colors are picked to go with keysets. Even if they're not matched to a color in the actual keyset, the blend and tone of the color go well with a keyset if it carries the same muted or bright scheme.

I've only ever handled Topre and buckling spring iterations and found that the Topre version carried with it a very nice scoop at the top so as both to match the profile of the rest of the row as well as cusp the finger if you're actually using it. So it's actually useful as a key and aesthetically pleasing as an art piece.

Such odd realizations for such a simple design.

I appreciate how you rationalized / worded the appeal of the skulls.

With this being my favorite part -- it's so true! I've grown to appreciate Clack skulls a lot.

That's a fat lie. I have the same phone and it takes way better pictures than that, even indoors, where it is notoriously incapable of taking decent shots, but not that bad.

Here's a pic I just took. Check out the clarity:
