Mega Man dye subs?
« on: Wed, 15 February 2012, 20:20:46 »
I saw some of the Southpark and Starcraft dye subs keycaps floating around, and started to wonder how possible something like this would be. I threw the mock-up together pretty quick...I'm not sure how well pixels would translate with dye sublimation. A few notes:

1) Some characters ( namely Mega Man ) don't fill up the cap as well as others. Everything here is kept to scale as they would appear in game with the exception of the E-tank and the 1-up.

2) All characters are standing  at the same height, so their feet would appear to be at "ground level" if they were lined up.

3) These graphics aren't necessarily using the correct pallet, I just did this as a quick mock-up

4) Some of these graphics have a lot of white in them, and may need some sort of "glow" put around them to help them pop a bit. Examples are given.

My original thought was to put the stage select portraits on caps, but it seems to me that since those graphics are perfectly square, it would be difficult to center, and if it were even slightly off, it would look terrible.

See the Starcraft 2 League Keycap group buy for why this will never happen unless somebody does it through a shady company in China.

Or you could convince Capcom to license it.  Good luck!

That's how the Southpark and Starcraft dye subs happened, right?

Get it personally through imsto. It won't happen with SP.

Yes that is how the southpark and SC2 dyesubs were made.

I figured it was imsto that did those. I sent him an PM asking how well pixelated graphics like these would work with dye sub. Hopefully I'll hear back soon!

Have a look at Ragnorock's Nyancaps. It is pixelated. The outcome isn't too bad. But that's done by SP.

What about these?

He needs big pictures to do it. I gave him almost wallpaper size ones for most of mine.

Those are neat, but lose the nostalgia feeling you get with the originals. Not only that, you run into the problem of those being ( mostly ) square graphics, so even if they're slightly off, they end up looking bad.

Resolution isn't a problem with the old graphics - the images can be up-scaled as much as needed and still look crisp. Here's the hard  hat enemy blown up, for instance. ( the re-sized thumb-nail will appear fuzzy, but if you click for full size, the pixels are crisp again ) I really think keeping the graphics their original pixelated selves would be for the best.
