Looking to get Key Caps for Filco 87
« on: Fri, 24 August 2012, 11:14:57 »
I would like to get key caps for my Filco 87 which hold their texture and don't get shiny. Which key caps do you recommend?

PBTs. You can get full sets from qtan or feng.

PBT.  I started with a set of Ducky, that got moved to my work board when I got a set of green on dark grey thick PBT from imsto.

How do Double-shot ABS keysets compare to PBT keysets as far as wear and getting shiny?

Double shot or not, it's still ABS:  shiny happens

PBT will definitely take longer, it's a harder plastic

I don't mind ABS at all. PBT do hold their texture, but they also get dirty really quickly. It's like they are cleaning your fingertips. Even if you wash your hands before keyboarding. If they collect any dust at all, you will forever be cleaning your PBT caps.

Plus you can get really cool doubleshot sets in ABS. Cherry Corp doubleshots are thick and nice to type on. Doubleshots from SP (made for the group buys) aren't as nice, but the designs are very cool.

Dirty?  I've never had that issue with mine.  On the other hand some of the lasered legends on my Ducky set *look* dirty.  I'm not sure if that's not enough laser or too much.

Harder and more corrosion resistant! (POM is another option, but all the POM I've seen is pretty smooth to begin, so PBT wins again)

This has not been my experience. For example, my unicomp has never been cleaned, and I've typed on it every day since Dec. 2010. My SP PBT keycaps got a little dirty, but that's because it addition to never cleaning it, I often ate over it, and it's right under my head, so dandruff happens. This has also been the case with my current ABS keyboard.

Thick doubleshot ABS plastic looks nice, but it' can't beat PBT in feel. I also contend that Dyesub PBT legends can be easily made not blurry. Portal round1 is a case in point.

Go PBT.

If PBT is superior, why are all these group buys for key caps in double shot ABS instead of PBT?

As far as I know, you can't double-shoot PBT. Doubleshot ABS still has it's place with lighter legended keycaps. I still think that dyesub has a longer theoretical lifespan, due to better wear resistance. It also doesn't get shiny as fast. There's tons of reasons to go PBT.

Also, PBT is cheaper than (most) ABS keycaps. Unicomp full printed sets are only $25.
