Title: The SmallFry KB, AKA jdcarpe loves 40%
Post by: jdcarpe on Fri, 16 August 2013, 11:34:05
This is where I show you my 40% design. I haven't finished this lovely little keyboard, yet, but here is what I have so far. :D

First build, thanks to TheFlyingRaccoon!:

On my first attempt, the metal shop bent the "legs" up instead of down, so the layout was reversed. I decided to go ahead with it, and direct wire the thing.

Wait, but those are DSA Retro caps on there, aren't they? Yes, they certainly are. That's right, when I placed my order during matt3o's (and samwisekoi's) DSA Retro GB, I specifically ordered the exact keycap blanks I would need for this 40% keyboard of mine.

This is how my first attempt it would look in its correct form:

Nice, eh?

Layered stainless steel case:

All credit for the case design idea goes to matt3o. This is my tiny homage to his Steel Beauty.

Original plate idea for this design:

Layout:

I still need to work on the function layers for this layout, to include numbers, punctuation, etc.

Alternate layout:

PCB:

What?!?! Yes.   :))

I am forever indebted to Regack for designing this PCB for me. Thank you so much, Regack.

As you can see from the front silkscreen, credit is also due to Dox, bpiphany, and komar007. I was inspired by each of them to make my own design.

Also, a nod to kmiller8, who independently came up with an idea for a 40% keyboard right about the same time I had my idea. He even incorporated my design's elements into his PCB brainstorming session.  :thumb:

This keyboard is hereby named the SmallFry Keyboard, in honor of our friend.

Keycap stuff:

Jdcarpe, can you post the keycaps needed specifically for the 40%, and add that info to the OP. I'd like them to be added to every future GB.

Sure.

Row 2: 1u Esc, 1u Del or Backspace
Row 3: 1.25u Tab, 1.75u Return or Enter
Row 4: 1.75u Shift, 1.25u Shift, 1u Fn
Row 4 (SA Row 3): 1.25u Ctrl, 1u Win or Del, 1u Alt; optional layout: 1.25u >., 1.25u ?/

Not a fan of lower than TKL usually, but this little thing has got something about it that's really appealing.

Dat fullsize space bar though

Nothing is complete, good sir. It was just time to share this with the community.

Also, the original plate you saw was destroyed during the initial bending process/testing. :( This bent plate was a result of a second run, made by the local metals shop. :)

Well that's suitably mind blowing. I'm still trying to visualize how small that is, even with the help of a ruler.

This would be great with a slim sturdy case. It would be great if the case was designed with a higher lip around the sides to protect the keys during transportation. And a custom top part of the car can be made to protect the keys and switches during transport.

Your comment comes off as rude. I'm trying to showcase my work on this new design, while paying tribute to my friend. I never even mentioned anything about selling anything.

In fact, I'm not really interested in making money here. That's why I'm not a vendor. Maybe one day I can fulfill my dream of making a living by designing and producing keyboards, but for now it is simply a hobby, and this community is my haven and source of recreation.

SmallFry was my friend, and I don't think he would have objected to my naming this keyboard project in his honor.

This made me smile, because I know the story of how SmallFry got his moniker. Others who are "in the know" would probably know what I mean.

For everyone interested in making this a reality, I am currently in the middle of the GH60 GB, so this will probably have to wait a bit. I would also like to see the Alps TKL happen. But if someone else wants to take the reins and make moves, I would be willing to assist with what I have so far.

would like to do a run of these pcbs and a second run of gh60 pcbs at the same time, but this one is going to need some slight modification for pick and placed diodes and controller. also i'd like to unify the controller design with the gh60 so that the bom is the same (it is basically just a teensy OG).

this should keep costs down. i imagine the_beast's guy will do the steel, and i'm not sure how he scales at the moment. will chat about this with folks tomorrow.

That would be awesome. The solder pads for the diodes are a just bit too small as the PCB exists today, but I didn't want to bug Regack with that. But pick-and-place with presoldered diodes and controller would definitely be the way to go for a GB-sized run.

Also, if The_Beast's guy doesn't work out for plates, WFD's guy can surely take an order if there is any kind of volume. We would just need to work up some kind of case design before plate dimensions are finalized. There are currently no holes in the PCB for standoff mounting (nor for PCB-mount stabs). :)

Post by: mkawa on Fri, 16 August 2013, 22:39:34
if we do a large enough run we could actually bring IMS (industrial metal supply) in. IMS is local to both WFD and i (actually about halfway between the two of us) and has and extremely nice 6-axis laser that can be used to bevel, chamfer and otherwise make this case work as cleanly as possible on very hard, very high strength alloys for a ridiculously solid feel to the board, despite its small size.

jdcarpe, do you know how regack feels about open sourcing his pcb design? (ugh, we really do need this geekhack OS-DEVICE license written yesterday...)

While I don't think I could ever find myself using one of these for actual typing, my god, does this concept look cool as hell!
I wouldn't mind getting one of these just to sit on my desk to look pretty  :)).

Perhaps for numbers and function keys, you could could replace the Windows Key as an Fn and
have Fn+(ASDF...Enter) as numbers (1-0) and Fn+(Esc...Del) as F1-F12?
Or maybe even a numpad-esque Fn layer (QWE, ASD, ZXC). Just a thought  :p.

I am really excited if this goes into production. I like to either have a full size (or ErgoDox) or something as small as possible so it is easy to carry.

Interesting! Tho I don't see the reason to include the right shift key...
Most people use left shift anyway, and as space is rare on this layout having double-keys seems a bit "uneconomical".
If the right shift key gets ditched we could have a 1.25 FN key on the right and one more 1x1 key next to it (ie. for ",").

Just my 2 Cents :)

I use both shift keys. Maybe not the full length of the right shift key but I do use it  :)

Fair enough...
Still I think having one more punctuation key (and a bigger FN key, as you have to make heavy use of it with such a low number of keys) would be better than the "luxury" of a second shift key.

I'll be making room in my budget for this little guy.

Also, to add to the discussion, I make HEAVY use of my right shift key, using it almost primarily, since I can hold it and still make use of my left pinky, so I only lose the ability to use shift + punctuation, which seems a significantly more rare occurrence for me.

That being said, I've be happy seeing it shortened to make space for a hardwired comma.

This keyboard design makes me want a laptop, but one without a keyboard on it. I'm thinking like. a Monitor on a stand, with all of the hardware in the monitor, but built for portability. Battery life, the whole shebang. Essentially a laptop, but closer to the desktop/monitor combos, just intended for portability.

Does this exist? OR can we make it exist? Anybody know enough about hardware, monitors and the like to help me make this happen? I'm happy working on the design portion.

somebody PM me, I got **** in my head that needs someone a talking to

Very cool!

Let me expound I don't want to come off as spammy.

This is a very awesome project. I love that there are no stabilizers other than the keyboard. It's small yet very functional. And it's all ready to go no need for fancy cases etc.

You guys do some amazing things!! Can't wait to see more.  :thumb:

My SmallFry Keyboard mini build guide.
What you'll need:
Solder all the components on the back starting from smallest to largest. First the diodes, then the USB connector, then the Teensy.
Connect the Teensy to the PCB. The holes are labeled on the reverse side.
Solder the 300 ohm resister to the designated spot on the front of the PCB.
Install the stabilizer then mount four switches in the corners of the plate and solder them to the PCB.

Looks like you used too much solder on the switches (also looks like the pads weren't heated enough) and not enough solder on the diodes. My diodes always look like this:

Yes, the diodes aren't properly soldered. The problem is there aren't solder pads on the reverse side of the PCB so the solder will not stick/ flow through. Thanks for the help!

Ugh, I've been away so long...   I'm saddened to hear of SmallFry's passing but this is a nice remembrance!  I hope the PCB works out!

jdcarpe, do you know how regack feels about open sourcing his pcb design? (ugh, we really do need this geekhack OS-DEVICE license written yesterday...)

Everything I built I learned from others that came before me, so I’m fine with others using this as a basis for something else, tearing it apart to learn, or improving upon it, as long as JDCarpe is as well.    After all, it’s his design, I just drew some lines.

Funny thing is, when working on it, I never thought I could adjust to typing on something like this, but now that I see it being built, I want one too :D

Word on the street says that if you didn't have enough
heat to make the solder flow into/through the via,
then you didn't have enough heat to get a good bond.
Is your iron hot enough?  Did you keep it on the joint
long enough to get the pad and via wet? (with molten
solder of course...)

I'd hate to see this wonderful project of yours plagued
with a bunch of cold solder joints == intermittent issues...

My Hakko 936 was set at 400C the entire time and I held the tip to the solder points for a second or two before adding the solder. I think I'm doing everything right  :-[

Yeah, TheFlyingRaccoon didn't do anything wrong. The solder pads on the PCB are just slightly larger than the drill size, so there is very little there to hold any solder. That's actually went I sent these PCBs to him, because I was very frustrated trying to folder those diodes in, and he volunteered to have a go at it.

Using his technique, I was able to get another of the PCBs I had made filled with diodes.

Not your fault, by any means. That's what prototypes are for, right? I really truly appreciate the work you put into my little project that allowed it to become a realty.

I don't know if you have time to make any modifications to the PCB, or if you would prefer to hand that of to someone else, but it seems there is some interest in seeing these made into production boards. That would most likely mean changing the controller to an onboard ATmega32U4 instead of the Teensy I specified, and diodes to SMT instead of thru hole. Also, I think people will want holes for PCB-mount switches and stabilizer, in case they prefer to build without a plate. Exactly what I had you remove from the early revisions. :D

That should be the files that jdcarpe and TheFlyingRaccoon are working from.  I don't think I made any changes after that point.  I had some earlier versions that included the holes for PCB-mount switches and stabilizers, and there may have been one that had SMT pads for the diodes.  I can look for those on my backup disks later today.

I decided to rotate all of the switches so the LEDs are at the top (towards the number row, if there was one).  I based that decision on the observation that only the Poker/Pure seem to have the LEDs oriented the other way.  I'm sure there are others, but I know you can get replacement caps for Ducky... I've never found them for KBT.  Also fixed some spacing issues and added the text.  Still need to work on the ground zones.  If you can't read the text (I'm not sure about this KiCAD color scheme...), it says:

The SmallFry Keyboard
A 40% Design
in remembrance of Nate Walter
Special thanks to komar007, bpiphany, Dox and Regack

[attach=1]

So, I should note that I went a different route here than the board that jdcarpe is working from.  There were enough changes that I basically borrowed the schematic of the GH60 revB and reworked it into this layout.  So it should be simple enough to use the GH60 firmware, just eliminate a row and a couple of columns.  Almost all of the connections available on the GH60 are also on this board.  Everyone needs to thank Komar one more time :D.

Does this board need mounting holes (there aren't any right now)?  Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions? Derisive Laughter?

This is amazing regack! Do you have a list of all the improvements from the original PCB?

- atmega32U4 and all other SMT components are on the back of the board
- The LEDs are wired in a 4-row / 12-column matrix, with the rows/columns brought into pads for 1.27mm headers between the keys on the top row (between R&T, T&Y, Y&U, U&I).
- WASD Cluster, ESC and 'CAPS' (under the tab) LEDs are wired in to the atmega like the GH60
- 4 GPIO lines from the atmega broken out for 1.27mm headers between the I&O keys, also down at the bottom of the board under the spacebar
- also under the spacebar are the ISP pads
- holes for spacebar stabs
- holes for PCB mount switches

It's basically a GH40... Komar did all the work, I just spent some time tweaking his design to fit this profile  ;D

2TU style case with slide on cover. Optionally you can have a case with a lip as well. All layers are 3mm. Bolts to be decided. Tenting method to be decided.

You may need one more spacer layer on the cover if you plan on using SA keycaps.

Well, now mounting holes might be nice. Maybe you can use some of the same relative positions as the GH60 uses. Obviously not all of them will fit. :)

Well, now mounting holes might be nice. Maybe you can use some of the same relative positions as the GH60 uses. Obviously not all of them will fit. :)

So it seems only 2 of the mounting holes that match would be useful.  Others are off the board entirely, because the 60% is so much larger :D.  Between the B & N, and on the left board-edge vertically between CTRL and SHIFT.  The one between TAB & A will probably be too difficult to access, it's probably 30-40% under the 'A' switch body.   Given the size of the board, I just added one under the ENTER key.  I guess that should work ok?

[attach=1]

Because I must be coo coo for cocoa puffs, I also tossed together this alternative board which uses my teensy-on-a-daughterboard and THEORETICALLY offers full individual LED support with a MAX7219 (also on a separate daughterboard).  Those boards under the main PCB add something like 8mm to the overall thickness.

[attach=2]

I might try to add the MAX directly to the other design, but I haven't been able to get it to work outside of an Arduino sketch, so, it's kind of unproven.   When running Teensyduino it works great, you can make neat running LED patterns, slow-glow the LEDs, etc... but then I don't have a keyboard... so uhh... anyone who knows more than me want to take a stab at making the Teensy talk SPI to the MAX?

I'd love to get that working, because I have 3 other projects I'd like to use it with :D

Does this board need mounting holes (there aren't any right now)?

Nice! Using my crap-tastic MS Paint skillz, I moved a couple of the holes. I don't know if the hole between Tab & A would work, as you stated, unless you were able to move those traces and center the hole there.

I'm super stoked for this.

What is the PCB size currently?

Almost done with my "Pencil Case" rev2 case, which has support for tenting as well.

Yes, I should move it over, or leave it, and add another one nearby?  I just brought in the GH60/poker/pure mount points to see where they would land.  I'm debating in my head if I should leave the ones that match, but add a couple of more in different spots specific to this board.

Maybe I can't see it, but what is the point of keeping the GH60 mounts points? The PCB is much too small to fit the Poker in any case.

If you do want to make it somewhat compatible, then keep the mount points so that the 40% PCB centers on the GH60 PCB?

I'd say the mounting holes are being added just in "case." :P

I know the MOQ is probably ridiculous, but one day maybe there could be a reduced size, Poker-style injection molded plastic tray case for it. Which would have mounting standoffs, of course. And then we would be glad the mounting holes were there.

Oh, well maybe I was confusing when I suggested they be in the same relative positions. I just meant maybe there could be a slot hole on each side between the bottom row and the ZXCV row. And between tab and A. And under the enter key. And maybe one between a couple of keys in the center. That's all. :)

I'm not sure why the slotted holes don't render properly.

- Added option for 1.25+1.0 or 1.0+1.25 for the right-shift
- LEDs for the 1.0+1.25 arrangement are 'flipped' so they share a common anode (with the regular layout).
- Added back missing slot on right right side

Yes, same components as the keypad, so we're kind of prototyping this one with that...

We can save some dough maybe by getting components for both of these together and also save on shipping if you guys want me to do the case. Should have told me earlier and we would have saved on those nuts/bolts. Oh well.

So, with all those extra io connections, you should still be able to keep the CAPS/FN LED as well as the WASD LEDs and still have room to add a 4x6 keypad run from the same firmware... though someone would have to write that firmware.

As you probably know by now, 7bit is running Doubleshot Replacements Round 5 (Honeywell) at Deskthority. These are SA-profile (thick) double shot ABS keycaps from Signature Plastics.

He has included (at snoopy's suggestion) a kit specifically designed for this layout. To order the keycaps for this 40% keyboard, you would need to order:

HONEY/FORTY
HONEY/SPACE625

As you probably know by now, 7bit is running Doubleshot Replacements Round 5 (Honeywell) at Deskthority. These are SA-profile (thick) double shot ABS keycaps from Signature Plastics.

He has included (at snoopy's suggestion) a kit specifically designed for this layout. To order the keycaps for this 40% keyboard, you would need to order:

HONEY/FORTY
HONEY/SPACE625

Big thanks to 7bit for including this set in his group buy!! :thumb:

http://deskthority.net/marketplace-f11/doubleshot-replacements-round-5-honey-sphericals-t6732.html

This is perfect.  Now I can get in on this GB but still have it be affordable!  Only $45 to outfit this 40% with some nice keycaps.   :thumb:

I'd love one of these keyboards with the space bar split into three (two wider keys and a central 1x1).

I might have a go after I finish my 20% keyboard... If the PCBs ever arrive!

Now that I saw the 4 unit space bar in the deskthority round 5 gb, it makes me wonder why a 4 unit space bar isn't used for this 40% board.

You can probably fit two more key caps in the bottom row with a 4 unit space bar.

I'd rather go with 2x 2.5 spacebars on either side and a 1.25u key in the center. Because you are generally hitting the spacebar on the sides.

No split spacebars. Sorry. You want split spacebars, small spacebars, etc. you are welcome to create your own project.

Hahahahah, not a fan myself, I said, I'd "rather" a split than small, but would prefer a large one if I have to use staggered layout.

Just throwing this out there.  Would it be potentially possible to program macros with the keymap tool that 'metalliqaz' has built for the epsilon in order to create a second function layer.  Something like a Shift + Function layer?

I would probably put things like; caps lock, home, end, esc, in the Fn + Shift layer.  I don't mind picking up both hands for those types of operations.

Current function layer:

If something like this is possible, then we free up some real estate in the Fn layer.

Just a thought.  Please tell me if I am speaking crazy...

Oh it's definitely possible. Check out hasu's TMK firmware thread in addition to metalliqaz' Epsilon thread. The possibilities are great.

Very cool.  Ya, there are a lot of possibilities then.  That top function row has a lot of potential.

MY GOAL: Make a 40% board viable and hopefully intuitive for software developers (aka - Me)...

Here is what I have come up with so far.  Note: Top print is the default layer, bottom print is 'shift' layer...
Standard layer...
[attach=1]

Function layer...
[attach=2]

My considerations:
- I added support for Ins, Del, Return and Caps in the standard layer.
- I dramatically changed the way the function layer worked.
- Function row should not take up 12 keys.  I tend to use the function keys in groups, so I created groups of 3 for them.
- I moved the numbers and their symbols to a numpad style and added things near the pad that would be often used with numbers: . + - * / Enter
- I added Ctrl support in the function layer because I often use things like 'Ctrl + [' and 'Ctrl +]' for indenting and such in text editors (also commenting blocks and such)
- I tend to use two hands for brackets and braces anyway, so I created bracket and braces group in the middle of the keyboard.
- I tried to keep the keys like: ' " : ; = + - _ \ ? / | closer to where they are in my muscle memory.
- I added support for Pg Up and Pg Dn
- Edit: I intentionally did not add a 'Fn + Shift' layer for 'up, down, left, right, home, end' because I use those as selection modification.

As a side note.  I did two color keycaps because that is how I would probably build this for myself.  If I am using blank keycaps, I would want some points of reference.  This is just my preference...

Looks great, I'd want to try that.
The only thing I would change is leave the Ctrl key next to the 'A' key on both layers.

Edit: The Tab key is useful, but in vim you can use Ctrl+t in insert mode, and >> in command mode to insert tabs, so I would put the Tab key on the bottom row in the standard layer.

Tab is hardcoded into my brain to be up and left on a keyboard and I use tab all the time, so for me it makes sense there.  The great thing about programmable controllers and keymap softwares is that you could make that change easily in your setup...

This layout is not going to be everything for everyone.  This was my first attempt to make a usable layout for a coder...

It'd be two keys but I shrank the shift keys to shove an extra in row two. As a (some times) coder (bash, vim) I really want the punctuation to be accessible (well, there's novel writing in November, too) but again, if I were to have a 40% I'd carry it around to work on other folk's computers without tweaking their layout, etc.

So maybe I should just yank 'H' as well as 'B' and shove 'em somewhere on the third layer. Edit-before-posting: Ignore the colors. I can't see 'em on FF as I have that turned off.

Do you really need alt and ctrl on both sides of the board?

You should be able to add a shift layer to your WinKey or Alt on either side.

Or maybe put Esc into the function layer and use that shift layer something.  What key are you missing?

This is an exciting project. Having the layout generator is great for riffing off others ideas, so thanks for those. Unfortunately, all I have to offer will be my cash when they become available to buy. I've ordered a 40% set from Round 5 in preparation.

Dammit.  I have no need for one of this keyboard.  Yet I had a strange desire for one.

This is looking amazing.  Really liking all the flexibility of layouts on the pcb, especially considering the tiny footprint.

I won't need anything else except for this and a qazpad. Maybe an ergodox. And maybe a topre board. But nothing else. Except novelty caps

It starts out innocently enough.

Then you're diving through bins looking for boards to rescue and finally you're buying keyboards you can't even connect to a PC.

The Sparcstation IPX was small before small was cool... plus you can gut one pretty easily and put a mini-itx board inside, but now we're pretty far off topic :D

God you're right, last night I was looking at a heathkit H19 keyboard. I've also been itching a bit to pick up an old terminal, simply to run off of my work desktop (which runs Linux). You guys are bad. I thought it was hazardous for my wallet when I fell in with the fountain pen crowd.

/hides Ultra 60 and Type 5 keyboard with mouse (I think the mouse is still around... somewhere).

I have no idea what you're talking about.

Luckily in my case, it was a box my employer was going to pay to have someone remove.  I helped them out.  Kinda wish I'd grabbed the HP itaniums with HP-UX on them.  Just cause.  I mean, those should be able to run OpenVMS so I'd have one of each!

For... no good reason since I can already run OpenVMS on emulated Alphas or VAX and it's a lot easier on the electricity bill ;)  Though I wouldn't have HP-UX.  Which... is fine with me.

Still plenty of development, testing. We need to test full LED support, PCB mounted switch/stabs, SMD components, firmware.

Therefore, not anytime soon.

Just a reminder:
Whoever plans to buy the smallfry keyboard, should have a look at round5: http://deskthority.net/wiki/Round_5

HONEY/FORTY  -- gives you a complete set of keycaps that fits perfectly and contains some unique keys, specially for the 40% keyboard, for only 35$
HONEY/SPACE625  -- a matching spacebar for only 3$

and if you want, you can additionally order some keyboardrunners in the right profile (row2) for the toprow of this board:

HONEY/KBDRUNNER/RED/R2  -- 1$

So guys, order some kits. And if you already ordered, order some additional kbdrunners in row2 :)

depends on how quickly I can pick up the layout.  i will most likely travel with it as my road warrior...

i suspect I am going to have some issues coding with it because of the requirement of Fn for stuff like ;, ', ", {, }, (, ), etc...

only time will tell.  :)

Pretty excited about this.  I have 3 or 4 different Fn/Fn2 layers in the plans.  Trying to figure out what is going to make the most sense once my fingers are on that board.  If I can figure out a way to code on that board I would be VERY happy...  All those special characters are going to be a bit tricky I think, but I just need to find one good FN layout which suits my brain.  :)

I should have all of the parts sometime next week for those who want to be beta testers.  Those pesky atmegas were illusive.  I think it'll be ~$20-25 for everything but switches.  As of right now, there are 10 available.

I ordered enough components for each of the boards so I can provide the atmega32u4, usb, reset switch, diodes, caps, resistors, crystal... all those bits.

The main things everyone will have to supply for themselves will be switches, stabilizers, cases and LEDs.   That said, I do have some LEDs and through-hole resistors (for those LEDs) but limited choices if you don't want to supply those on your own.

My only reserve would be the difficulty in soldering on the controller, I have soldered a many a switch and connector, but never something that small.

If it wasn't for the SMD soldering I'd be down to test one of these.

The controller isn't even the hardest part to solder...it's that damn crystal. :)

What would be involved with helping beta test?  I am comfortable soldering SMD, IC's, etc.  What about sourcing the components; switches, plates, pcb, etc?  And what sort of testing are you looking for?

Good point, I can solder (arguably), program, construct cases, have the components but not sure what parts you are looking to test specifically.

My plan was to put everything needed into a box, and send that out: PCB, atmega, mini usb, crystal, caps, resistors, diodes...  I have some leds as well and could include appropriate resistors if people want to pick from the colors that I happen to have (blue, green, orange, I believe) - there are only 6 LEDs supported natively, the other 34 would have to have some kind of accessory board to operate.

Testing would involve... building it, making sure it works?  There are only 2 places with alternate key locations.  I intend to also test using the expansion pads (on the right side of the board) to add in a keypad to the matrix.

Maybe document what problems, or whatever you find along the way that could be fixed?  That's all that comes to mind right now.

Now I need to ping Metalliqaz to make sure this version get supported in his firmware.
The only thing I don't have are switches.

to my Round 5 (http://deskthority.net/wiki/Round_5#Send_order_to_get_on_the_train:_2014-01-06) order.

I'm already ordering a set of the alphas, and the mods for the SmallFry KB or only a little bit more.

I would definitely like to be part of the beta when it happens, so just let me know what you need me to do.

I am assuming that only the kits labeled with something like the following would not be price fixed.

Rebates for larger orders:

I do not see that associated with the black 40% kit...

The "Rebates for larger orders" only apply if you order multiples of the same set, AFAIK.  For the most part, the prices are fixed.  But, there were several sets that were added only recently, so their prices are still in flux.  And actually, several of them aren't meeting the MOQ, so they may get cut...

I have enough PCBs and parts for 10 prototype kits to people who want to poke around.  I put mine together, but it doesn't have any firmware on it yet.  Been really busy lately, sorry.

Anyway, here's the cost breakdown :

I've been using this JD40 for some time now and wanted to give a quick experience report.

Basically, I love it. While at work I use a 60% board and while at home I use this JD40. The layout is sufficiently different that I've been able to develop the muscle memory for both board, and can now switch interchangeably between the two with almost no loss of accuracy or speed. (I'm obviously slower on the JD40 than on the 60%, but I mean that I don't need to relearn the layout every time I use it.)

I'm a huge fan of how close everything is to the home row. Even complex chords don't feel like a hassle because there's very little stretching that's necessary. I might have a leg up because I've been a heavy emacs user for some time, so I'm used to finger contortions of various sorts, but I expect that anyone so inclined could pick up this layout in a few days.

This is also the first board I've had that's fully programmable, and I'm finding it hard to go back. The teensy + hasu's firmware makes it super easy to tweak the layout as I figure out what works and what doesn't, what I rely on and what I don't. I've basically given my QFR up as a pass-around-the-office keyboard, but I expect that if I ever wanted to use it again I'd have to get a Frosty Flake for it :p.

I'm not sure...although maybe I could get used to it in the "P" position since that's where the semicolon usually is. It's a pretty frequently pressed key, though.

True, but I'm just too in love with the colemak homerow :))
I think I'll have to stick to my filco until I either design my own more colemak-friendly 40% board or just decide to compromise on 60%.

This needs to be one key wider to be really useful. Enter is not the best choice for a home row key.

dvorak user -- yes, I'd want just a few extra keys for this physical layout. An extra column and I wouldn't feel quite so squashed.

Of course, I haven't a physical keyboard to compare to, and maybe the "expectation" -- if there is one -- is to create a new, 40% layout that's not dvorak. But dvorak's punctuation is sorta in the middle of the keyboard ... top three keys a ', ,, ., so you're automatically shuffling something if there isn't room for them.

I've posted in this thread before, but I've had new inspiration since then. Maybe I'll look at it again, see if something totally new can be reasonably be created.

Could you explain how?  It's the same number of switches in the bottom row, just a bigger space.  Or does it allow the lower right section to align better for arrow keys or something like that?

I'm thinking along the lines of the GH60 bottom row, etc., where there are holes and solder pads/traces for different switch configurations.

If you’re going to make the keyboard so small, why not a split spacebar so each half can be used for a different purpose?

For better keycap compatibility, most likely.

May I respectfully suggest offering more spacebar options my dear JD Carpe. I believe the space bar is one of the most useless parts of the keyboard. I myself only hit the spacebar ever in two places, both of which take place within a 1x1 space. If you could add more contacts, traces and mounting holes in the spacebar area, geekhackers can choose to use smaller spacebars and have more keys for doing more things.

I am a big fan of promoting smaller spacebars. I believe our thumbs do too much unskilled labor. The spacebar could probably be split into 6 keys. Based on the many photos I've seen (of spacebar wear), it is obvious that nearly everyone will hit his spacebar in roughly the same location, either CV or NM. If you are in the forefront of driving a custom keyboard revolution, please help us overcome the limitations of this old layout!

Yes, I initially proposed only using a 6.25-unit spacebar for easy keycap compatibility, and also because the electronics have to be located somewhere. But I will look at some possible other sizes, for those that don't like large spacebars.
Title: Re: The SmallFry KB, AKA jdcarpe loves 40%
Post by: AKmalamute on Tue, 25 February 2014, 11:57:12
If I build a second phantom, I'm going to try for the 7bit layout/plate. Same reason -- something like 2.75x "space" bars, and a 1x in between them.

On a related but tangential note, the shine on my work keyboard's spacebar demonstrates that I only use my right thumb for spaces ... at least 95% of the time. A decade later, and the region under my left thumb still has texture. The right side is not only as smooth as glass, it's starting to get indented.

The "standard" ergodox layout implies to me that some think they use the left thumb, only, for spaces. I am glad for firmware level reprogramming because ... phew! Wrong thumb.

JD,

I love your design (and other 40% designs), but would only consider buying a design with a split space (and programmability). My preference is for a central 1x key with 2x space keys on each side. The remainder of the space can be used for additional keys (preferred) or making the other keys larger.

Keep up the good work.

I'm really excited to get mine!
So excited, in fact, that I've already come up with my own layout. I wanted to share it and encourage other 40% users to share their layouts. You can use this website (http://ne0.cc/laygenV2#q0LPX) (preloaded with a smallfry kb base)

Anyway, here's my layout:

Primary layer (note that I will have shift + comma as period):

Fn Layer (the NP key will make numbers send numpad keycodes):

Fn2 Layer:

I'm open to suggestions for improvement, as well. This is simply a first draft. I'd love to see others' layouts as well.
Also, big thanks to ne0phyte for the layout designer, and of course to JD for designing the keyboard and the original layout!
Also, of course, keep in mind that this is designed for someone who uses OS X primarily. Windows/Linux users will definitely need some modifications for navkeys etc.

Personally I love the idea of my hands not moving at all. I don't mind a bit of chording, and I designed my layout above so that it's especially easy to chord numbers and many symbols (right hand holds modifier while left hand presses key). I can't wait to try it! I'll definitely post here how I like it—if it's too small, or if I can easily get used to all the chording.

thanks to anyone who can shed some light for me.

Those are from the Reto set (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=40175.0) that Matt3o created. They came out last year and were quite popular.

You might find a set in the classifieds, or if we're lucky, SP or Matt3o will do a round 2!

There was an earlier version which used a Teensy and through hole diodes. I have sold a few of them, so they are around. I call it the JD40.

This newer version with SMD components is the SmallFry keyboard. It has had a prototype pcb made, but regack, The_Chemist, and Grendel are still trying to troubleshoot it, as far as I can tell. There was some issue that they haven't nailed down yet.

We did find workarounds for the SmallFry rev 0.10.5 problems, but most likely there will be another board turn. It's up to regack to decide if this batch of boards should be released into the wild. It's a bit of a though call, since a turn will reassign some I/O lines so firmware for 0.10.5 will not work w/ a newer version w/o modifications. OTOH the money paid for the 0.10.5 boards is lost if they stay in the closet...

Yes, there is one trace missing (fairly easy to fix w/ a short wire) and the oscillator is a real PITA to solder on (needs slightly bigger pads.) The main problem was that the JTAG interface is enabled by default in the 32u4 chips, taking over the higher port F lines that are connected to parts of the key matrix (proposed fix is to move the I/O lines to not use those). TMK seems to reset the JTD bit in the MCUCR only for specific configurations (hbkb, hid_liber, and Phantom), so I wasted some time to "reinvent the wheel" :/

Greetings!

Is there a chance that you'll be releasing the design files for the plate?

I'm looking to build my own 40% keyboard as a summer project and plan on hand-wiring rather than a PCB but I'm lacking the ability to design a plate to mount the switches. If you were to release it or point me in the direction of somewhere I can find a design similar to your layout that would be awesome.

i want to put FN on lower right and then have up/down on right menu and alt with left/right corresponding with the arrow keys on the board.
most other mods aren't as labeled, need to come up with an ideal setup there once i actually get the board.

Here is the layout I'm going with. Obviously most people won't want their letters in the same spots as mine, but other then that, I think this is a pretty good layout.

Very cool. I went with the numpad-style arrangement on my 40%, and I'm very glad I did. I see that you still have some space on your second layer. One thing I'd recommend would be adding more shifted punctuation there so you can invoke things like (), {}, etc with only a single modifier. Needing both fn+shift to hit things like that is very awkward, and if you've got extra space you might as well use it.

Why is it so thick? Are you leaving space between the pcb and the case, so no short circuits?  Is it so that the controller has room?  Why so many layers of metal?

Oh, this is totally going to depend on the firmware you use. I'm using firmware I wrote myself, but I know that TMK supports it, albeit a bit awkwardly.

Nice. The layout is very reminiscent of my Stowaway Ultra-Slim Bluetooth Keyboard (http://www.amazon.com/Stowaway-Ultra-Slim-Bluetooth-Blackberry-Handhelds/dp/B0002OKCXE):

Though I agree with the other (of DVORAK/COLEMAK), it needs at least one more column. But, I'd prefer two...

And, please split the spacebar, or give the option(s)...

Hello there.
Also having sama question as quote.
Probably doing one handwired and another when pcb is released.
And any news about pcb?

Kinda locked in with this design at this point. Until the SMD version is done.

The point of the 6.25 spacebar, in case you were wondering, is availability. It's hard to find 3.0 or 4.0 unit spacebars.

For what it’s worth, in practice DSA keys work pretty well for spacebars. (Still not ideal, but two 3 unit DSA keys definitely beats one standard–length spacebar.)

Well, your question is actually two sided. First, the physical layout of the JD40 is fixed, so for instance, you can't swap the 1.25 and 1 unit keys' positions. There aren't holes in the PCB for those options.

Second, it's not possible to assign arbitrary shifted scan codes. For example, when you press Shift+4, it will always output the scancodes for shift and 4 to the operating system, which gets interpreted as a $ (assuming US English). This is a limitation of the HID driver. The firmware gets programmed to output a certain keypress scancode, and the driver interprets it. Unless you want to attempt to rewrite the HID driver, I don't think it's possible. You're not the first to want to do that, but unfortunately the firmware can only send keypresses.

Jumper or bridge each of the LED pads to the adjacent pad that has a trace running to it. I use small pieces of the diode legs to make the jumpers.

In this case, T just means through hole, not SMD. As long as they are through hole 1N4148 diodes, they should work just fine. :)

SP doesn’t make a keycap like that except in SA family. I take it you’re planning to use SA caps on your keyboard? Or does some other keycap vendor also make caps with a step on the left or a step in a symmetrical key?

Not according to this http://www.keycapsdirect.com/pdfs/DSAFamily.pdf (but perhaps it’s wrong or out of date).

From googling it looks like otd.kr paid for the molds for a DSA stepped capslock, and so needs to grant permission for SP to use that mold for anyone else?

Does it always have a window? If so, that’s going to be a little silly looking flipped and put in on the right.

This project is/was called the SmallFry Keyboard project, named after my friend who passed away last year. Ultimately, the goal was to have a PCB with SMD components, and holes for PCB mounting both switches and stabilizers. That project had a prototype PCB made by Regack, but there were issues with the prototype, and the project seems to have stalled.

An earlier 40% PCB was designed, also by Regack, to my specifications using a Teensy for the controller, and using all through-hole components. That is the keyboard I dubbed the JD40, which is now being sold at the [CTRL]ALT store, and via mkawa's group buy.

mkawa called his group buy the SmallFry Keyboard Kit, and it includes a JD40 PCB, titanium plates, and a sorbothane spacer. He named it so, because all profits above his actual costs are being donated the the Nathan Walter Foundation, a charity which helps prospective Eagle Scouts fund their projects.

Hope this clears a few things up. :)

The fix for the SmallFry KB was pretty small and was handled by Grendel IIRC, maybe give regack a ping, if you want to get the project back on track. I have a SFKB PCB sitting back home (In India) that I need to solder when I get back.

any chance a newer revision will have support for an offset 'enter' key?

the switch should be positioned to support an offset capslick with the step on the left side (the mirror of a capslock on the right side)
SP doesn’t make a keycap like that except in SA family. I take it you’re planning to use SA caps on your keyboard? Or does some other keycap vendor also make caps with a step on the left or a step in a symmetrical key?

Newer version?  Is there interest in an updated JD40?  It is possible I did a design for an updated PCB as an exercise, and then didn't take it anywhere.

I added backlighting and drew up an alternative bottom row, including a split spacebar.  I also added PCB mounts for the stabs, and provided the ability to swap the 1.00x and 1.25x keycaps on the second row (RH edge.)  I did have to drop the fancy USB re-locator circuit and move the Teensy, but I rotated the Teensy so that a cable could be routed to exit where it does on the current JD40 PCB.  I made it backwards-compatible with the JD40 so existing plates and firmware could be retained.

Anyhow, I could easily finish this, including enabling both capslock positions.  I had just done this as an exercise, so I never posted it or anything.  (Also, this is a complete surprise to JD and Regack, who have more rights to the design that I have.)

Is anyone interested?  JD, what are your thoughts?

Oh, I also drafted a slim wedge case; also backwards-compatible.

It isn't shown in this sketch, but the top surface will have switch and stab cut-outs to act as a plate.  It looks like a $30 laser-cutting job for QTY=2.

This is true - we used it in HyperFuse and I had to get permission from OTD to use it.

See http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=47133.msg1215017#msg1215017 . The board had some minor problems (missing trace, one or two diodes printed the wrong way round, small pads on the oscillator) and some possible changes (hook up all LED's to PWM capable pins, move some lines off the F port.) Not sure what the current status is :/

I don't mind at all if you want to publish this. I'm all for improvements!

But, for me personally, I would love if you could focus a bit of that PCB-making genius of yours toward the next project, the JD45 (or GH45, if you prefer). It's a bit more useful, in my opinion, although some may not like the small split spacebars.

Does anyone know whether or not it's possible to program macros for lack of a better word into these guys? I'm primarily trying to program some of the common 3+ key combos into my function layer.

ctrl + alt + del
ctrl + shift + esc
alt + f4
ctrl + shift + arrows

I would hope its as easy as having the firmware send multiple keycodes, but I'm not entirely certain whether or not this is possible with the given firmware tools out there.

I was directed to Easy AVR that made setting up function layers and macros extremely easy. http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=51252.0

Has anyone else gotten so used to their JD40 they can't use normal keyboards anymore? Every time I have to use my normal one to type I mess up 70% of what I'm trying to type because I'm so used to using function layers.  ;D

Also, I can't seem to get the LEDs to work. I used a 300 Ohm resistor on the bridge labeled [300], but that didn't seem to get it to work. Am I using the wrong resistors? These are the exact resistors I am using http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009XOP5WM/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The only LED that has traces near it is the Caps Lock LED, under the 1.25-unit key on the second row from the top. You have to bridge each trace to the adjacent LED solder pad to make it functional.

Or did you have some other configuration on your build?

This is the area I'm talking about. It's marked [300] so I assumed it needed a 300 Ohm resistor. If it did and this isn't the cause of my LED issue I'm at a lost of what is the issue.

Maybe you have the polarity of the LED reversed?

Oh wait, I see that you have soldered LEDs in every switch. But there are no traces on the PCB for any LEDs besides the Caps Lock LED. If you want LEDs in other switches, you would have to hand wire connections to each and every other LED.

Don't know if it's been posted here before, if it is even allowed to be posted here. There is a groupbuy running right now on PMK that has a JD40/Smallfry modifier kit as an option.

Just thought everyone should know this since it seems most people are stuck to DSA profile keycaps due to the odd layout of the board.  :thumb:

Feel free to remove this if it shouldn't be posted here but I just thought it should be pointed out since I didn't know about this until now. 9 more people need to buy the mod pack for it to tip.
