[IC] GMK MTNU Dashboard- Full Novelty kit!
« on: Wed, 04 December 2024, 14:46:38 »
311438-0

Taking inspiration from 1980s and early 1990s car dashboards, particularly GM and VW, this set is designed to mimic the colors of car dashboards.

311323-1

I am excited that this set will be the second all-new design for MTNU (after Rascals). It doesn't have novelties right now, as it's a strong set without them, but I can be convinced to do ISO dash symbols A la GMK CYL Redline if there is enough interest. I have added a novelties set, but these are subject to change- I think I might swap ABS for temp on ANSI space.

Colorway might not be 100% for me, but i kinda like it. Kitting is excellent imo.

I like the colorway, does give "electronic" dashboard look from back in the 80s vibes IMO. I'd love to see the green & orange swapped. Not sure how feasible it would be, but two different bases (one with orange alphas legends & green mod legends, then one with legend colors swapped) might be something to think about. Filled out the IC, GL with this project! :thumb:

This could be Green Screen's relative, Green Screen Dark. Green Screen had two legend options.

100% agree! Also great example to back up the feasibility of what I suggested!

I will look into the feasibility of doing it both ways. The amber alphas/green mods came from the inner ring of the speedometer being KM/H (in Amber) and the outer in MP/H (in Green). Give me about 25 minutes, and I'll run a render of it the other way (not annotated, of course). As a conceptual exercise, this is great- but once venders come in, we'll see.

Also, I love SA Green Screen, just wish it's not $160 base.

Oh wow, thanks! For me I actually prefer it with green alpha legends! I guess we'll have to see what other's think.

One idea is to have two Alphas kits and two Mods kits so people can mix and match. But this might not be compatible with GMK's MTNU manufacturing/pricing structure.

That'll be on my to-do list over the end of the year. Finalize colors (some IC respondents want it a hair brighter, but will see), decide on novs, the 40s/compatibility kit, and then seeing if I can do a dasher/dancer thing with this set.

So that everyone has both accent color options, please consider add two green accent keys: R2 1u ESC and R3 1.5u Enter

EDIT: also two non-accent keys?

When I tweak the colors in the next set of renders, I'll add green accents. On the topic of novelties, I will have something done before the end of next week: adapting some dash symbols.

Does MTNU not support barred F and J?

I don't know, I simply have a preference for scooped.

I don't know, I simply have a preference for scooped.

I struggled with MTNU profile not having barred or dotted F & J keys. The profile, for normal keys, are already scooped so the super scooped keys are even more of a struggle to type on.

In touch typing this matters alot when fingures float as one start typing fast. Often I missed hitting F or J because my figure didn't travel down enough. Also in touch typing one need the bar or dot to realign the position, super fast, to avoid miss hitting keys. It is impossible with MTNU even after modded, albeit not the best, my F & J keys to find them quickly.

I understand the bar is not practical for MTNU profile but the dot is when implemented properly.

Based on this, I cannot justify spending a small fortune to buy something that I know is flawed. There are two MTNU colorways I really like, including yours, but won't buy based on my experience.

If you would like to do something really, really helpful for us, please demand GMK to include dotted F & J keys and be the first one to fix the flawed MTNU profile.

Thank you for your time.

I decided to force the 40s accents - I am still planning a compatibility kit, so stay tuned.

Following some good and not-so-good feedback on the IC, I've made a few changes to the kit. I have made the orange and green slightly brighter and made some of the suggested kitting changes. Novelties are in the works, as is the aforementioned compatibility kit. In terms of the styling and presentation of the kit, everything was designed to fit a specific aesthetic, which may seem haphazard but is very in line with the advertising copy of the period from which this set takes inspiration. I view the interest check process as collaborative, so I am always open to constructive feedback.

There is no plan right now; however, if you are interested, please fill out the IC and indicate that specific interest, and I will consider it for future expansion.

12/11/2024 - Updated Kitting and Renders (More a reflection of my growing proficiency in rendering than a substantive change in the kit).

Here's a preview of the novelties, which are in progress. I'm looking forward to your feedback. Please understand that this is a rough draft and still very much a work in progress. Yes, I know I need to make the line thickness uniform.

Finished update, will post previews below.

Based on further feedback (Thanks Matt3o Discord!), I have further refined the novelties kit. Here's a few new renders featuring the Nemui (眠い) keyboard.

Barred and nubbed homing key molds don't exist yet, afaik. You're gonna be passing for a long time.

For both selfish and logical reasons, I hope GMK adds tooling for MTNU barred homing soon.

CYL sets almost never contain non-homing F & J. Typically both scooped and barred options are offered, with nubs occasionally in the mix. In fact, September's GMK CYL Evil Dolch R2 had five Alpha kits, all with barred F & J. Only the TKL kit had scooped as well.

In contrast, most MTNU sets have had non-homing and scooped F & J options. Why would MTNU customer preference be different?

I'd love to see it happen. It just seemed like the implication was that it's some sort of designer oversight, versus the molds just not existing.

I'd be more excited with an R5 home row than having barred or nubbed homing keys. As Piperaceae said, with GMK still rolling out molds, there are only scoops for homing. Furthermore, GMK is adding new mods like bars as time goes on. For wit, 6U space wasn't available in the first run of MTNU.

Here's an update on the status of the set: I am communicating with GMK for color matching. I have finalized the physical colors of the set using RAL references for easy matching. For people with a RAL wheel at home, the colors will be:

RAL 2017- RAL Orange
RAL 6014- Yellow Green
RAL 9005- Jet Black

In the new year, I will start approaching vendors as I have incorporated most of the feedback from the IC into the extent sets. I am considering a 40s kit, as there has been some interest, but not enough to represent a critical mass to do the work on the set.

I thank everyone for their feedback and have high hopes for this set.

Examining trends with other MTNU sets, the novelties are often considered part of the base kit. As such, I have added a question to the interest check regarding adding the novelties to the base. If so, should I trim the number of keys to keep the kit affordable?

Is this what you are thinking for MTNU R5 home row? Would you use it for the bottom row too, like SA uses R3?

Pretty much like that- I am a massive fan of 1-1-2-3-4-3 SA and R5 MT3, and I suspect that kind of arrangement would make MTNU super comfy.

Also, I am considering migrating the colorway to other profiles.

Those are my preferences as well. Last I heard there's no MT3 R5 tooling for ABS doubleshot, which is strange considering about 80% of SA sets have R3 bottom row.

There is significant interest in the international kit; just over 20 percent of interest check respondents are interested.

Likewise, about 65 percent of the IC respondents are interested in the Novelty kit. However, a significant number of respondents have expressed an interest in placing the novelties in the base kit, which is something I am strongly considering.

The next step for me is finally contacting vendors. I made significant progress in my other active project, SA Welles, due to some developments I will announce later this weekend, which took up much of my spare time and attention this week.
