So what happened on march 12th last year that caused 64 whopping people to show up at one time on geekhack? (According to the "whats going on" section on the home page). Geekhack was a much smaller site back then.
I think we should try to beat that this coming march 12th. There are a lot more regular users now than a year ago.
So everyone, on this coming march 12th, 2009, show up at geekhack at 9:07 AM NYC TIME (you can look up your local time here (http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?month=3&day=12&year=2009&hour=9&min=0&sec=0&p1=179), I picked 9AM New York time because its a reasonable hour in London (1pm), Tokyo (10pm), and Germany (2pm) and most of the rest of the world where the most geekhackers seem to be from).
You can participate even if you dont have a login, since the "most users online" stat seems to count unregistered visitors too).
Mark the date in your calendars right now :)
Lets break this baby.
:D

Back in the day some providers assigned you a new IP number for every single page loaded. For ex. AOL did this for modem users. A user being online gets a timeout until he's considered offline. If a user with changing IPs looks at several pages during the timeout period this will result in several different users registered.
That, or a link from a another, popular site. But usually it's the former.

that's a thursday!
i'm not going to be awake at 9am on a thursday!
-
Its my girlfriends birthday.
-
I'm game. It will be interesting to see if we can do it.
I think the search engine web crawlers went crazy that day. But I think we have enough regular users and lurkers to easily break it.
-
want to take bets on how many show? Person closest to it wins a t-shirt? (lol, I keep putting imav on the spot to give away t-shirts). But for the fun of it, my bet is 70. ;)
-
I will be on at that time! :D
-
Since 3/12 is a Thursday, I will be logged in as usual since I will be at work.
-
its coming up! :)
-
I will try to be there, it will be cool...
-
yoda says, try not, do!
-
I'll be here!
-
its coming up!
-
I'll try to be here but I'll have to find a suitable proxy that isn't blocked (Or make on myself) (I'll be at school). It's 3 days before my birthday :D
-
i'll be here as usual.

yoda says, try not, do!
Ok,ok. I will do. Not try : )
-
Barring any sudden illness or accident, I plan to be here for the big event.
-
its coming up!
-
I forgot about this. :D
-
I'll be logged in all day since I will be at work, so I will be here for sure. :)

That's what I'll have to do because I would rather give head than get up before 9 in the morning.

Me too, but I am at work by 6 a.m. and I leave at 5 p.m. or later. Corporate life sucks. :( At least I get plenty of time to use some fine keyboards. :)
-
I'm in.
-

I typically get up at 5am for my morning workout. (but I also hit the sack well before 10pm at night)
-
I've got classes most of tomorrow but will be here after that.

ozar but you have to be logged in at 9:07 AM new york time! (everyone has to be on at once else the record wont be broken!)
you can look up what that means for your local time here:
http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?month=3&day=12&year=2009&hour=9&min=0&sec=0&p1=179

Yeah, our schedules don't quite match up. I go to be an hour before you get up and I'm usually still at work around 10.

I just realized that Wellington has more posts than iMav. That's breaking some kind of record, isn't it? I mean, iMav has had a 14 month head start (you know, since he started the site). XsPhat is still leading, but I give it another, oh, 20 minutes, and Wellington will have overtaken him. :)

Wellington is a posting mad man. Good for him! (and the site in general)

Yeah I don't know how that happened. I've been staying away in the hope that someone would beat me.
-
You also took like a two month hiatus somewhere in there, too.

lol, dont worry i'm planning a hiatus too. I dont have any more keyboards to buy! (For a while anyway)
-
For how long? Half an hour? :) I am about to go on a little Cherry 'board spree. I think I might get myself a Filco with brown Cherrys (pending on what member Majestouch can get) and a G80-3000 with blues. I even found a source for G80-3000s with browns, so I might get one of those, too. I like the Alps 'boards a lot, but it's time to expand my horizons a bit. It's a little easier to do now w/o a fiancee in the mix. ;)

Are you sure? Those HHKB Pro 2 prices are FALLING! ;)
-

This was on the short list, but I am hedging now. The layout doesn't appeal to me, but I heard the switches on the HHKB are better than those on the full-layout Realforce (that, I would want all the switches to be of the same force). Chloe wasn't too excited about it either (not that she is the ultimate authority, but I greatly respect her wisdom and opinions), and without one to try, I will have to pass for a while. Besides, I can get 2-3 of the Cherry 'boards I am looking at for the price of one of the Topres. :)
-
i dont like the fact that the backspace button is so close to enter on the hhkb. if it werent for that, i would own one definitely. but im not a good typer, and making that kind of mistake could be costly. especially texting someone haha

I could log in and then go to class, but I figure the forum software will log me out automatically before the proposed 9:07 AM target.
-
I had a pretty good head start on him too, right?
-
the HHKB price drop happened because i bought one.
-
lets beat the record !
-
I never looked at your post counts before. Wow!
-
Two hour delay :D I'll definitely be here (Maybe not here (probably sleeping :)) but logged in)
-
But it's based on activity in the last 15 minutes.
Hmm.
Maybe I can set a bot to fire at 9:07. :D
-
Well over ten minutes left. Where is everybody? And did you know that the record has been broken already two weeks ago?
Most users ever online was 67, 2 Weeks Ago at 15:15.
-
I am checking in....3/12-------9:04
-
checking in... we're at 40 with 3 minutes to go!

Present.
-
Also here.
-
I'm here! Wooooo!
-
I bet people are going to forget that it's 9:07 EDT.
-

lol, probably sleeping ;)
does the count only update every 15 minutes? (if so we'll have to wait till 9:07 plus 15 minutes (too early in morning to do math) before we see the actual count.

Probably crawling sandy55.fc2web.com or something...

I bet a lot of people (not in the US) show up in about an hour. :)

you might be right - we just had daylight savings time.
hell, i can stay logged in.
still only 39 in the count, wth!!! :)
-
lol we still need a whopping 27 people to break the record! come on people, wake up!
it'll be pretty funny if the second half of the team shows up at 10:07.
-
I'll be here at 10:07 as well :D
-
I'll be here aaallllll day. :)

Nothing like having a party and no one remembers to show : (

Well... we are geeks. :(

Fail. It's a shame, too. I think, though, that many people may have decided not to join in due to us already breaking this record not too long ago. That, and this is during the work week for most people. It's not that it wasn't last year, either, but it does make it a little harder to coordinate things. Oh well, next year it's on a Friday, so we might have better luck next time.
-
This kind of event is cool, but I honestly think it would be cooler if we break the record without knowing it, as we did a couple weeks ago.
-
Fail. Funny.
-
It's probably easier to do it on a weekend or at a time where a large portion of the user base is out of work (although I know a lot of you are here during work as well).
Honestly, I didn't even show up. I was busy with work and totally forgot about it. I'm sure that it is the same with many others. :)
-
I tried to stay on but the PC turned itself off :)
Its Ellas birthday today as well.
Shame we could not beat the record.

No problem. You should be on Ella and not your PC, anyway. You do have to keep your priorities in line.
-
a time where a large portion of the user base is out of work
well, these are the perfect economic times for that! ;)
-
lol, we would have needed a pretty large number of people (another 27 or so; I think we topped out at 40, which honestly on any given afternoon we regularly approach 40 anyway!) So basically the people who would have been here anyway, committed to being here, lol ;) So I guess the record will be broken in a pretty random way.
-
I think this goes to show that we really need a good site redesign. Having something posted prominently about the record-breaking attempt would likely have been helpful (instead of buried in this thread).

hows the redesign planning going?
-
We have more registered users on now (20 at 4:24 p.m. CDT) than this morning. :(

lol

Back from classes now, but looks like the party was a flop.
-
I think what we learned is that 67 is going to be hard to beat. I mean we needed 27 more, and I dont see that happening even if every else who saw the thread did show up I dont think they'd add up to 27.
-
It will probably be beaten one day when we least expect it, just like it happened a few weeks back. Oh well, too bad it didn't happen today.
-
I totally forgot to do my part. :( I wanted to link the site on HH's news page and totally got sidetracked with work. Wellington, post some crazy pics of wild, new mod and I'll get a news post up on my site and drive some traffic this way...
-
lol, well I think i'm done with mods for the moment. At some point tho I still want to shorten the spacebar on my 1391401. That will probably involve a dremel tool and lots of soldering and a chopped off finger or two, so that'll be fun. Not till the summer though ;)
-
Nothing like having a party and no one remembers to show : (
I was on vacation and didn't have interweb. But it looks like it wouldn't have helped anyway. :(

Maybe the 3D renderings for my mini will qualify. :) Still some time to go though.
-
I have been noticing that there are more and more visitors (non-members) browsing the site. Just now (3/17 at 2:18 CDT), there were 54 people viewing the site, but only a handful of actual members. It looks like site is starting to get more traffic be it from searches or the Hot Hardware and Tech Report artcles. It is really awesome to see people taking interest in what is going on here. Great work, iMav and everyone here on spreading the word.
-
Also, the comments of a Slashdot article about the NPR article on Unicomp got hit with quite a few Geekhack links - and, yes, some were from me.
(Of course, Slashdotters being what they are, they may have called the article a Slashvertisement. :))

Most users ever online was 79, 22 Hours Ago at 15:13.
-
Yeah. I saw that. I was going to mention it, but I didn't know if it mattered considering we had that time with almost 500 users online (real or not)...
-
The forum software update must have started the visitor count again from scratch because it was 495 users (or bots), as pointed out by FKSSR.
-
GeekHack.org seems to be continuing to grow with member count, but also with activity:
Most users ever online was 81, 1 Day Ago at 15:56.
-
some day we can all consider ourselves the early adopters, the alphas...the double digits of /. LOL

I would totally put that shirt on my kid (when I have one). I'm already ready to buy this one (http://www.jinx.com/starcraft/youth/starcraft_zergling.html?catid=104).
