Dvorak/Qwerty Layout - Tell me how bad it is
« on: Mon, 13 February 2012, 16:59:51 »
Simple layout for my first real mechanical board.
Planning on ordering from WASD
And slowly replacing the keys.

Not sure if I should just move the image up and remove the backspace lettering all together.

Why do the qwerty legends have black squares around them?

To give the two layouts on the board a contrast.

I found when I just had the QWERTY as regular letters, it wasn't very aesthetically pleasing.
However as I intend to have this etched, I am not sure if it will turn out like that.

I personally think they will look quite strange, do you really need the qwerty legends?

Unfortunately yes, as other people find it frustrating to use my system with it.
Well I don't _need_ it, however it will make my life easier in certain situations.

Like not all games/applications have proper support for DVORAK layouts.
And I am far to lazy to rebind every game/app I use.

Go with the mentality that if other people can't type without looking at the keys they don't deserve to use your system?

I tried that with my other keyboard that was a sub in until I went after a proper mechanical board.

However I may change it, shall see.

By the way:
-black keys
-red qwerty without squares
-white letters and dvorak
-yellow pacman
-red "x change layout"
-maybe 6 colorful ghosts from pacman instead of homw/end/pgup/etc keys
-strawberry, cherry and apple instead of prtscreen/scroll/pause row

Sooo sweet combo.

^ This. If you wanna be nice keep a "normal" keyboard in the drawer, that's what I do. :)

The QWERTY legends look bad IMO. The images aren't my cup of tea either, but whatever floats your boat.

BTW got own engraved caps today.
Keyboard: Kinesis Ergo Advantage (two LF editions with red Cherry switches, one regular with brown switches)
Keyboard layout: basically Colemak, with some remapping to end up with my custom Kinesis Advantage layout
Typing test profiles: typeracer.com / hi-games.net / keybr.com

Version three, removed backspace text, increased box size, bolded letters, rounded corners.

All the small things won't come out the way you want them too, and the qwerty legends still look awkward on the keys.

I think it's a pretty good layout. The qwerty legend doesn't look too bad in that last pic. Custom layouts are cool. Bow ties are cool.

Small being? I've seen some similar etch jobs that turned out alright.

If it was feasible, that could definitely work.

Not sure if WASD would do it.

Indeed, but last I checked, it's just a little bit more expensive. There's an example of this on his website. I'd say it looks great, and is probably your bestbet.

Only problem is I don't care for the engraved look hmmm.
Probably stick with etched.

Oh well, its just a keyset and whatever I don't like will get replaced / designed out whenever I get a new set.
Also a lot of the spacing that looks incorrect is due to the way I am uploading screenshots.
The higher rez versions look flush.

Just converted the images properly into Vectors.

Few more decisions and I think I will forward it all to WASD.

Probably, going to be running a GB for some stuff I am after, possibly teaming up with a co-worker to do an 'odds and ends' sort of GB.

Keep an eye out. ^.<

On the off topic topic, thoughts on other than what I have for my ESC key?
A dalek would be amazing IMO

I failed to embed the fonts, and had to correct shipping info as I provided the wrong address (gg not personal addresses).

But everything is sorted, and it has been completed.
The package is en-route as of this morning.

Turned out not bad! Less detail than I hoped on the ESC and some of the punction QWERTY layout keys are hard to see.

I agree. No one at work messes with my Otaku HHKB.

I think the boxed QWERTY keys look good.  It makes it obvious that it's a dual layout keyboard.
