I went a bit crazy because I hated I was never able to get into 40% GB's or anything.

Starting with the Planck I have

JD45
JD40 MKII with custom acrylic case (shots out to Zach at Clueboard for hooking me up)
JD40 MKII with 1UP alu case
Bantom 44 handwired sandwich case
Van 44 (my very first  ;D)

I think between the Van and JD45 I have found my micro's. Love these dam things

I lurk around here from time to time, but just discovered this thread so thought I'd share some of mine. The purple one is indeed the minivan, really a great keyboard, my go to 40. Surprisingly practical for it' size.

This may be a bit off topic due to it being a bunch of questions not a keyboard photo but:

  • How many of you use a 40% at work or even as a daily driver?
  • What type of work do you do? Programming, data inputs, architecture?

Want to know because I used mine daily & it was damn fine but then I got HHKB (really the size is what matters here) and I stopped using my MA42 after that. Thinking about making a new 40% layout for myself but can't decide if the multiple FN layers are worth it.

A lovely small talk starter, I wonder how it feels while writing several hours; or, even better, how it feels while coding.

I use an MIT Planck at work 4/5 days a week and I love it! I'm a developer, so my experience is limited to coding but I'm thinking about building another one for home.

Use a JD45 at work programming, troubleshooting etc. I'll probably switch back to my HHKB-layout B.face once I got Xondat's X60. JD45's case has weird proportion -- thicker bezel at the front and thiner on the back -- and this always bugs me.  :(

The JD45 looks like something I would like but I'm leaning toward making an HHKB-layout 60% MX keyboard. 40%'s are fun but I don't travel that much.

I've used a MA42, JD40, and JD45 as daily drivers. Usually for papers, excel, MATLAB, and NX/ other school stuff. The most important part of using a 40% as a daily is getting the layout perfect for how you plan to use it. As soon as you find a comfortable set of function layers/ fn keys there isn't too much difference between 40% and 60%. That being said, 90% of the time I use a 60% because having numbers on a function layer can get tiring if you always need them.

Shameless MA52 plug

Yeap, that must be it. I had made the perfect layout for my MA42 but it must've been that number row why I switched to HHKB. BTW, how's it going with MA52?

The MA52 is ready to go, I just need to order the prototype PCBs. If the prototypes work I'll be selling 8 or so as kits, hopefully before the end of the year. I don't know how fast it'll happen though my schedule this semester is pretty packed.

Since I don't think I've posted this before, and this got bumped I'll post a shot of my JD-45.
149188-0

However I might recommend against whatever thing I read that led me to buy heavy-duty resistors. These puppies barely fit under there, and in fact do most of the work holding it off the table.

149186-1

I used this regularly when I had a working laptop. But it died so I set it aside until I was trying to rebuild two surplus-sale bought Optiplexes at once.

I'd use imgur but for some reason it doesn't want me to see my account page today. So I'll attach them inline and hope nothing breaks.

Finally setup my JD45. Still messing with the layout but am pretty satisfied with it so far. The extra column really adds to the usability compared to the original JD40. Can finally hit period normally!

alternatively, just put it on the table

Only my second build. A JD40 kit from 1Up keyboards. It's also, as you can tell, my first experience at covering a 40% with caps. But, what the heck, it's mine & I built it myself!

Gateron reds with a Cherry linear grey on the spacebar.

Very harsh lighting on the workbench but here we go...

How does linears feel on carbon fibre?

How does linears feel on carbon fibre?

This is my first board with reds so I can't compare to anything else. The Gaterons are very smooth & I lubed the grey & the stabilizers so overall the board feels great. My GH60 is built using old, used, lubed MX blacks and these reds feel as smooth as that one to type on.

I'm quite happy with the typing feel & impressed overall. I wasn't sure about a 40% but I'm quite taken with it.

Is this really carbon fiber? I wouldn't know. I thought carbon fiber had a texture and these plates are smooth. I thought this was some kind of acrylic with a carbon fiber "look". Anyway, I like the finished board a lot more than I expected for my first 40% experience. Very happy overall.
