[IC] RETRO RGB
« on: Mon, 12 May 2014, 13:51:49 »
POLL: http://tinyurl.com/of76uqm

I am going to try to do my first GB if the interest is there. Going to start gauging ANSI interest first. Will probably run this through Signature Plastics as their prices were best if my memory serves correct a while ago.

Like I said, this is my first GB so any insight would be appreciated as in what files I need to get for SC to print the set and what documents people would need to fill.

Going to go with a darker blue due to problems with the legends last GB.

Will you use SP's group buy system?

And are those legends 7bit's?

Most likely and yeah they're 7bits. He was kind enough to let us use them last IC, so I'm hoping he'll allow it again. This time, I'll take this all the way.

Those are from 7bit's R4.  You should find a photo of the real thing and post it.
IMHO, they didn't come out very nice.

I think those would work on grey keys...

Is this IC for a full set, or RGB modifiers? In either case, if 7bit agrees to let you use the legends, then he would be able to let SP know that it's okay to let you use the setup files as well.

Yeah, he did that last time. SP just needed the permission. Perhaps since the legends aren't clear on the white keys, perhaps we should just go for the modifiers and the function keys.

What do you guys think?

Just do the whole lot.  If you just do modifiers only they won't go with other key-sets easily.

All you have to do is change some colours so they are easily seen during the day or night.  White and light blue is a perfect example where they almost cancel each other out and they become opaque.  Just darken the blue slightly and it should be alright  :thumb: .

I'm potentially interested depending on how this shapes up.  I'm hesitant to go in if it's just modifiers, as I don't think they'll go very well with any other sets I have.

I would definitely make it with a darker blue, these were really not so visible. Bear in mind that in my picture up there I used blanks, so you won't see a thing on those obviously.

SoWaRe blue would look great on these! That would essentially be my dream set. Count me in!

Also, the R4 Retro alphas are actually a really light grey, not white. I hope that you preserve that coloring. Light grey + SoWaRe blue would be beautiful.

I'd like to get more interest on these.

I really want to move these to a GB but there aren't enough people yet.

I'm going to update the OP that well be using a darker blue for the legends.

I'd ignored this thread until because I don't really like the look of RGB symbols on black mods, though I know a lot of people did like them.

Looking at that mockup though, the blue on white alphas and blue on black F-keys look really great... it's a shame I'm still not sold on the RGB/symbols. Good luck with the buy, anyway, if it goes ahead I might pick up a set of alphas :D

Funny because it's the symbols I like and the fact that the RGB color scheme was subtle. To each his own though. There are plenty of sets people love that make me cringe hehe.

I am eager to see it with a darker blue as well which I feel will really make the alphas pop while still feeling like it's part of the set.

I am going to check with SP since this is gaining some traction but I think the MOQ should be 100 (if not too pricey) and it will obviously be tiered pricing.

I'll update the OP as well as soon as I know more.

Clicked on the POLL to see how it was going and all you did was provide 2 selections of blue on the keys?

You need to do up some graphics (variations) of this key-set otherwise this won't happen.  People need to see what they're buying into otherwise they go to the next Group Buy down the street and sign up for it.  There are far too many GB's here on Geekhack and if you want attention to your key-set and above all else any interest, then you do the showman style of a selling 'pitch'  8) .

Every successful pitch involves lots of graphics to help satisfy any curiosity on what's being available and what will be produced.  Then people decide on those very images that were displayed, it's that simple.  You want greater involvement of buyers then you need to lift your game in displaying the NEW key-set to everyone.  Don't just sell it to the oldies here on Geekhack who know what's going on but sell it to the newer keyboard enthusiasts to help entice their interest into customizing their input device  :thumb: .

In the past some others tried to get GMK/BSP group buys to happen but failed due to their own lack of salesmanship, very little interest was garnered.  Sorry but that's how we operate here on Geekhack especially with newcomers wanting to see what's the latest, greatest key-set currently available to buy.

I don't see why this RGB set couldn't get any more interest in the eyes of Geekhackers here, then setting up a nice display showing everyone what's available.  I've seen far worse setups take off down to SP and get made, later regretting why did they even bother to waste the plastic in making some key-sets in the first place  ::) .

Just wanted to check in and let people know I am still checking on this. I would probably move it to a GB once we have 100 people interested.

If that is not a good idea, let me know as this is my first time hosting one of these. I would also invite anyone experienced with GBs to help out if they have the time.

However, fear not if you are in on this and are worried. Even if I know squat, I wouldn't have taken this on if I didn't think I could. I can easily research other GBs and follow their process when things get real. It just always helps when someone experienced can drop by with some advice about things that happen behind the scenes.

I suggest to add a second 2.25u shift key to the set. Also I suggest to offer the modifiers as a standalone subset, due to the colors of the legends it may pull some demand as a sophisticated RGB like set, that may match original WoB cherries. Also, the 9 pack, and num pad may be offered as standalone subsets, to allow under-TKL users to get the caps they need only, with some savings. I'd be in for a modifiers set if available with no alphas.

Let us know when you will run this.  Don't let this be another failed Key-Cap Group Buy  :)) .

SA would be nice but fitting the Icon(s) onto the face of an SA profile may be problematic.  You need to ask Melissa about that, DSA has been done to death already hence time to NOT choose anymore DSA profiles for now.

DCS maybe the final choice, but if you want this colour-way and icons, then it has to go this way.
