Title: [IC]CRP C64 with bbox60
Post by: BUGERWORK on Sun, 23 August 2020, 14:12:55
Hello, I'm buger. My account can't be used again for some reasons, so I have to register again.
First of all, I'm sorry about the plastic. Because of some special circumstances, we have to make part of kit again, because sometimes we have to choose between quality and time. But the good news is that the quality problem has been solved, and it's only a matter of time.

Earlier, I was invited by Hammerworks to do a new design for CRP.As we all know, CRP is a very good heat sublimation keycap.I really like its retro style, so I finally got inspiration from C64.The brand new font, as well as the logo of C64, is revived on CRP by using side engraving and color!
In addition, this package also includes the bbox60 case designed by me,Bbox60 is an open project. I believe many people have seen it in other series. I designed it because I hope to have such a case, which is interesting, fun, affordable and stable.
The following exploded view is updated, and the mold is currently being produced. The supported PCB includes all standard gh60 and gk-xs series.
There are screws in the package, which will be used to fix the positioning plate, while the assembly of the shell does not need screws.
In addition, hidden gate will be used, but may be seen on the supports.

PS: The stickers on the pictures are free of charge.

There are also two color mats(90*40) in the set meal. I will try my best to listen to all suggestions on keycaps. At present, group purchase is planned to start in September.

Thank you!!!

Thanks! BTW I feel like the colors are a bit off. Maybe its a regional thing? I think my 64 has darker keys with white/offwhite legends.

Well, I know that the color is not the original C64. First of all, it is because of the use of one-sided sublimation. In addition, I hope it is a re-creation rather than a copy. Hope you will like it after seeing the real sample.

Really interested in C64 theme and matching bbox60 again! Some feedback:
  • Modifier R1 1u pipe key does not have the same side print like the pipe key in the TKL kit, can we have that as well?
  • Mac modifiers kit does not have control key "^", can we have those to be more standard?

Thanks!
The 1 :"restore"is too long to 1U,
The 2:I will consider this suggestion.
Thank you!

Cool caps.  Always interested in seeing some different fonts on nice keycaps. The only thing I would wish for is something slightly less bold.  The font seems just a bit too heavy, especially on the main alphas.
I bought one of the Box60 cases with the JTK Mars set.  Nifty stuff.

Love the design, especially the little color pops.

I'd be super cool if that could bleed over into the Mac set also (though I understand that set is probably of limited appeal). Something like the open apple legend on the Apple II/Early Mac with a pseudo 4 color rainbow effect using the existing set colors.

I don't get the C64 reference? Or is that for the case only?

Font looks vastly different, color scheme is different, you have low caps mods whereas C64 had all caps. It didn't have any those little icons you are going with and why is there a Windows logo on a C64 inspired set?

Because of the C64 copyright, I didn't use their LOGO, I tried my best to make them look different. Hahaha

I agree with others there should be an option for no icons on the mods and the mods should be in all caps.

The heavy alpha font would look better centered like the original c64 too.

Love the color PETSCII front legends though. Super nice.

I'm down for this. I really wanted one of Buger Boxes just to have one.  I missed the black one on Drop, and I have been going back and forth about the purple cyberspace one.  I still may order the box. I am more iffy on the keys.  Let me know where this will be in Sept/Oct.

These kits could use some work. Please take a look at KAT Refined (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=106725.0) and KAT Monochrome (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=106802.0) for examples of what a more approachable kit breakdown looks like. For example, the current split between the TKL and Modifier kits isn't very friendly to the majority of users.

I don't see a big issue, will just need to purchase both kits. This is much better kitting than other CRP sets.

Could you add text Code/System keycaps too beside the Windows icons?

@bugerwork,

As the BBOX60 case is running with multiple keysets and as a standalone both the case + stand, does there exist a sample or prototype?
Maybe just in another form regarding how the ABS plastic will be like ? The case concept is super neat :thumb:

Given that the regular C64 has dark brown keycaps and beige caps were first introduced for the Golden Edition, shouldn't the Bbox case be gold?

I actually agree with some previous comments, cool to see new CRP but the "inspiration" isn't clear enough to call this a C64 set.

Thanks! BTW I feel like the colors are a bit off. Maybe its a regional thing? I think my 64 has darker keys with white/offwhite legends.
Keys on the C64 came in multiple revisions throughout the years. This keyset is a mix, using a font inspired by early C64s but colour scheme and legend placement more inspired by the later C64C.

No legend is a perfect match to any original C64. On the original keyboards, only function keys have lower-case legends. And some examples of the C64 used the same keyboards as VIC-20's with a wide font reminiscent of Microgramma. (Then there's the SX-64 which is different altogether)

I like it! But I think that because the key set is so different from any actual C64, calling is "C64" would be misleading. It should have a new name.

Thank you for your suggestion, it's great, but first of all, this is not a complete imitation. I hope the symbols from the past have a brand new feel, but if this design is not called C64, I don't know what to call it?

My very first computer as a child was the C64 breadbin in 1982.  I loved it and used it for a very long time before moving to the Amiga.  I love this set, give it the time and attention to detail that it deserves.  I will buy all sets.  I have already bought your other sets from last month and thought they were very cool.

What's wrong with Drop?  I've ordered 1,000, give or take, worth or product just this year from them, and never had an issue.  Yes, there were problems during the outbreak of Covid-19, but considering that they operate off one of smallest staffs in the official capacity, it's hard to blame them for lost packages when people neglected to stay on top of their complaint forms or don't inform them that have moved until after they have moved.  I've had nothing but wonderful costumer service out of them.

Do you have a better recommendation in North America?

Dixie Mech or NovelKeys_ would probably be best options for vendors in NA

Let's not try an justify lost packages and extremely poor customer service... that's not a good look. Your experience clearly falls in the minority. You can tell this FACT, just by looking at the comments section on majority of the products they advertise... I myself have had several poor experiences with them before throwing in the towel.

If many people request it, it is still possible.

Hope this happens, the only reason i havent pick up a CRP set is caused by the lack of colevrak+ support

You are right, so can you do me a favor? Looking for a more accurate name?
How about "VIC II"? That is the name of the video chip in the C64, and thus associated to it.

This is the structural sample of bbox, not the final texture. At present, the development is very smooth. Many people care about the sound. However, the fixation of the sample and PCB is still being modified, so it cannot be tested. If there is a new trend, it will be updated.

Would you consider adding a vertical F-row, which would emulate the layout of C64 and fit on boards like J-01 ?
(this would mean additional rows for F3-F10)

Considering all the quality control issues with other key set manufacturers as of late, this has the potential to be one of the best key sets this year! great work! However is too much to ask for a standard base kit, ( ie alpha's and mods together at least)?

Maybe this is a silly idea, but have you considered for the case to add a simple placeholder with mx-stems so you can display the keys in case, without having to deck it out to a full board. I wouldn't use a board in that size, but it would like nice for display.

I love the inspiration behind the set, and the execution of the design is spot on.
I even appreciate that it's a completely dissimilar profile than the original C64 keycaps.

What I don't understand is the kitting. I'm not familiar with how CRP MOQ works so I can't really give any suggestions as to how to improve it without understanding the goal, myself.
2 sets of Alphas separate from a TKL kit seems fine I suppose. It's a good way to cover a popular format.

The Modifiers + TKL kit together is where I get confused. It seems like there's a ton of overlap and you're going to double up on a lot of keys just to get support for a 65% or non-standard 60% / HHKB / Tsangan layout. Meanwhile, there's an entirely separate kit of MAC mods?

Again I don't know anything about CRP MOQ so I don't really know how to better kit this offhand especially since I don't know how you are trying to achieve this or what the limitations are, so sorry I can't be more helpful at the moment.

Also, no 40's it makes me sad, but I'm glad to see a 2u and 1.75u in the modifiers kit at least.

I don't know about CRP/Hammer kitting details, but it appears to me that the Modifiers kits is essentially what is included in a typical GMK base kit outside of this set's TKL kit.

I'm guessing the idea is that standard TKL/75%/60% users can get away with TKL + Alphas, which should be at a lower price point than a comparable GMK-equivalent CRP kit. Not entirely sure though; the CRP sets I've been able to find prices for don't have comparable kitting.
