According to my daughter, the veterinarian, "It's definitely a crisis situation in livestock and poultry right now."

Keyboard Keycaps / Re: Recommend a Keycap Set

What kinds of profiles do you like? Do you want a second hand, vintage set that may be more unique? What color palettes are you looking for? What boards will they go with? Do you need RGB shine through keycaps?

That being said, my vote is always for a Signature Plastics SA profile keycap in whatever theme fits the board.

Other Geeky Stuff / Re: What video games are you currently playing?

bought The Last of Us Part 1 because i couldnt resist and i like to make myself sad

I maintain that that game is more cinematic experience and less game, but it's a story that everyone should experience. I told people after it came out if you don't have a PS5, go watch a playthrough becaue the story is just worth it.

Keyboard Keycaps / Re: How to have a custom keycap set built?
« Last post by TomahawkLabs on Wed, 15 May 2024, 10:56:13 »
How can one have a custom keycap set built?
By custom keycaps I mean keycaps with a custom geometry that doesn't exactly match the profile/shape/size of any existing keycap set.
I'm currently 3D printing such keycaps but I wonder how they could be built in (non-3D-printed) ABS or PBT.

The shape is not too exotic; they look kinda like this: https://adafruit.com/product/5111 but with some (nontrivial) differences.

Bonus question: how to add custom art/fonts/icons to the keycaps.

If you have to ask, it's too expensive. You're looking for a set of 100+ custom molds to be created for your unique keycap set. If you want doubleshot keycaps, it doubles the number of custom molds. You would be requesting a keycap manufacture to create brand new molds for for the profile you desire, plus the R&D of mold making. Unless you plan to sell your own keycaps using your unique profile, it would be cost prohibitive. I would expect no less than 10k and likely north of 15k for a one off, custom profile, injected keycap set.

With a few hundred to thousands of hours of work and access to a small desktop mill you could replicate what this user did and cast their own keycaps using lego and plastic/silicone molds.

Please consider text icon mods - or a separate kit for it at least. A set this nice deserves it!

Keyboards / Novel Features?
« Last post by Snipeye on Wed, 15 May 2024, 09:56:53 »
One of my favorite things about building keyboards is doing weird and novel stuff.

For example, in a recent keyboard I managed to shove 30 encoders onto the PCB.  It’s not useful, but it’s a bit interesting. Other examples: infrared decoding so you can use a remote control, combining a mouse and keyboard into a single device, Hall effect switches for analog inputs, motorized linear potentiometers, solenoids, etc.

I’m looking for more stupid things to shove into a keyboard. Any ideas?

Keyboards / Re: Unpopular Keyboard Opinions

Not OP, but I've been rocking the 6 column Corne for the last few months. I really can't see myself needing anything more / less outside of curiosity and boredom. Staggered columnar with or without a numrow is probably the best bet for most folks looking to try out non-traditional layouts.
I meant key layout (dvorak, colemak, etc.). I've thought about trying something else out but I'd either have to get used to potentially swapping back to QWERTY frequently or buy another programmable KB to drag around. With physical layouts I think it's best to go with with whatever feels most comfortable.
