you should!

Just gotta find a place and convince all the guys in the NYC area to drive to. My place is just shy of 4 hours from NYC.

The issue is that most of the western GH'ers are concentrated in California, so it's like a meetup from one city, with a few people flying in and such. Keycon chicago had most of the people in chicago of course, but with a surprising number also within driving distance. I'm not sure if there's a place on the east side of the US that is like that (with a good number of people can drive) NYC could work, but parking WILL be an issue.

Well maybe we could do it in Philly. That seems like more of a central point in between the main three states that people are coming from (NY, NJ, VA). PA is a pretty short ride by train from any of those places, a little longer driving but still pretty doable. It might be a little harder for really northern people or from NC and south though.

Alright, so maybe I'll host an outside poll to gauge it, but right now Philly kinda seems like the best solution. Are polls still banned?

I don't know how we've gone this long without it. We have so many people concentrated in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.
I'd like to start getting an idea of how many people we will get. So just say if you're in and which cities you could make it to if not all

I was planning on doing a visit to montreal sometime soon, perhaps in February of 2015.

I could maybe drive to philly, but it's a long drive so a hotel / friendly GH'er house is a must.

Poll is up.  If you choose Other, you must add a comment to specify (ie, it's required by the poll, not just by common sense :P ).

 :thumb:

I don't live over there, so if I went it doesn't really matter where it is.  I'm still driving/flying a long way.  I'd be down for anything, really.

Just keep in mind that the meetup should be held in a location that someone actually lives at and is familiar with. It's really hard to setup a meetup in a place you're not physically at.

Also I'm fairly sure I'll be in Montreal in December or January.

A new passport is about $140 (http://travel.state.gov/content/passports/english/passports/information/costs.html). Renewal is about $110. The waiting time is 4-6 weeks. You can get it faster but expediting costs more. If you're not using a passport too often, it might not be worth it to some to get a passport for this one trip.

I don't know everyone's personal situations but I know friends who don't have their passports since they don't travel and don't have the budget to travel internationally. I just thought I'd point this out.

It's not too hard, the biggest hurdle is time in my experience.  It doesn't cost that much, especially considering that you're already traveling to get there, most likely.

A new passport is about $140 (http://travel.state.gov/content/passports/english/passports/information/costs.html). Renewal is about $110. The waiting time is 4-6 weeks.

If you just want to go to Canada, you can get the Passport Card for much cheaper.  Also, holy crap, they are expensive now!  I paid $35 for my passport...

Also, the poll has been updated.  I switched the previous 'Other' to 'Montreal', to preserve those votes, and added a fresh 'Other' that has zero votes.  I cannot manually override the votes without setting everything back to zero.  As such, keep in mind that one of the 'Montreal' votes is actually for a different location.

Don't mind me, I'm just hungry and I can't stop thinking about Poutine thanks to the picture JPG posted.

For what it's worth, I voted for Philly, NYC, and Newark. I'm about an equal distance from all of them.

Just curious, does anyone in these area's have a space that we would be able to use for the hangout?

I'm in the DC area............., however to find a spot in DC, parking, traffic can be pretty horrendous. There are trains and buses that run all the time, but DC ain't cheap............hotels

A lot of my jobs use to be in DC, Northern Virginia.........anybody that is from the area knows this is bank

I don't know how many people are coming from MD, DC and then south of Virginia, but maybe Jersey or Philly could be a better option and closer to those who are to the north? We're only talking about 2 hours from DC. It doesn't have to be right in the city, but could be a burb?

I will be there............ I am in a wheelchair, so handicap accessibility would be nice

Gotta have some old dudes there to pick on?

Valley Forge PA area is built for meetings/conferences/conventions.  It's also just outside Philadelphia off of the mainline and accessible from/to all of the eastern major highways in PA.  Traffic is not terrible and the cost of rooms aren't bad.

Well, I don't know how many are actually coming from VA and DC but I know there are plenty from NOVA, and some from the south, which would probably be a train ride for somewhere like Philly or NYC. And DC is so expensive because everyone around there has quite a bit of money to spend :p
http://www.wtop.com/?nid=893&sid=3594972

edit: Philly really is sounding like our best bet right now.

Well I'm more comfortable with the people/area of philly and its surrounding burbs than I am DC/NYC.  I can't say that accounts for everyone.  The part I love about at least being around Philly is the trains are fantastic.  We can have a meetup in a less crowded area on the main-line, take a train into the city for any reason we want, all for $10 or less.

if you're talking central point, NYC is more central than philly for those in New England and those on the east coast.
Philly being west of those areas is a bit?

Also your best bet if you're gonna do NY/NYC is actually some suburb part of NY like either Long Island or Westchester.
NJ Suburb would be a good choice too.  Course the downside is you'd need to drive or setup some sort of carpooling service.

I do like to also mention there's been like an IC thread about a NYC Meetup that never got done lol.  Location and space is the main issue.  If someone's willing to open up their house to a bunch of strangers, that's prob the best bet.  Anything else would be questionable to lock up a venue.

Alright, so at this point, we're looking at probably either Philly or NYC, maybe NJ. As for location, while I'm sure there are a decent number of people in northern new England (like maine), Pennsylvania is right in the middle of the states where the majority will be coming from: VA, DC, NY, NJ, maryland, maybe some in OH. It also a little closer for people who may want to come from the midwest

Philly being west of those areas is a bit?

The entire east coast slopes west until you get down to VA... for those VA and south Philadelphia would be north/north-east.

I'm going to try and get a list together of places the meet could happen in/around Philadelphia.  Personally I'd love to be just outside of philly because it's easier to get around and do things in those areas than it is in the city itself.

i meant in terms of middle, the northeast will be going more west than the coast.
if its outside philly there's the whole transportation issue for those who'll be going mass transit.

If we're going KeyCon East it would be nice to keep it south enough (Philly) to attract those geographically at least to North Carolina. Still south NC you are talking about a 8-10 hour drive.

Philly is considered north east, so anything north of that would be a North East Keycon and us guys south of the Mason-Dixon line are out unless if flying. If the consensus turns out to be New York, etc. then maybe it would be wiser to do north east in spring of '15 and then go south in '16 in North or South Carolina, etc. and call it a South East Keycon?

Impossible to please everybody and cover where everybody lives on east coast.

Yeah, geographically philly seems like the best option right now

better to just go into northern virginia as it is right there and easier to get around should the consensus ever go to DC.

old town alexandria for example is right alongside DC, easy access with metro, buses, parking, hotels, plenty easy access for places to chow down.

if for example DC was ever chosen which venue would we choose..........$$$$$$$$$?

LPR

I've gotta ask what this means.  Google thinks it might be License Plate Registration, Laryngopharyngeal Reflux Disease, or (le) poisson rouge.  I'm leaning more towards the third option at this point, as that's a location in NY instead of a disease.  And I just now realized that I probably should have searched "LPR NYC" instead of "LPR".  But I'm not perfect, so I've gotta work with what I've got.

Agreed. If we're going to do an NYC meetup, it definitely can't be in Manhattan. Maybe at someone's house in the other boroughs or perhaps a venue in Queens/Bronx might work better. But I don't think NYC is ideal for a meetup for those who are driving.

Since Chicago is closer to me, that will definitely have priority [and I have already made several promises to people that I will be there].

My attendance at Keycon East depends how much time there is between the mid-west and east meetup.

IF

I have enough paychecks after Chicago

AND

there are no new keyboard customs created that suck my money

THEN

I can definitely think about a trip to the northeast. :thumb:
So Chicago for sure. But TBA about NE.

The first real concert I went to was Neutral Milk Hotel over the summer. Before that I wasn't all that interested in concerts, but that was one of the best nights I've ever had. There was so much energy in the crowd. Now I've got the concert fever. :p (though I wasn't able to grab tickets to the K.Flay concert I wanted to go to last sunday :'()

So I guess now would be the time to start getting an idea of what dates would work best for people. Right now, I'm planning on doing this sometime during the spring, between March and June. The end of May and beginning of June is probably off the table due to high school finals for people, colleges I guess vary? The only other thing that is for certain is it will be on a weekend. So just comment on any stretches of time that you could make it and what city (NYC, Philly, or Boston) would work best. I'll work on a comprehensive table over the coming weeks and determine the best date

NYC works for me.  May/June is mighty fine weather here in NYC too. If you come here you might meet a celebrity.  They're everywhere.  Last year I met Liv Tyler, and she gave me her mother's recipe for meatloaf for some reason.  I didn't tell her that I don't eat meatloaf.  She's totally awesome and super nice.  This really happened.

Yes I would love to Helmet Cam finally!!

And I would like this meet to be in Philly. I feel like that would be easier for people who are driving in, cheaper for a space, and not as hectic as NYC in general...not that I don't love NYC. Mainly, I'm angling for somewhere different to go :D.

And summer-ish time frame sounds good to me. May or June. I believe there was talk of Keycon Midwest being in March or April.

Edit: Changed Chicago to Midwest to appease the Hoff.

Places to have Keycon in New York City? I'm not in any position to offer up suggestions about that to be honest.

That being said, I think when we looked into spaces to hold meetups in general renting an hourly work space (http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/19/business/hotels-carve-out-work-spaces-rented-hourly.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0), typically for meetings, might work for us. Also hotel convention rooms but they'll be expensive as all hell in Manhattan. I highly suggest that if this is going down in NYC, we do it in one of the quieter outer boroughs like Queens or the Bronx where it would be a bit easier.

But perhaps one of our NYC members has a better idea.

So I don't want to promise anything, but I do have a friend who owns a recording studio in Philly.  I would like to see what's going on with him, and if we can get an idea of a date for this thing I can start checking out places.

Another option is to just throw it at my rent's place which would be an hour west of Philadelphia.  I've got connections as a local yokle.

In west Philadelphia born and raised
On the playground was where I spent most of my days
Chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool
And all shootin some b-ball outside of the school
When a couple of guys who were up to no good
Started making trouble in my neighborhood
I got in one little fight and my mom got scared
She said 'You're movin' with your auntie and uncle in Bel Air'

A lot of cons have been held in spaces which were graciously made available to us through some sort of close personal connection.  Regular spaces are expensive for the day or 2 days and have time limits.

He probably hit the Bronx or Manhattan to get to Connecticut. Depends on which bridges you take.

going through manhattan to get to ct seems a bit ridiculous, and having to pay a lot of different tolls options. (holland/lincoln to get into manhattan, then free either brooklyn/manhattan/williamsburg/59th st. bridge, or Triborough Bridge toll route and then either throgs neck or whitestone toll bridges to get out of queens)
more than just taking i95 and going across the GWB.

I've been thinking about a new presentation I could give and I thought something like a history of... or an Introduction to Alps would be fun. But those aren't my areas of "expertise". I covered what I think I'm best qualified to give information on at Keycon West 2014.

He's been in Portland for about a month, working with a friend. When he came back, he had a lot to catch up on at work.

He'll be active here again at some point, but he's way too busy for GH right now.

I didn't even know this was a thing.  I am intrigue.

I can't promise anything, and it's actually pretty unlikely as it's in a really not so great section of the city and parking would literally be the closest thing to hell you can imagine, but I can see if my school has any space reserved for these sorts of things.  I'm not even sure if they would be up for such a thing, but it couldn't hurt to inquire.

I didn't even know this was a thing.  I am intrigue.

Check it out over here (http://www.philadelphiapenshow.com/). You think keyboards are bad for your wallet? Fountain pens are much worse. I had a really good time at the Ohio Pen Show and I was contemplating going to the Philly one but I'm worried about snow and ice messing with the drive/air travel.

Yeah, those are reasonable concerns, from everything I've read, all indications point to a very snowy/cold winter.  Please do let me know if you do make the trip though, there's a lot to do here, and I would love to discover another hobby that hacks my wallet!  :D

No, but it'd be nice just to have an idea of where we'd be a little in advance. Binge said a few pages back he might have a house (not his own) in case we couldn't find anything else

Well we could always try and get another hotel space but it might be pricey. I think we might have better luck looking in one of the outer boroughs, Long Island, or New Jersey. Not 100% sure though. There are various websites that allow people to rent meeting spaces by the hour/day (One (http://www.evenues.com/Meeting-Spaces/new%20york/New%20York), Two (https://liquidspace.com/as/reserve/meeting-rooms/new-york?gclid=Cj0KEQjwvuuqBRDG95yR6tmfg9oBEiQAjE3RQMEMSKvIoCO5rlUxShhnhQCBT0uVm6XcAJnvPUsI4PMaAs9e8P8HAQ#%23q%3D%40latitude%3D40.7127837%24%40longitude%3D-74.0059413%24%40FeaturedAmount%3D0%24%40Campaign.Id%3D00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000%24%40IsFullTextSearch%3DFalse%24%40IsCurrentLocationSearch%3Dfalse%24%40SearchByANDCondition%3Dfalse%24%40VenueClassificationsString%3D%5B%5D%24%40WorkspaceCapacity%3D3%24%40SpaceTypes%3D1%24%40MinPrice%3D0%24%40MinSize%3D0%24%40ServerAmenities%3Dfalse%24%40Address%3DNew%20York%2C%20NY%24%40ReservationLengthMinutes%3D60%24%40mapLng%3D-74.00594130000002%24%40mapLat%3D40.712850246511216%24%40mapZoom%3D12%24%40trackMapCenter%3Dfalse%24%3B), Three (http://www.davincimeetingrooms.com/?gclid=Cj0KEQjwvuuqBRDG95yR6tmfg9oBEiQAjE3RQGD0qD_X6gZKckGfnYGNwgcRaGdJBzaAbYn-jVEkCq8aAtUI8P8HAQ)), but it might be easier to try and find a local NYC user who has access to a company office space. Perhaps eth0s?

Remember to keep in mind that anything in just Manhattan will be more expensive than the rest of NYC.

Also I could give my Alps presentation again or give a crash course presentation on CAD programs.

Why is the 22nd in the poll if you might veto that anyway?  I thought the whole point of a poll was to find what worked best for everyone.

Right now that date is kinda up in the air for me because of some abrupt changes. But if the amount of people that could only come on the 22nd is a decent amount higher than the other two, I'm sure I could find a way.

Based on the amount of people coming and when, my aunt has a penthouse we can use if it is in NYC. I'd have to ask her about it once location and dates are confirmed. I thought this might be a nice option instead of having to rent a place.

I think all you need is an american bank account..

Deposit $100,000  in any bank account, and i'm pretty sure they'll let you open any credit card you want.

If you Deposit $400,000,  they approve your Visa..

4 hours drive for me (depending on traffic.) I will be there if at all possible (and have 3 extra seats in car for people along the way)

If anyone has lodging I would very much like to hang with them, but I suspect parking will be the biggest issue.

If I was in town I would let you crash at my place. (Actually if you really need a place I'd let you crash her anyway) though I am about an hour drive from the city.

NEvermind, plane tickets are too much right now.

Well maybe we could do it in Philly. That seems like more of a central point in between the main three states that people are coming from (NY, NJ, VA). PA is a pretty short ride by train from any of those places, a little longer driving but still pretty doable. It might be a little harder for really northern people or from NC and south though.

I'm in NC and could probably swing Philly NP.

Oooooo! Dates are set! Awesome!

I'm definitely in. Have absolutely nothing planned that weekend and I'd love to meet you wonderful people :). So pencil me down for one.

Re: Venue. Are you still looking hwood? And what kind of venue are we looking for? I go to a number of meetups, most of the ones in Manhattan are at tech companies though. Not sure if we would want to have it there, or if they would let us. If we're willing to go to Brooklyn or Queens and are looking for a more relaxed scene with drinks, I know of two wonderful bars with large, dedicated upstairs rooms that they rent out for events. No idea if they would be booked, but the one in BK gives the space out for $50 for an entire day for a local JavaScript meetup, so it's pretty affordable. I also know the meetup organizers, so figuring out how to contact about renting the place shouldn't be an issue. I'll read this whole thread tomorrow and catch up and then find some other suggestions, but PM me if any of those things sound nice hwood.

If someone could drive me home afterwards that'd be great. Taking the subway from queens is not exactly fun.

I'll pay for gas, it's about 45-60 minutes away. You can come in and hang out if you want, noone will be home.

If not, that's fine. I'm not picky.

Just PM me and we can work something out.

Got to meet some awesome, nice people; see actual Clacks and KBK/KWK's in person; see a dope 456 case, SoWaRe, a KMAC, GMK Red Alert, Filco Camo, the list goes on; and dat Kishsaver... omg, greatest thing I've ever typed on, I really ****ing need one now. We also talked general keyboard facts, drama, etc. All in all: 10/10, excellent day, would do again (despite taking Ubers to get to and fro).

Extra props to Dodgy and Katzen for giving me some cool new caps (pics tomorrow, like 'Stache)!

We should definitely try to do this again sometime. Bare minimum, Keycon East '16 needs to happen.

So I wimped out on travelling to the city for this. Looks like everyone had a good time. I got to meet up with CLiB today to pick up the board for the Novatouch tour, so I guess I had my own mini-meetup.

Yea, this was a lot of fun! Thanks to hwood for setting it up, and thanks to everyone else for coming!

Bare minimum, Keycon East '16 needs to happen.

see a dope 456 case,

That was fun. Thanks all for organizing and taking the trip out. It was awesome meeting you all. :thumb:

It was great having Katzen and Dodgy in the place; they both make some pretty rad keycaps. I'm going to have my friend that I dragged along with to make an account and post some pics. He has two of Dodgy's caps on his Logitech board at home, and they look awesome. Light up brainz FTW!

Definitely need to have a Keycon East '16, bare minimum.

We should probably start organizing that now

I was stoked to show Sniping some legendary good eats in NJ. We hit up White Mana right before we dropped him off at the train station. I haven't had White Mana in yeeeeeeeears, and it's still so good. If anyone rides through northern NJ close to NYC, hit up White Mana in Jersey City, or White Manna in Hackensack. Legendary eats.

This looks like it was fun! I'm sad I missed it. I've been thinking about the possibility of organizing a meet up sometime this winter in the Northeast though, and this only makes me more excited to do so! Is this something people would be interested in? I was thinking perhaps Boston as a possible location, but Montreal also wouldn't be out of the question.

I couldn't make it. I wanted to.
My gf would have been with me.
At least one female would have been there.
Something came up at the last minute.

It's a sad excuse.
But, I really wanted to meet fellow keyboard enthusiasts who understand the love of keyboards. It's usually hard to explain my keyboards to the layman.

Plane tickets usually are cheapest for Jan/Feb flights, fyi, if you plan on having a Keycon in the wintertime.
