Title: Post your GH60!
Post by: jdcarpe on Mon, 28 January 2013, 12:40:56
Finished my prototype build today. Ordered a 1.5-mod stainless steel plate from The_Beast, sanded it, and painted it satin black. Installed it with Cherry plate mount stabs and PCB mount browns in a jdcarpurple treble318 alu case. Added Cherry black on beige keycaps. Here is the end result.

Pretty rad! Nice work jdcarpe :)

Surprised you didn't go for the short right shift you've mentioned a couple times, I'm assuming this is because no plates with that layout are available yet?

Awesome job! I really like that purple case! With this case and the toxic set it would be unstoppable. Good work!

Once the production boards are made, I'll be using the HHKB layout, most likely. I just wanted to get a quick and dirty plate on this, so I didn't have to deal with PCB flex anymore. The plate design is not perfect for this prototype board, but it works well enough for its intended purpose. There are 11 switches in this layout that are rotated 90 degrees. The switches fit into the holes in the plate, and mount to the PCB just fine, but the holes for the switch housing pins which allow you to open the switch without desoldering it are on the wrong sides of the switch. I don't often need to open my switches to swap springs/stems, so it's not a big deal to me for this prototype board.

Bottom line: it looks good, and the PCB flex is eliminated.

It's the beginning of the end isn't it? First the GH60, then I'm elbow deep in a KMAC, then I become Profosist-esque. Just a beast at soldering and assembling boards.  :p

Title: Re: Post your GH60!
Post by: jdcarpe on Mon, 28 January 2013, 19:38:21
Yeah, understandable. FWIW, the controller and SMD diodes/components will be pre-soldered to the board at the fab, so no need to worry on that front. Just need some PCB mount switches and someone's spare stock Poker case, and you're GTG.

GH60 with plate and case? so jealous of that.

though i may end up loving the ergodox more, my poker is my favorite keyboard now, even more than the HHKB, i don't use anything else. I just wish i had a plate and case; might as well wait til GH60.

i want to make a MX-HHKB, maybe even we can get a HHKB plate made :D perfect travel board for my extended trips.

Have you seen WFD's alu case and integrated plate? HHKB layout will be an option with that case.

Used http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/180724932018 leather spray to colour the case.  Dries in 15mins, I'm quite happy with the stuff.  Can't say how durable etc but its made for spraying on leather shoes to change their colour, so must be a little durable.

The windows keys were made by taking two pcb mount switches and removing the tops, the gold contacts and using some flush cutters to remove the plastic from around the top.  Then some squares of acrylic also sprayed.

Cherry sticker to finish off and it doesn't look too bad.  It's got blue switches with o-rings and switch stickers.

Also thanks to mm87 for the new case, I'll be using it when the groupbuy board drops in :) also the The_Beast who's been real helpful!

Apple beat dirge by almost 30 years lol as there are some versions of the Mac 128k keyboard in ISO. Definitely a nice build though dirge, top notch.

Though I am not sure if that was the first either, but certainly much before.

I can't wait to get my GH60 finished, as soon as WFD finishes up all those pesky diodes for me.

Yes, any Poker plate will work. If you want a standard ANSI layout. You won't be able to open some of the switches with the Beast plate without desoldering, since they are rotated 90 degrees. Unless komar is changing the design. But my plate design is like WFD's and has openings for the tabs on rotated switches also.

the joints are all good (i just tested the board -- see the betatesting thread). i solder with 0.025 and a loupe so i just made sure there was a joint and moved on; i didn't bother flowing across the pad unless that was the only way to make the joint.

If you are prepared to scrounge parts from used market, you could potentially get all your keycap, switch and stabilizer from an old G80 or whatever under $30, $20-30 for a plastic poker/pure case, and whatever the final cost of the pcb. I guess I would estimate $80-90 for such a build to be conservative and then up to whatever $400+ depending on case and keycap options and so on.

I'd say that the $100 is about right, I got my Phantom, through trades etc, for under $100 total.

I think lysol's layout is cool, and if it fits him then that's great. I wouldn't be able to use it because I use the Windows key and other keys primarily with my left hand. The only one that really requires the second hand is Win+L.
Title: Re: Post your GH60!
Post by: IvanIvanovich on Mon, 11 March 2013, 11:01:19
I have a huge focus on gaming. Left win is a nuisance, especially with a lot of older games that do not ignore it and you get dumped to desktop, often dying in the process. I had Lwin disable on my Pokers before, now I just don't even need to have that unwanted key there :) also I often do bind things to both control and alt in gaming, and having them next to each other this way is more comfortable and convenient.
At the same time I do find the win+ hotkeys very useful outside of gaming so total winkeyless was not ideal either. This layout was my solution to have it both ways as it were.

(I'm so sorry for horrible quality photo. My S3 can't deal with low light)

Once you kill your first PCB, you either give up forever, or become GREAT at soldering. Learning experience. :)

I'm sure my soldering could have been done a lot better than what I did, but I did it in two hours and with a pretty cheap soldering iron and tips. Just saying that anybody with a little patience and a little experience can do this. I do stress practicing on something you don't need or use, but that you can test after soldering and desoldering.
Now I want to get a soldering station like your new one :D .

I was thinking today (I know.. I should stop that ;) ), and I had a problem figuring out how I could have 1x windows keys instead of the 1.25 ones. Hmm.

Edit: And just as a sidenote. Be careful that you don't get spluttering solder in the eye! I got one piece that shot right into my glasses. Glad I wasn't wearing contacts while soldering xD. I'm guessing it's because my solder has a flux core.

I was thinking if you do a stem mod on a 10x space bar to make the stems match a 7x then you could do 1. 5 - 1 - 10 - 1 - 1.5

Was thinking about playing around with this. Not sure if the really long spacebar on a wyse terminal is 9.75 or 10. Anybody know? 9.75 could still work but you would have a small gap to either side I think. Idk still might play with this idea.

What WFD said. No practical reason. It's not like I have trouble hitting a normal spacebar, just think it would look cool. Also, I like the idea of a winkeyless layout, but I also like the look of a solid bottom row. The HHKB and wkl layouts have gaps and plugs and such. If I decide I don't like the long spacebar or want to add keys to the bottom row, I could just trade out the 10x for a 7x and add two more modifier switches. No need to alter the case.

Also, this is a way to get a wkl layout without having a special case top. But mostly it would just be for fun

They are replica. Replica implies just that: that they are replicated from the original. Olivetti or Dolch or etc. are so named because the originals came from something with that name. Anything that didn't come from that original location is a replica of the original.

They are replica. Replica implies just that: that they are replicated from the original. Olivetti or Dolch or etc. are so named because the originals came from something with that name. Anything that didn't come from that original location is a replica of the original.

Pedantic. ;D

Gratz!!! I dont see often ISO boards here and wouldnt be unhappy to see more of them.  ;D

Only one little thing....that isnt a "big-ass-enter". Its just the "normal" ISO-enter. A "big-ass-enter" you will find for example on the Steelseries Boards or some older vintage boards. As per DT-wiki (http://deskthority.net/wiki/Return_key) its also sometimes called "Asian enter".

I highly doubt it's plate mount since GH60 plates haven't been cut yet

So that would make it PCB mount cherry for stabilizers

^LOL.

Seriously jd, why can't you guys who are organizing this non-profit group buy and devoting so much of your spare time to it hurry up and get this done? It's not like we want the PCB to be error free and have all the bugs worked out before we go have 700 of them produced. I mean how hard is it really to add all the extra led support and other extras we demanded?

I jest of course. I'm anxious as well but I trust that it'll be worth the wait.

MOZ, I thought I saw that you were taking over someone's order? I know there will be a ton of these on the classifieds after they ship. I certainly don't need all six of mine, i just couldn't make up my mind! Once I figure out which ones I want to keep I'll likely sell a couple at cost.

It also looks like MK is talking about doing a run after the GB is over so people shouldn't have to wait long.

that is stunning, i would literally part with bodyparts to get my hands on one of those right now

hmmm...anyway to get some blocks for the open areas? that would make it perfect!

I heard some rumors someone was working on that but I guess we will have to wait and see.

wait we shall then :)

How do the DSAs work for you? And, did you have any problems fitting the PCB into this case?

I'm not really loving them for gaming since I seem to always be touching the key above it's side when I'm holding down a key. Typing is fine.

It also fits into the case just fine with the reset button on the bottom in the correct position so that you can hit it while the PCB is still in the case.

I have a bit more work to do on the switches. I've got lube and new springs to try.

Felt a bit blue today so I had to do something to cheer me up. (get it? blue! sorry i had to)

[attachimg=1][attachimg=2]

Only waiting on the PCB now. Setup will be Vintage Blacks on modifiers + spacebar and MX Whites on all other keys. Springs will be 68g gold, spacebar maybe MX Grey spring or something even heavier. Caps lock will be one of tins insane springs (so 150g or 300g). Titanium B-stock plate from mkawa, will be modded to be able to do to 2 keys instead of 2x backspace and then painted orange. LEDs will also be orange, but only on the inner keys to get a "glowing" effect - seen that somewhere on kbdmania more than a year ago.
Was thinking about going with a 10x spacebar instead, but this looks pretty neat with the orange I think.

I noticed that some of you have Hammer cases! Are they all compatible with all GH60 PCBs?

Yeah if you check out the first page, I asked dirge for pointers! Acrylic plate from ebay, cut with a rotary tool. I didnt make them exact but they do for now. Also I havent secured them in any way either.

Cross posting from the GH60 GB thread.

Here are my two boys; top one has Nixdorf blacks and is probably going to come with me to work, bottom one has Gateron browns and will stay at home and be a bit of a test bed for new switches or layouts.

I've decided to change the bottom one already, I can't get on with both the layout and switches. I'll probably be going with stock clears and 1.5u bottom row mods and a 6u spacebar.

Yeah, it was a bit of an experiment, I saw it on Ivan's board and thought I'd give it a go.

That's what I like about custom boards, 15 minutes with a soldering iron and you've got something totally different.

Looking great JD; but that layout, I use to like the winkey-less style layout, a lot; but; but, since I realized that the 7u space bar is totally out centered in relation with the GH middle line, it becomes too obvious that it is wrongly placed for the typing home position. It is just one of those small things that became a bit annoying after you are aware of them.

Interesting. So Whitefox colorway, DSA caps (I presume just those dye-sub sets from the website, no?), custom cable (from who?), and a Pok3r case! I'd love to know more.

Details:
I wanted a 60% because of ergonomics (annoying recurring triggerpoint problems in my shoulder area) but I couldn't do without arrow keys.
Whitefox colors because of the neutral colors. I debated on purple but decided to go for blue, I might order purple ones in the future. The lay-out I already had in my mind before I found out about the whitefox. Another option was white/gray but there are a lot of keyboards around with that color scheme as well.

Hardware:
Red cherry MX's which I 'salvaged' from a cherry mx board 3.0. I actually bought it 2nd hand on amazon.de and desoldered all switches.
DSA caps incl blue dye-sub caps from Signature Plastics/pimpmykeyboard.com - 60% base Set, ISO base set and ISO modifier set to get all the necessary keys.  (Are DSA caps exclusively from Signature Plastics?)
USB cable is Paracord Caribbean Blue double sleeved with white Techflex ordered from Pexonpcs.co.uk
Led's and resistors from my local electronics shop and sipsockets and some free white leds from maxmech.nl. It has 1 red LED under ESC, a blue one under CAPS, 4 white ones under arrow keys and a green one under FN key ( \| keycap )
The rest of the hardware (pcb Rev C, plate, case) I ordered from Falbatech.pl
Easy AVR for the firmware.

That's about it.
