[IC] Pulse SA - Round 3
« on: Wed, 07 March 2018, 13:31:47 »

Alphas

Three distinct selections to pick from – regular legends, inverse color scheme and nordic runes – Dieter Rams kit from Canvas XDA.

Modifiers

Two different options – classic text or exclusive Micons convention modifiers from Canvas/Godspeed XDA, also the standalone numpad.

Hobbyist & Exotic

The Hobbyist kits are standalone kits for 60% keyboards and extension for TKL form factors and above. The Exotic kit is an extension for odd & snowflakey layouts.

Ortholinear & 40%

These are standalone modifier kits for ortholinear and 40% keyboards, such as OLKB Planck & Preonic, Vortexgear Core and several others.

Split

Available in two different options – blanks & legended, these are standalone modifier kits for split keyboards such as Infinity ErgoDox, Kinesis and others.

Languages & Systems

Extension kits for international users, different languages, efficiency layouts and operating systems.

Decoration

These kits provide the user with alternate options for keyboard ornamentation. There are logos from Nico Tzogalis in opaque and translucent options. The classic megaphone, printer and trash can designs made a return from the previous rounds, with the addition of the Cyan Cross. The Arrows kit comes with bold and ergonomic arrow options. There are communities coats of arms and also a monolegend number row, for a minimalistic look.

Spacebars

Extra spacebars to substitute shine or complement Alphas/Zambs/Rams, depending on the specific layout and kits selected. Also a small selection of Blanks to act as spacebars for Planck, etc.

Mitolet

This exclusive monokit is designed in the 2.2.3.3.3.3 spherical profile configuration from Signature Plastics, for those who find the 1.1.2.3.4.3 configuration too aggressive. Similarly to what I’ve done with Godspeed SA.

It features a custom recipe for the shade of violet with the resin pigmentation fine tuned by me – result of Legacy DSA & Laser GMK sampling phases.

The Mitolet monokit is designed to provide adequate layout coverage for some 40% keyboards and the vast majority of ANSI and WKL 60%, 65% and standard TKL keyboards – such as Vortexgear Core & Poker, Tokyo 60, Rama M60A, Tada 68, KBD 75, Keycool 87 and plenty of others.

Merchandise & Comissions

From custom merchandising, sleeves, hand made artisan keycaps to stickers and other keyboard items, if you are interested in contributing with your talents and know-how, please drop me a message (mito.rmk@gmail.com) – I would love to hear your ideas and help you bring your vision to reality. Lots of community members got involved in the Laser GMK project, hopefully we can work together!

And it’s people like Oblotzky that make a thread a million times better, lol. Thank you for the laugh!!

@Mito,

I love Mitolet, but would be happy if it included the needed HHKB/Winkeyless keycaps. (R1 1u |\, 1.5 CTRL/ALT, 7u Spacebar, etc.)

I’d honestly prefer (1.1.2.3.4.3) as well.

+1 for CAPS, instead of KAPS.

Just my 2 cents!

Maybe I just didn't notice it, but it seems none of the kits have the R1 1u |\ key for HHKB style layouts.  Was that R2 one in the exotic kit supposed to be R1?

Woah, that image got edited before I posted. Were the community keys originally in the novelties, and was a DT key produced?

Okay, looks like a DT key was produced. Please include it in the communities set! And +1 for the alternate image keys for insert/delete, home/end, PageUp/PageDown. Maybe they could go into the "arrows" kit if they don't belong in novelties any longer?

What year will this ship? I have a five year-old, will SP produce this in time for him to see it before he goes off to college?

Still, though, interested. Especially in the runics. Agree with others that Mitolet seems like it should be a separate thing.

Sorry but why was this moved? It's going to highly impair the thread's success and by association the hype generated around the set because no one ever reads this sub-forum when compared to IC. Which is what this is, an interest check, regardless of whether or not it's affiliated with Massdrop.

I think it was  supposed to be the  one in Exotics, but he marked it r2 instead of r1.

At your service, hope you enjoy the stay in this hobby and it brings you lots of satisfaction and joy. We love keyboards!

GMK pulse when

Thank you very much for the input Puddsy, really appreciate it. The idea for the monokit was to bring something unique and a bit exclusive to the project, in order to offer the Cockpit setup variation for those who don't like the usual 112343. I don't exactly see why we would need all kits done with that, I'm under the impression that everything I envisioned for it is already covered - will add a couple 1.5u's and of course the 7u SPC. This way we will cover a lot of people without having a solo buy, a huge kit or expensive kits broken down. It' just an extra flavor, to offer a cool new product.

As for KAPS, I thought it would be funny to have a stylish keycap like that. KAPS as a reference for KeycAPS because let's be honest - who really needs a proper CAPS LOCK anyway? Double word modifier, rarely used keycap... Let's add some style there, make something unique! As for Pulse GMK, things are shaping nicely for that, I think we gonna have a very dope version on the profile, once it's all ready and figured out the way I like it to be. We are concluding the Laser stuff, too.

I love Mitolet. So much purple coming out lately!

💜 ~> this is a purple heart emoji, I swear.

Already have plenty of PuLSE, myself, but...nice!

I might need those minibars or a 40% kit

Thank you very much for the interest JD, you know it.

So excited to add more to my PuLSE collection! This is the set that hooked me. <3

I love the artwork you've got man, Krytone such a beast. At your service, immense honor that you enjoy the project, can't even put it into words. Hope you enjoy the hobby as much as possible and keep being happy and positive!

I know it might be going out on a limb... but is there a possibility the ErgoDox/ErgoPro kit could be done with icon mods instead of text mods?

I know Ergo caps with legends are difficult because everyone has their keys mapped differently, but I feel like the icons are artistic and abstract enough that it wouldn't matter how the keys were technically labeled because the presentation would be so good.

That aside, it's a great set and I'm in!

I would really like to ask if Mitolets be in the same SA fully sculpted keyset.  It's difficult to do flat perfectly with greater than a 60% which is why I keep godspeed all blue. I do have the cockpit kit too but sculpted just fits custom boards so much more nicely and is easier to get compatibility with the Extras kits. I get the desire to offer an alternate for ortho and ergodox users but the loss is felt harder on all the other keyboards and keyboard customs that would go with the colorway. I am really loving that designers have shifted toward keeping a "common" fully sculpted keyset (seen that positive change take place over the last two years) and that really makes it more possible to be more creative with mixing sets as opposed to only having one style possible because two designers used different SA profiles. Sets are expensive as it is not to mention the time to production so it would be nice to consider this if the community supports it.

If anyone else agrees, please speak up in the IC.

I know Ergo caps with legends are difficult because everyone has their keys mapped differently, but I feel like the icons are artistic and abstract enough that it wouldn't matter how the keys were technically labeled because the presentation would be so good.

That aside, it's a great set and I'm in!

I second the icon Ergodox idea! I always see complaints about ergo text mods not matching customized layouts, and I think icons would solve that and also look fantastic.

Probably also going out on a limb....

Any chance for a 6.5u Spacebar for those of us using corsair keyboards?  :-[

Signature Plastics does not have a mold for this Spacebar size.

I LOVE those colors on the mito kit. Wish it was fully sculpted, might have to just use the different row 1 and 4 from the normal kit and see how it works out. That purple is beautiful

Oh well... Just ordered parts for my first custom mechanical and this pops up. Guess I need 2 keyboards...

Is it only the Mitolet that comes in the 2.3.3.3.3 option
or does the pulse also comes in 1.2.3.4.3 and 2.3.3.3.3.

I think the mono kit should be expanded to provide enough black keys to cover the whole top row on at least a 60%. This would entail minimal additions of a black esc, 1u backspace and 2u backspace. That way we could use zambs and modifiers with an all black top row :D

Would it be possible to get 1 extra R3 key in the rams set? The rune symbols are pretty interchangeable but getting a extra R3 using a R2 symbol will make it work with Dvorak and Colemak without having to use duplicate keys.

Hey mods, surely you're monitoring the thread/section (if you're not then we have an even bigger problem), how about we actually start listening to community feedback, facing the facts and just revert things back to how they were? You can revisit this faux "solution" at a later stage once you actually make up your mind as for what you want to do with ICs and once other vendors actually get their threads moved to their sub-forums instead of ostracising Massdrop for no valid reason.

You had your experiment, maybe the timing just isn't right and it's okay to be wrong. I think we can all agree with the fact that if this were to be in the IC forum this would be at least 5 pages long by now and instead its gotten like 1 reply a day. Just let it go, all you're doing it retracting attention from Geekhack since everyone just goes to MD to discuss this instead.

We don't need a full month or however long to gather data to have definite proof that the literal only reason you wouldn't revert this change would be because you don't wanna give in and admit it's a ****ed up thing to do.

Apologies for being off-topic, but what was the rationale for moving ICs. It seems pretty dumb to me. IC's, by their very nature, are vendor neutral. If an IC never goes to GB, how is there a vendor?
What if an IC expresses intent to run on MD but MD doesn't accept the IC and it ends up getting run somewhere else?
Really just an all-around bad decision.

Tweaks:
• Added R1 1u \ | keycap to all Alpha kits (for HHKB layout compatibility);

• Swapped R1 1u PG DN from Text Hobbyist & Icon Hobbyist for R1 1u PG UP;
• Added R2 1u PG DN to Text Hobbyist & Icon Hobbyist kits;
• Added R4 1u SHIFT to Text Hobbyist & Icon Hobbyist kits;
• Added R1 1u PN to Exotic kit (Vortex Race compatibility);
• Added R4 1u SHIFT to Exotic kit;
• Added R1 1u ESC and R1 1u BKSP to Ortho kit;
• Added R3 1u CTRL and R3 1u ALT to Ortho kit;
• Added R4 1u SHIFT to Ortho kit;
• Added R1 1u "2 to Norde kit;
• Added a Mac kit;
• Added punctuation keycaps to Mono kit;
• Added Blanks kit;
• Expanded Mitolet kit towards winkeyless compatibility (7u bottom row, 1u REKT,  1u \ |);

Developing:
• Black modifier kits (Text Noire & Icon Noire);
• Novelties - studying inclusion of the old Round 1/2 pictograms.

Disclaimer:
Several other suggestions were considered and studied, some of them I even added. But when balancing things out, I decided not to include them, to make things affordable and more straight forward to everyone all things considered. Hope you understand!

Please keep suggestions coming, feedback is greatly appreciated and I will keep doing tweak runs per your requests.

Coming next:
I'll be fixing some keyboard renders and displaying more combinations this week (12th March ~ 19 March).

There are four modifier styles (Text Blue, Icon Blue, Text Noire, and Icon Noire), but only Text Blue has an R4 1.25u key; one in the UK kit and one in the Norde kit. I don't mind if it's a blank key or an icon key, but could a black R4 1.25u key be included somewhere? A lot of 40% keyboards use a R4 1.25u key and I want to be able to kit my Vortex Core out in properly sculpted Icon Noire, if possible. I've used R3 keys as stand-ins on my Core before and IMO it just doesn't look or feel right.

I do really love the Icon Noire look and hope to see a render of it with Rams alphas!

Thank you very much for the feedback Chuck, I'm gonna be working on some visualizations for this combo coming next.

I see what you're talking about, the thing is that I had to restrict the international communities to the most fundamental/recognizable color scheme of the keycap set (cyan & black). So offering all combinations wasn't possible, it will only make everything more expensive. I gave it a try on Godspeed XDA and we sold over 7,400 kits but only four Lunar Norde Kits. Hope you understand. As for you request, there's a R3 1.25u black keycap on the Blanks kit, please verify and let me know if that works for you!

The point of the mono kit is to have a set that is completely mono-legend. Numrow has dual legends and so do the punctuation keys.

I get what you mean, but as a counterpoint, SA Oblivion had three modifier styles with two alpha colors and sold twice as many UK kits as XDA Godspeed with 1k fewer total orders. I don't think fully-maxed out kits is the best move, either, but there's a middle ground somewhere. As the kits stand right now, if someone wanted a Zambs UK ISO set, for example, they could hack it together with the current kits and just deal with the inaccurate legends while having the correct row/size/color, but the same is not possible for the black modifiers because there is literally no black 1.25u R4 or R2 key, regardless of legend. If I could, I would order a blank directly from SP, but they haven't been in stock for a while.

MiTo,

The Text Hobbyist kit still contains a 1U R4 PgUp that should be a PgDn.  The icon in the corresponding Icon Hobbyist key is a down icon.  This looks like simply a mistake in the Text Hobbyist kit.

@mito Everything looks amazing and it is awesome to see how much feedback from the community you have incorporated into the sets already! I'm curious though, have you ever given a thought to doing like a roman numeral set to go along with Dieter Rams? I understand they might need molds made (doubt the normal I, V and Xs could be used), so they might not be for this set, but perhaps the next dye sub set you do with the rams as an option? I feel like I,II,III,IV,V,VI,VII,VIII,IX, and maybe just X even though it stands for 10 would work, no? I could see the VIII being difficult to fit on a 1u. Maybe making up something like IIX if it would fit. Anyway, I think they might go a lot better with the rams set than the monos. Just a thought, but awesome set either way and thanks for the upcoming chance to get a hold of them!

Nordic people did not like writing numbers down, but when they did they definitely did not use roman numbers for it. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dftS6agMeLY/Uv1R45sHkZI/AAAAAAAABgE/jW_c5oCSjEk/s1600/Runic-Numerals-Ed.jpg
Keep it as it is, or at least make up something remotely accurate instead of mixing different ’old’ notations without thought.

Point taken. However, my statement wasn't thoughtless. I respect your dedication to the integrity of the runes' historical uses, but my thought was completely based on aesthetics. I feel the straight lines of roman numerals might go better with the runes. Seeing as how the Rams set was created as a "novelty add-on that celebrates the GOAT of industrial design school and his contribution to modern society," I don't think the point was to be historically accurate, but to make a set with a bit of history to it that uses simplicity to please the eye as an homage to Dieter Rams.

Seeing as how the Rams set was created as a "novelty add-on that celebrates the GOAT of industrial design school and his contribution to modern society," I don't think the point was to be historically accurate, but to make a set with a bit of history to it as an homage to Dieter Rams, that pleases the eye.

The Pentimal system symbols would be more fitting, I think.

Fair enough. I just don't like the look of combining a font without serif's to another one with them and roman numerals look awkward when done with a font without serif's. The nordic runes would look very strange if someone added serif's to them  :).

My gripe with the runes kit is that I don’t like how it stretches the elder futhark to 26 characters, by just doubling Kaunan and Wunjō.

There are a lot of other options, such as
  • Glyph variants employed in the Elder Futhark: ᛝ, ᚻ, ᛊ (epsilonoid shape) (I think these are best)
  • Anglo‐Saxon runes: ᛥ, ᚸ
  • Runic punctuation: ᛫, ᛬
  • Simple bind runes

Also the the characters themselves seem to vary in size a lot compared to extant inscriptions — some (ᛜ, ᛞ, ᚲ) are a lot bigger than most sources make them and some (ᚦ, ᚹ, ᛒ) are relatively tiny

However, I do love the idea of a rune kit and I think this may be my first time joining a Pulse GB because of it.

This IC mainly serves as a forum for feedback, there have been plenty of suggestions and resulting changes to the kits due to that already.

Any reason no number pad is being offered in the purple mitolet option? It will look odd with the other number pad in Black normal profile. Please consider a numpad to match this beautiful set.

I believe he stated that the Mitolet set is meant as a standalone 40%-TKL kit. While I would like the flexibility of having a numpad, I love the idea of a set geared toward covering the vast majority of small boards so that you can get away with one set for the majority of them. Usually have to buy like 2-3 sets just to cover these small boards, so this set is really appealing to me (doubly because of the profile). Plus, that purple... Also, I think that I saw a reply from Mito at one point to not worry if you like that colorway, but not that specific set layout because a full SA Laser set is planned at some point in the future.

How does this cover 40% boards like the Planck or MiniVan? I can see the TKL, but the Mitolet kit is missing certain keys to make it appropriate for smaller boards. Either way, I'm probably getting it...but it would be nice to have a numpad in the same color.

In SA Godspeed with the cockpit set, you had to purchase the 40% set also.  That might not be applicable since it's a different color in this case, or maybe he needs to make a 40s set for Mitolet?

But that would add more kits and would almost make sense to run Mitolet by itself. I think adding numpad keys would only help it as a stand alone kit

I agree with this completely. Big boards are on the rise, and I, along with many others, already have normal pulse. That purple kit would be the only reason I would join this round, but without a number pad to match it is a big no for me. I’m not in to smaller boards so as much as I love the keyset, I feel it would be an incomplete set for me. Maybe run a pull just to gauge interest to see if it would be worth your time ? I truly feel you are cutting out half your player base by not offering the accompanying sets in that awesome color. 😢

They banned Mito? Well i won't get into the politics of that, but I first learned of Pulse on geekhack. That is too bad.

The discussion of Pulse on MD is turning really negative, which I disagree with. People seem to want every single option in a keyset, for every single keyboard made, in every single Pulse colorway possible, for the cheapest price possible if not cheaper, and that's not really how life works. But I guess i said my peace and will enjoy the Pulse keycaps I ordered.

I think the TKL (black alphas + normal mods) is $109 shipped. It is all the child kits that seem to be higher than normal, but not that much higher compared to a set like Carbon. But people can still get a TKL or standard 60% keyboard filled for about $100. I guess the negativity is about pricing. This is already a successful group buy in terms of orders, I just don't see why there is so much bad blood going around.

You're right, thanks. Either prices have hit lower price points since I first tried, or I had made a mistake in picking my sets. It looks like it's in line with other SA sets now. TKL+arrows+novelties is $162 shipped.

What would I be starting? Someone asked a question, I answered. I don't think I need to forward any kind of proof or justify myself for relaying information pertinent to a question someone asked. Maybe he can come forward and confirm/deny, seems he's been pretty quiet since the introduction of the Noir kits a month ago.

PS: I think this thread being active is an infringement of the rules, not sure why a mod hasn't locked it yet. Or Mito, if he can.

Suppose people don't ever change ey.

Or do they?

Would've thought someone who's been on the internet for so many years and from such a young age would be aware of how IPs and forums work and would not endanger what is a big part of their life to insult someone who can impact or entirely halt his participation in a relevant channel.

Quirky situation is it not, usually you know which side of a conundrum like this you can put your faith on.

And again, shouldn't this thread be closed down? The issue of Mito not closing his Laser thread at the appropriate time being brought up as a big issue that led to conflict and/or warnings at the time/later on. I'm not trying to call out Signature (whom I believe to be a good guy and appropriate for the position of an actual mod) on not doing his job, I'm just saying firstly consistency is important to not appear biased and secondly permanating the circlejerk when only one side of the corral is able to defend themselves is hardly proper in any case.

Yes MiTo is banned from GH for bothing making alts (we have proof via IP) and for harrassing staff members via those alts.
IP isn't proof. It's circumstantial at best. What if someone else was simply using the same computer?

That was an oversimplification of many reasons (over few years) for which he was banned.  Also, to clear a misconception, when we look at potential alt accounts, we don't only take IP addresses into consideration.
