Title: [GB] Golbat Round 2 (Final Round) - SHIPPING SOON
Post by: GL1TCH3D on Tue, 10 January 2017, 13:57:21
YYou should be receiving an invoice to the SAME email you used to pay for your original Golbat invoice.

DO NOT BE ALARMED BY THE AMOUNT OF THE INVOICE.

I've set the invoice to allow **partial payments** so that the same invoice can be used regardless of your shipping location and in the end if I need to quote you a price you just make a partial payment in the amount of the quote.

This lets me still receive your shipping information with a single default invoice and I can mark the invoice as complete after the partial payment is made.

If you **DID NOT** get your invoice for shipping message me immediately with the email you used for the Golbat R2 original payment, the invoice number and your order details (color / plate / add-ons)

Thanks! If you have any other questions post below because I'm sure they've passed through someone else's mind too!

Shipping period is July 15th to 24th. Please pay before the 14th so that I can prepare address labels for before I go!

The shipping address I will be using is the shipping address that I will be getting with your SHIPPING INVOICE PAYMENT (the new invoice). So if you've moved / changed addresses do not worry! (Last time I went by the original address that I received months earlier and it was a mess when people moved!)

Edit: If you had special arrangements you wanted made please remind me of them THIS WEEK so I don't forget.

Make sure to read all the information in the form header to avoid confusion.

Some notes about the Golbat:
The golbat keyboard is a 40% keyboard in either "standard" or "HHKB" format.

Feel free to visit the interest check thread https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=84742.0
Also feel free to visit this link for an example of the HHKB style Golbat. http://imgur.com/a/vF6ca

Key differences from Round 1:
1) Upgraded PCB with RGB underlighting.
2) Carbon Fibre options.
3) Higher price (increased costs / fees that we missed last time).
4) Ability to purchase only the HHKB plate without having to buy the standard plate.
5) Ability for more layers in the firmware

New pricing (all in USD):
Base kit (with either HHKB or Normal plate): $99. Note, for R1 the HHKB kit was always additional on the base kit with normal plate, this is no longer the case. You can purchase EITHER the HHKB or Normal 40% top plate in the base kit.
Additional metal plate (HHKB or Normal): $20
Upgrade to black carbon fibre for the base kit: $25
Upgrade from black carbon fibre to other color (requires the upgrade to black carbon fibre): $5
Add another carbon fibre plate in any color or style: $30
Additional acrylic mid section (any color): $18 23 (UPDATED 10/1/2017! Didn't account for the cost of acrylic in the insurance / fees)
RGB Leds: FREE! (Will be presoldered)
NOTE: Last time shipping from China was billed separately but now it's included in the base kit price.

Some things to consider:
Last time a lot of people noted that the images for the acrylic did not accurately reflect the acrylic they received. The biggest issue was that the acrylic turned out much more opaque than expected. Consider ordering both a transparent acrylic (you have RGB LEDs stock on the PCB) as well as an acrylic in the color of your choice. Or just a transparent acrylic and rely on the underglow. Or something that in the images looks more transparent than you'd want.
We do not sell individual parts without the base kit. This was requested in the past and both GFW and I agreed that organising for lots of little parts would be too much.
The board is manufactured wholly in China (where it is also designed).
It will be shipped to me in Canada where I will ship it to the buyers.
In-switch LEDs are standard and not RGB.
This purchase does not include switches or in-switch LEDs (PCB lighting is included as well as diodes + resistors).
Last time GFW was kind enough to throw in a little toolkit and some spare parts (screws, diodes, etc.) however there is no foreseeable third round for the Golbat. That being said I will order spare parts and keep them on hand for emergencies. The spare parts will only be black aluminum, PCBs, transparent acrylic. There are simply too many options for acrylic and case plates to cover everything.

If you have any other questions feel free to leave them below and I'll try and answer them. I extended the length of time for the form to be open from feedback last time so I can get more questions answered and make sure nobody misses it :)

Other notes: I've been kind of out of the mechkeyboard game for a few months due to finding my "end game" and just being extremely busy with school and work. But I look forward to posting more pictures and such!

what is the expected lead time for production and shipping?

Shipping ended up a bit later than expected last time. I'm going to say April-May since I'm a bit more organized from the experience of R1.

On the form where it lists the colours for aluminium, black is there, but it's not available as an option or on the photos. I'm guessing this is an error. If I want black or red then carbon fibre is my only option?

Do you think you will be able to ship these out before April? My lease ends on that month and I have to move out is why i'm asking. Cheers.

Q: How is the RGB controlled / how customisable is it?

Which acrylics should I be looking at if I want a (heavily) "tinted car window" look? 5021 is looking like the best bet right now, there are others but I'm thinking that they are brown-tinged?

Edit: I'm not sure how bright the LEDS in the photo of 5021 are, would the underglow LEDS be as bright (or brighter)?

Just submitted an order -  hopefully I'm just in time.

EDIT: I'm a dingus so I submitted two updated orders - the most recent one (where I call myself a 'nuisance') is the proper one.

The buy is open until the 31st right? I still need to choose my Acrylic colour...

The form is still up and payments aren't due till the 31st, so I would assume so.

Hey quick question, does the carbon fiber upgrade apply to both the top plate and the bottom? Second, can I have the LEDs not added to mine, or do they come like that from the supplier?

EDIT: Also one thing I'm a bit confused about is the plate layout for HHKB. It supports split space, I'm assuming, but do I have to specify that anywhere?

Can I confirm if my order went through correctly?

I'll PM you my paypal address if that helps. I filled out the form with my username here but when I check the form now it doesn't say response recorded or submitted, just takes me to a fresh form.

Really wanna get in on this.

Split spacebar and standard spacebar are supported either way. There's no specific plate for the split spacebar or anything. The same
PCB is used in any setup.

Any advise re: my acrylic question?

Generally the photos make the acrylic seem a bit brighter / more transparent than what you'd see IRL from underlighting on the board.

Can I confirm if my order went through correctly?

I made it so the form starts fresh so that people aren't changing / editing their orders while I'm invoicing to cause confusions. In the end you'll get what's listed in the invoice (I list all the parts / colors) so if the invoice isn't what you want contact me ASAP.

Alright, good to know that. I did message you on Reddit about invoices being sent out a few days ago, you said to anticipate having more sent out this weekend. I still haven't been invoiced which is why I was concerned that maybe my order didn't go through.

Just want to get things squared away. I always like to make my payments as promptly as possible.

I'm a bit worried about how reliable the software on this board is, and how active the developers are to issues. Is this board easy to flash? Were there any issues with the first board that have now been fixed.

Invoices are going out today. Please check the invoice before paying to make sure the right parts are listed and that none of the parts show as $0 (specifically the additional top plate line). Better to fix the invoice before paying than have to refund and issue a new one.

If you don't get an invoice and you know you submitted an order, PM me.

I sent out reminders to all the members who haven't paid for their orders yet.

I will be closing all unpaid invoices and preparing the order for GFW. I will contact you if there were issues with the order. Otherwise, if there were no issues, I will submit the order this Friday.

Thanks to everyone that participated. I originally said that this is the last round of golbat so there would be almost no access to spare parts but GFW and I have potentially new products so replacement parts could come from there. I will still keep spare parts on hand for immediate replacements though.

I'll be out of town for a week for job training (got a nice job!) so if you need to reach me then discord is best at @GL1TCH3D#9762

Its basically better skype / teamspeak and runs in a browser.

I have not been getting email notifications lately from PMs on GH but knowing that I try and check the GB threads and PMs regularly if any questions or situations arise. I ordered 3 full base kits (out of pocket) as spare parts should people have defects. Ill be inspecting the kits when they arive and checking them against the order before shipping.

This time around I want to have a confirmation / exit survey to make sure your board / kit works when you receive it because I had people PMing me that they bought R1 units secondhand on ebay that were DOA so to make sure everyone gets a working unit, do check the package asap when you receive it. Its a long way out because its still in manufacturing.

Cheers

If there's a leftover base kit I can sell it at the group buy price. Otherwise last round 2 people sold their orders so it is always possible.

Important update. The shipment of the boards will be delayed on my part. The change in exchange rate will cause the import taxes into canada to be much higher than planned for so I will have the parcel shipped to a family member's place in the USA where I will be visiting in July and will complete the shipping at that time. This is to avoid having 3rd parties involved or extra costs. It will however change the cost of shipping but should generally be the same for North America.

I will be shipping out the keyboards the week of the 14th of July. My flight down is booked so I'll take a day from my vacation time to do this  :'(

I'll be sending out the invoices for shipping costs in the coming weeks so that I can get the funds out in cash for when I go down (to pay the shipping) since I have a feeling PP will very annoying with regards to my ship from address being US if I try and pay from my PP account (I'll test it this week).

Please make sure to pay before the 14th because I don't want to carry more than 4 keyboards back (1 prototype for his new project + 3 complete boards for spare parts).

Thanks!

Does this mean US residents will get a cheaper shipping rate than initially anticipated?  ;D

It's possible but I haven't checked the prices yet. Canadian and US prices were always very similar.

So this took a lot longer than I expected. Unfortunately GFW did not separate the orders for me like he did last time so I had to sort them manually. While opening the box I got a cut that required stitches...

2 people had acrylic in bad condition. Basically one person is not getting the frosted acrylic like they requested. This person ordered other colors so I will contact them about that. Likewise the person that ordered pink... Well they got 2 different colors of pink for some reason.

I only have 1 spare PCB not 3 like I ordered so be very careful with your PCBs when you get them since I may not be able to send a replacement.

Shipping will take longer since I don't have boxes like I expected to have. I will have to get boxes from the post office. I will probably extra pack the USA orders in bubble wrap and use prepaid bubble mailers. I'll update more as I figure out the shipping situation

Shipped all USA orders. Post office was hastling me about customs forms and I don't have a printer.

There are only a few Europe and Canadian orders so I will bring those back with me and ship them from Canada (no I wasn't ignoring your shipping quote requests).

I wrote down all the shipping info before leaving on vacation. I suspect all the USA orders will be delivered before I get home. If you want to pm me with your zip code and invoice # I can get it from the receipt otherwise I will not be adding each one individually.

The board has been built and it feels super solid with Kailh's new box white switches. :thumb: In my layout all the keys with a blue front legend are dual role. Tap for the black text legend and hold for the blue text legend.

Though I cannot seem to get a response from the right shift/period key. There was one instance where it spat out periods shortly after spamming it during testing like if it was
lagging behind and catching up but that was it. I flashed it first as a dual role key then just as a regular period key thinking that maybe I'm doing something wrong in the fn keys section in the map generator. No good. Then I swapped the switch out with another one thinking that it was a faulty one. Still not working. Other than that one spot on the board every other key works fine.

Another issue is that the SMDs lit up when I plugged the board in before building but after installing everything, I can't get them to work anymore.

Think I've found the problem. I may have damaged the pad when soldering the first time. The key was responding when I took some tweezers and bridged the left pin to the diode so I guess I'll just need to get some wire and make a jumper. The SMDs though I'm not sure what to do about those but I can live without 'em.

I received my PCB today and upon plugging it in noticed that one of the RGB LEDs does not turn on. I'm not sure if I need to do anything/change the RGB mode but this is what the PCB looked like when I plugged it in for the first time w/o flashing any firmware.

Sidenote, is there anything I need to do differently with this PCB vs the R1 PCB? I don't know anything about the changes or if there are any additional needs due to the new RGB LEDs.

Update one PCB situation, after sitting down with it at home with a cable and a spare switch to test I have had a few other issues with the board. First of all it seems that I am unable to flash the original custom firmware I made for my R1 board to the new PCB. Not sure if this is normal or again there is a greater issue with the PCB. Also after testing a few of the switch positions it seems that the alphas and some kind of 'default' firmware is on the board, but some of the inputs, namely the spacebar positions do not register the spacebar and instead cause the LEDs to strobe like crazy as if the board is being overloaded. Also the one LED has never turned on at all and the one to the left of it is always a different color from the rest.

Alright! Found the real cause of my switch issue. One side of the diode wasn't soldered. The whole board types perfectly now. :thumb:

Make a file with the V2 preset on the keymap generator site. For curiosity I flashed mine with a V1 file and inputs were mismatched so that might be your problem.

I'm pretty sure V1 and V2 firmwares are different. I know a user posted that the website was generating firmwares that were not working with their v1 golbat (this was after the golbat v2 was announced already). I will go fetch the instructions for flashing. Each kit should also have come with 2 spare LEDs.

I randomly checked 3 boards that I brought back (about half?) and all 3 had full functioning LEDs. As far as reprogramming them goes I haven't gotten around to that yet. I will be building my board eventually but I'm pretty much working 7 days a week for 3 weeks and don't have switches on hand.

https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=86635.0

Here's a thread that was made for R1 firmware flashing. As far as I'm aware the process remains the same. I will double check with GFW about changes in how to flash in case that's potentially causing some of the problems cropping up. If something really isn't working with your board or it comes damaged let me know.

Only half of the RGB LED's worked on mine, I had to resolder them and then they worked. I did not have any extra RGB LED's either. Othen than that everything works perfect.

Five of mine work reliably, the other three (back three starting at the side with the controllers) get power, but their data lines are suspect - if i give the board a little flex they instantly snap to the right color, however, if the lights are cycling etc, they'll just stay at that color until the PCB is flexed again then they suddenly snap to the right colors.  Without a schematic of the pcb I really don't know where to start.  Ugh.  On the upside the ones that are misbehaving are on the usb side of the keyboard so generally aren't seen.

EDIT:  Upon closer inspection, the last 'working' RGB LED didn't have its output pin soldered to the board, causing the three downstream LEDs to show the above behavior.

So, after about 4 hours, everything seems to be dead on the 2nd row...rows 1,2, and 4 all register normally and function 2 works completely fine (bottom row), but I'm completely unable to get fn1 (Caps Lock) to register, also tried flashing original layout in the guide to no avail.
For reference, here was the default layer I was trying to flash:

["Esc","Q","W","E","R","T","Y","U","I","O","P","Backspace"],
[{w:1.25},"Fn1","A","S","D","F","G","H","J","K","L",{w:1.75},"Return"],
[{w:1.75},"lshift","Z","X","C","V","B","N","M","<\n,",{w:1.25},">\n.","?\n/"],
[{w:1.25},"lCtrl","menu",{w:1.25},"alt",{w:2.25},"fn2",{w:2.75},"Space",{w:1.25},"fn3","lgui",{w:1.25},"rctrl"]

Currently, the keys that aren't working are circled:

After re-flashing the layout/firmware through TMK - my layout/layers are working great - but I can't get the RGB lighting to do anything after the first time I flashed it.

It is something to do with the actual firmware on TMK not supporting the RGB?  It lists custom-functions for the RGB for fn keys, which I setup all six functions, yet pressing those keys result in no visible changes to the LEDs (always off), but I think those showing up is independent of the actual firmware support.

Where can we find the .hex that the keyboard shipped with?

I'll ask GFW for the stock hex. I only have the stock hex for the R1 board and I have a sneaking suspicion it's completely different.

For all of those that received their golbats

https://goo.gl/forms/uPI7tOVa6VgBBc7n2

Here's a form for the experience + if you are having problems with the board

So far I've seen some people mentioning that their board only worked after fixing some soldering issues. I will definitely bring that up with GFW. I do not have spare PCBs from this order.

I will ask GFW if there is an update to the process for flashing since that seems to be another big question.

I was able to fix the RGB LEDs fairly easily, it looks like just a couple of cold joints that weren't making sufficient contact. I haven't gotten around to creating a new keymap yet, but I plan on playing around with it this weekend.

Now I just need to figure out what kind of switches I actually want to put in this thing.

RGB lights are working! On the firmware generator, make sure that LED3 is set to RGB LED and the number of leds option is set to 8. After flashing is finished only the lower right corner will be on but pressing any other key mapped to the RGB functions will flip everything back on.

I tried programming this thing again today so my son could use it, and after installing zadig drives my mouse/bluetooth devices aren't working. Anyone else experience this issue? Why is this such a PITA to program?

Edit: Rolled back the driver and got my mouse working. Of course, flashing the PCB still doesn't work. Is there any way to incorporate this keyboard into something like easykeymap tool that I use for the GH60, or using Flip to flash a .hex? I tried building firmware using http://kb.sized.io/ and then flashing the .hex with Flip (which is how I've done my handwire builds in the past) but that didn't work. Are the Rd 1 flashing instructions still recommended for Rd 2 boards?

Are the Rd 1 flashing instructions still recommended for Rd 2 boards?

Once I installed the driver using zadig (after putting the keyboard in reflash mode and selecting the atm32yadda per the instructions, did you do this?  you probably replaced the wrong driver which hosed your usb/bluetooth - make sure you're replacing the driver for the keyboard bootloader (the atm32udfu device), which will only appear with the keyboard in flash mode).

I was able to use https://tkg.io/ (after installing the chrome plugin) by selecting  keyboard->kimera, config->golbatv2, and pasting in maps for each layer from the keyboard layout editor (and finally setting led number 3 to 8 rgb leds per the post above).

The keyboard (in flash mode) shows up in the burn drop down and flashes directly from the browser.

Interesting. I'll give it another crack with the link you provided. I've been a little gun shy since my first try. Thanks for the suggestions!

Edit: Tried all that, followed the instructions to the letter, have the driver installed correctly (when I try the set up again it tells me the driver is already installed), the zadig driver is there and installed (it says "reinstall" when I open it now). But the burn button is still greyed out. Additionally, when I drag the eep file to "reflash" I get the set up window prompt that seems to recognize everything correctly, it even seems to flash successfully (at least that's what it says) but nothing works. I know the PCB works and that I built it correctly because when I first built it the default firmware was working.

The only deviation from the instructions are thus: I'm using a more current version of zadig (2.3) and the board is listed as atm32ud4fu.

Edit #2: I'll leave all of the above there in case it can help anyone else, but I've figured out the problem. The USB slot I had the thing plugged into in the front of my computer wasn't recognizing the presses for some reason? I plugged it into one in the back and sure enough it fired right up.

I have tried everything listed in this thread and i cannot get this thing to flash a working firmware. I can never get bootloader mode to work and can only flash using Flip but again no matter what guide I use, what default firmware I try nothing works. Can anyone help or at least have a updated guide on this piece of junk, thanks.

I was told by GFW that the method to flash should be exactly the same. I'll see about cleaning up a new guide that works for me.
