I've just pushed passed the planning phase and am ordering the parts.

Frame and key plate will be laser cut wood.

Keys at the moment I'm looking at kailh browns (tactile but silent).

Image is base mock up. All keys and function keys are set up, firmware is in developement.

Will share more as I progress.

Yes, quite cool. How thick did you make the plate? And of what wood?

Originally planned for 1/8" birch plywood, but it is not locally available so I am spurcing other options at this time. I may look at 1/4 inch which will need to be planed down to work well with the laser cutter.

The other issue I am finding is the laser runs off of adobe so I will need to convert my stl for that as well.

Oh, to explain the key sizes.

I wanted to limit the amount of bars and give it a unique look but still be within form.

Also I have big hands and thought about making all keys 1.25u.

Template cut using mdf. Have a source for the wood finally and its local!.

Next will be measuring out case and fitting the screen mount.

DIY keyboard, next step screen mount - is this actually a DIY laptop in a briefcase?  Interested in seeing the final resultt either way

It's going to be a pen test station aka cyberpunk (cyberdeck) meets post-apolyptica.

The keyboard will run a Raspberry PI 0, but will be removable from the unit and useable stand alone.

The unit will have a 7" screen untill I cam get a lager one, run from the pi0 and pi4b. I have an external 2.4 / 5 ghz antenna for packet injection and a large battery pack to ensure stable power.

The cabling will be 'external' from the keyboard in the lower half to the main unit on the upper half. With ports to allow connection of additional peripherals.

The smaller modifiers are an odd choice, but depending on how you type it won't be a problem (and like some OG boards I've seen with stepped keycaps it eliminates the need for stabilizers, though those stepped keys only have a 1u area meant to be pressed). It'll certainly look unique.

It'd be really cool to build a new computer inside the case of an old luggable. Carrying around a computer that weighs as much as a modern desktop it just too funny.

@Rayndalf  I'm doing several plate prototypes to find the best fit to go with whatever caps I manage to get. I set up the spacing based on average sizes but used smaller sized keys to limit the stabalizer cutouts.

So far it's been a lot of fun doing the templates and getting everything test fit. Once I've finished the templating I'll post the final plate image.

When the full build is completed I'll make an instructable to allow anyone to do the build.

The plywood I'm using fits Gateron switches flush with the bottom of the keys, this is going to make hand wiring much easier especially with the tight fit.

Signature Plastics might still be selling DCS blank grab bags, you can get ~1300 keys (that actually passed QC) for $35 which would cover a lot of layouts, but the colors wouldn't match

Nice , I neither have the soldering skills or patience to even think about making a Hand wired board but this is pretty neat
