GMK Astral Dark

Hi everybody,
I've become a bit too busy to continue designing in the mech community. Janglad will be taking over my projects. Follow him at his website qoda.studio or here on GH for future updates. Please don't hound him to work on every single set, he's already got a lot on his plate. I will be finishing Astral Light and then signing out. Thanks so much. -NP

GB info, proxies, finalized kits, etc. TBD.

It's been a long time coming for this one. There's been a few similar sets since the original post date so we're here to check interest.

Everything here is currently in a concept phase so any suggestions are welcome.

1. I much prefer the dark version.

2. I do use an odd layout but the base kit covers it! ISO and split shifts are a must

3. Again base looks pretty decent, I think with a few more 1u keys you can actually get ortho support which some might appreciate

Really digging the dark navy theme.

Would like to see:
- Pull numpad kit out from base kit (Please don't make people buy plastic we don't want/need)
- Mods to allow Del/Home/PgUp/PgDn/End keys on the right side for 65% and 75% boards
- 1U Alt,Fn,Sys,Ctrl keys for certain 75% boards with 1U keys right of space

I second this. It’s great for Mac users. Also, wouldn’t mind seeing some turquoise/light blue thrown in. Maybe esc/enter accents or in the mod legends? Idk. “Galaxy” color schemes tend to include turquoise in with the purples and navy, and I’ve always loved it.

If you're using “Scroll” and “Num” legends, I suggest using “Caps” instead of “Caps↲Lock” for the stepped caps legend. This will help achieve a uniform, one-line look across the set.
Change the “Menu” legend to “Fn”. The fact is that 1.25u Fn is a very commonly used key, and whilst “Fn” can fulfill the role of both Fn and Menu, the same isn't really true for “Menu”.
Add R3 PgUp and R4 PgDn keys to help cover some popular 65%/75% right column options.
Consider using System or Super instead of Code. Here's why.
Consider dropping the 2u Shift and adding a barred numpad 5 instead.

I strongly agree with the first three suggestions here.

For me, Super > Code >> System, though I usually just go for icon mods if they're available.

In terms of 2U shift vs. the extra num key I think preferences will vary. Among my customs none even have a num pad but I also think 2U shift is a layout smell. I built 2U once which taught me it's better to overload "? / Rshift" or just going 65%.

Another key you might want to consider dropping is the off-centered stem 6u spacebar. I have 4 boards with 6u spacebars, and on all of them I'm using centered stem keys. Nowadays, if a PCB supports 6u, it'll either support both variants or just centered stem; therefore, I don't think having both in the kit is really necessary.

Initially I was thinking of going for Deep Navy since I like dark blues, and while I was going to get it I decided not to since it seemed almost borderline white on black. I love the coloring of this set (and the Astral set). This one has nice dark blues but also doesn't feel harshly dark, and the light Astral is a nice pastel. I would go for both sets honestly. It would be cool, and I'm not sure how this would be achieved persay, if the two sets could combine into a third set, since they're so closely related.

I don't like this set as much as the light version simply because there have been a lot of dark purple sets as of late (GMK Black Lotus, Nightshade, Rouge, even Taro which has the dark alphas as an option. I get that this IC came out a long long time ago before those sets, but looking at the current landscape). I personally find some of those sets to fulfill my need for dark purple. I do really love the light version however, because it fills a bigger void with its unique colors.

I think the dark looks better than the light, but I can't really distinguish between the color on the alphas and the mods. It's in that weird place where I can tell it's a different color but it's so similar that my brain skips over it - then I see it again. It's kind of distracting ngl. If there was a bigger difference between the mod color and the alphas I would be interested.

Nice to see this set finally moving.

However I feel it would be a bit sad to see the set run as it is right now.
The colors are great.

-I would like either to see Alice support added in base kit like you are considering with Vaporwave R2.
Or to have a bigger spacebar/accent kit like you did with regular Astral. Those small spacebar kits often feel pretty overpriced for what you get imo.

-Would really like a novelty kit and some metal Artisan to give the set some more flair and match light Astral.

Yes there will be novelties. I'm currently leaning towards high fantasy villains and commonly antagonized creatures plus a little bit of magic and dice mixed in.

An accent ISO enter is pretty likely.

The base kit render on the thread is just so we have a good starting point.

Yes there will be novelties. I'm currently leaning towards high fantasy villains and commonly antagonized creatures plus a little bit of magic and dice mixed in.

An accent ISO enter is pretty likely.

The base kit render on the thread is just so we have a good starting point.

Please, consider adding 1.5u R4 Code keys for Mac users

(as it stands now the set doesn’t support 7u bottom row for Mac).

I would like to recommend that you add small bars (2x1u, 1x2u, 1x2.25u, 1x2.75u) to your 40s kit. Otherwise 40s users have to buy base, spacebar and 40s to complete their board which tends to be prohibitively expensive and might keep some people from buying at all.

I say Artisan, but maybe metal keycap is more appropriate.
Rama / Thok are always a favorite of mine and allow for some pretty creative designs.

I don't think so. I know this designer handed off all his projects to another designer, and now they are in charge of making this happen, but it's some what low on their to-do list, so...
