Today is the public launch of the Brand New Beam Spring Keyboards Project!  For those not familiar, I also coordinate and continue to mail out all of the Brand New Model F Keyboards, a project which has more than $1.6 million in orders so far, and will continue to mail them out before the beam spring project continues.

To repeat, the new beam springs don't ship and are not a focus until I've sent out the new Model F Keyboards.

This project is based on reservations.  You need to sign up on the interest form to reserve your Beam Spring Keyboard so please sign up if interested.  I expect to offer these keyboards first come, first served based on the timestamp of when you signed up on the interest form!

Interest form link:  https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdR8ygHtryVYyIl_bbVbNqW9NZgh98COkkf4U7lIhejhZ-Dkw/viewform?usp=sf_link

Details on the features and pricing are below.  This was designed to be announced after the new Model F project ended but there was another project in the works to reproduce the beam spring module exactly (good for the purposes of spare parts for the original keyboards), so I thought it would be a good time to post.

With some down time a while back before orders started going out for the Brand New Model F Keyboards project, the very first beam spring keyboards in probably four decades have been successfully manufactured and assembled.  Injection molded tooling, no 3D printed parts!

STATUS

* 150 Keyboards completed and in stock now.  The next batch of 150 will be on the next container ship, expected to arrive later this year.  Another batch is also in the works.

*Please note that although the first batch of 150 Brand New Beam Spring Keyboards (a mix of 104 Key and SSK style) keyboards is assembled and in stock, nothing is shipping until I get out the new Model F keyboards (except maybe a "beta tester" sample or two).

* In no way has the beam spring project caused a delay of the Model F project.  The beam spring project was only completed as the factory was either waiting for stuff before continuing the Model F assembly or finished assembling the Model F parts on hand.

SUMMARY OF EVERYTHING THIS BUY INCLUDES

*Reproduction IBM 104-Key Full Size and 84-Key SSK style Beam Spring Keyboards, made to the exact original parts specifications with some key (pun intended!) exceptions:

* New feature:  Uses regular Cherry MX compatible keys.  The keyboard uses your Cherry MX type key sets!  No need to be limited to special IBM sets.  The key module design has been updated to be MX compatible.  See below for the expected double shot Cherry MX style key set offering.

* New ultra-low height capacitive beam spring modules to allow for the most compact Beam Spring keyboard design!  Since we did not need the metal bar for the old style IBM keys in each beam module, I was able to keep the exact IBM design but cut out only the space in the module that did not affect the key press distance.  Key travel distance is the same as IBM; the two critical metal parts in the modules are the same (the fly plate and the rectangular piece of metal it attaches to).  Besides that, the beam modules still are the exact same design and dimensions as the originals, so it is a 100% reproduction in the performance sense, with one improvement:  the two small posts inside the beam module have been enlarged slightly for an even snappier and louder sound when the flipper moves up to hit the inside of the module as the key is pressed.  This means however that they are not drop in replacements for the originals.  In addition, I scrapped the inner foam and contamination shields above the modules; the beam modules friction fit directly to the case tops using a locked/keyed connector (see photos below).  There is some foam below the PCB as a noise shield for the capacitive sensing as well as an aid to help ensure a tight fit of the beam modules against the PCB.  The keyboard will not win any design awards but it is a modern beam spring keyboard which is what counts the most!  The keyboard case uses countersunk Torx style screws.

* Each keyboard is expected to include a small first aid kit of a few spare fully assembled beam modules for future usage.

* xwhatsit, QMK, and Via compatibility.  Full NKRO.  USB-C connectivity with an externally accessible USB-C port for easy cable removal.  PCB has been designed so that it uses the same open source xwhatsit Model F controllers (16 columns x 8 rows)

* LED lock lights on the 104-key model.  They come with just holes as the factory default so you can see a bit of the LEDs through them, but you can put an overlay that can be purchased from Unicomp to make it look like the Model M keyboards (tan brown overlay or the modern looking black color overlays.

* Layout Customization options:  Two choices only, besides the fact that you can choose your own Cherry MX key set.  As opposed to the vast customizability of the Model F offerings the New Beam Spring Keyboard Project only has two choices:  104 Key ANSI or 84 Key ANSI.  Every keyboard has an aluminum ultra-compact case and black powdercoating.  If interested in ISO please let me know in the interest form but that's not a likely possibility.

* Solenoid possibility.  There is room for a solenoid, though the New Beam Spring Keyboards are too thin to accept the extra beefy custom solenoids offered with the Model F project.  A slightly smaller solenoid is expected to be made available for the beam spring keyboards, closer to the smaller solenoids originally offered by IBM in many of their beam spring keyboards.

* Possibility of offering Double shot keys:  I may order a small batch of them to include as an add-on option - the color schemes may be limited to the pictured color scheme or black/white like the beam spring originals.  Please express your interest in the interest form

* Cost:  Approximately $500 to $600 each for the early birds - about $4 or so per module if you think about it (plus the cost of every other part of the keyboard)!  Rather than the made to order model of the Brand New Model F Project, for this one I have already purchased two batches of 150 keyboards each at a higher expense than expected due to project cost overruns.  Instead of increasing the price for everyone I expect to offer the first 100 keyboards at one price as a reward to the early birds.  Then the next group will be offered at $100 or so higher in pricing, and the final remaining units will be offered $100 more than the last group.

Notes and Disadvantages of Beam Spring Modules

* Many of you have heard of the beam spring keyboards but have never tried one.  They are very different from Model F keyboards in several ways.

* First, the beam spring keys wobble noticeably, just like old fashioned typewriter keys if you've ever typed on one.  However my reproductions wobble much less than the keys in my two original beam spring keyboards as I made the tolerances tighter.  It may take some time to get used to typing on it but not too much stands up to the uniqueness of the IBM Beam Spring typing experience!  MX stabilizers are expected to be included but I've found that the beam mechanism actually works better without stabilizers for the most part - only the space bar needs a stabilizer.  The modules are wide enough to allow an extra wide key, even like the right shift key, to work 100% even pressing it on the edges.  IBM's beam spring keys were kept not too big so they did not require stabilization outside of the space bar, to my knowledge.

* Next, the beam spring modules require more work to maintain, though the keyboard comes fully assembled (besides you having to install the keys themselves).  Documentation and videos will be provided in the future.  The main issue is that the fly plates (the metal parts that connect to the flippers) can easily separate and require opening up the keyboard for repair.  The advantage with the new Beam Spring keyboards is that the keyboard case opens up and you have direct access to the beam modules - just open up the bottom of the keyboard.  For this reason the beam spring keyboards are only for those willing to learn how to repair and maintain these keyboards, not for those who just want a keyboard with 100% uptime.

* Given the smaller case made of aluminum, and the slightly snappier beam modules as described above, the sound is not going to match IBM's 40 year old beam spring keyboards exactly.  Please don't expect that.  These are not exact reproductions of beam spring keyboards, case and all; these are reproductions of the IBM beam spring modules (with some upgrades noted above).  There is far less case, inner foam, and other materials to deaden and dampen the sound of the new Beam Spring Keyboards compared to the originals.

* I want to reiterate again that in no way is this project being prioritized over the new Model F project, for which I am continuing to mail out orders and will continue doing so for the remainder of this year into early next year.  Nothing's happening with the beam springs for now:  the beam spring keyboards are going to sit in their boxes until the Model F keyboards have gone out.  Although the first batch of keyboards are in hand I will note that these specifics are all subject to change and subject to typographical error.

And here are some various manufacturing photos and parts photos. The first photo shows the very first prototype beam metal parts, with a little extra metal where it shouldn't be! This was fixed of course for the production parts.

Yes confirmed.  In addition to Brand New Beam Spring Keyboards talk and talk about joining the current round of keyboards being produced and assembled at the factory, I'd like this thread to also focus on recommendations for the next round, including additional layouts, a discussion of the proposed double shot key set, and seeking help to contribute open source alternative keyboard case designs for future rounds of this group buy.

Below I have copied my replies to recent discussions that have been going on on the Deskthority thread for this project:

Regarding the fly plates - I did not mean to exaggerate defects of IBM beam spring keyboards, just to discuss the potential and realized pitfalls of the technology itself in terms of expected maintenance and repairability time. I will leave the question of beam spring maintenance frequency to those who use their beamsprings as daily drivers. Beyond when I was setting up my IBM beam spring keyboards after receiving and cleaning them and re-seating a key or two (many years ago I put the "I" key flipped for example - did not notice the difference in the key slope initially!) I had to reattach a number of the fly plates, but I have not had to do anything memorable after occasional testing in the ensuing years since then. They are more likely to fly out when the board is open and I am making adjustments or testing the modules not installed in a keyboard.

Case height is 24mm (not including the parts that stick out on top). Just under 47cm width and about 16.5 cm length.

Regarding the interest form, everyone should please be realistic in what they can spend later this year when considering signing up :) - one person put that they would order 500 keyboards - not likely!

webwit and others - no HHKB or ISO this time, as the keyboards are already produced. There may be another round with these options (and with additional case color options) but not likely for a while, if at all. Definitely nothing before I get the Model F project mailed out. For everyone: if you really want the beam spring and are flexible with using the US ANSI layout I recommend signing up to order it, if that is preferable to not getting a spot in the list. You can also sign up and note "only ISO" if you want to be in on the possible next round.

The doubleshot keys are expected to only be available in US and a few extra UK ISO keys (the latter for futureproofing and to allow more sets to be sold) so they will include more than 103 keys most likely - everyone would get all the keys. Nothing's finalized yet. The MOQ requires all sets to have the exact same keys.

Regarding the case design alternatives I would be happy to receive open source submissions for more stylish additional case offerings as future upgrades (I'll send to the factory for some quotations), however none would be factory installed options. The current design reflects the goal of making a Brand New beam spring keyboard with the smallest feasible footprint. The goal is to get these shipped as they are and then to allow additional stuff to be offered in the future, including case designs ranging from Model M style and modern mechanical keyboard style all the way to original beam spring keyboard case styles. Personally I'd like to see the 3278 A01 style cases with the momentary push buttons (I looked into this, but the ones of similar size are too deep to fit in the current case's interior dimensions). Also the 3101, 3277, 3278 and others are good to consider if anyone's up for making the cad files.

Another benefit to the extra big case would be the additional sound deadening offered. As there's nearly no deadening material or pounds of extra case, and the tolerances are far tighter, the new beam springs do reverberate noticeably more, like the Model F, as opposed to the dead sound of my original beam springs with nearly zero reverberation sound.

zrrion if you'd like to facilitate the ability to easily create plates and PCBs for various layouts as you mentioned, that would be great but I don't know if the demand for beam springs in various additional layouts would warrant the effort.

nickg SSK style num pads should be possible with the QMK and Via firmware but others would have to chime in on this. And again as noted above, the feel and sound are close to but still different from the original beam spring keyboards in the ways I mentioned. If you are looking for the 100% same experience you will not find it without turning to an original keyboard.

Regarding floating case designs, the goal was to minimize the additional parts of the original beam spring keyboards so the cost would not be even higher, which is why there is no additional interior top or bottom plate. I could imagine this keyboard itself becoming a drop in "inner assembly" for a larger case, maybe like an original IBM style case if someone wanted to mod their keyboard after it is delivered.

ZyBeR as noted in my initial post stabilizers are included but not needed or recommended outside of the space bar. Given the height of the beam modules it is impossible to mount the stabs on the PCB, which is why they are plate mounted.

A general question - for 122 layouts do people prefer the grouped together function keys at top or would it be better to space apart the F1-F4 (and 4 keys above it), F5-F8, etc. as it is done on a Model M? Would an interesting 122 layout be Model M 103 plus 4 keys on top of each function key and of course 10 keys on the left side unchanged?

mmm if you see photos of disassembled beam modules, the original switch had a metal insert which attached the white part of the beam module to the key. I'd guess that if they made it shorter, the white part would not have been long enough to hold the metal part by friction fit. But I have no idea. Maybe someone could ask the inventor **** Harris on his thread?

Yes the sound is noticeably different without all the extra material serving as significant dampening. I'll be posting some "Beam Spring QC secrets" videos later showing how you might even be able to tune the sound of each switch based on how sharp you want the clickiness, to some degree. By default the factory tuned them not to be overly snappy so that they are more like the originals, but I tuned my own new beam spring to be extra snappy. In other words the factory toned them to have less high frequency/high pitch sound but I expect that the end user can change this. The more snappiness, the more reverberant sound.

Pete the pictured caps are not spherical but they are doubleshot. I hope to make them available for purchase but they won't be a required purchase to get the keyboard. Each product line has its own serial number. A question to everyone - do people care about the serial labels? Every minute counts when shipping out hundreds of boards! I like the serial labels though.

lachmoewe yes but I hope to offer additional layouts myself with input from what people are looking for. PRIPARA_PLAYER regarding JIS and other one-off or super low demand offerings I don't know how feasible it will be for the CNC milling adjustment charges - I'd have to talk with the factory.

Thanks for the feedback tiltowait. For beam module flyplate attachment I use a scrap space bar wire from the Model F project, cut off at one end. Maybe one of these should be included with each keyboard. If you have a photo of the IBM one please share it. I've just seen them note and illustrate in the manual that a paper clip is best.

Redmaus as noted in my original post much of the Model F project timeline was spent waiting on the various factories involved as opposed to constant action, so there was much down time / spare bandwidth for both me and the factories involved. In no way is the beam project delaying the Model F project which remains the priority.

Regarding the wait list, more than half the 300 spots are currently taken, just a few days after the project was announced (though some attrition is to be expected, allowing for a wait list and a possible future round). This was completely unexpected. I may have to change the "100 keyboards at each price" initial goal because more than 100 keyboards have been reserved so quickly. I'll have to do some math on figuring out a more blended pricing so as not to reward someone managing to notice the thread and sign up a few hours before someone else - that was not the intention.

shampoo beam springs are louder than Model F's so I would not recommend them if Model F is the limit to the permissible noise in a given room.

goofy9x I believe the doubleshots are PBT but not confirmed.

As an update I have posted the monthly update on the project web site blog.  It summarizes the goings-on of the project and my posts made after the prior update.

The most recent post is for the new Model F project, and the post before that (both on the same page) is the update for the Brand New Beam Spring Project launch being discussed on this thread.

https://www.modelfkeyboards.com/blog/

I expect to continue mailing out keyboards for the rest of this year into early next year, after which the Beam Spring Keyboards will be the focus.

At the very least I'm in for some replacement parts, if you can swing a high-profile case and angle I'd consider a board. Especially if a 60% could be done.

For all the people holding back waiting for an ISO or an HHKB or some other layout, you could buy this keyboard to harvest the switches.
Building a custom capacitive PCB would be the main challenge.

there are a number of challenges preventing me from doing that

but id settle for a high profile case TKL

also joe, have you thought about making a version with included solenoid for maximum noise? maybe i missed it above

There is a paragraph in the original post. Here it is:

Solenoid possibility.

Any beam module puller suggestions?

I am trying to find recommendations for a tool that can separate the super glued beam washers in bulk, so that the springs can be replaced with different weight springs.  The plan is to offer a heavier weight spring and a normal weight (normal force) spring with the new beam keyboards, and to have a tool available that can help folks switch between springs or potentially repair beam modules in the future.

Currently I remove the module, flip it upside down, grip below the washer with a flat metal wire stripper tool, and gently tap the tool with a hammer a few times.  Takes a few seconds but it involves needing to take out and later put back all the modules.

Ideally the tool would grip the two sides of the washer, and it would have a gun-type grip that would push in the center (the white beam part shown in the first post).  I've seen some twist ones (shown below) but that seems like it might take a bit longer to use for each module.

Similar products I've looked at include gear pullers, battery terminal pullers, wiper arm pullers, gear pullers, etc.

The washer is 1/2 inch and the white beam module part below it is about 3/8 inch, so the puller spread should account for that.

Possibilities:

As an update I am looking to wrap up the Brand New Model F backlog in the months after the current container shipment arrives (it is leaving the port at the end of this month and should arrive to me in March).  The schedule for this year is that after the backlog is done (around mid-year), the Brand New Beam Spring keyboards first round will go out, and then we still have the final round later this year for the F62/F77. After that will be the slightly more costly beam spring keyboard round with the case redesign and increased sound dampening).

Currently we are up to more than 900 reservations for the beam project! The cutoff point for the first round will all depend on how many folks choose the first round vs. the second round.

As a reminder the beam reservations Google Form is for the project in general not just for the first round - everyone needs to sign up if they prefer the second round too.

When we get closer I expect to put up some videos of the sound and operations to help folks decide. The advantage of the first round is not having to wait a year - having everything in stock, plus the full sound quality (extra reverberant and snappy) while the advantage of the second round will be more dampened sound quality like the original, as well as the redesigned more expensive case. Another consideration - the second round is expected to cost a bit more than the first given it has the extra case and because prices have gone up for a lot of manufactured goods over the past year, so it is likely that these won't be able to be manufactured at the same cost.

Attached is the first draft of a proposed second round case (also in standard CAD STP file format for everyone interested in offering open source case design options).

This design is a compromise design with elements from various IBM beam spring cases:  it combines the top curved area and near-exact overall length dimension and left and right side bezel thickness of the 3278, the gentler slope below the keys of the 3101 and 66-key cases, a shorter profile 40mm case height given the reduced beam module height, and the interior folded sheet metal bottom plate style of the Displaywriter (to eliminate the need for additional die cast molds for the bottom case parts).  Also the bottom case plate is recessed from view.  Edges are rounded.

Not shown are the holes (for screws, bumpers, etc. - countersunk screws for the 2mm thick bottom case plate).  Also not done in this file - proper LED cutouts, exact measurements of the cutouts and case height in the keys area, to sufficiently recess various profiles of MX keys into the case.

Elements not modeled in this file - most of the beam module itself (only the main piece is modeled), the 2mm thick foam planned to go on top of the beam module and below the top inner assembly, the capacitive PCB, foam or rubber PCB underlay, plastic mylar barrier between top inner assembly and capacitive PCB.  I believe that the current dimensions also allow for an additional 2mm compressed foam below the inner assembly, for added sound dampening.

While the original cases were tilted significantly, to allow for fully customizable keyboard angling through bumpers the case will remain neutral.  This also helps keep shipping and packaging costs as low as is feasible.

The file also includes the expected holes and beam module CAD files with the expectation that folks can order modules to make their own cases and layouts, though this would be much lower priority as the goal is to get enough cases and full keyboards ordered to keep the price feasible enough to proceed with ordering the molds.  The modules are by far the most costly part of the keyboard so the overall costs for making your own keyboard will not be lower than the full keyboard cost in my estimate - I haven't finalized the cost of individual modules, though each first round beam spring keyboard does include a mini first aid kit of several spare modules as mentioned in the original post.  The top inner assembly beam module holes are slightly larger than they were for the first round of the beam spring project, so as to allow for more wiggle room and more isolation between the plate and beam modules (with the goal of dampening the sound).

Draft case dimensions are LxWxH 495x248x40mm.  There would also be a TKL version of the case without the right side block (and maybe with or without the LED indicators - not sure yet).

As noted before, the stabilizer insert cutouts are kind of vestigial at this time, with the exception of the space bar stabilizer which is required.  I have found the non-space bar stabilizers prevent proper operation of the MX keys with the beam modules.  They are all included with each first round beam spring keyboard though, in case anyone can use them.

These are all nice case designs being posted on the DT thread - keep them coming both here and there! Eventually we probably have to narrow them down to a few main options and maybe several more low quantity CNC milled ones where each case may cost several hundred dollars extra due to tooling, only paid by those interested in the specific design.

The two main decisions are which layouts to offer and in which cases to offer them.

So far in terms of layouts, I have seen the most amount of interest in 122, 104, TKL, 60%, and Split Ergonomic. Within the 104 and TKL there is discussion of different bottom row options that include 1.25U or 1.5U keys. ISO is definitely a top layout request. HHKB style had some small amount of interest. Given the individual modules are the largest cost outside of the case and tooling, the 122 may have extra cost while a 60% might be offered at a lower cost relative to the 104.

In terms of cases there are options for a blended version of the original beam spring cases in one group and more modern looking cases in another group.

Question for all the coders (cross posted from the Model F project thread as it applies to both projects):

Is anyone up for helping move the Model F QMK/Via/Vial project to the new Raspberry Pi RP2040 chip over the coming weeks?  Recently the ATMEGA chips have become nearly impossible to find in quantity due to the chip shortage, which means it's probably time to switch over to the RP2040 for the capacitive keyboard controllers.  After it is up and running I would like to secure the RP2040 chips soon before they may run out too, so that the final round and beam spring second round will not be delayed.

It seems like QMK support is in progress but not yet completed for the RP2040, and there are other projects like KMK which seem to work with the RP2040.  The question is, is it better to go with KMK?  How stable is it?  It may take a while for QMK RP2040 support to be ready.  Some recent related links:

What are the chances of a 65% version of this down the line? And if so, how many months/years as a ballpark guess? :-[

Yes I expect 60% and SSK style beam spring keyboards as part of the next round or 3rd round (?) but not sure.  The next round should start in a couple months after I finish going through the backlog of the current container shipment.

When folks note their interest in a 122 key keyboard, is their specific interest in the exact historical 122-key terminal models with the 24 bunched-together function keys, 5-key cursor design, etc.

Or is it primarily a request for the ability to have more keys than on a standard ~104 key keyboard?  12 extra keys on the top and 10 extra keys on the left side for function keys/custom keys, etc.

Personally I would like a 122 key beam spring keyboard that resembles the Model M 101-key layout but with the extra 12 keys above the 12 function keys, 10 keys on the left which I can use for custom keys (Explorer, media playback, start menu, etc.), the keys between Ctrl and Alt of course, and 3 keys above the Insert/Home/Page Up keys for Print Screen, Scroll Lock, and Pause/Break.  I'm not sure if this updated layout would have too much interest.

Measurement help requested - original beam spring cases:

For folks who have beam spring keyboards other than the 3278 can you provide measurements or drawings (a photo of a handwritten drawing would be fine) of the side profiles and size of the bezels around the top, bottom, left, and right of the keys?  I ask because I only own the 3278 models.

I'd like to get the proportions right in the proposed designs.

I'd request the radius of the curves (one can approximate by measuring a straight line cross section of the curved part of the case), the side profile heights at various points, and the overall length.

Since IBM appears to have designed in inches and fractions of an inch please provide the measurements as such if possible.

If easier to provide the numbers that is fine, or if easier to draw something not to scale and mark the distances that would be good too.

Here are some updated photos of the draft beam spring 104 style design.  The overall case design is unchanged for the time being.

I would certainly appreciate any of the side profile measurements on the various beam spring cases other than the 3278 which I own.  The goal is to have some cases inspired by the profiles and designs of various IBM cases, assuming the mold exterior parts can somehow be combined to keep costs reasonable (then it would just require different mold cores).

My first IBM style design posted a couple months ago was a combination of some IBM cases but I'm thinking maybe I should just do one case for each main variety (5251, 3278, 3101, maybe the 66 key beam spring?).

Of course of we go with a mold instead of CNC milled, the bent tabs for the top case would be removed and you would not see them.  The top and bottom case would be assembled with posts on the inside of the top case.

Below are some details on the beam case design, to be more in line with the originals.

Top case (now at an angle as requested)
.....Top inner assembly ("TIA")
..........Inner foam
..........Beam Module
..........PCB
..........Foam or rubber sheet below the entire PCB
.....Bottom inner assembly ("BIA")
Bottom case

Notes on the PCB:  the PCB is secured to the top+bottom inner assembly in a different way from round 1.  The PCB touches the area where the top+bottom inner assembly are screwed together.  To avoid issues, because the metal inner assembly cannot touch the PCB, on the top side, there is a small mylar strip glued or taped to the top inner assembly as you would see with the original IBM beam spring keyboards.  On the bottom side of the PCB, the large foam mat has some holes in it for the screws so that the PCB does not contact the metal parts.  The PCB and foam pieces are not shown in the photos (you can see a gap where the PCB would go, in between TIA and BIA.

The new TIA has slightly larger holes in the TIA, so that the modules will not fit into place.  This will make assembly less secure - the beam modules will not be securely installed in place in the TIA; instead they will only be secure when the inner assembly is completed.  Before then, the beam modules can be easily moved out of place.  The reason for this is to reduce the contact between TIA and the beam module, in order to reduce the sound (that is why a foam is added).  The foam allows a reduction in the noise of the mechanism.  The goal is to eliminate the ringing sound when typing.  This part was not in the previous beam design.  The colors shown are all false colors designed to maximize visibility/contrast of the various parts.  I expect the TIA to be black and BIA to be the same IBM gold type finish.

Screws:  Case screws will be hex countersunk/flat top, 6-32, 1/2".  Inner assembly screws will be standard + Phillips, the same used with the F62/F77.  The TIA has holes and the BIA has threaded holes.  The threaded holes are not shown in the photos.

We are about 4-8 weeks away from me mailing out the remaining Model F keyboards in the backlog!  A little over 500 keyboards plus many non-keyboard orders.

Here are the first photos of the prototype beam case and the top and bottom inner assembly plates.  They will be making a full prototype with these parts before we proceed.  As noted before this is just a test to make sure everything will fit together and work together.  The design is likely to change (an angle to the case was added but not for this sample, etc.) and I'm not sure yet if I'm making molds for a few beam cases so you can pick a 3278 style beam spring for yourself or a 3101, etc.  Each case style will also have different layout options ideally so there may be a 104 style and a less wide SSK style case.

These are just powdercoated smooth black for the tests as opposed to the bumpy original style texture expected on the finished products.

And here is the sample beam case populated with beam modules.  As noted before this is likely not the final design as I expect to go with separate cases, one based on each of the most well-known beam case designs (3278, 3101, 66-key, etc.) if feasible.

The first two photos show the keyboard installed without the new top inner foam that goes between the top of the beam modules and below the top inner assembly plate.  This was more like my first beam round design.

The third photo shows the new prototype foam installed inside the top inner assembly.  The purpose of the foam is to reduce the reverberation sound and make it sound closer to the originals.

Two things...

[1] The work you've done here is amazing! I am super excited about this project

[2] You had asked a question previously about 122 layouts... is that still a consideration?  If not, would your beam spring modules be contact-compatible with vintage Model F capacitive PCBs in a custom build?

Yes confirmed about the beam 122, which will likely have close to 128 keys (104/105 keys for standard ANSI/ISO + 12 F13-F24 keys + 10 keys for the left side block); 128 is the maximum allowed on a 16x8 matrix. I am open to someone submitting an updated controller design to allow for an additional optional column - maybe Rico's new RP2040-based controller will allow for this - though it might be tricky with maintaining backwards compatibility (maybe a solder pad to switch it from being an extra column to being a ground column?). Compromises will possibly be needed for those wanting to order custom layout 122-style beam spring keyboards, especially if they want additional keys like splitting the backspace, etc.

As noted before, the beam spring project is designed to reproduce the performance and functionality (weighting, travel distance, module specifications) of the originals but with some updates (shortened the two plastic parts of the beam module without altering the travel distance); the sound is not going to be similar to the originals for the first production run because of the design changes (no added foam above the modules, no rubber below, no thick case, etc.).  The modules themselves sound close in my opinion but the goal of the project is not an exact sound reproduction.

Here's a sound comparison of an original module and a new module - this is just one module of each so it will likely not represent what each module will sound like, and it especially does not represent what the installed keyboard sounds like (more test videos with the full keyboard will be made later).

Nope there will be no plastic cases.  I'm hoping the beam modules will be interchangeable but I have not yet received the new beam case sample to confirm this.  All the cases will be powdercoated aluminum or steel (sorry no more extra heavy zinc!).

The new beam spring sample keyboard arrived and I started evaluating it today.  It is way too heavy, at 13.55 lbs!  The sample case was made of extra thick welded steel - the production cases will of course be more sensibly normal thickness material (steel or aluminum).  I don't want to add $50 in increased shipping costs to an already costly keyboard!

13.55! That's a big girl. I understand your point about the added shipping but at the same time the reason i type on my F77 rather than my F122 is that hefty zinc.

What's your goal weight?

Not sure, but if it's die cast then it will be whatever the weight of the aluminum case will be.  The sample case top weighs 4.45 lbs.  Maybe with aluminum that can go down to 1.8 pounds.  And the bottom plate may go down a bit in weight with the switch to aluminum.  My guess is it will still weigh 9-10 pounds or so, not counting all the packaging, cable and keys.

Thanks to photos of IBM beam spring case measurements provided by Chyros I have completed two case styles - please see the renderings below. One style is the 3278 style and the other is a combination of the styles of the 3101, 3727, 4978, 5251, and 6580 Displaywriter - for simplicity I think it should be referred to as the non-3278 style.

Both cases are the same overall dimensions. There are two non-3278 style cases, one designed for welding and the other designed for die casting. The colors are altered in order to show the various parts more clearly - for example the cases will all be a uniform color and it will be available in the same colors and textured finish as the F style cases most likely.

I'm hoping to wrap up the Model F backlog this month.

The fourth container shipment arrived this week.

The second half of the round 1 batch with the factory repaired beam springs arrived. I will be replacing the other 150 or so keyboards' springs that arrived a while back, before the spring issue was discovered. Of course if anyone wants to skip the line and replace the springs themselves that will also be an option (I expect to post a video).

For round 2 I'm thinking Beam 104, SSK, 122, and 62 (60% F62 layout style) to start with, based on interest levels received so far.  ISO and ANSI models, and with HHKB style split right shift as a beam 62 exclusive option.

We are close to opening up orders for beam round 1 - I am 99% through the backlog and have mailed over 3990 new Model F keyboards so far out of about 4040 ordered.

Sharing an important update here as it relates to the beam spring project:

Major project updates:

The 4000th new Model F keyboard shipped this week!  4036 keyboards have shipped in total.

Backlog is done:  I have completely caught up with the backlog!  All outstanding orders comprising the backlog have shipped, not counting 27 orders on hold due to various reasons:  17 orders-partially paid, 3-waiting for them to reply, and 7-other reasons that prevent me from shipping the order).

All F62/F77 keyboards and accessories are in stock, with the exception of 1.75 stepped keys which will be sublimated this month (I ordered blank keys from Unicomp and mailed them to the factory doing the sublimation).  This "all in stock" is a major change in the project, as opposed to the previous "made to order" nature of the project.  I'm hoping that all current and future orders can ship in 1-2 weeks, and likely sooner, but don't hold me to this as anything could happen.

Over the coming week I hope to prepare a beam spring video / higher quality sound test and create the product pages and maybe take some additional photos, so please look out for an email if you signed the beam spring interest form posted earlier (and reposted in the past week or so).  The in-stock beam spring keyboards will be reserved and quantity limited with priority to those who signed up the earliest.  Those who signed up will also have the option to order the second round beam spring keyboard, whose design is now finalized into the modified 3101 style.  Some time after, orders will open up to those who did not sign the interest form.

Recently I located a nice PBT double shot MX set with the key tops partially sunken, similar but not a match to the IBM originals.  I believe these to be one of the closest matches out there.  I hope to receive these beam spring key set samples later this month and then I will post photos and likely order them.  The molds are already produced but the color scheme for the project has not been produced - they are custom making the key colors for this project.  The PBT double shot key set options will be:
(1) all black color keys with white legends, or
(2) black modifier keys with white legends and all other keys will be white with black legends

While the factory does not have double shot molds for the international language keys, they do offer ISO Enter, short left shift, and a few dozen additional keys beyond the standard 104, which I expect to offer as well, so the tradeoff of using a modified ISO layout with some "incorrect" keys may be worth it to some international layout users to be able to use these new keys.  (As a note, the factory whose double shot sample keys were pictured in the beam spring product photos has not been responsive so I have been looking at these other factories).

To keep things simple and to help cover the costs of these custom made keys which have a high minimum order quantity, the round 1 keyboard cost will include $10 (US) and $15 (international) for separate shipping of the round 1 key sets, whether you order a set or not.  No more trying to collect separate payments and holding off on orders like years ago for early Model F orders - everything in stock will be shipping out to everyone without waiting for keys to arrive.

Update - beam spring orders opening up this week and shipping this month!

The new factory's MX PBT double shot keycap samples arrived and they look great.  I expect to order them soon and maybe they will be ready next month.  So as to get the first round beam spring keyboards going, I will be accepting orders starting soon, likely in the next couple days.  I will be sending emails out to those who signed up the earliest; they will have a limited order window before I send out the next group of emails on the interest form.  To ensure a fair distribution of keyboards, everyone has a strict limit to only order the round 1 keyboards they specified they would order, but of course they can choose to give up their spot or to order the second round keyboard this week.  There is no restriction on ordering round 2 keyboards.

To honor the spherical keycaps of the original IBM beam spring keyboards, these PBT double shot caps are not spherical but I would describe them as a little sunken on the top, as a good compromise between the spherical and non-spherical design.  See the last photo below for a good look at the design.  As a note, due to the way their molds are set up with ISO Enter being in the mold of non-modifier keys, the sets containing white keycaps will likely include a white ISO Enter key, with the option to purchase the black ISO Enter key for a few dollars, because I will need to pull out the ISO Enter keys from the all-black key cap sets to accommodate half the sets without them.  Since less than half of the black and white key cap orders are expected to order the black ISO Enter, there should not be a shortage of black ISO enter keys.

I am not sure if there is an easy technical way to only accept orders from those I send out the first wave announcement email to, but please only order if you receive this forthcoming email.  I will be checking the email addresses against the distribution list of email addresses.

So as to allow a one-stop order process for everyone interested in either round, orders for both rounds will be opened so the early sign ups have a choice to be in the first round or to be one of the earliest to receive the second round.  There are no restrictions on second round keyboard orders.

The keyboards will ship right away, first come first served, with the keycaps and LED overlays to ship separately when they are ready.

In the interest of full disclosure the below keycap photos have had their colors altered to reflect the expected black keys and white keys option (black modifier keycaps with white text, and white keys with black text for the other keys).  The other option will be all black keys and white text.  The reason is that the factory is custom making the requested colors just for this project and no other customers had requested this before, so our specified colors were not available as a sample.  The bottom row towards the left side has a few extra samples not part of the key set (Z A W 8 3).
Some more updates:
1.  We are going with the non-3278 style case.  The design has been finalized and the factory is producing prototypes at this stage for B62, BSSK, B104, and B122.

2.  I am open to additional options but you would need to get others on board (!) to help you split the tooling costs.  It may cost over $1000 for each design in lower quantities because the tooling costs per unit are far lower when they are spread out among hundreds of keyboards of a particular design.

3.  Yep the same colors are expected with the compact F cases including beige, industrial gray, black, red, light blue, and dark blue.

4.  There is a slight angle to the case, but this time there are 4 holes in the bottom so you can set the keyboard to have front tilt or back tilt.  The good thing is it should not be difficult to fabricate your own case designs and just drop in the inner assembly, while there is still going to be the option to make your own beam spring designs and order just the modules.

Here are my draft notes on what's included in round 1:

Included in each keyboard order:
1 Ultra Compact Style Beam Spring Keyboard with black powdercoated aluminum case and countersunk T8 screws
1 First Aid Kit at no extra cost (4 spare modules, fully assembled)
1 Set of MX plate mount stabilizers
1 foam packaging and box as pictured
2 extra beam springs
1 Flyplate/flipper reattachment tool (a Model F space bar stabilizer wire cut in half!)
1 USB-C cable
1 set of 4 square bumpers/feet

Needed tools: Torx T8 screwdriver

Available to order - the overlays and keys will ship separately:

Black ISO Enter keycap with white text

LED overlay. The LED overlay is recommended (keep dust out) but optional. The beam spring LEDs are close to the top of the case so they can be seen clearly from various angles. Use the LED overlay to identify each LED (standard Num/Caps/Scroll, from left to right). You can use a higher resistor value to make the LEDs dimmer and a lower resistor value to make them brighter. 2.2k is the factory default.

xwhatsit Model F controller - the same exact Model F controller is actually used for this beam spring project
spare custom-made USB-C cables
Additional bumpers. Only adhesive bumpers will work with the round 1 boards as there are no bumper holes on the bottom
Solenoid note - the compact round 1 case will not accommodate the solenoid (not tall enough), so if you order a solenoid you would have to mount it externally or use a smaller solenoid like this one from Sparkfun, which is compatible with the xwhatsit solenoid driver: https://www.sparkfun.com/products/11015

Choice of 2 MX-compatible PBT double shot key sets - refer to the photos to see the included keys:
Choice 1: black modifier keycaps with white text, and the rest of the keys white keycaps with black text

Here are some photos of the molds currently under production.  The last two photos are from this week, while the other photos were from about a month ago.  Molds for these keyboard projects have usually taken 1-2 months before they can start producing samples - the first samples are expected to be made later this month.  Then the samples need to be evaluated and approved, or the mold needs to be adjusted to produce parts to the required tolerances.

Super excited to see this coming to fruition.

One question on the keycaps themselves - how would you characterize the profile? There's been such a proliferation in profiles over the last two years that it's become a bit of an alphabet soup (MDA, XDA, etc.)

I've become enamored with the MT3 profile recently, though I'll give yours a try as well.

Also, having just read through the Input Club's post-mortem on their attempt at beamspring switches, I do hope you and Haata have been able to talk lessons learned.  The discussion on their search for the right alloy to use in the springs was fascinating.

Samples of the beam module parts (and also the 3 new Model F keys) have been completed and will be mailed to me over the coming weeks.  These first samples do not yet have the production colors.

It would be very interesting to chat with the Input Club folks.  I have fortunately met some of them at the keyboard meetups but would like to meet everyone involved!  Some of the larger meetups are starting up again.  Everyone please do let me know if a big meetup is coming up in an area I can travel to (NY/NJ/Philadelphia/DC/etc.).

The keys are custom and are not made in line with any standard MX profile.  As you can see in the various photos all of the keys do not vary much in height.  These keys were the closest production keys I could find with characteristics similar to the IBM beam spring keycaps (color scheme, font, PBT double shot, each key about the same height).

Samples of the beam module parts (and also the 3 new Model F keys) have been completed and will be mailed to me over the coming weeks. These first samples do not yet have the production colors.

Yes, emails just started going out today.  Here is the email that went out today to all but the first few hundred signed up folks who were given the choice to pick Round 1 and/or Round 2.

The Beam Spring Project is launching today!

Round 2 (classic style) Beam Spring Keyboard - now public and open to all
Order link: https://www.modelfkeyboards.com/product/beam-spring-keyboard/

Thank you for being a part of the project. You are one of the 1,200+ sign-ups on the Google form; you are now able to customize your Round 2 Classic Case Style Brand New Beam Spring keyboard. Please read the below-linked product page and watch the setup and typing test videos (embedded on that page) for additional details so that you can decide what to order.

Right now those who signed up the earliest have been given a 15-day order window starting today and ending on Saturday January 7; they can pick Round 1 or Round 2. After that date, I'll move down the list of emails and reach out to the next group if there are any remaining Round 1 spots. Round 1 was limited to the first few hundred sign ups as production was limited to about 150 boards in each type (B104 and BSSK).

Please use the same email address when placing your order, so I can match it with the interest form.

For most folks I definitely recommend the Round 2 boards; the reasons are detailed in the above-linked product page.

And finally, no cheating please! As a note, if the round 1 link is leaked and someone orders it without having received my invitation email, the order terms note that they agree to receive a round 2 keyboard without notification (not smart to risk it, as the Round 2 boards are lower in cost for a short while). This email is not the Round 1 invitation email.

In my infinite wisdom, I checked the wrong email… Got the message. Hehe, I don’t want to think about import costs for this… At least it will be a surprise for future me, not present me.

Sidenote: is it possible to have an overview of all the colour options we can pick from? I might just be missing something on the site, but it would be good to compare what they would roughly look like.

Dra9on and CaptainFabulous agreed, I have just updated the beam spring page with these photos - thanks!  All the color options are the same as shown on the Compact F62 and F77 pages as well.

PancakeMSTR my apologies that the new versions do not have any real photos or project renderings just yet.  The project was launched after review of the working B104 prototype received some months ago (and shown in the typing test video embedded on the beam spring product page), but all versions have not yet been produced in sample form.  The design is expected to be the same dimensions for all Round 2 keyboards, except the BSSK will chop off a few inches on the right side compared to the B104, the B62 will chop off the right block of the BSSK, and the B122 will add an extra row on top for F13-F24 and extra space on the left side for the 10 function keys, compared to the B104.  Please refer to the B104 rendering on the beam spring product page as a base reference.

Is the case going to be styled like the one in the video or will it be fully rounded like in the render on the website?

I think I remember reading that youre also working on recreating the original beam spring switches. Are there plans to make a keyboard for that version?

The web site render is the final design.

Nope I have no plans to recreate the exact original switches.  The new ones are the same exact design dimensions, except with a 10mm or so middle section removed since the long metal bar for the IBM keycap was no longer needed due to switching to the MX style keycap requirement.

Apologies I still have to make the renderings for the other keyboards.

If anyone strongly prefers the Round 1 style and did not make the invitation list cutoff from the newsletter email sent last week, please send me an email so I can try to get you in Round 1.

The key sets are finalized and it would cost tens of thousands of dollars to add even just a few keys to the set (I asked). One idea I had was to have a set that included every common international language's special keys, all combined into one set, but that would have been cost prohibitive since they did not have the molds for these other keys.

The provided key set has 139 or so keys, which includes about 25 additional 1U keys not used on the B104, as pictured in the beam spring keyboard product page, but the keys are not all the right legends and sizes for a 122 and many are just duplicates of other keys but in the modifier color, so it would look odd and the legends would be "wrong" but it would be possible to use the provided set on a 122 and cover the keys. Unfortunately the factory does not have molds for any additional keys in this style of key set - I did ask them. For the B122 key sets my recommendation is to mix and match keys if you like the current key set, by also ordering another set, or considering another key set instead of the set offered with the keyboard. To clarify the second part, you can use any MX keys as the modules have MX stems but I have to disclose it's at your own risk since I am not selling or endorsing these other products in any way.

The custom key set for this project will cover the each key on the B122 but the legends are not the standard 122-key legends.  For example there are no F13-F24 keys (see the key set photo on the project page to see the included keys).  I would recommend using another set for the B122 as mentioned above.

The Round 1 boards will be as photographed on the product page, and the Round 2 boards will be the finalized 3101-style design, currently shown as a beige rendering.  The photographed Round 2 3278 style design was just for the prototype and will not be produced.

The two different one sounds drastically different.. is that cause the case reverberates so differently? Also - Are the compact style (round1) only available in the new black look and not the original retro look? Also are the pics of what all the different color and board combos will look like? Like a BSSK industrial vs a 62 off white/beige? What color on the main sales page is the main pic? Dark grey? and lastly are the keycap options only what is shown? - those grey keycaps in the picture of round2 wont be available?

Thanks for answering everything and if some of these answers are obvious I apologize!

Yes the compact style is just Round 1 and the classic style is just round 2.  Sorry no photos just yet.  The pictured photo is black but the finish is not the production finish.  The colors should match the compact case Model F photos shown on the product page.  Correct the gray keys are just the sample keys - just the other ones are available to order.

Cool. For me the compact is cool in a modern way but I like the OG style more. Also seems to be cheaper and has a totally different sound. Doesn't it? The compact even sounds newer....

I'd love to see some pics how the industrial grey looks with the black and white caps... So i can order which one has the look.

Round 1 keyboards now open to all:

Now that orders have been open for about two weeks, the Round 1 keyboards are now open to all.  In the next day or so I will be emailing those who signed up on the Google form and who have not picked their keyboard just yet.

The 1 per person limit has also been removed for the Round 1 keyboards.  Feel free to order additional ones if you'd like.

The product page will be marked as out of stock once the limit is reached and no more keyboards can be ordered.

https://www.modelfkeyboards.com/product/beam-spring-round-1-keyboard/

https://www.modelfkeyboards.com/product/beam-spring-keyboard/

For those who want to request to switch from Round 2 to Round 1, here are the steps:
Please order the keyboard and extras that you want, and choose "other payment" at checkout.
Please place a separate order of units of the store item $1 increments and choose free/other shipping at checkout, right before clicking Place Order.  The quantity of $1 increments to order is the price difference between your orders.

Lord please do share a link to your review when it has been posted!

Dra9on I will just pick one of the default ones.  If you want to pick feel free to email me with your order number and LED overlay number choice.

For the B122 folks, any recommendations on extra keys to consider including?  It won't be a perfect match but I was thinking of throwing in 22 black keys with transparent relegendable tops.  I also asked the factory if they can provide blank keys in the same style but it is not likely.  Probably better than using the provided set's extra keys as there would be duplication.

For reference, here are the keys remaining after I installed the keys from this set to the B104 Round 1 on the product page.  It turns out there are 21 extra 1U keys and you would need 22 to cover F13-F24 and the 10 left side block keys (I thought there were enough 1U keys but the factory provided more extra keys than I had anticipated in the sample set).  Below is the first production key set photo.

There are plenty of options. I would love to see some "media" keys (last, play, next, mute, vol up, vol dn).

Personally, I was thinking to use the spare F keys (after the media keys of course) for managing windows/workflow (e.g. switch task, switch window, show applications, goto menu, goto status bar, etc) and the 10 left side keys for generic functions like new, save, cut, copy, paste, undo, redo, close, quit. I don't know how feasible those "labels" are; I guess they could also be just single characters (if nothing else then to keep it simple).

Transparent re-legendable keys would be a nice alternative to blank keys if those are not an option.  That's what I'm using for the side function keys on my F122.  It took me a while to figure out what media/power/etc functions to assign to them.  One non-standard one I've been using a lot is compose.  In my case I built compose support into my keyboard controller, but there's software like WinCompose that could make use of such a key.

+1 to the relegendable caps.
I remember you saying the caps are doubleshot, so it doesn't make that much sense to make custom moulds for media/f13-24 keys. As much as that would be great, I doubt the cost will be worth it. Interesting that it's unlikely they will have blanks, as those are simpler to make than doubleshot keys. But that's their thing. The relegendable caps sound like a great idea, especially for the left block.

I had a look into those, and you're right, those are an excellent option!

Another +1 for relegendable key caps.

The Round 1 boards should start going out later this month hopefully, while Round 2 still needs to be produced, assembled, and shipped which should happen over the coming months.  The PBT double shot key sets arrived and they look great, just like the photos posted earlier.  The all black keys with white legends also look great - I need to post a photo of this custom set.

As a reminder Round 1 and Round 2 boards are now open for all to order; you no longer need an invitation.

So far we have more than $160,000 in new beam spring keyboard orders after less than two months - well beyond my expectations.

Below are the additional beam spring renderings. These designs have been submitted to the factory. They will be making a prototype of each keyboard size before proceeding to production. Please see an earlier post for the B104 rendering.

The holes on the bottom of the case are for the solenoid driver PCB, solenoid, and P clip, as well as 4 holes for screw-in bumpers (adhesive bumpers can also be used).

An update: I have ordered a mold for the beam spring washer. Instead of the glue on metal washer from the original design, the Round 2 boards will have a removable friction-fit plastic washer with a cross in the middle to match the cross of an MX key module (a reminder that this project uses MX style keycaps). This helps speed up and facilitate end-user repair time and initial assembly time. Now if the flipper falls out of place there is no more need to use the paper clip method - you can just remove the washer by hand and reattach the flyplate. The purpose of the washer is primarily to hold the spring and o-ring in place before keycaps are installed, so it did not need to be permanently attached with glue.

The custom double shot PBT set with all black keycaps and white text came out nicely - this is the finalized production set (the prior set had additional sample keys not part of the set, as noted earlier):

This set is available separately in the shop for other MX keyboards as it is a standard Cherry MX compatible set.

Today the Brand New Beam Spring keyboards started to ship!  Just two of the single digit serial Round 1 BSSK's went out today.  The LED overlay "main design" (like on a Model M) is expected to be completed next week, with the remaining designs to be completed next month.

Important Keycap Removal note (not in the setup video), now that the beam spring Round 1 boards have started shipping:

I use a wire key puller with gentle rocking motion and have no issues removing the caps.  The keycaps cannot be pulled up fast in one motion.  If you are using a lot of strength to pull them straight up or twist them, then you will most certainly break the modules. One user reported that they broke a number of their modules this way.

I think you're going to want to put a sheet with this warning in the package itself. Too many people are used to pulling a number of keys quickly when swapping keycap sets, so you're up against habits people have developed.

Transparent relgendable keycaps update:  I have ordered these keys from the factory.  You can now order them on this add on page:  https://www.modelfkeyboards.com/product/beam-spring-extras/

I specified a set of 22 as the base set (10 keys on the left side + 12 keys in the top row).  The regular key sets do not include extra keys to cover a B122 keyboard so I recommend ordering the relegendable keys.  The keys are also available individually.

Please note the keycap bottom pieces are only available in black, not in the pictured tan color.

Each key can be programmed for whatever is allowed by QMK.  Currently there is just beam spring firmware for QMK to my knowledge, but firmware should hopefully be available for Via/Vial at some point.  On my IBM F122 I set some of the additional keys for media functions, Explorer, and Calculator, for example.

And here I thought the reproduction model Fs were ambitious. I guess I have room in my place for one more modern interpretation of vintage switch tech. I've always wanted a beam spring, but the prices have just exploded over the past 8 years. I'm thinking the SSK format would be a nice companion to the F62.
I long for the day when I find a beamspring. (At a not insane price)

Given what just happened to Linus Tech Tips recently, unless you know someone from your company accidentally deleted the account, it might be wise to get someone with some IT security experience to take a look and make sure nothing nefarious is going on. It would be far more preferable for someone to fess up to accidentally deleting it versus finding that someone has keylogger malware on their machine.

I just updated the manual to help folks whose stabilizer inserts fell out of place during setup.  The mounts are inserted from the top and they must remain loose for the spacebar to function optimally.  You should be able to see them move as the space bar is pressed and released.  You should not be using any kind of tape to secure the clips in place, or it may make the space bar more difficult to press or it may make it get stuck.  Has anyone found the opposite to be true (securing the inserts so they cannot move improves the space bar operation)?  I wonder if that is correct for other MX sets.

I think I will remove the stabilizer slots from all but the spacebar for the Round 2 boards since they are not recommended outside the spacebar.  Has anyone found stabilizing the other keys to be useful on the new beam spring keyboards?

Wendell from Level1Techs made a nice video about the Beam Spring Project!

I have copied my YouTube comment below since there are quite a few comments:

Hello, project coordinator here.  Thanks Wendell for sharing this video!  I am glad that the Brand New Beam Spring Keyboard arrived safely to you.  Hopefully there was not too much work to set up the keyboard after it arrived.  Sometimes a few key modules were broken during transit, according to other reports.  I think you are the first to make the case for USB-B as the connector for the compact case style keyboards - it makes sense since these cables will probably be available for a while and they are still used today, though most folks seem to like USB-C for the convenience of rotating keyboards which also have USB-C, without having to switch the cable, despite the increased risk of a broken connector because the beam spring USB-C connector is not recessed enough.  For the Round 2 Beam Spring keyboards I went with the fully recessed design where you have to open up the keyboard to change out the USB-C cable and there is a metal P clip for strain relief, just like with the F62/F77 keyboards.  For all future classic case style designs of the F and beam spring keyboards it will have the latter "internal USB connection" style.

For those who received their Round 1 board, how was your beam spring setup experience?  I have not received too much feedback so far since they just started going out a few weeks ago.

How many modules broke in shipping and needed replacement?  How much time did it take to set it up?  Any other challenges or issues encountered during setup or after you used the board for a number of hours/days?  Any issues with the spacebar (the trickiest of keys when combining beam spring with Cherry MX style stabilization).

I am posting (with permission) some feedback I received today on the Round 1 beam spring keyboard:

"All of the keys were registering properly on arrival, and all the keys but one felt fine, which I did replace. I don't know for sure if it could have been fixed, it probably could have, but it was just easier to replace the module altogether. I press the spacebar with my left thumb, not my right, so by moving the spring on the left side of the center stem it felt a lot more responsive. The spacebar wire did pop out of the right side stabilizer when I was removing the spacebar, I had to disassemble the keyboard to put it back into place, since the stabilizers don't snap onto the plate. Otherwise the spacebar feels fine. No other issues, really, troubleshooting all this stuff took 30 mins. Based on my first impressions of people that I've talked to that own the keyboard, most seem very happy with how the project turned out."

So far 83 new beam spring keyboards have shipped, and 5 more will be completed today, bringing the total to 88.

So far I have been installing and optimizing the space bar for each person who ordered a key set.  Almost all boards were configured with a key set.  Here are my current notes on space bar optimization:

Many of these steps should be unnecessary with the improved Round 2 boards.

Methods to fix/improve beam space bar actuation:
1.   Change number of visible rings of the support spring from 5 to 6.  A slight increase may be required to make the spacebar actuate reliably.
2.   First test the space bar just barely attached to the beam module, but detached from the stabilizer.  Press the space bar in the middle, above the beam module.  It should easily return to its original position and you should hear the click each time without fail, even if you press it many times in a row.  If it does not, need to inspect part B and adjust the bend of the ears (increase or decrease it, and make sure they are symmetrical) and the distance between metal and the beam flipper (increase this distance so the metal part is flat).
3.   Replace white part (part B).
4.   Adjust metal part for beam flipper ears and the distance from the metal part to the plastic flipper edges
5.   Trim area holding the plastic MX stabilizer insert in place, so that the plastic part can lift up freely with the lightest of finger pressure/movement (the side opposite the stabilizer wire).  This is mostly needed for the first delivery (the one where I have to replace the springs).
6.   Untested:  Bend the stabilizer wire away from the module, or trim more away from the module in the area where it may be contacting the wire if it has not been trimmed sufficiently so that the wire is not contacting the module.

For those who received their Round 1 board, how was your beam spring setup experience?

Got mine today, and the following is written using it.

Unboxing
  • Love the box. Would love a deskmat with the beam and buckling spring designs.
  • The coolest part of the packaging by far is the packing list. I won't spoil the surprise other than to say "No one can be told what the Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself."

Testing and assembly
  • Watched the video FIRST. Lesson learned from my Model F assembly odyssey.
  • No major damage during shipping - no washer dropoff, non-clicking keys, etc.
  • Some variation on weight and sound. Did the "wiggle fix" on the W key as it worked but felt a good deal tighter than the surrounding keys.

Key test (connected, using Switch Hitter)
  • D stuck once, the first time, but after hitting it again it unstuck and did not restick
  • It's best to put the keycaps on from top to bottom so that you can easily see the keycaps line up and know they are fully inserted
  • A couple of keys are slightly off-kilter by about 5 degrees clockwise. I'll probably go back and address, which might require opening the case.  Not a dealbreaker right now.

First impressions
  • The feel is PHENOMENAL
  • The sound is actually quite pleasing too
  • Love the spherical keys. May try out an MT3 keycap set as well.
  • The space bar (pre-installed) is a little heavy but I'm going to try it out for a couple of days before tuning it.

So far the keyboard has potential.  The infinity war for the perfect keyboard might be over; I may have reached the end game. If only there were a 68-key version...

And yes, I'll be ordering a Round 2 version also. After all, you know what they say about guys with big keyboards.  That's right: "They're compensating for something."  ;D

One more point worth putting into its own post:

Keycap removal is much easier if you use a pair of angled tweezers or a spudger to gently depress and hold down the washer while using a keycap removal tool to pull the cap.

Ellipse, I'm hoping that's a safer approach.

Thanks for the feedback Kenshiro70.  I have also shared it on the Deskthority project thread.  I have not found the need to use a spudger with keycap removal; instead I prefer a very gentle rocking motion with a wire key cap puller.

Deskthority and reddit contributor HV_Medic has posted a thorough review of the Round 1 beam spring keyboard.  My reply to the feedback is copied below.

https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicalKeyboards/comments/12vp1ys/another_new_beam_spring_keyboard_possible_end/

My comments:
Thanks HV_Medic for your well-informed and thorough review. Project coordinator here. Kindly see my replies below:

"Replacing this key [spacebar] is kind of obnoxious because you have to trim a module to accommodate the stabilizer."
I recommend just replacing the white part (beam barrel part B) so you don't have to use a dremel to trim one of the spare modules. I have used various tools to separate the washer from the module including pliers and a hammer (supported by pliers underneath the washer so as not to break the module). The Round 2 modules, recently produced Round 1 modules with updated tooling, and virtually all Round 1 boards shipped from this week onwards use an improved, friction fit washer so no glue or paper clips are required to take apart or reseat a module.

"The beam spring modules are very loud"--> this is correct. The round 2 boards have an improved design to add more foam and a new inner assembly instead of the case acting as the top and bottom plates. In my testing the Round 2 boards are slightly quieter and have less ringing due to the sound absorption.

"The alignment of many of the keys is not perfect, there are noticeable gaps between some of the keys, and some keys are rotated compared to others, it is not a big deal, but aesthetically the keyboard is not perfect." This is correct. I see this with the original IBM beam spring modules too. The problem is a bit more noticeable with the repros in my opinion because of adapting the MX keycaps to the old beam spring design. The gaps between keys are a bit larger due to the width of the beam spring modules compared to the smaller footprint of MX switch modules, so gaps are more visible. I have also noticed rotation on keys for both Model F keyboards and beam spring keyboards because everything has looser tolerances. When the tolerances of the two beam spring plastic parts are too tight, the module is more likely to get stuck (this is another improvement for Round 2 and for the first aid kit modules of Round 1 that were shipped starting in the past week or so - the module tolerances have improved so they are not too tight). A very slight twisting of the keycaps in the opposite rotational direction may make the rotation less obvious, though this would need to be done at your own risk as it could snap the part B.

Regarding stabilizers, I found the stabilizers to negatively affect the performance of the non-spacebar keys so I recommended no stabilizers be installed or used. Some folks do prefer stabilized keys; Deskthority contributor darkcruix has suggested a mod that involves using costar style stabilizers for the other keys requiring stabilization and this seems like a good idea that may be preferable to many folks. The challenge is that the stabilizers are about 1mm lower than they should be for the Round 1 design because of the height of the MX plate being lower than the height of the beam spring plate. The round 2 design adds padding below the modules and above the inner assembly, in effect raising the plane of the plate mounted MX stabilizers, so installing the stabilizers may be less tricky with Round 2.

Regarding USB-C, some common feedback I received was to have the ability for folks to rotate usage among various mechanical keyboards in their collection quickly, by being able to use the same USB-C cable for multiple boards instead of dealing with various cables. I do agree with the suggestion of USB-B though and think it is a sturdy connection that would be good for keyboards since folks can trip over the cord. I will note also that the Round 2 boards, like all the classic style Model F keyboards, have USB cables internally stabilized by a metal P clip for strain relief. The compact style boards of both Model F and beam spring keyboards do not have such strain relief.

Regarding lock light wiring, the Round 2 boards of both the Model F and beam springs have the LEDs powered through traces on the same capacitive PCB, instead of separate wires. In the initial design, the worry was about the LED power signal interfering with the capacitive sensing so the wires were made separate, but this turned out to not be an issue during the Round 2 prototyping with traces.

Regarding modules being relatively fragile compared to Model F components, this is correct for the most part, though I have found F springs quite easy to damage by mistake while cleaning or adjusting them. The original beam spring modules were also relatively fragile. When I ordered two original IBM beam spring keyboards many years back, a number of the modules were damaged and I had to purchase spares from orihalcon to replace the damaged ones.

Glad you like the keycaps. It took over a year of searching to find this manufacturer. Many of the dozens of factories making components for the new Model F and Beam Spring projects do not advertise their products, not even on sites like Alibaba, so it is a matter of doing a lot of research and working with existing suppliers to find these additional potential suppliers. More details on the Model F reproduction journey can be found in the Google NYC Tech Talk embedded in the blog on the project web site. Due to the high MOQ of 1000 sets I won't be offering any additional color schemes besides the two already offered.

Regarding repairing the broken modules, I recommend saving all of the parts except for the broken part B because they can be reused. In my experience most of the Round 1 QC failures are due to improperly assembled part B (white parts) and replacing the part B (with its thin rectangular metal part built in) almost always fixes any issue with the module. For now to keep things simple I only sell completed, tested modules but I have ordered thousands of part B extras in anticipation of these parts breaking in shipping. So far I have shipped nearly 100 beam spring keyboards over the past 5 weeks and I don't think more than a few boards have needed replacement module parts mailed due to more than 4 failing beyond repair. 4 modules were included with each keyboard as part of a free mini first aid kit with the anticipation that up to 4 modules would arrive damaged, either due to assembly/quality control errors from the factory or due to damage sustained in shipping.

HV_Medic please do keep everyone posted on the forums with the results of any mods and experiments you do. I'd imagine the broken part B's can be repaired with super glue but it's probably better in the long run to just replace the part B's.

The factory and I continue to prepare for the updated Round 2 production.

The cases were just approved for production; the next step is to make the custom case tooling for mass production of the curves of the case, etc.
I am also reviewing sample parts from the new molds for the two plastic parts A and B.  These molds have been difficult to get right.
The factory has fine tuned the metal part for the beam flipper, to make the radii more rounded like the originals; we have noticed a slight improvement in the snappiness and sound quality with this improvement.
We are still looking at later this year for delivery.

As I continue doing experimentation, some interesting points:

It seems like adjusting the springs and using springs that are about 1-2mm taller increases the press force about 10-15 grams, so I may offer springs with various free lengths as an aftermarket modification option.

There was some discussion last year about getting the right "exotic" material for the very thin metal part for beam barrel.  Thanks to the material analysis posted by the interesting Silo beam switch project that is no longer underway (its goal was to offer significantly miniaturized MX-style switch modules with characteristics matching the beam spring switches), I have been able to find the material, which may have been updated slightly in modern times regarding the presence or absence of some of the trace elements.

It seems like IBM may have used the relatively new S45500 for the original material - aka "Custom 455," trademarked in 1969 and first introduced to commerce in February 1965, right around the time that IBM started development work on the beam spring keyboard.  The material is still considered exotic today and not easy to find.  Details of the material history:  https://trademarks.justia.com/723/26/custom-455-72326498.html

This will hopefully be another improvement for the Round 2 keyboards.  "It possesses a yield strength which is nearly 3 times the strength of grade 304 stainless steel" according to https://www.azom.com/article.aspx?ArticleID=6853 so the Round 2 boards may have a longer potential MTBF, although this is likely to be a distinction without a difference given the metallurgical improvements over the past 50 years far outweighing the imperfections of the available materials IBM had to work with in 1970:  maybe the MTBF is sufficiently high for both boards that it would not be the first point of failure, but we'll have to wait years I guess to see the real-world usage.  Round 1 boards used a premium variation of the standard SUS 304 stainless steel (there are too many variations of how this material is prepared and cooled after heating so it could be considered many materials under an SUS 304 umbrella).

Project update:

After the sample order was assembled and tested, the updated beam barrels (part A and B) for Round 2 were approved for full production and I placed the order this week.  These took a while to get right but I am glad everything is good now.

Hopefully the S45500 material sheets arrive in the coming weeks, when the A and B parts are completed, so that the tens of thousands of beam spring modules can start to be assembled.

I have also ordered the capacitive PCBs for all 8 beam spring variants and the F122, as well as the Leyden Jar version 3 controller for testing.

The 8 beam spring variants:  B62 Split Shift and Regular Backspace, B62 Split Shift and Split Backspace, BSSK ANSI, BSSK ISO, B104 ANSI, B104 ISO, B122 ANSI, B122 ISO

The factory is also preparing the tooling to bend the aluminum cases.  Then they will produce a full working sample keyboard of each design for verification, and then the case and inner assembly plates production can start.

The S45500 thin material for the beam spring modules has shipped to the stamping factory.  This "small" amount of material is enough to supply several hundred thousand modules.  Finding the material was not too difficult but finding a supplier willing and able to produce such a "small" quantity of the material (i.e. less than one metric ton!) was challenging.

The material is a super-thin sheet that is supplied on a roll.  Each sheet is a fraction of a mm in thickness.

Beam metal update:

The factory has performed significant testing in recent weeks on the S45500 material and has unexpectedly found that the SS 304 material used for the Round 1 modules appears to outperform it so far, so we may stay with the tried and true 304.  My guess is that the 304 formulations have improved so much since the 1960s when IBM was developing the beam spring that the exotic S45500 material is no longer required for optimal longevity of the modules.  Or maybe IBM had an unusual finishing process required for this material that is now lost to time.

As a reminder, the need to replace a small percentage of the original Round 1 modules was not due to the material itself but due to incorrect assembly techniques for some of the modules that causes them not to work well (some were bent a little too much so as to permanently crease them; this is why extras were included).  The factory has corrected the assembly issue starting with the updated beam modules that are part of the deluxe first aid kits that have been going out in recent months (the ones with the press-fit tops instead of the glued tops).

As an update I have just ordered the metal Beam Spring and Model F badges.  They can now be ordered from

https://www.modelfkeyboards.com/product/beam-spring-extras/

There are 2 options - the Model F style and the Beam Spring style (rendering for the beam style is shown below; the F style is shown on the Model F project thread).  If you would like for me to order additional styles, you will have to cover the tooling charges and commit to ordering 15 badges at a minimum.  The MFL logo was not ordered due to lack of interest. The beam spring one has the bottom edge cropped not touching the edge on purpose, since the image would be far smaller if the entire beam spring drawing was visible on the badge.

Badges and LED overlays are the same size as the IBM originals and can fit most Model M or Model F keyboards, with exception for the IBM XT and AT boards that use a larger badge.  These badges are 2cm x 2 cm.  The F122 is the only new production board that has a recessed spot for the badge but you can stick the badges anywhere on any of the Brand New Model F or Brand New Beam Spring keyboard cases.

The factory also has the capability to make the black badges with the raised silver printing as well as the large AT/XT style, so let me know if you want to cover the tooling and order minimums to make any of those styles.  I am working with the same factory that produced the badges listed in the below eBay link (not my link). Unfortunately I can't make anything copyrighted/trademarked.

Project update:
These keyboards should be completed and going out later this year around year end or early next year.  As I always say, we are at the mercy of the factories as always for such low volume production.

The modules are still in production, expected to finish around month end, and then they need to be assembled.  The press-fit design is going to be saving a lot of assembly time compared to the older glued on washer design.

The factory is still working on the tooling for the cases and inner assembly, and then they need to produce a working sample of each variation for my review and approval before production on the cases and inner assembly can start, and then these need to be assembled and sent out on the container ship.  The factory already completed a prototype of the new case and inner assembly design earlier this year and it has no issues, but to be safe I want to confirm that the new tooling makes things right for all the parts.

The latest blog update has just been posted on the project web site:

https://www.modelfkeyboards.com/blog/

One small snippet from the update:
Here is a photo showing the assembly process of the second Round 2 B104 sample. The inner assembly is attached upside down to the bottom case so that it does not slip out of place. One can see that the flipper factory improved the color of the flippers – they are more of a deep black color compared to the dark gray color of the originals. There is no functional difference and no one can see this inside of the keyboard, but the black color is closer to the IBM originals.

Beam spring production process

After the sample order was assembled and tested back around the end of July, the updated beam barrels (part A and B) for Round 2 were approved for full production and I placed the order. These took a while to get right but I am glad everything is good now. Production is just about done: the modules are still in production, expected to finish around month end, and then they need to be assembled. The press-fit design is going to be saving a lot of assembly time compared to the older glued on washer design.

I also ordered the capacitive PCBs for all 8 beam spring variants and the F122, as well as the Leyden Jar version 3 controller for testing.

Then these need to be assembled and sent out on the container ship. The factory already completed a prototype of the new case and inner assembly design earlier this year and it has no issues, but to be safe I want to confirm that the new tooling makes things right for all the parts.

Update 1:
The factory has needed extra time to perfect the tooling for the cases and expects to finish up with the samples of each keyboard model by the end of next month.  Here is an interesting video showing how the factory makes the curve on each beam spring case.  The video shows them testing the curve on some test metal instead of what would be the final case.

Update 2:
New BSSK layout with split backspace and right shift

Thanks to Fond Lion, there is a new layout option available for Round 2.  Previously only the B62 offered a split right shift with the option of a split backspace.  This option is only for the BSSK - please contact me to arrange paying for the additional tooling costs for the F104 for example.

You can upgrade an existing order or order a new keyboard with this layout.

Just like with the other custom tooling project (cut out full 5x3 right side block), the tooling was paid for in advance and folks will pay the person directly to take part in it.  This modification is ANSI only, ISO is not available with this mod.

To upgrade, please order the BSSK with ANSI layout on the project web site (or reference a previous BSSK order if applicable) and then PM Fond Lion directly to arrange payment to Fond Lion.  After payment is completed and I am notified by Fond Lion, I will upgrade your order.  The price for the upgrade is $200 (or $100 for people who can't afford it otherwise).  If you are not a Deskthority member feel free to email me and I will pass along your information to Fond Lion over email.

Here are some photos of the uncoated aluminum beam case prototypes from the new tooling.  They are made from a flat piece of aluminum cut and folded/bent into shape.  More details are in my previous post above.

Is there a reason all the prices on the website are dropped like 40% right now?

Yes, as noted in a recent blog post:

Major price discounts to close out the older projects which are now end of production

All F62 and F77 models, plus the compact 104 and compact SSK keyboards, are now end of production and the remaining units are being sold off at a significant discount, while supplies last. Currently all variations are still in stock. Click the Shop button at the top of the page for details and pricing.

Pricing on some of the newer models has also changed so please do check out the latest updated product pages to see which models you would like. Some keyboards that you were looking at before may be more affordable now.

I strongly recommend ordering things now while the current pricing stands and current stock remains, whether to pick up an additional / backup keyboard while you can still buy one new, joining the project for the first time if financial limitations due to the higher pricing were holding you back before, or to pick up an additional keyboard, first aid kit for future repairs/maintenance, a spare key set to use when your current one’s top textured surface wears down over time with usage, spare custom made USB cable, transparent relegendable keys, etc.

Project update:

The Round 2 boards still need to finish production and assembly, so I hope that they can arrive to me later this year, around mid-year.  As mentioned before this was a delay from the original hope that they be completed earlier.  Like with the Brand New Model F Keyboards project, no one project aspect has caused the delay but a number of aspects have taken longer than expected.  The factory has their new year break for the next few weeks so things will continue after then.

If anyone prefers not to wait and wants to switch to a Round 1 beam spring board please let me know as I still have some units remaining.

Beam modules parts A and B:
Recently completed.  These took over one year to produce the molds and approved parts, much longer than expected.  Over a hundred thousand parts of each type were produced.

Beam module part B's assembly with its metal part has been improved for a nicer looking rounded assembly finish on the nub that is below the metal part.  The factory has made thousands of these as part of the updated beam modules (all the ones with the press fit washers on top) and they are nice.

Metal parts for the modules:
The new modules using the older metal part for beam flipper sound great and are very close to the IBM originals.  The tooling for the metal part for the beam flipper was updated last year but the updated tooling designed to get things even closer needs some work to get the modules as good sounding as possible.

The updated press fit washer mold for the beam modules:
Has been completed and approved, and I believe the factory has finished production of these parts if I remember correctly.  This is an update over the original glued metal washer design; it allows for quick and toolless disassembly and repair of the beam modules.

Cases:
All but the beige and industrial gray case colors were approved (I want the colors to be even more accurate to the IBM originals so I rejected those two samples).  The paint texture finish is not yet finalized.

Capacitive and controller PCBs:
wcass and Rico have finished the PCBs for the various beam spring models and I will be ordering samples in the next couple weeks.  Rico's Leyden Jar Rev 3 controller is so far working flawlessly in my testing and these will be the default controllers for the B104 and B122, though the controllers will hopefully have firmware for all the various Model F and Beam Spring models.  As mentioned before, after the ATMEGA32's run out I expect everything to have the Leyden Jar as the factory-installed controller.

Keys:
The PBT double shot keys and wcass xwhatsit controllers were completed last year.

Boxes:
The box designs have been finalized.  The art will be just about the same as the Round 1 boxes shown on the project web site, but the boxes themselves will switch to a tab locking foldable design similar to the boxes IBM used for the original IBM Model F XT and AT keyboards.  I have approved the box designs for production.

The outside protective foam:
Will be similar to the end cap style used on the final production round classic F77 Model F keyboards; after the keyboard samples are approved then they can make the cutting tool for this foam.

Inner foam:
The inner foam that goes between the tops of the modules and the top inner assembly will be evaluated with the forthcoming samples.

Working sample status:
The factory still needs to produce fully working samples of each beam spring keyboard model for my approval, and then mass production and assembly of the remaining case parts can start.  The tooling for these cases took months longer than expected to complete.  The sample cases and their TIA/BIA's are completed and are now waiting to be powdercoated.

I am curious, for those who have been using the round 1 beam spring boards for at least a number of months, is there any feedback on the effect of dust intrusion on the sensing?  Has anyone benefitted from opening up the board and cleaning it up, or is dust not much of an issue?

Project update:

This week I approved production and assembly of the beam spring modules.

I approved the color samples this week for the Model F and beam spring cases, which will have the same color options.  We still are waiting on the beam spring case sample, which should be completed closer to the end of this month.  The case samples have taken much longer than expected to complete but I will not approve production of the cases until I receive a working sample.

Production and assembly are expected to start this month and continue into May, with completion expected in June.  So as to avoid any delays with the new Model F models, the beam spring keyboards are expected to be on a separate container shipment in June, which means these boards should start going out in August.

Here are some photos of the updated sample case with the (hopefully correct) Industrial Gray powdercoating.  They will be sending this board to me for approval later this month and then making samples of the other remaining boards.  Mass production on the modules was approved last week.  This board has a nice alignment of the keys and the top case from what I can see.

As an update, the beam springs themselves can now be ordered separately here:
https://www.modelfkeyboards.com/product/beam-spring-extras/

They are IBM spec and some folks have used them to repair original rusty or damaged IBM beam springs.

Yes confirmed; that original proposal was not selected for production.
