Anything wrong with shiny keycaps?
« on: Sun, 22 September 2013, 20:57:18 »
So keycaps are destined to become shiny over time, and many of mine are ABS, which means sooner rather than later.

Is there anything particularly wrong with this?  Does this mean the plastic will eventually wear through, or is the degradation specific to the texture?

Shiny things are easy to get dirt so need to be clean more frequent.

Edit: and shiny from wear is not uniform, so they're ugly.

Yes, the keycap will eventually wear through.

Plus if the legends are pad printed they will wear off.

Plus it reduces the resale value, as shining is usually not even across the board.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

If you don't like them there is a guide on r/mechanicalkeyboards on sandasting keycaps to give them texture again.  Only do this with doubleshot caps though.

Hmm... if shiny keycaps means that they are wearing through, then why are doubleshot keycaps more lauded than PBT caps?  I hear ABS get shiny much more quickly, even if they are thicker.

It's all about the feel when typing and it's all personal preference.

yes abs does shine much quicker than pbt but some people dont like unforgiving hardness of pbt when typing or something along those lines.

Shiny ABS has a distinctive ever-greasy feeling.  You cannot wash it off.  Some people find it unpleasant.  Some don't mind.  Some like it.

Well, since there are no options in purchasing new ALPS keycaps, I got an old keyboard off eBay just for the doubleshot caps.  If they do end up getting shiny and wearing faster than regular ol' pad-printed keycaps, then I'll be one sad dude.
