[IC] Minitomic - Update april 17th (happening pretty soon!)
« on: Thu, 25 October 2018, 11:04:20 »

The Minitomic is a 45% staggered keyboard which I've been working on over the last few months.
Before getting a prototype made and opening a group buy, I'd like to get your feedback on the design.

Some information:
- Tray mounted design with 8 mounting points
- High profile one piece anodized aluminium case
- QMK compatible PCB
- Brass or aluminium 1.5mm plate
- European switch spacingtm (19mm)
- USB-C Connector
- Angle of 5 degrees
- Capslock indicator under tab key
- Reset button under left shift key
- Fully designed by me ;D

Anodization colors are to be determined, but will likely include black, silver and dark gray.
The price will hopefully be around 100-150 USD for a kit which includes a case, pcb and plate.

Supported layouts
These are the supported layouts right now, but let me know if you think it's missing something! KLE link

More renders

Thanks to janglad for the render at the top of this post :)
The keyset shown is DSA Just Beige by PrimeKB.

UPDATE 23/03/19
The prototype from china is here! It's looking really good :D

19mm spacing will have some keycaps scratch each other, just look at the E6-V2.
There's a reason why that standard is in place.
The m0ar empty you feel,  the m0ar space for Keycaps..

That seems like an issue specific to that board. All OLKB stuff has 19mm spacing and I personally had a prototype manufactured recently that didn't have any issue like that, too.

Edit: Not to mention the 356mini, but those are tolerances that aren't easily achieved in manufacture.

45%? Staggered? 7u space option?

Guess I'll maybe be interested perhaps.

Haha, he knows I'm in. I have a tendency to buy every staggered 40. An unfortunate consequence of being me.

Nice price point and I like the layout.  Only suggestion would be in one of the split space layouts, to swap the shift and left most FN to have the FN between the two “spaces”

Looks neat, interested if I have money when it happens. Would love to see the 7u option be 1.5/1.5/7/1.5/1.5 for that sweet, sweet symmetry and to me feels right to use 1.5s with 7u :thumb:

I've seen some interest in USB C though, is that something you guys want? I can definitely change that in the design.

Remember that only changing the connector will only work for USB-C to A but extra care is needed to ensure USB C to C works

Nice price point and I like the layout.  Only suggestion would be in one of the split space layouts, to swap the shift and left most FN to have the FN between the two “spaces”
good idea. The left half of the split spacebar is quite short and far the the right (compared with the normal spacebars). Swapping positions with FN would definitely move it's position to a more convenient location.

I put them where they are because the fn keys are closer to the thumbs, which is nice. I will also do USB-C :D

Ye now having a keyboard in front of me, I agree. Position is fine, it looked just a bit off for me on the render. Still more layout options is always nice :3

It's unlikely it will increase the price, but I think that's a bit much of compatibility. I don't want to turn it into swiss cheese and I'm sorry I can't cover every layout.

I'm strongly against the idea of putting FN in the middle. I love split space, but small key in the middle forces a very unnatural wrist movement. When I had such a layout (DZ60 with 2.25, 1.25, 2.75 split space) it was so bad the middle key was basically unused.

I don’t think so either. Hard to redesign the case at the moment. Unless it’s JD45 style — plate without two corners

The Minitomic is a 45% staggered keyboard which I've been working on over the last few months.
Before getting a prototype made and opening a group buy, I'd like to get your feedback on the design.

Some information:
- Tray mounted design with 8 mounting points
- High profile one piece anodized aluminium case
- QMK compatible PCB
- Brass or aluminium 1.5mm plate
- European switch spacingtm (19mm)
- USB-C Connector
- Angle of 5 degrees
- Capslock indicator under tab key
- Reset button under left shift key
- Fully designed by me ;D

Anodization colors are to be determined, but will likely include black, silver and dark gray.
The price will hopefully be around 100-150 USD for a kit which includes a case, pcb and plate.

Supported layouts
These are the supported layouts right now, but let me know if you think it's missing something! KLE link

Thanks to janglad for the render at the top of this post :)

Would we be able to replace the 1.25Rshift and 1u key with a standard single 2.25u Rshift?

Consider me interested. I like the minivan but I want a full spacebar, they sound nicer. And the JD45 has no angle.

No, because the switch spacing is different.

Curious to know why switch spacing is different. Is JD45's slightly wider?

Honestly a must buy for me if JD45-style blockers could be an option. I hope that’s not too niche. Let me know if anyone thinks the same.

I think it's because the Minitomic uses 19mm spacing, and the JD45 probably uses 19.05mm spacing.

If that's the case, I'd love to see some standard 45% PCB really -- I know I'm asking too much  ;D but it would benefit a lot from interchangeable parts just like GH60.

Out of all 40+% keeps in interest check phase, this is the most promising one because prelude has non standard stagger and lynx l50 will not support 6.25 spacebar.

It's probably too late, but I second 1.25u blockers  :) :)

Right now this keyboard is a solid maybe for me, but with an option for blockers like on the JD45 this would be insta buy for me and I think a lot of other people.

Particularly the first one with the Fn key on the left as well as the right.
Only problem is I'd have to source a 1.75u spacebar.

I like my minivan a lot.  It's the first 40% keyboard I've tried.  But I still cannot get used to the apostrophe/enter key.  What do you guys do for the apostrophe?

I use the Enter key as Fn, I put apostrophe where semicolon usually is, and I put semicolon on Fn+apostrophe.

I bind one of the spacekeys to FN; FN + ; is apostrophe, FN + Enter is quote.

I’ve tried this but I get terribly frustrated when I hit enter instead of apostrophe.  Maybe I just need to give it more practice. Can qmk do tap for apostrophe and hold for enter?  That might be weird though

Split space: one as enter, one as space.  'Enter key' is just a 1.75u Apostrophe, where it should be (next to ;).  Split space 'enter' is tap for enter, hold for a nav fn layer.

That might work.  I don’t use the left Spacebar except for gaming, but I could put a separate gaming layer on it.  I like the idea of accidentally pressing apostrophe when I need enter Better than the other way around.  I’ve replied to so many messages like this accidentally:

I
I’ve tried to map it that way but it
it’s a frustration that I
I’d like to do away with

This is how it usually comes out on my 40% boards.  😂

Life happened. Prototypes have been made and some people have one already. It's definitely not dead but hugely delayed.

Very interested.

I'd prefer 1.5u left shift / uniform stagger though.

Bottom row is real similar to what I use on my ortho boards. Count me in.

I would very much like one of these.
Think it would be a perfect match for KAM_Superuser down the line. :)

It's so hard seeing this thread get pinged after 2 years asking if it's still happening.

Even harder that there hasn't really been anything quite comparable in the meantime that I'm aware of.
