[IC] KAM Ocean Front - Update - Groupbuy up!
« on: Wed, 27 May 2020, 14:34:01 »

KAM Ocean Front

Hello guys, this is my first set of keycaps called Ocean Front in KAM profile.

The set is based on a beach in the mediterranean sea, to really capture that sunny summer vibe!

You can go true to nature with shiny High Gloss water caps, and a rough textured beach or you can go uniform with a full textured / matte set for a nice typing experience.
You buy each set individually, so if you're not sure wich one is best for you, you can buy an extra water set for not that much extra :)

I tried some different things with the set like multi-keycaps modifiers, different textures. and enough novelties to cover a macropad, or rearrange your own pattern with the shells.

The kits are split into 3 parts.

(kit A) = Sand ( Always Matte / Textured )
(kit B) = Water (High Gloss / Smooth)
(kit C) = Water ( Matte / Textured )

this way one can mix and match to his own liking.

So for a full set you Buy either A + B ( Sand Matte + Glossy Water) or A + C (Sand Matte + Matte Water). Or every set if you want a full set with both the textured matte water caps and smooth glossy water caps ( A+B+C ).

(kit A) =  Always Matte / Textured

(kit B) High Gloss / Smooth

(kit C)  Matte / Textured

Why blanks instead of legends on the 40's kit? It's a universal profile after all.

Also, some of the legends may be hard to read toward the right side of the gradient. Overall I like it a lot though.

I buy a numpad every set and even I think the numpad should be separated from the alphas

Can the ortho kit fish join the novelties set?

Thanks!
since it's a gradient I needed to make a lot of different versions of the legends so I went for a blank route. I can try to make the legends cover some 40 kits, and check how much extra caps are needed. will come back to this.

I can split them, but thought it was better to combine them so a base + mods would cover a whole keyboard. what is the downside of including it? I'm new to all of this sorry. I will check what is possible with the fishkit added to the novelties

First off, this is fantastic and I want it.

I highly recommend splitting the numpad into its own kit. Since we are working with keyreative MOQ here, there is no reason to combine it with alphas.

You mentioned being unsure about the reason to split off numpad; anyone using anything smaller than a TKL does not need the numpad.

Further, I recommend putting the function keys into the modifiers kit. The alphas kit should be literally just alphas. Check out KAT Explosion or KAT Oasis or KAT Iron for some ideas on kitting. While those are KAT and not KAM profile, you’ll get a better idea for how to make kits for keyreative as the manu.

Good luck!

love the colors, but the way the gradient is layed out bothers me. It's not a straight diagonal, and it's not where the keyboard split occurs for left and right between the shades of blue and shades of yellow.  What does it look like with the blue shifted to the left one column?

I love this. Having the color changes not on a straight diagonal is novel and fits the theme perfectly. How you have it looks great.

I also agree with those recommending to split the numpad keys to its own set.

I just love the fact that the icon mods basically already include all of the (imo) best novelties.
+If you are actually going to be able to achieve the matte/glossy combo, it really is going to be a no brainer for me!

Great job on the set, I'm looking forward to it as my fist ever kam set ;D

The C seems to be the wrong color if you want a diagonal gradient.

And please consider how SA Vilebloom did the ortho kit. It maintains the diagonal gradient as well.

I believe not being strict diagonal is intentional because the 4 is also a different color. I think its to create a wave effect (tide moving effect).

Absolutely love the colors, and especially the non-standard gradient. It's not just diagonal! Also, mixing matte and gloss finishes is really clever.

Hoping to hear more about this set soon. Well done, best of luck!

I absolutely loved the original design with light blue water posted on Reddit. Looked like the shores of a tropical hideaway. The green makes it look like the freezing cold, disgusting waters of the northern coasts. Does KAM have a similar minimum order quantity to KAT? Any chance we could have both options with inviting, warm light blue water and cold, seaweed-filled green water?

Depends where the tropical hideaway is, but there are lots of places that go from relatively shallow to very deep water very quickly (hence the much darker green to blue).

I'll look into the options for a lighter gradient, I don't see the dark green colour, as it's a deep blue on my monitor. (P3 screen)

This is correct, I couldn't do it on an ortho since it will look very minecraft.
That didn't flow nicely so I made it straight for ortholinear boards, to get an idea from deep sea to shore :)

I like the gradient and colors a lot. Just a few opinions:
1) I prefer some sort of wave in the ortho sets, even if it would look 'minecrafty'. Right now it feels out of place whenever I look at it.
2) I really like turtles, maybe that's an idea for an extra novelty?
3) the 3 keys making a chain with anchor novelty is absolutely AMAZING!
4) The sandcastle novelty is a little too detailed to fit on a 1U key, maybe you could swap the sandcastle for the second part of the pole (with skateboard). I think a topview of a Pennyboard or any other small cruiser could fit better in a 1U shape.
I've been working my student summerjob on the beach for 4 summers in a row now, but due to the current state of the world I'm not sure if I'll be able see the beach this summer. This set really gives me some of that summervibe back.

I thought the 40's kit with blanks covered enough split keebs, but coming from feedback I have to re-do alot of the kits, so we're working on it!

1. I will check out how it looks, however if it looks like any other 45 degree angle set I will not do it, and continue with the straight set. Hope you understand.
2. Will take it into consideration, any prefered color? same as the shrimp?
3. That's feedback I heard a lot and will edit the castle so fit better, thanks :)
I don't think the skateboard with pole is a good subtitute since it's a noveltie version of the pipe key |\, while the castle is home. Maybe we can make the turtle a FN subtitute?

Yes, I understand, but right now the transition feels unnatural. I guess it's just the downside of using ortho, nothing to blame you for.
The same color as the shrimp would be nice, but it could also substitute the castle. I don't have any preferred color or position for it in mind.
I just realized how well thought out the skateboard key is and the structure in the novelties. It's not just 'beach related' keys. Nice!
BTW, today I saw an IC for GMK offshore, which has a lot of similaritieswith this set. Idk if you know who runs that IC, but I think you guys need to talk about your themes. They look a little too similar.

I really like how this set is turning out!
Isn't it possible to make ortho layout also a diagonal gradient, a little bit like the ergodox?

I've updated the set for a diagonal gradient for you, will be included in standard ortho set for flexibility :)
Also full matte support coming for ortho, like the rest of the sets!

I've been waiting for the perfect set to encapsulate living in Los Angeles, and this is the one. Love the glossy/matte mix. I hope this inspires more people to think outside the box when designing keysets. If COVID doesn't bankrupt me, I'm in for this one!

Any update on when this is expected to run GB?

I have no clue yet, I'm still waiting on pricing for already over a month. My contact does not respond sadly, so I'm in the dark.
Once prices are set, I will accelerate the project to get it to GB as soon as possible!

Any updates?

Sorry for the delay, Corona virus has hit my family. We are doing fine now luckily the virus only had mild symptoms.

For the update:
- Samples are in, colours need some work to get it closer to what it should be. But the gradient is looking great! also fantastic contrast between glossy and matte keys!
- Renders are at 50%, only board renders, and novelties left :)

Good to hear you and your family has recovered.

Personally haven't been that lucky, I have lingering symptoms now even though I have recovered from it in March...

But to the set;

Looks great, and having been around the sea half my life, I kind of need this set. Love the icons and colours, hope you get the samples as close as the renders.

Would you mind sharing the samples, even if they aren't the right colours, to illustrate the (possible) contrast and shine / matte differences? I'm personally not yet sold on the idea, feels-wise, but if it looks stunning I might want to give it a shot and order the two different finishes.

Glossy caps look stunning. Coming from standard GMK/SP sets, will those shiny candies use some special technique of polishing during manufacturing process? Or maybe it's the other way around - gloss in real is just regular smooth texture we used to see everywhere else, but the sandy ones use some special treatment for extra-grainy texture? Or BOTH?  :)

Second question - even the slightest chance to get full glossy set?

@komodo90 from what I know, dye-sub and reverse dye-sub keycaps are covered in a hard UV-cured lacquer to protect them against abrasion. That coat can be glossy or matte (or the matte can be an additional coat on the glossy base, but not vice versa).

There is no treatment. Keycaps are fabricated by plastic injection, the texture is entirely determined by the mould. So keycaps are directly getting that finish.

For KAM profile, Keyreative had to create two sets of moulds (one glossy smooth, one matte).

Dye sub technique actually adds a coloured ink into the surface of the keycap. As a result it's an additive process so you can only use darker tones compared to the base plastic, this is why to create lighter legends some manufacturers like Infinikey or Keyreative do a "reverse dye sub" process where the plastic color is the legend color, and the dye is applied all over the keycap (on 5 sides).

Final Kitting!
The kits are split into 2 parts. Sand (kit A) is always Matte, and the water can be Glossy(kit B) or Matte(Kit C).
this way one can mix and match to his own liking.

This is brilliant. Just really innovative thinking. I was going to skip this set just because I use ortho and I think the beach effect is a little lost on a straight up and down alignment, but with this added shiny/matte effect, I might get it to put on an old row staggered board just to look at it. Well done.

== Edit ==
Wait, there's a color staggered ortho option? Oh I'm TOTALLY in.

I know it's late in the process here, but can space keys be added to the kits? Unless there's already something there and I missed it. I have a 2.25u, 1.25u, 2.75u split space on my board.

I really like that you actually went for the different textures, my online problem with that is, that, let's say I would buy the glossy "water" alphas, I don't think I'd have a chance to have the ("watery/blue) mods match the texture/also be glossy.
I'd love to maybe see another mod kit with glossy "water" mods as well, but I guess we would end up having way to many kits, so I'd completely get it if you don't see this change as feasible.

Will there be two setups of all kits, concerning matte or glossy. For example, if I pick up matte alphas, will the icon mod blue keys be glossy or matte? Or in my case the blue parts of North ISO? Same goes for novelties and so on. Don't want to end up in a situation where there are glossy blue caps next to matte ones.

Otherwise I think it's a very cool concept!

I understand KAM isn't as expensive GMK and stuff, but you might want to consider when exactley you run your group buy, as to not run it at the same time as other GB's, there's a TON of popular sets coming out in next couple months, if people are forced to choose between certain sets, it's likely everyone's totals sales will be less.

A question and a suggestion here:

1. Are the mods also polished or are they all matte?

2. I'm not sure if you're interested in organizing artisans, but I've seen some great beach/ocean themed spacebars, and curious to see if you might be interested in organizing something with an artisan maker? I'm usually not a fan of artisans and spacebar artisans even less, but this one seems like it could be a great opportunity.

I just googled some layouts and it seems you're right. it's already in the alphas but a different shade of sand, I will check if it's possible to add one in the ortho kit, thanks for the headsup

Is it confirmed kits finalized? I would love to suggest a couple of keys to the forties kit! Specificity a 1.25u tab as well as a blue colors 1.75u shift. Really looking forward to this set!

The new renders are looking a lot more blue than the original ones which featured a more sea green gradient. Is the blueish look the intended outcome?

Yes, this is after some colourmatching we settled on those pantones.
Here are the samples, I really like the colours :)

The colours are a match with the pantones

It looks like for the alpha kits you might've uploaded "Alphas Glossy" twice instead of "Alphas Matte"?

Also, I find the kitting right now between matte and glossy to be kind of confusing. If sand is always matte, I think naming a kit with sand in it "glossy" can be slightly misleading? Some more specification in the kit names might be helpful for when this set goes to GB, just so people know for sure which kits are which.

The new renders are gorgeous btw!

Sharp eye, missed the double glossy, will fix it immediately!

The demo's are with kits Matte (A matte + C matte) and Glossy (B glossy + C matte)
On the vendors site, the kits are separated out like the alpha's in this post.

Uh, considering a lot of folks are asking for refunds because the Ave still hasn’t been delivered a year later and Royal has been pretty poor with communication, if you have info to share, please do. I’m currently holding out on asking for a refund, but I’m not thrilled about us being ghosted.

This might be an unpopular take, but I really loved the original seafoam-y greenish blue... I think it captures the theme a bit better actually than a bright blue :/

I also thought that the original colors matched really well with this fountain pen: https://kanileapenco.com/kahakai-fountain-pen/

Sounds like decisions have been finalized, but any chance we'll ever see that greenish blue again?

Yeah, I have to agree the change to light blue is a dealbreaker for me, and I was so excited for those original renders. I am glad lots of people seem to like it, and I am glad OP is going through with the group buy, I hope it is a success!

...just want to say I think those original renders were some of the coolest caps I have ever seen. Darn.

Also a dealbreaker for me :'( I was really impressed by the initial renders. The green/teal seafoam vibe was quite honestly the most amazing and breathtaking IC render I've ever seen to date.
At the same time, happy for the people getting another successful keycap GB, if theres ever an option for the original colour scheme I'd definitely throw my IC back in.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the Feedback, I heard this one quite a lot so I can see what I can do. there is still a kitting update coming for small things I forgot about so I think something is still possible.
I personally like both of them a lot, but I understand the greenish is a lot more tropical / warm looking that fits the theme well.

I will come back to this :)

Throwing in another vote for returning to the green. The blue is a much more harsh transition and doesn't feel like a smooth water to beach transition.

The 40s/ortho kit is missing a few keys/requires a few changes. As it stands right now, your 40s/ortho kit offers ortho-only support, even though you offer several non 1u sizes.

-1.75u shift is strictly a left sided key in 40s and should be blue, not sand.
-1.25u tab in blue in missing. Every single staggered 40s board uses this key size tab. This is a quintessential 40s key.
-in order to outfit a prime_e, you’ll need another 1.25u key in blue. I recommend Fn or Menu
-in order to outfit UT47/Whimsy, you’ll need a 1.5u shift in blue
-I recommend 4x total 1.5u bottom modifiers. This covers some iterations of Fourier/similar layouts. Such as 2x blue and 2x sand (Ctrl and Alt)
-other common small bar sizes are completely missing. You’ll want to add the following: 1x 2.75u, 1x 2.25u, 2x 1.75u, and 2x 1.5u.

I’d be happy to go over these changes with you in greater detail on Discord. DrHigsby#8817.

If it does not, still love this set and hope the GB goes well. Good luck!

It's lovely. I'm more up for sculpted profiles, but if I were to get something flat this would be it.
Model M Industrial, SSK, Unicomp 104, Code TKL MX Green, FC660M MX Green + Clear + White + Grey, FC660C Topre 45g, MagicForce 68 USB and Bluetooth, Whitefox, some optical switch 65% Bluetooth split spacebar thing ... wait, I think I need an intervention. Too late, there’s a couple of new Model Fs on the way.
Too much SA is never enough.

The only key I am worried about is the small shift key, but it looks like you have us covered. Best looking colors for keycaps, instantly fell in love. Hope to get a set of these when available!

Also requested some greener samples, hopefully those will come soon.

Noooooo! This set was finally getting close to your original blue of Beachie DSA that I really wanted. I guess you can't please everyone. At least we convinced you to offer the water in matte.  :D

A big fan of the green, will the greens also have the shiny/matte option as well?

Spacebar kit for Alice?

In the works, will be added. :)

amazing renders by liz! though i feel you should probably include acknowledgements to the creators of the boards used in your post

You're right, thought I already did that oops

It was already there, under special thanks to

I also spoke to DrHigsby and he helped me kitting, after this is finished the pricing quote will be updated.

Also requested some greener samples, hopefully those will come soon.

Estimated GB date is 1 June :)
I think they meant list the name of the boards and their creators not whoever did the renders./
Yeah I'm gonna have to ask... What is that first board? Lol

Edit: for anyone wondering, the first board is the M011Y https://thekey.company/products/m0lly?variant=30337112997977

So far it looks like the Alphas Kit and the TKL Modifier Kit are separated.

I have been excited about this set for a while now!!

I've been excited about this set for nearly a year. Of course, I've also been waiting for over a year for Keyreative to make my first order of KAT keycaps. KAT Arctic better arrive before this set goes group buy, and it better be amazing so I can justify ordering KAM Ocean Front.

YES!

The colours are set in between both versions, in the original post you can see the samples + pantone matching.
I personally really like how they came out, and 100% match with the colours I asked for!

Yes, this will be included in the Groupbuy

Yes, they will! Final colours in the original post, with glossy samples incoming :D

Hi,

Please consider adding the u measurements to the kit renders: it is something I see some occasionally done and it is greatly appreciated. My ability to eyeball all the correct keycap measurements isn't perfect.

Looking to kit out a redox keyboard and I need 10 1.25u and 6 1.5u. Sadly the blanks kit doesnt feature 1.25u, but likely too late for that now.
My count is that a TKL mods and a Novelties gets me to that count, hopefully that is right  :D.
TKL mods has
  • 7 1.25u (left crtl sys alt, right alt sys menu ctrl)
  • 6 1.5u (left tab crtl alt, right alt ctrl bksp)

Novelties has
  • 3 1.25u (uhm... chain thingy, chain loopy thingie, and anchor thingy)
  • 1 1.5u (boat thingy)

which gets me the 10 1.25u and 7 1.5u I need to kit out.

That's probably something you should ask on a thread of the keyboard you're getting, because it can vary, even between Alice styles. Generally they are standard tkl sets though

Yeah sorry, I think I should revise the question, I did not find a spacebar kit in the kitting, or is it coming soon? It's 2u and 2.75u spacebar.

Oh wow yeah, that's a massive oversight. Didn't even realize because I was looking at this kit for someone else. Doesn't look like there is a spacebar kit at all. In this case, the best you can do is use the shifts/novelties. Not sure it would go with the gradient though

Uhhh good point! I also have the same problem, for my split keyboard I need a 2.25 U and 3 U spacebars (or blanks). Is it really too late for a spacebars kit? :'(

I don't think June's a good idea.. there is a ton of popular sets going down this month, and May was packed too. It would suck pretty bad, if after all the effort put into designing this set, if it did not meet MOQ.
Maybe i'm wrong, and that's the way every month will be going forward in this hobby, but I don't know..

I agree June is a bad idea, but my reasoning is more selfish. I'm still waiting on my first KAT order from May of 2020. It would be nice to see if Keyreative can actually deliver a quality set. With the quality control issues I've seen on every set released, I'm not sure I can put more money into a startup. That is what Keyreative is, a startup. They used the money from the first set of group buys to buy their equipment after their supplier failed to produce quality keycaps, but Keyreative is still having quality issues.

When is GMK Ocean Front?   ;D

Am I missing something or should the 2u shift in the TKL kit be blue instead of brown? 2u left shift is (almost?) never on the right side of a board.
